Long time reader, first time poster.

I've been contemplating running a D&D campaign but with some major twists. I'd like to run a campaign setting with no magic. I know I want to completely get rid of all traditional arcane and divine spell casting but I'm not sure if I want to get rid of supernatural or extraordinary abilities which mimic spells. As part of this I want to have more complex / tactical combat including variant rules for hit points and how armor works.

I was wondering if anybody had any ideas or suggestions on variant rules to use or any other advice. Also if there are any already created campaigns or even different games with rules like what I'm talking about, I would love to hear it. I've read alot about the Inquisitor "narrative war game" and it sounds very interesting but I prefer the medieval fantasy type setting to futuristic ones. I would also prefer something doable with a typical D&D grid map and minis.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Welcome to the Forums.

You should probably check into the SRD Variant Rules: Amour as Damage Reduction (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/adventuring/armorAsDamageReduction.htm) and the Class Defence Bonus (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/adventuring/defenseBonus.htm). There are a bunch of other variant rules there for altering the way you handle damage, and all are culled from the 3.x Unearthed Arcana. The DMG offers an Opposed Attack Roll Variant that migth work well in combination with such rules. Opposed Attack Roll Rules are fairly common for this sort of thing (i.e. Active Parry, Block and Dodge). There's quite a lot of discussion about such things over in the Homebrew Forum.

If you are really looking for a Low Magic environment, though, consider taking a look at Conan D20 (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/home/series.php?qsSeries=7).

D20 has a Fantasy RPG that does that, called Iron Heroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Heroes); you might want to check it out.
