The morning is gusty, blinding white clouds covering the sky from horizon to horizon. The trees, small and stunted conifers, are swaying and shedding their needles. At least the mosquitoes and flies that were your constant companions for two weeks of travel have left, but the smell of mud and rot is still heavy under the canopy.
"It should only be about five minutes that way", the factor explains, pointing into the forest away from the manor house. "Beats me why they put it so far away from the main building, really, most people want their servants close. There should be a path, but..."
He points at the ground, a uniform mass of brown needles and black, tarry mud that long ago swallowed anything resembling a pathway.
"You should see it soon. We're on a bit of a hill, so if you walk down, you should end up there. All straight south. Don't get lost, I don't want to have to send a second party to find you. It's just a small building, two stories, three families. Have a quick look around, report back.
