[3.5] Communication Options

Hey all,

Looking for ways for an NPC to be able to contact the party; specifically through an item. When the NPC has urgent news for the party, or vice versa, they can contact each other.

Happy for it to be a custom item of a spell, and it's fine if it only works 1/week (actually, this would be better than constant communication).

Party is 5 level 8s, NPC is ECL 13 (Half-celestial Elf Healer).

All suggestions welcome (except Psionics, sorry).

At the other extreme there's a set of magic mirrors in complete scoundrel that are basically a set of magical skype phones. They can only contact the other 7 made in their same set though.

There is also the spell Whispering Flame from Eberron. It requires two candles.

Awakened pigeon messenger? Then it can make witty banter with the party.

Whispering Sand (Sa) is one of the better communication spells.
It works for 10 minutes/level, can link multiple creatures at the same time (1/CL) and the only requirement otherwise is that any recipient either needs to be in an area of sand, dust or ash or carry 1 pound of it with them as a focus.
No range limit, no word limit and it's a 3rd level spell for both wizards and druids.
