Bit of advice, please

I might be joining a new group soon and I haven't played 5th edition yet. Don't really want to spend money on a book if things don't work out with my schedule. So I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to somewhere I can find the information I need to get started. Please and thank you.

A good place to start would be the basic rules (https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules), which includes basics of play, as well as what you would need to know for some of the basic classes. It is an incomplete preview, as it really doesn't let you see the customization, but it allows you to get a feel for it.
