Gerta swung her greatsword into the spine of the sand giant's skeleton. With a satisfying snap, the undead creature breaks in half, the negative energies animating it spent.

"We are being attacked!" she hears Ferros, the half-golem/half-ogre captain shout. "Squad Five! Squad Three! Charge!"

In the middle distance, the neanderthal sees what appear to be giant wood and metal scorpions. The squads under Ferros charge towards the creatures. Even as they draw close, invisible mounted attackers appear and slice the Legionnaires to ribbons. Ferros alone seems to stand to the assault.

"Stop him!" Abbas, the binder calls out. Gerta turns to see the deserter, Pvt. Morgenstern a-mount on a skeletal horse.

"Squad Six, get that bastard!" with Ferros occupied, the brutal gnome drill sergeant was nominally in command.

The deserter and his horse make good use of the chaos, rush through the broken gates and ride off into the night.

As Squad Leader, Corporal Harringson leads the remains of the squad after Morgenstern. Already Sen Mao and Jimmy had been killed in the attack. Gurrock, Hardy, Abbas and Chiel follow.

"Let's go Gerta, we've got our orders," Harringson shouts.

The barbarian wrenches her blade free from the giant's spine and lopes after her squad. The deserter's horse leading them away from the melee...

You arrive on Clot, the shantytown island, Legion sashes and epaulets hidden as per your orders. You are met by a short, unassuming local, Taldras by birth. He gives the agreed-upon code phrase and accepts your counter-phrase.

"I am Mehmet, please come quickly. We have much to discuss," he says, turning and walking off, not waiting to see if you follow.

There are several hovels, numerous huts made from driftwood and stones and the occasional lean-to or tent.

Marching through the pathways (to call them streets would be to give them undue grandeur) are a few armed pairs of half-orcs. Most denizens clear a path to these soldiers.

You recognize the half-orcs as Twice-Blooded; so-called because of the two oaths they take, to serve their emir and to eradicate all ferenghi in Taldras.

Your guide hurriedly leads you to a more-solidly built hovel, it having a clear set of walls and a solid door. Within is a trapdoor, leading to a cellar.

In the cellar is a table, upon which lies a water-logged corpse. Standing over the corpse, a rather cadaverous man is chanting while holding a scroll.

This man is a dread necromancer/warlock. He is coaxing a scroll or raise dead to work on the body.

Gerta

The last thing you remember was following the deserter for a day and a half, finally coming to what looked to be an abandoned temple. It had some sort of dragon motif.

Your squad corporal ordered you to return to the Outpost and report this to Capt. Ferros. When you reached the Outpost, there were no Legionnaires remaining. Those weird wooden scorpion had taken up a perimeter around the Outpost and half-orcs were guarding the broken gates.

You recall a "psst" and you followed it to the rocky beach west of the outpost.

There two surviving legionnaires, the gnome sergeant and the dwarf cook, were about to disembark on a rowboat. You knew of a small town situated north of the outpost.

From there Sgt. Ben Zara plans to contact the Legion and retake the Outpost. She ordered you to get rowing. The rest of Squad Six would have to fend for themselves.

Then you felt something wickedly thin pierce your throat.

All went dark...

https://40.media.tumblr.com/bfe5736c80a4f298222f652b072f6846/tumblr_mml2pqbBK11s0upyjo1_500.jpg

You briefly find yourself in a lush land absolutely teeming with life... but a nagging compulsion to finish a job you started keeps distracting you.

Your eyes open. You are on a table surrounded by strangers. A gnoll... no, not Gurrock. Humans. An elf? No half-elf.

The gnome enters the room.

"Half-orcs. Armed and snooping around. Can you stand, Second Corporal Gerta?" the one-eyed sergeant asks. Looks like you just got promoted.

The Rest of You

She looks at the rest of you.

"You must be the ISTAR unit. All of you, look smart. Don't start a fight, but don't lose one."

She keeps a hand on her small bastard sword.

"Try to lay low... be back here at sunset," the gnome says to Illanar and Eli.

"Cprl. Gerta, the gnoll's a Penal, so that makes him your responsibility."

"You two," she says, pointing at Justinian and Salvei, "You're to stay here unless one of your squadmates will vouch for you. I suggest you all get ready for a boat ride once its dark."

Salvei nods his understanding, rats skittering at a very slow rate into the room around them, moving to hide under furniture where they can see but not disturb anyone.
"Ma'am?" He speaks after the gnome finishes, giving a moment to decide if it's reasonable to continue. "No disrespect meant but I worry to the capacity of the vessel? We may not all fit on a smaller device." His strange emphasis on the word 'We' making it sound almost as if he meant 'I'.

Eli nods with a wink and a smile, and heads straight for the brothel. Nothing like a woman on the eve of a mission, especially one with such a high risk. Traveling deep into probably conquered territory, investigating the disappearance of not only an outpost, but also the envoy sent there... Eli didn't like his chances. And he wasn't going to die regretting that last chance for a lay. And although he knew logically that the feelings the women expressed for him were as real as the ones he professed to them, he also knew enough about himself that he could forget that fact for a while, and that, at the end of the day, he really didn't care. He'll spend a handful of gold on a woman, preferring one with an ample bosom and a toothy grin, then head to the tavern for a bit of liquid courage--enough to get a healthy buzz, but not to significantly impair his decision-making--to complement his afternoon delight, before returning to the unit at sundown for his orders.

I don't have energy/time to research and identify the best ways to spend my gold tonight, but I'll take care of it this weekend. Spending 5 gold on his debauchery.

Gerta

Blinking at the light, Gerta immediately reached for her weapon ... until she saw the sergeant standing there, saying something. Lumbering to her feet, she stood at attention, nodding with a mumbled, "Yes, Sergeant." . As she looked around the room, realizing she didn't know anyone here but the sarge and Gurrock ... wait ... the folk looked different. Fur was darker, muzzle wider ... he wasn't Gurrock.

Remembering the prick at her neck, Getta rubbed at the spot, checking for blood. What had happened? She recalled the fight, the chase, the retreat ... then darkness and this. What we going on?

Suddenly, Gerta realized some of the people were staring at her ... and something nagged at the back of her memoru. Had the sarge called her corporal?

Gulping, Greta glanced at the people again, not really sure who they were or what their skills were. With a grunt, she waved to the folks to follow her. "Uh, you lot, follow me. We eat, then sleep. Talk more later."

That should do it ...

Derror

The gnoll runs his paw through his mane of scraggly black hair. He looks around, occasionally sniffing the air. He snorts, burps and farts and never once apologizes. The culture he came from does not waste time with meaningless platitudes and, honestly, he doesn't feel like changing his way of life to accommodate all the fur-less swine he finds himself living with now. He looks at the boat and shrugs. He had seen many rickety boats back when he lived in the Northlunds. Gnolls were never known for their engineering prowess, so clan-mates would often die while fishing or traveling by boat. The unlucky ones would fall into the ice-cold water, then manage to swim to shore, only to die from exposure. Derror's uncle had died that way. He died a coward's death. He died shriveled up in the fetal position, clinging to a wet blanket. The stain of his uncle's dishonor lingered upon all of the Thurrgs, most especially Derror as the two were hunting-mates. It was his uncle's dishonor that was probably the root cause as to why the clan elders thought it best to send Derror away; away to join a foreign legion and never return home. To die a warrior's death in some distant land, fighting some unknown enemy. His sacrifice would bring honor back to the Thurrgs. Derror was happy about that. It gave him solace to know that his sacrifice would allow his liter-mates to live freer, better lives.

The gnoll is shaken out of his contemplation by the corporal, "Derror like food. What Corporal going to buy for pack? Derror like meat. Raw meat. Not cooked."

Illanar nodded to the Gnome "Briefings tonight then? I'd like to know more about how you ended up here, instead of at Outpost Four where we were to expect finding you if all were well". Afterwards Illanar took his leave, with the approaching expedition into the desert he knew he would have to buy some robes to better keep out the heat, a secondary weapon which could be used from behind allies wouldn't go amiss either. And while the shantytown was a sorry excuse for a place to live and be for that matter, Illanar knew that commoners sometimes had an ability to learn things they weren't always expected to know, specially when it wasn't explicitly kept secret, although he kept an eye out of leaving in time to get back to the base before sundown.

Gather Information [roll0], to get anything out of Gather infomation I'll have to sniff around for [roll1] hours so if I can't get anything in the alloted time I'm abandoning the attempt, or make do with an incomplete attempt (there aren't any rules for how this should/could be done through)

Wow, first natural one of the game!

Justinian kept to himself most of the journey to Clot. He did not know his squadmates well enough and in all honesty, they kind of frightened him. Maybe signing up with the Legion wasn't the best of ideas. Nevertheless, he was here now and he had to make the best of it.
Arriving at the hovel, Justinian took a look at the chanting man who was clearly performing some ritual on the corpse. He could not quite decipher his incantations though, necromancy and dead rites had never been his field of study. He knew he had to invest more time in his studies, if he couldn't identify what magics his newfound allies were using, who knew what kind of terrors his enemies might have in store for him. He shudders at the thought of actually having enemies. Justinian wraps his arms around himself tightly, why couldn't he just have stayed at the temple, he asked himself.

The young priest kept his mouth shut when the gnome spoke, mostly for fear of reprimand. Though he would not know what to say to her if asked anything. He kept quiet until Gerta spoke up and started ordering everyone around.
He quietly piped up, attempting to introduce himself to her. "Eh, Private Benir, eh reporting for duty. Uhm, ma'am," he quickly averted his eyes, hoping he did not anger the corporal.

After partaking in the local custom, Eli sits in the bar beside the House of Negotiable Virtue. He sees a pair of half-orc soldiers elbow each other and mutter about you, guffaws between growling comments.

The shops and stalls of the market are woefully inadequate unless you want spoiled food, illicit goods or colourful diseases.

Fortunately the QM at Outpost Taldras One was well-stocked, and you had your pay packets prior to departing on this mission.

Gerta, Derror, Justinian, Salvei

Food, as it is, is supplied for you by the curiously shaven dwarf cook. It consists of dry bread and dry cheese and dull beer. After a moment, he tosses Derror and just-killed chicken.

Some 10 minutes before sundown Illanar comes back to the hovel a bit green around the gills, waving off any offer of food from the resident cook. Those poor sods sold soiled food as it was some of the newer available they had, with no sight of fish even if it very charitably could be called a fishing village.

Illicit goods could be interesting to investigate, but Illanar didn't really bother about it, both because it was to be excepted in a shantytown and that he frankly didn't care all that much as long as he wasn't in a position either having to do it, or getting something out of doing it, no matter to which end something should or could be done. Colorful diseases, well Illanar steered well clear of those as while he was appreciative of women, no matter their race, he felt he was worth more than any of them could offer him in connections.

The gnoll looks at his plate in bewilderment. Tasteless cheese, tasteless bread, weak beer... None it was appetizing. None of it was worthy of a Gnoll warrior. These fur-less swine do not know how to... Live!

The dwarf then surprises the barbarian by slapping a dead chicken on his tray. The Gnoll's eyes light up with sheer excitement. It had been many months since he last tasted fresh meat. He would savor every bite of this bird. "Derror like chicken. Dwarf good man. Derror and Dwarf now friends. If Cook need anything, Derror do it!"

The Gnoll then meanders away and finds a seat. He picks up the bird carcass as if it were a holy relic. He rolls the chicken around in his hands, trying to decide where to begin the feast. Eventually he chooses to start with the head. With one big bite, he tears off the head and most of the neck off of its body. The display is quite gruesome to all sitting near the barbarian, as he a) does not chew with his moth closed and b) allows the blood to trickle out of his moth and drip on to his fur and clothing. "Chicken good. Derror like chicken."

Justinian

During the meal Justinian kept to himself, his only words spoken were a quiet, stammered "thank you" to the cook. He did not mind that the bread was stale, he was used to modest food at the temple. His appetite quickly soured when he saw the gnoll chomping down on the dead chicken. In a quiet protest he nudged his seat a little further away from Derror.

Even though the beer was fairly week it rose to Justinians head, he generally never had more than half a pint, he was on his second now. Feeling a little tipsy, confused and intrigued, he decided he needed some answers from the group. "So, does anyone know what exactly is going on here? What are we being sent in to?"

Gerta acknowledged the others with a simple nod, then moved out to get food. She ate without speaking, staring at her plate more than anywhere else. Occassionally, she'd sneak a peek at the others, but typically returned her gazed hurriedly to the task at hand. She did pause and stare wistfully as the dog-man walked off and tore into his raw chicken, the sight evoking primal urges in her for some reason.

Shaking it away, she finished her meal, mumbling thanks to the cook and sat back, wondering how she could be expected to in charge of anything, let alone other people. Once, her life might have been meant for something akin to being 'in charge' ... now, she just wanted to serve and find her own way.

Lost in thought, she didn't reply to Justinian's question. But after a few moments she shrugged and murmured, "We're Legion. We do as told.".

How could it be any simpler?

During the meal, Salvei often rips a chunk off of whatever he's eating and tosses it over his shoulder. Once finished he settled into a corner and patted his lap, resulting in a collection of rats scurrying over him.

"So, does anyone know what exactly is going on here? What are we being sent in to?"

Not hearing Gerta's response, he speaks up "All are being sent where all are needed, to kill or capture we would assume." He shrugged, petting the rodents on his lap. Not paying any mind when one scurries off and another returns in its place.

Dusk falls.

The six of you, Derror, Gerta, Justinian, Salvei, Allanar and Eli are mustered in the cellar of the Legion safehouse. Sgt. Ben Zara waves away all pretense of parade attention and has you all gather around a crude map of Outpost Taldras Four:

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6688/outpost4.jpg

"It has now been a week since Outpost Four fell. This happened in three stages:"

She points to the map with a stick as she recounts the events.

"Just after muster, a pair of Legion deserters appeared from the south, pursued group of Twice-Blooded light cavalry. One was killed, the other reached the gates. The Pig Scouts told Cprl. Harrigson, leader of Squad Six these two had desecrated some holy site or some such, and we were to surrender the surviving deserter. Captain Ferros rebuked this request, as per Legion policy."

She points to the building marked "infirmary."

"The dead deserter was laid in state here. Seems Pvt. Gurrock, a southern gnoll was most insistent he get a proper burial."

She then points to an area west of the walls.

"Third watch after dark, said dead deserter rose up, as did a score of dead buried to the west of the Outpost. They proceeded to break down the main gates."

And again pointing south.

"Then persons unknown appeared to the south and completed the destruction of the gates. These attackers may or may not have been in concert with the undead. This is unlikely as the undead attacked these newcomers as well. It needs to be noted the second attackers had strong magical aid, as we were beset for siege golems, five in number, each was magically camouflaged until they began to fire upon the gate."

She now points to the stockade.

"At some point during this melee, the deserter used this as an opportunity to escape. Cprl. Gerta was among the Squad Six dispatched to collect him."

She draws a line heading southeast.

"This Squad bypassed the outside attackers. Captain Ferros and Squads One through Four sallied forth to meet our attackers. I remained within the Outpost commanding Squad Five, attempting to repell the still-risen undead."

She then draws a line along the northwest corner of the Outpost.

"The Captain and all hands were killed. He single-handedly destroyed two of the golems before succumbing to his injuries. When it became clear the Outpost was lost, myself, Pvt. Shale here and Pvt. Denin exited the Outpost through a hidden sally port to the northeast shore. We reconnoitered the base to determine the identity of our attackers, but from our investigation we could only determine they were not the Twice-Blooded encountered the day prior. We then proceeded to a hidden boat along the shore. We determined it best to wait until the next night as day was now breaking."

She then points to the southeast again.

"Cprl Gerta returned the next evening and rendezvoused with us. She and Pvt. Denin were cut down as we rowed for Clot. Due to possible Intelligence she may possess, Cprl. Gerta was determined to be raised. We are here now."

She rolls up the map.

"You, my fine Bigjobs, have a four-part task: One, you are to return to Outpost Taldras Four under whatever cover you deem appropriate. Two, you are to determine the identity of the powers involved in the attack on our Outpost. Three, you are to head southeast and rendezvous with Cprl. Harringson's Squad Six. Four, you are to find the deserter and exact swift Legion Justice upon him."

She pauses, looking for comprehension.

"That means kill him, and if possible bring back his head for Traitor's Hill."

A passive pyramid of skulls outside of Outpost Taldras One, made of the severed heads of Legion deserters, criminals, et cetera.

"Questions?"

k:h- Half-orcs who take two bloodoaths. One to serve their Emir to the death, one to drive out all foreign powers. Half-orcs are generally integrated in Taldras, given sanctuary after pogroms in Thenes drove most orc-blooded from their lands. Long story. Very compelling.

Bk- The caliph and the various emirs in Taldras are not known for their ability to field something as expensive as siege golems. Foreign (non-Taldras) powers are trying to take advantage of the current state of strife among the emirs to carve out colonies here. Along with Renakor, Ekern, Thenes, Jenador and Entaurus all have "volunteer" armies abroad.

The barbarian helps his friend seal the deal for the wand. The group then heads off to listen to the Sergeant speak. The gnoll doesn't pay much attention. Common was not his first tongue and he often struggled with its complexities. He preferred the guttural yaps and high pitch moans of his native gnollish. Still, he tried his best to follow along. Then boredom struck. Talking was exhausting, worse than a day's march. He shifted his weight from side to side, scratched his mane of hair and fiddled with the hilt of his flail. Anything was better than sitting here talking about doing things. Derror was a man of action. A weapon forged in the hellfires of battle. Talking was for smarter people. The gnoll preferred the simplicity of combat. Towards the end of the debriefing, his ears perked up.

"Derror thinks all deserters deserve death. Derror will kill deserter. Can head be smooshed by flail? Derror like flail. Derror also has glaive but glaive harder to use. Flail hit, flail kill. Derror love flails."

Commiting the crude map to memory as best he could, he then turned to Gerta, doing a short nodding-bow before continuing. "Do you remember the state of Squad Six before your rendezvous? Any information may be of great assistance."

An idea popped into his head, leading Salvei to turn back to the Gnome. "We are curious. Is it known by you which won control of the outpost? If the Undead and Invaders attacked each other, quite likely one won."

It was always better to be prepared.

"...we? Oh yes. You're the Rat King. Remember regulations re: animal companion, by the way. No attacking Leionnaires, no attacking allied civilians, only eat allotted Legion stores or what you scavenge elsewhere. Anyway, the exit/ingress is here:"

She points to an area just west of the fort along the beach.

"This exit is surrounded by a field of blast discs and stones with simple cantrips cast upon them, so as to confuse people who might cast about detecting magic to find said blast discs."

Blast disc: magical landmine, found in Heroes of Battle.

"Well until further notice, you can consider this little bolthole as the nominal Outpost Taldras Five. After you have determined the parties holding Outpost Four, a decision will be made as to whether to reclaim or destroy Outpost Four."

"You are all on active special duty. You are outside regular chain of command, as you are currently attached to an Outpost under enemy control. This means you are not required to report for muster at your base of command each morning. This also means you cannot easily access your monthly pay or requisition supplies through normal channels."

She looks at Zaegel very pointedly.

"The rumors of a 'Black Market' within the Legion are just that, a scurrilous lie placed by our enemies to lower morale. And anyone saying otherwise should be reported to me so that I may refute the rumor personally."

"You can contact me through any means you have at hand, or return here. If I am killed, you will need to contact Major LeBerg at Outpost Taldras Two, the closest outpost to here after Four. Now get out of here."

As time passes, your Squad may earn an official nickname, which can add to your renown.

Night in Clot is a different kettle of fish altogether from daytime. Everyone with any sense scuttles into their respective holes. Those who would prey on them, those too stupid or too destitute to hide, and those with nothing to fear still walk the dark alleys between decrepit buildings.

Derror and Illanar can see easily in even this low-light. The rest see only silhouettes and small flickering torches. From your briefing, you know the boat you have requisitioned is on the dock to the south. The only businesses open are the tavern tent and the brothel. You are still not in uniform.

It seemed her memory would not be the difference between success and failure, so she stood when dismissed and walked out. Turning to the others, she spoke, her voice thick and slow. "We've got a mission. Get supplies, we leave soon. If you have ideas, say them. Pretty simple, ya?"

She waited to see if anyone had anything to say, but otherwise, she planned on heading back to the room for rest and leaving in the morning. Of course, she might be swayed by a better plan ...

What do your Half-Elf eyes see?

As your party moves away from the safehouse, you see the human who led you there-Mehmet-hurriedly ushering armed men towards it.

By their outfits and race, they must be half-Orcs loyal to one of the emirs actively belligerent towards the Legion.

Taldras is divided into ten Emirates. They are constantly at war with each other.
Emir Hamid Ay Tildris is allied with the Legion as he is cash-rich but soldier poor. Some of the other nine emirs have thrown their lot in with other foreign powers.
The Caliph is happy with this status quo as fighting emirs do not ally against him.
Additionally, some further emirs are very anti-foreigner and employ such martial groups as the aforementioned Twice-Blooded.

Ben Zara ponders your question.

"It seems a bit too obvious, even the Ekarshi wouldn't be stupid enough to break the Treaty in such an obvious fashion."

She looks at Eli.

"No offense," she adds as an afterthought.

"All the more reason to get Mehmet to the Question asap."

She points a thumb at the archivist.

"Private, you've just been redeployed. Mehmet here needs to be healthy enough to live long enough to answer, and I'm no healer. You, me Zaegel and Shale are taking the next thing that floats to Outpost Two. This safehouse is not safe anymore."

Combat not being something he signed up for, Justinian brightens at the idea of returning to the safety of high walls. Zaegel looks a bit flustered.

Hmmm ... Gerta doesn't really need anything, but we should probably save what we can.

"None taken," Eli says to Illanar. Eli is of the mind of grabbing literally everything that isn't nailed down, but the gods saw fit to curse him with his weak frame. He looks at the comparatively giant gnoll, and says to Derror, "If you have space to haul this loot, we out to carry it with us." Hearing Gerta, he nods. "That'd be a good cover, and a good way to carry our haul." He takes the arcane wand and scrolls and adds them to his own inventory, placing them in appropriate and easy to reach receptacles in his robes. If the rest of the group isn't onboard hauling the gear and the other magical items, he'll make sure he takes the black onyx with them.

Sgt. Ben Zara's Group

Justinian and Salvei both elect to accompany the gnome back to Outpost Taldras Two. After stowing what you can carry, you set some remaining alchemist's fire to burn the remains.

Ben Zara and company depart, and the rest of you bivouac with staggered watches along the beach of Clot.

Dawn comes and those of you who must prepare spells do so. With your gear and your mission, the small market and a possible cart and donkey (as well as how to get to the mainland) awaits.

The cart is loud, constructed entirely of wood and looks like it can fall apart at any given moment. The mule is definitely here for the food and has no interest in long-term camaraderie.

Since boats travel to and from this island daily, some sort of passage should be accessible. Shouldn't it?

Which will double as a 'still-here' check.

K'Zan, Farley & Davell

Following the attack on your supply ship, you three managed to get aboard a lifeboat with a few other Legionnaires. To your great misfortune, a siege golem boulder hit the lifeboat soon after.

You floated on jetsam for a day and a half slipping in and out of consciousness several times. Finally to day you came ashore on this shantytown island.

A little rest and some prayers to revive your flagging bodies and spirits later, you stand at the so-called docks of this spit of sand, looking for a way back to base, less you either be branded a deserter or declared dead and not receive your pay.

If he recalls correctly, Bishop Farley believes a deserter and black marketeer might have a little business here on this island. But the pious self-hating orc might object to such things, so he would have to approach the issue delicately.

"Mehmet was an idiot. First he attacks their secured position, and then he went and got killed."

A cloaked man flanked by two armed thugs approach.

"And why kill them? The man only wants the epaulets. You knocks 'em out, take the ranks for the bounty and then sell them to the slavers. Or hell, they might even surrender if you phrase it the right way."

The thugs nod at the sage advice. The stand before you now.

"Morning, lads," the cloaked one greets you. "Three choices: You give up and hand over your badges, and you start a nice new domestic career in Amcherack, we beat you within an inch of your life and then you wake up in chains to the mines of Jarlsberg, or you really annoy me and you wake up in Carceri."

The two thugs draw shortswords.

They don't seem very eager to talk...

I have to ask, are any of these fellows Human? If so, which ones? In case combat flows from this, it would change my general actions a good deal.

Side Note - I ready an action to strike at any of those who approach us. Just making it a given.
The Orcish slave stands by, simply holding on to his stick. Considering the fact that he wears no armor, has nothing more than a large stick and a cheap javelin, bears the rankings of one in the Penal Battalion and seems to have near-adoration subservience to the two others with him, others might think that he is less intelligent than even an average Orc - until they see his eyes. The firmness of cunning within those eyes shows that he must have some strange reason for his obedience. Instead of bothering to reply those who came forth to threaten them, he simply walks forward until he stands protectively in front of his allies. His words are simple and direct.

Would you like for me to stop them, masters?

K'Zan had been having a really bad day. All his time in the war he had been gathering and collecting a sizable amount of tools and knick-knacks that he had, ah, procured from others. Sure robbing from non-targeted civilians and superior officers was a big no no, but only if you get caught. He'd even gotten an extra dimensional storage space to keep it all in. All of it now at the bottom of the sea because of a stupid golem. Now he has nothing but the clothes on his back and the weapons in hand. One thing is for sure, they need money fast.

K'Zan took note of a couple of men with armor and weapon walking their way. That might work. Those weapons and armor could go for a pretty copper on the black market, and Farley says he knows someone who can hook them up. There didn't seem to be anyone else around, so maybe they could ambush those guys, take their stuff, and throw the bodies in the ocean. Of course they'd have to make sure the guys didn't make too much noise, and find some way to justify it to human loving orc.

K'Zan's plans change and his eyes widen as the thugs approach, threaten them, then draw their weapons.

Wait, you're trying to rob us?

A wicked grin spreads across K'Zan's face. Well, that simplifies things. Everything we to you now is self defense and completely justified by Legion law.

He slips his bow from his back and turns to Davell. If by "Stop them" you mean "beat them senseless and rob them blind", then yes, we're stopping them

Despite all that had happened in the past week, Farley was in relatively high spirits, he was still alive after the attack though that was due to him hiding inside a half empty barrel of preserved fish which did impart a rather potent addition to his already pungent odour. Freedom was within his sight, he was the first to head to the life boat and had almost been ready to depart before he was foiled by the bravery of other cowards seeking refuge from the battle. Others may have cursed the boulder but to Farley his prayers were answered, he was thinking of someone to escape the other legionnaires, something that would prove rather difficult with a party of that size, the giant rock crushed the majority of them with the exception of Farley and two others. It was unfortunate that it was their commander considering he was relatively loyal to the legion but patience was a game the changeling was relatively good at.

The thugs had proved to be an interesting addition the this misadventure, Farely was about to surrender because why fight when this was a sure fire way to get out of the legion but that was foiled by that blasted orc who was looking for a scrap. Now Farely had an interesting scenario before him and he planned on doing what he did best: Cowering in the back and riding the fence for as long as possible until the situation revealed who would come out on top. When the commander spoke up the cowardly priest looked up with false admiration "Yes commander, I will follow you into the jaws of hell, your strength gives me strength..... AIEEE!" With the gnomes attention focused elsewhere the changeling scuttles away.

Given that things had obviously become such a threat to his beloved 'Human' masters, Davell seemed quick to prepare for an aggressive method of protecting them - without killing any of the attackers, of course. They were Humans. Even enemy Humans deserved to be treated as though they were more than cattle that should be butchered. When they made it clear that their plans had been changed from "capture" to "kill" something seemed to alter in Davell's mind though.

While they may be Humans, now they were Humans who wished to butcher others for a few pieces of Gold - by selling the bodies to some sort of twisted little corpse-carving madman, to make things worse! Such disgusting enemies deserve no mercy. Enraged by the enemies, he charges at their leader as he manages to act before anyone else, swinging his Quarterstaff in as Lethal of a manner as possible.

Davell had never shown much talent at being a very good leader. He had always shown more talent at being an Orc... or a Monk... or an underling... or a slave to Humans... or a slave to Monks... or a slave to the mercenaries. So right now, when a stranger walks up, butchers some people (even if they were murderous thugs) and starts claiming to be a higher ranked individual that just happens to have hidden the proof... Davell is suspicious. After all, he isn't even Human - why would they go around throwing higher rankings to a non-Human that couldn't even keep himself from forgetting that they were hiding something so critical?

Still, he is not in charge here. He turns to his "Human" masters before making any sort of decision on his own. I don't know if we can trust them, my masters... this town has shown us nothing except murderers and butchers since we arrived, then they just happen to decide that they should kill what might just be nothing except competition before 'asking' for us to be obedient to them... right when they just happen to have hidden any proof that anyone gave them the right to command glorious Humans like yourselves? I question this, masters, I question this..."

You make a convincing argument. I am now completely and inexplicably convinced that you are actually a deep cover Legionnaire with the authority to give us orders. Please don't hurt us, or if you have to hurt us, hurt Pippy. He secretly likes it. Freak.

K'Zan addresses the others. Ok Private Darvell and Private Pippy, you heard the lady with the sharp metal weapon, this place is very dangerous for Legionnaires and since she is definitely a commanding officer and we are certainly not trying to scrounge up enough money to hire a boat and desert to freedom, we should follow her orders. Also, because you are both the same rank as me and there is now a higher ranking officer here, you two don't have to treat me like I have command over you any more. I no longer have responsibility over you.

With that, K'Zan pulls off his epaulets and sash and stuffs them in a bag. Orders, Princess?

Illanar winced lightly when meeting the three legionaries ... Could Joramy have sent any three people being less unique and groanworthy? Gerta obviously had some issues so against his better knowledge and fondness of his mental stability, Illanar decided to intercede.

"We've been sent on reconnaissance mission to Outpost Four by the headquarters trying to divine whom those Siege Golems was working for and who controls the area and if able to preperate the outpost for an incomming platoon. We've met up with Ben Zara and she've taken a captured combatant, the guy Mehmet these thugs mentioned, back to Headquarters for Questioning, while we're to continue our mission. This area is to be considered enemy territory until Outpost Four have been reestablished, and we're to keep our heads low, hence the lack of epaulets and sashes"

Looking at the pile of loot Illanar notices the bounty sheet and picks it up reading it, maybe it would have more directions than the previous one they found on Mehmets group. Not that they were likely to be able to follow up on the directions, but it could be worthwhile infomation to collect and pass on at a later point.

While still hesitant to follow the leadership of another who has such impure blood and no solid proof of higher leadership, the Orc has two solid rules that he is able to follow. One - follow the safe bet. They had begun speaking as though they could just as easily abandon us without a pinch of profit, then started picking through sources of information they would probably have already known if they were locals of the same job. Two - follow his masters. They were trustworthy Humans, after all. The wisdom of their leadership and the trickery of their false cowardice were more than enough to keep things safe... at least comparatively. So he simply nods and begins moving along to help with the looting silently.

Considering the fact that I am a Monk, so I can't really afford to wear any Shields or Armor, plus I happen to be a Melee focused character... with an AC of 12... could I have the Ring of Protection and Amulet of Natural Armor?

Special Legion Task Force

With your group so made and disguised, little more can be done on this small spit of sand.

You notice no one seemed to bat an eyelash at the carnage or the subsequent body burning. Most "civic-minded" Clot denizens are currently more intent on putting out the fire in the old Legion safehouse, so that they can take it up as a squat of their own.

Midmorning passes, and the shrimp boater K'Zan arrangned passage with appears.

"I cannot land near the place you speak of, for it is awash with jetsam from wrecked ships. A swarm of the sea-devils have been stirred by the dead afloat. I can instead give you passage to the port of Nisir."

Nisir
Town type: small town

Wealth: 104,707
Authority Class: Knight (Ruhk)
Authority Title: Ruhk

Illinar

It just so happens your last landfall before stowing away to Renakor was through the den of iniquity known as Nisir. In the four months you spent there you were intimately familiar with all the ins-and-outs of the town, and you know the best places to make a coin or lay low.

In fact... the One-Headed Ettin... You knew it sounded familiar; there is an inn by that name or similar smack-dab in the middle of the town. No idea who the Dasher is, however.

The huge woman peered out into the water, then looked back at the Captain. Shrugging, she nodded. "Fine. Let's go."

Loading up their things, Gerta found a spot to sit and consider what they were going to do upon reaching the island. And how they might reach the mainland. If nothing else, they could investigate these bounties ... and perhaps earn some more coin along the way.

Turning to Illanar, she murmured, "Check the gear, decide who gets it." Delegation was key to effective leadership ...

Gerta doesn't have any real needs right now ... so talk amongst yerselves

"Will do"

Illanar starts pilling up the loot in a number of different piles.

"I don't except anyone being particularily interested in the armor, shield or swords, so we'll load them on Derror with the intention of selling them when we get to Nisir, and unless Eli wants the dagger as a backup, i'd throw that in the same pile. Potions should either be carried by K'Zan or Eli as to be used in emergency. Manacles, can always be used at some point if we find the need to keep someone alive to port back to Question but it wouldn't matter to much who carries them. Scrolls I'd say to Eli as he can use them, and as for the Ring and Amulet... well, I don't have any obvious preferences to whom needs its so ..." Illanar notices Davell eying them, and looks him up and down a couple of times, cocking his head slightly while thinking for a few seconds "Maybe it would be best if the Orc wore them"

After finishing designating the loot Illanar goes over to Gerta and murmurs lowly, although he doesn't specificly try not to be heard, "Nisir would probably be quite nice to go to anyways. If i recall correctly from my travels this 'One-headed Ettin' mentioned on the bounty is placed in that port anyways so we could try and sniff up this 'Dasher' the bounty sheet talks about, while there anyhows"

So then...

With Davell outfitted with the enchanted ring and amulet, the boatman patiently waits for your cart and mule to be loaded.

So loaded, he poles the boat off the dock and raises a small sail.

Three hours later, you come within site of the town of Nisir. As Illinar expected, a harbormaster's assistant rows out in a dory to inspect the ship.

"If you want to moor, you need to pay their fee," the boatman says. The tone indicates his view of such obvious graft.

The imperious man in the dory indeed demands a fee, 20 silver pieces.

"Fees paid upfront, coin only, no barter. State your business, ferenghi," he says, exulting in the small power he wields.

At the mention of dolling out the loot Farley springs to attention up from the ground and shrewdly glares at the newcomer "The orc? Bah those are the two most valuable pieces of loot they shouldn't go to one person and if they do I demand he forfeit any further shares of loot for an agreed set of time, I am the only one of the three of us that killed one of them!" The changeling crosses its arms and pouts, he didn't care about logic at this point he risked his neck so he deserved shinies dammit!

@ Rhudspeth: have Davell take them, as for the rest of the loot it is worthless to Farley though your WBL is not much higher than everone elses since you have 4000 gp worth of magic items to yourself so don't expect further dibsing until it evens out a bit.

Davell merely nods to what the others say, one way or the other, never bothering to speak. Even when it comes to the concept of giving him the magical items, he seems to have very little to bother saying - or even feeling - about the entire issue. In fact, his first real display of emotions seems to come when the one known as Farley begins speaking...

He doesn't seem upset by the idea of losing future loot though. In fact, the only part he really seems to have any emotional reaction to is being referred to as "the orc" during the angry speech. The fact that this could be taken as a racial insult doesn't offend him though. Instead, he seems to take it as a firmly agreeable viewpoint. Evidently, he isn't a fan of his own race.

This could wind up getting a bit entertaining... it seems like I may have already drawn us into a bit of a kerfluffle by having my Starting Gold being set at a gigantic 0 and already needing some just to stole on by. :)
The Orc Monk merely continues silently blinking at the man who begins speaking in the Orc language for a few seconds before he finally opens his mouth and replies in the Common language.

"There is no real need to speak in the Orcish language - it is a fairly shameful language to start with, especially when you speak it with such pointlessly poor word usage. As you may have seen from the lack of armor and fancy weapons, I have not been gifted with Gold and Jewelry, but am instead a slave. You must demand that my fee come from them - if they are willing, of course."

You aren't intimate with the town, but you do know most towns here have a "free market" for buying & selling items that are not under sanction.

Poisons, destructive (i.e. can do damage) magical items (excluding weapons), as well as potatoes and tobacco (relatively new imports from North Garlorand) are forbidden to be sold to the general public.

If you have the time to chat with the merchants, you should have no problem moving most of your acquired gear, with the 1500 gp limit of course.

He nods in appreciation at the covering of his fee - though it may be little more than a fine to cover the costs in order to keep their combatant slave nearby, he seemed to understand that modern actions of courtesy required a motion of gratitude in order to keep others pleased. After all, while this may not be very Orcish behavior, the fact that it was not very Orcish behavior had clearly been made into something which he had been raised to appreciate. At any rate, he returned to his mostly silent stance, waiting for the others to state their points.

He did seem drawn to mutter the obvious concern once no other could hear of course. "While I hate their existence, considering how... filthy and dishonest... this area has shown itself to be so far, I should ask you the obvious question. Will we be forced into putting up with the Black Market style wurms while we are trying to return to a safer place?"

And no ... fawning." The last was directed at Farley, with seeming difficulty with that last word.

Not entirely certain on what might be done, Davell looks around with a bit of uncertainty. Until recently, he had been held as a servant and slave to a Human Monastery. After this, he had found himself bought and sold around into the Mercenary force, where he mostly found himself doing simple physical work as a slave - at least until recently. When a random attack had lead to him defending himself surprisingly well, he had been promoted to a warrior-slave... but this still all adds up to a simple fact. Traveling around, being caught on ambushed boats, needing to hide his identity, having to deal with people... why couldn't it be as nice and simple as slavery?

Um, Princess, speaking as someone who has tried to sell ill-gotten gains before, it's usually not as simple as "set up stall, start selling goods." There are rules and regulations that need complying, butts that need kissing, and bribes and "protection" that needs paying before you can even think about setting up a stall. Unfortunately, I'm no expert in merchanting. I just sell my acquired possessions to the nearest black market vendor. I highly recommend doing that here, but it's not going to help us with setting up a cover story. How soon do you want us actually set up and selling, for how long, and how much gold are you willing to spend to make it happen?

Bishop Farley, Eli, Gerta, Illanar

Asking the right people, you find yourself fast-tracked to a stall permit with a mere application of gold to the right people (40 gp altogether).

Within an hour most of your mundane 'battle trophies' are sold. Young and eager sellswords are flocking to the Twice-b
Blooded banner. Promises of expelling hated foreigners while traipsing about the countryside looking like big men draw all sorts.

By mid-afternoon you have liquidated your weapons and armour.

K'Zan, Derror and Davell

With the gnoll and orc serving as protection, you dig a little deeper into the town's underside, finding a willing buyer for your more illicit gear, albeit at 75% of its usual resale.

Not 100% what you want to keep, so I leave the math upon your honor.

Derror

You know orcs in the Northerlund; good warriors, but not-too-tasty flesh. This Davell is lighter-skinned that arctic orcs, and you have not heard any orc use such fancy words as this one. His muscled frame suggest he would need much gnawing if eaten fresh.

Davell

You are assigned, much to your chagrin with the gnoll. While darker-furred than those you were trained to kill (Know Your Enemy, thus sayeth Zarus), he represents everything distasteful about their inhuman kind.

Evidently, things in this crime-choking-city are not yet appealing to Davell. In addition to the smelly Gnoll that the he tries his best to avoid standing too close to (although it isn't clear whether this is from distaste based on odor, appearance or just plain racism) he also gives distrusting gazes at those who share his own Orcish heritage. Certainly, they had earned at least a bit of forgiveness thanks to the blessings of Human blood running through them though. But he still seemed to be frustrated as he mumbled quietly to himself, albeit in a language he hoped few used.

"Our ships are destroyed before we can arrive, we have to hide our identities, I'm stuck with this filthy Gnoll, this town has an Orc-blood taint -and- to top it off we have to sell to the black market. After leaving Gerta, K'Zan does indeed go shopping. Trailed by the Orc and Gnoll, K'Zan sells his a few of the goods. Upon seeing the half-orcs, his face lit up.

Oh, half-orcs!. Looks like we might have an opportunity to make a bit more money!

Items sold:
3 Masterwork Manacles: 56.25 gp (base price 150, resale 75, 75 x 0.75 = 56.25)
Spellbook: 2512.5 gp (34 cantrips + 6 1st level spells + 6 2ndlevel spells + 5 3rd level spells = 67 pages. Resale = 100 gp per page/2 = 3350 x 0.75 =2512.5)

Davell clearly doesn't seem to be pleased by the situation at hand. He also (somewhat less clearly) has spent most of his life trying to convince himself that his own intelligence is as lowly, or perhaps lower than, that of his own Race. However, he is handicapped by a few things. First, his intelligence is actually above average by a good deal, especially compared to most Orc creatures. Second, that Intelligence is enough to realize the implications of his own mercenary ranking. Third, he was aware of the implications of the tiny, less hairy, less muscular Dwarf-Gnome-Halfling creature... Fourth, with the implications being very unpleasant, he also realized that the superior ranking of the short-one had several applications that he would not be able to stop.

Considering how low that Roll came out to be, I think there is a good chance of our tiny ally being busted here.[dice]1d20+1[dice]
