The Deep Ball

Ancient gates mark the passages to the underground realm of the Prevaz. Although worn by time, graceful inscriptions and the remnants of ancient statues can still be seen. Guided by a Prevaz guide, also responsible for navigating the thick jungle on the surface, you descend into the deep darkness. Your torches light up the walls of immense caverns, deep lakes with crystal-clear waters and strange otherworldly vegetation and fungi. The guide doesn’t seem even slightly bothered by the dark, leading the group towards the capital on path hewn from the floors of this ancient place. Around you, singing can be heard sometimes, delicate notes gracefully echoing through the caverns. Getting nearer to the capital, the amount of villages increase, houses hewn from the cavern walls or build from stone blocks. All of them are built with the accuracy and precision of expert craftsmen, the entire village one whole. All villages are pitch black, for the Prevaz do not require light to see their surroundings. Everywhere, the villagers are kind and welcoming, offering food and drink to the passers-by, telling stories of their ways of life and mythologies.

Finally, the torchlight shines upon the outer walls of Gwithva, Skianz’ capital. Inside the city itself, everything the light touches seems to be art. Statues, carvings and the houses themselves crafted by skilled hands. Songs echo throughout Gwithva’s halls, graceful and alluring dancers dancing to the rhythm. Children seem to “watch” you, their ears clearly aimed in your direction, with some bold ones even coming forward and asking you playful questions.

Suddenly, great gates appear from your eyes, figures and events of ancient history carved into them with great precision. As the gates swing open, you are welcome inside the palace where the ruling couple reside. For the occasion, even though the Prevaz have no use for light, the walls are littered with torches, spreading a pleasantly soft blue light through the great hall. A pair of well-dressed Prevaz welcome you, smiles upon their lips. The woman slithers forwards, dressed in a dress embroiled with intricate displays and patterns, clearly a work of art. Her torso is smaller and slimmer than the man’s, but her tail is longer, more slender and covered with charms and pieces of cloth. She speaks to you and your company.

“Welcome, dear guests, to our home. We are honored you could make it. I am Kara, and this is my husband Jentyl. We are the Lymners, or rulers, of Skianz. Please come further and make yourself at home. Tell us about your homes and your lives, for we are curious what art may be found in your stories.”

The man, Jentyl, nods politely and friendly to you and beckons you to one of the many tables in the hall. He is dressed in an embroiled shirt, with woven bracers and belt complementing his attire.

“I hope you find our preparations adequate. The foods and customs of those who live on the surface are not well known to us. Hence our request for some of your local cuisine. Cooking is an art in and of itself too, after all.”

A servant hands your group pieces of parchment detailing the schedule for the night.
