"Very good, send them in."

A guard bows to the speaker and walks to a large metal door.
"BRING... IN... THE DIPLOMATS!" he shouts. Twelve guards escort a dwarf, a human, a gnome, a half-orc, and an armoured female human into the room. The guards are elite soldiers of Baron Reldir's Special Guard - and are each armed with a halberd and a short-sword. They wear breastplates emblazoned with the symbol of Anur.

The room is in the centre of Baron Reldir's Castle, and is used as the council room. Banners of Anur's symbol (the back of a white horse rearing in front of a large city) adorn the walls - crossed swords hang between every two of the banners. No windows grace the room. The weak candle light from several candelabra at each wall, being the only thing to penetrate the darkness.

"Ahhh - so you are the diplomats chosen to represent Anur," states a half-elf, sitting at the large desk in the middle of the room. One candle sits above the mass of papers sprawled over the steel desk. One can just barely glimpse that the Half-Elf sitting there happens to be Baron Reldir himself. "Please, come forward and introduce yourselves," requests the Baron. "Tell me the reasons that caused each of you to... decide to join this remarkable quest."

One of the group members, a gnome with short, brown hair, stands up and makes a little bow. He wears a cloak that is covered with stitched feathery patters in silver and olive. "Well, let's see. My name is Krey Bom. I'm a druid of the order of the Silverleaf. I suppose my first reason for coming here was simple curiosity. However, since arriving, I simply decided that I would rather this country not go to war, and I'm here to make that happen. I speak Orc, so I should be able to help with negotiations when the need arises." He then sits back down, looking fairly self-consious after his speech.

An interesting thing about Baron Reldir, was that his smile- even when well intentioned -was capable of breaking the nerve of everyone in the room. He was smiling now. "A very admirable reason indeed," he said, his white teeth flashing in the candle light. The guards wince. "Most orcs can speak the common tongue, but still it's alway useful to avoid... confusion, when two groups are speaking.
"Who would be next for their... self introduction?"

With hollowed out eyes and a pale complexion, he couldn’t help but think he was a little thinner. Gauli didn’t bother trying to smile as he looked the baron straight in the eye. “My clan is called Springweather, Baron. I’m a son of the nearby caverns your Excellency recently visited on parley.” His gravelly tone told everyone he hadn’t gotten much sleep. He would have smiled to any other ruler, but by then he had found those teeth. He lowered his eyes as soon as he could.

Baron Reldir turns to the dwarf. He is still smiling, but now with his mouth closed. "Ah yes," he said, his teeth flashing with every opening of his mouth. "The Dwarf Caverns - charming in its... quaintness. Has the ceiling been raised yet?"
One of the guards, at the back of the group, lets out a quiet snicker at Reldir's comment. In the flicker of candlelight, the Baron's ears suddenly look to almost be twitching. He turns away from the Springwheather dwarf, guards shuffling to keep out of line of sight. The icy gaze finally stops upon the guard who snickered. He looks very alone.

"Ah..." Baron Reldir begins, with a pause ensuing. This is often a bad sign. "Simmons, wasn't it?"
"Yes sir," the guard answers quietly, fixedly studying his feet.
"Tell me... Simmons," the Baron continues. Every one of his teeth can be seen now, the grin on his face dripping with the stuff of nightmares. "What was it you found so... humorous?"
"Erm, well... you see, sir," the guard struggles to reply. He gives a slight glance up at the Half-Elven face of his conversation partner. This is enough to glue his chin to his breastplate. "It's jus' tha', you bein' so clever with insultin' tha' dwarf in tha'..." There is one fact that most people know about the Baron - and this is that no one laughs at his sardonic comments and lives to not regret it.
"Insult?" the Baron repeats, seeming offended. The majority of the guards look at the snickerer with great pity, including the snickerer himself. "You dare say that I of all people would insult my dear friends the dwarves?"
"N-no, sir, I-"
"Enough!" interrupts Reldir with the sweep of a hand. "I'll have no more of your accusations. Take him to the Stockade."
"B-but - I-" before the snickerer finishes, he is escorted out of the room by two guards.

The Baron sighs deeply. "Now," he begins, "Which member of our diplomatic group is next for self introduction?"

I wish I wasn't here. I wish I wasn't here.
The mage, tall with cloths that seemed to be dragging his arms down, speaks with a quiver in his voice, visibly unnerved.
Uhh.. That would be me, Mexanis, lord, from the Mages college. I also speak and read orcish, and my thesis is on orcs, and their umm... diplomatic practices.
During the speech, he takes out a silver coin from his pouch, and begins twirling it around his fingers. After the speech, he continues to twirl it, seemingly unconscious of the motion.

Thargol just stands there, aiming too remain calm in the presence of so much strangers and the baron himself. Breathing deeply, regularly.
"It´s all much easier digging ditches or working the fields" he thought. The calm, the simple straightforward approach to things. There was not much chance of spoiling anything with strange behavior or his orcish heritage, what with orcs not being terribly popular these days.

While he stood there, with the hands in front of his navel, palms upward and fingers interlocked, he waited for the baron to comment his predecessor introduction, fidgeting with his thumbs "Lets just get this over with...."

A small exhale was the only thing that showed his displeasure. He leaned back on his heels and clasped his forearms together behind him. A small protest went up in his mind and he swore it would be in his report. That level was the only one the Baron had been allowed to visit. And they had just started building it.

((Sorry for keeping you waiting. This is the problem with the need to sleep))

"Ah yes," Baron Reldir says, smiling at Mexanis with his teeth apart. It gives the effect of a wolf, about to devour its victim. "The Mages' College. I'm ever so glad that you've... volunteered for this task.
"I was wondering at which point the wizards would become useful - and it seems to be the one at which any historian would do just as well."

The Baron takes his gaze away from Mexanis, and looks over the remaining candidates. "Next..." Reldir says, pausing as his eyes view the half-orc, "'person', please."

Philosophy wars with reflexive respect for nobility; the smile wins. The woman with the chain body armor keeps her eyes fixed on the edge of the Baron's desk. "I'm here to help prevent war, sir. I was passing through, and it seems a group like this will go places a healer is needed." Having said her piece, she lets her focus slip from the top edge of the desk to the bottom. Noticing she has left out a detail that might be important, she speaks up again. "My name's Arianelle."

"A pleasure to meet you, Arianelle," Baron Reldir replies. "A healer is such a valuable necessity to this... venture, that the services of even a woman are very welcome.
"Now... 'who' is left for me to become acquainted with?"

"I....I´m Thargol" he began to reply, slightly stuttering "I hail from the blackspar monastery. We are your subjects as well, and I was sent as a courier, posessing some skills for overland travel". He than proceeded to bow, very slightly, before the baron, with sweat beading his Forehead.

"Ah yes, the Blackspar Monastery. Thank you ever so much for informing me that it's within my influence," the Baron replies - giving Thargol a smile so friendly that the guards look as though they wish to run and hide. "It is wonderful to have such an enlightened creature as yourself to help us.
"Now. If you've all been introduced, then I suggest we move on to your briefing."

Baron Reldir puts out his hand. The Guard who called for the emissaries (who seems to be the captain of the Elite Guard) places several papers into the outstretched hand. "As you already know," Reldir says, as he reads over the papers, [The emissaries and the guards are then spared from Reldir's attention] "a tribe of orcs to the west of Anur have been growing in strength. Our last attempt at attacking their camp failed, due to the fact that they are in some kind of alliance with the kobolds.
"Since we took severe casualties in the attack, orcs are proliferate breeders, and war is a common event when orcs are involved-" the Baron looks up at the emissaries, "-we think that establishing a treaty would be in the City's best interests."

Reldir hands one of the papers over to the Captain. "Your mission," the Baron begins again, turning his head back to his desk, "is to travel to the orc camp, recover what information you can and- first and foremost -establish peace with the orcs.
"You will receive any equipment you need for the journey, as well as any weapons and armour you find necessary for completing the task."

The Half-Elf stamps a paper, and seals it within an envelope. He holds it up in front of himself, bringing his gaze upon the group. "Whoever takes this letter," he says, smiling gently, "will be legally established as the leader of your group, and will be charged with seeing it delivered to the Orc Chief.
"Which of you is to step forward and take this... responsibility?"

Krey jumps a bit at the proclamation. He had almost been thinking of overcoming his fear of the Baron and taking the letter, but now it looked as though it was out of his hands.
Wierd, that's almost a relief. He thinks. Though, leader or not, I'm still gonna have to do the best I possibly can, if for no other reason then not to make this Baron guy mad at me. He begins to nervously paw his walking-staff.

Awww, I almost wanted the letter. PS. Great campaign so far, I love it!

The Dwarf settles in behind the new leader as quickly as he can, doing his best to avoid attention. "You'll do fine, lad." He intones gently. "Big bad bully on the throne is as big a baby I've ever seen." His muscles look relaxed, and his face haggard. He was trying to hide any unease, and hoped he was doing a good job.

The Baron raises his left hand. All the guards place the tips of their halberds very close to the dwarf's neck. "You're lucky that I don't care about such trivial insults," says Baron Reldir, "because if you were talking to the Orc Chief, you'd be tortured to death and hung from the castle walls. But I don't care, of course." He lowers his left hand slowly, and the guards retract their halberds. "Now, take this letter and be off to the orc stockade." He holds out the letter, waiting for it to be taken.

Gods. If the Orcs are this dangerous, we'll need a cool head to survive this. Thinks Krey. Krey turns to look at Mexanis. Sorry lad, but it's obvious you can't bear the pressure if you are made leader. That outburst was nervous pressure, nothing more, and if you were actually responsible for us, I think you'd crack. He looks at the dwarf. And if you are careless like that in front of the orcs, we're all dead. He sighs mentally, being careful not to actually sigh out loud in the Baron's presence. Then I guess it's come to me.

Krey stands up slowly. "I'll take the letter, and humbly accept the mantle of leadership." He bows slightly, and takes the letter from the Baron's waiting hand. He immediately feels the unseen weight of duty and responsibility settle onto his shoulders. He futilely tries to mentally still his fluttering heart, and takes a mental deep breath. Well, that's it. No turning back now. "Now.. Sir Baron Reldir? This letter. Is it meant for us to read, or are we delivering it to the orcs? Or is there, perhaps, some other purpose for it?

Sorry Melkor, but Krey's reasoning is my own. Mexanis just aint cut out for leadership right now. And the dwarf would get us all executed if he isn't more careful.

Arianelle's head snaps around for a surprised second look at the mage. I didn't see that. Well, now I don't have to take it...

Her contemplation of the new leader is cut off by the Springweather dwarf's remark, and she stares at him in utter disbelief. That...stupidity or courage alone can't begin to explain that... As the guards step in, she turns away to stare fixedly at the desk again.

The gnome stepping up takes her by surprise yet again, a feeling she is getting tired of rapidly. She looks back and forth between gnome and man, before settling back on the desk. I hope there's no conflict there...

"The letter," Baron Reldir says, bright to a terrifying extent, "is an introduction from me, and it's to be given to the orc chieftain.
"Congratulations on becoming the leader of your... group. Satus, take them to the armoury to be properly... equipped for their journey."
"Yes, lord," answers the Captain. He then hits his breastplate with his right hand, and salutes with his left (the common salute for Anur). He and the twelve guards begin escorting the party to the armoury.
"Oh, one more thing," Reldir interrupts, halting the guards. "If you start a war, I'll personally see to it that you fight at the front of it. Good luck on your quest!"

The emissaries are brought through the narrow, dimly lit passageways they came through. The company stops at a large metal door, which the captain knocks eleven times upon. It opens.

The armoury isn't a vast improvement from the Baron's Council room. It is brighter, being filled with several hanging torches, but the racks of weapons give one a similar feeling to the Baron's teeth. "We have quite a large selection," Captain Satus says, "but noting to exotic. Tell me what weapons and armour each of you would like and I'll see what I can do."

The Captain brings out a heavy metal shield and gives it to Gauli. He then brings out a scroll, which he unrolls before the group. "This is the map to the orc camp," he says, "There are three ways of getting there:
"One. Going through the forest, Anur's Garden, which is directly between here and the camp. It's likely to be the quickest way - but.... It is also where our archers were ambushed, and could still contain kobold lying in wait.
"The second way, is going around the forest, through Grengill's Plain-" Grengill is the name of the white horse on Anur's Banner [legend says that he was tied to a mountain by the devil. But rather than stay there for eternity, Grengill uprooted the mountain, and ran for a hundred miles before he stopped to rest. Here is where he is said to have stopped, here where the city of Anur was built out of the mountain.] "-this being the second fastest way there. The problem is, that the area is still littered with caltrops, and contains a good deal of traps.
"The last method available for reaching the camp, would be to go through the Mountain's Trench-" a long series of gullies which is said to have been made by the weight of the mountain, "-which although being the longest route, is probably the safest as well."

The Captain looks over the emissaries, and absentmindedly hands an axe to the half-orc (whether it's an axe for wood or an axe for battle, is very hard to say). "So, what's it going to be then?" he asks. "Don't take too long deciding on it."

After hearing the leader mention fighting with gusto, Gauli could almost swear he felt his eyes sink deeper into his face. It sounded like a bad idea, but if he didn't keep a firm lip then things might be worse. He ignored the bags under his eyes and leaned on his Waraxe. "Hike to it, then." "GRRRAAAAAAAHHHGGG!!!" Ghe shouts- or roars -directly into the captain's ear.

The captain leans in the direction of the blast of sound, loses his balance, and topples into a rack of shields, which proceeds to fall on him. "CLANG!" it says when hitting the ground, and the Captain.
Gnolley performs a hyena laugh (which sounds quite ghastly), snatches an arm full of Light Healing potions and urges the emissaries to all come outside with him, fast. "I'll have your head mounted on my wall for this!" the Captain shouts, "you walking rug!"

The party travels through the bustling city of Anur.

People stop and drop their loads as the Gnoll passes. Others runaway, sometimes screaming. A drunken man, upon seeing an eight-foot gnoll wave at him while saying "Grah-Grah!" decides to reform his drinking ways, for the rest of the day.
Many children's ears are boxed when they come home saying "Mum, mum! I saw a giant gnoll walkin' through the Merchant's District - it's true I swear!"
Most tend to get the reply of, "Here now! Stop making up stories and get back to your chores!"

Guards are dragged by various types of citizens to the Gnoll's location. "See, see? I told you there was a gnoll! So, what are you going to do about it then?" the citizens would say.
Most of the City's defenders', when they come face-to-face with an eight-foot gnoll with an axe in each hand, reply with something like, "S-so, what about it? I don't see him breaking any laws. Clear off now, or I'll take you in for wasting guard time."

After several events, the Party and their gnoll guide reach the city gates. Reluctantly, and after being shown official papers, the guards open Anur's gates. The Dwarf fishes through his pack and retrieves a large wrapped parcel. Carefully unfolding it, he breaks off a small chunk of chocolate and tosses it to the Gnoll. If he caught it in the air, the Dwarf wouldn't see it. He was too busy retrieving a small flask. Taking a hardy sip of the precious substance, he packed his belongings and waited quietly.

Arianelle takes the opportunity to strap on her buckler properly, then peer (one might even say gawk) up at the guide. I've never seen one of those before. He seems friendly enough. More than anyone at the castle... "I don't think the captain calling you 'Gnolley' means that's your name... What do you call yourself?

Rather than catch the chocolate in mid-air, Gnolley eats it in mid-air. "Bragh?" he replies to Arianelle's question, his mouth full of chocolate. "Brrgh bgh bgraa, Bgaaissh." After swallowing the chocolate, and making several more attempts at his name, Gnolley succeeds in telling the group that his name is "Gaariss".

Gnolley, that is, Gaariss, stretches himself as he reaches into his over-sized pouch-belt. He brings out a ragged, and crudely drawn, map - which, other than for several unreadable notes scrawled here and there, is almost identical to the map shown by the Captain, earlier. The Gnoll studies the map carefully, looks at his surroundings, and points to the forest, while saying "RrrgraaH!" triumphantly. Gaariss motions the party to follow him, and then descends the hill, heading towards the forest.

Following their gnoll companion, the group moves into the forest.
As the party moves through the lush undergrowth, the sky is replaced by a ceiling of beautiful spring leaves.

The strong grass grows to Gauli's neck, which would cause great discomfort to a dwarf who is ticklish.
Krey's view is completely masked by the tall vegetation, but with help from his dog (and by walking in the flattened track Gaariss had been through) he manages to keep up with the party.
Due to his height, Thargol's head gets whacked by the occasional low hanging branch, several of which being pulled aside by Gaariss and swinging back with momentum against the poor half-orc.
A spider descends in front of Mexanis - with a sudden wind, the spider is blown directly onto the Mage's nose, it's red fangs possibly inspiring terror.
Arianelle is meanwhile snatched at by a wait-a-minute bush, famed by its leaves' ability to catch onto anything they touch.

Ugh, getting that cleaned off won't be easy...isn't there a trail somewhere, so we wouldn't have to go through the brush? Or would it be a bad idea to take the trails? Drawing her sickle, she cuts the caught branch end off from the bush. After carefully wiping the blade on her loose leather pants and sheathing it, she hurries after the group, pulling off bits of stuck plant as she goes.

"Scree!" erupts from the bushes ((Beast (http://www.curri.miyakyo-u.ac.jp/image/dat/si/science-nature/tapir.gif))). The sound is followed by a strange (and remarkably cute) beast with an elephant-like nose (only shorter), bursting from the bushes. The donkey-sized beast squeals again (not unlike that of a pig) and falls to the grass, near death from many bolt wounds.
"Hssshhthhs!" comes out of the bushes.

A kobold dashes out of the bushes. It stops -- for only a split second -- looks surprised and runs back into the foliage. Gaariss -- with a smile promising nothing but trouble -- leaps over the fallen animal and pursues the kobold at full speed. "Scree..." the animal repeats, pathetically. Thargol

Already reeling from his multiple wounds, Thargol tries to reassert the situation. We need to free the gnoll or we´ll die. There is something I can do....
He sets his eyes the Kobold above the pit, the one poised to strike down those who would climb from their prison. He sets his feet and charges, dircetly towards the edge of the pit, leaps....clear of the Edge. Sailing through the air, his arms guarding his torso, his right leg coiled back.

And then, the leg viciously lashes out....

The kobold thrusts it spear at the flying half-orc. Although the head of the weapon missed, the shaft managed to strike squarely against his foot, causing the spear to snap. Continuing through the spear, Thargol's leg pounds the kobold hard in the chest of his padded armour, sending him reeling back into a bush. Crash! Although still living (just), the kobold decided not to even bother. ((So, was that a lethal or non-lethal attack?)) "Rahg grr-rah!" Gaariss congratulates.
Another kobold, meanwhile, notices the distress his/her comrade is in, and attacks Jeff by throwing his/her spear. [roll0] [roll1] "Rarooo!" howls Jeff, as the spear stabs into his shoulder. He growls viciously and prepares to lunge at the closest enemy, leaving the kobold in front of him very nervous.

One of the kobolds- a relation of some sort to the one who was kicked -rushes over to his brother/sister/cousin/nephew/uncle/aunt and tries to administer healing and a check on how wounded he/she is [roll2].
Another kobold- who is also a relation (it is very common for a kobold to have at least fifty close relations and two-hundred distant ones) -rushes at Thargol, spear brandished. [roll3] [roll4]
Disgusted by the selfish action of breaking from the group, another kobold throws his javelin at Thargol, not even bothering to avoid hitting the kobold in melee. [roll5] [roll6] [roll7] (one to fifty means the attack will be fired at the kobold. fifty-one to one-hundred means the attack is aimed at Thargol)

Two other kobolds fire at the party. [roll10] [roll11]

With a ferocious roar he soaked up the tremor as his weapon pushed through the Kobold. "I will not die today!" He bellowed. "I will not die! Scream and burn in Baator you filthy dirt-grubber! Die! Mexanis' back suddenly alights with fiery pain. A foot-and-a-half long javelin sticks out from the Wizard's back-- luckily the injury was not critical --. A second attack comes from Mexanis front. It misses, Mexanis having kneeled from pain. (1 point of damage to Mexanis)
A javelin zaps past Arianelle's head.
Krey ducks into the foliage, pursued by two javelins. He stands up again unharmed.
A javelin flies toward Thargol. A strong wind causes it to fall five feet short, into the pit. "Yreip!" yelps Gaariss.

Krey dashes toward a kobold only a few feet away from Arianelle. He clasps his right hand, his knuckles whitening. A red glow escapes his fingers. He opens his hand, flames raise strongly from it at the taste of forest air. The gnome aims at the kobold before him, and throws. "Arianelle!" Krey shouts. "Get away from there!" [roll18] [roll19] The fire misses the kobold. The foliage it stands in, however, is set alight. The blast of flame knocks the kobold to the ground. Still alive, but barely conscious, the kobold tries to crawl away from the inferno, itself still ablaze.
The fire spreads quickly through the unresistant bushes, kobolds doing their best to get away.

Thank the light, it worked... Feeling the fire at her heels, Arianelle steps out of the flammable bushes, towards the unconscious half-orc. "Light, make him whole!" A dim glow gathers around her right hand as she reaches for Thargol, then vanishes as she touches her fingertips to his shoulder.

She turns away immediately, with a last shout for the monk's hopefully reviving mind. "Get up and move! These bushes are burning!" Grabbing the slashed and bleeding kobold, she yanks him/her from under the endangered greenery and slings the creature over her sickle arm.

5-foot step along the side of the pit, to the non-shrubbery space, cast CLW on Thargol [roll0], pick up the kobold again. If the kobold and whatever it's still got on it weighs more than 44lb, Arianelle is heavily loaded and loses a point of AC.

Also, I'm claiming dodge against the nearest non-fleeing kobold in the north bushes.

I think that would be Create Fire. Seems the most relevant druidic ability.

Yeah, but all I had prepared today was Detect Poison, Purify Food and Drink, and Shillelagh (used) I'm just gonna say it's my gnomish Presto power (that has a Fire Finger thing) and leave it at that. On a related note, methinks Krey's gonna be kicking himself for starting a forest fire. On an even more related note, what're the rules for putting out a fire without water or some such thing?

As the last kobolds vanish, and no more javelins fly out of the bushes, Arianelle feels the adrenaline begin to fade, and incidentally the stubby javelins still jammed in her shoulder and side. The kobold blood leaking from her burden and dripping off her right elbow reminds her of work to be done. Not done. Can't stop now.

Scanning the battlefield, she sees the gnome's huge hound obviously standing over something. Still carrying the kobold, she jogs over. "You, dog!...Jeff! Get away from that! Go to Krey!" She settles her kobold on the ground, close enough that she can reach the dog, and begins binding its wound.

"You're smart enough not to get killed, so lets see what everyone else does before we make ourselves scare from all those nasty little bolts. It hurts when you're shot, but bolts are sissies compared to javelins." His humorless smirk showed more teeth than it should have.

That said, she waits to see what the others actually do.

Moments later she blinks, and mutters under her breath. "Was that it? It was different before. But I'm awake this time...Doesn't matter, no choices. Can't all run anyway... At them, before they can shoot!"

She charges across the open space toward the kobolds, sickle in hand.

The kobold Arianelle attacks lifts its crossbow to shield itself from the oncoming blow. The sickle stabs into the weapon, cutting the catch which holds the bolt. Twang! A kobold steps back hurriedly to avoid the misfire. The crossbow, after its modification, looks more suited to be a club.
The horse Mexanis sees, seems to be a perfectly ordinary horse, besides the fact it's white. The only strange thing, is that it's mane is slightly golden and-- glowing... The horse's two shiny eyes look at Mexanis invitingly. "Neigh!" it says, in a somehow nicer way then horses usually sound.
The white kobold stops hissing to turn to Thargol, crossbow aimed perfectly at his head. The half-orc is still ten feet away as the white kobold aims. Click, the trigger is pulled back...... but the bolt stays where it is. The white kobold looks at its crossbow confused, trying to see if the bolt had disappeared without seeing its flight. As it does this, WHAM! The white kobold slides backwards from the force of the blow. It sways a few times, then, with his hand to the spear on its back, its teeth grit and a glare of utter fury -- falls to the ground...

The other kobolds stare in shock at their fallen leader, as well as the monk that felled it. One reptilian shakes off the confusion, and aims its crossbow up at Arianelle. "Rauf, rauf!"
'Wha-?' was the most likely thoughts of that kobold before the great monster leapt upon him. It was Jeff. The creature he savages would not be getting up any time soon.

A wind feeds the flames into a sudden inferno, absorbing more bushes.

"That's a nice horse." He looked more than a little edgy. "Let's not sully Moradin's favor with blood, can you talk them out of this?" Inches closer to the horse he'd be able to step behind it if someone tried shooting at him. That was what it wanted, after all. "At worst they'll eat him instead of us." He glanced at the horse and shimmied closer to Mexanis. He wasn't keen on following everyone into a crossfire and getting his innards on display before their message got where it was supposed to go.

In the distance, Gaariss challenges the other group of kobolds, alone. The lizardlings look to be snickering as they reload their crossbows. Twang! A flurry of bolts fly at the gnoll and blurring speed. The ranger sidesteps, just as quickly as the oncoming projectiles, but several kobold had shot late and anticipated this. A second flock of bolts fly at the gnoll. Unable to dodge, he brings out his over-sized battleaxe and handaxe, shielding himself best he can. Chink, chang, klunk! All but one of the bolts deflect off his axes, and the one that hit barely gets through the chainshirt Gaariss wears.
Grinning largely at the frightened kobolds, Gaariss charges headlong into them. He decapitates one and severs another in half, vertically.

The fight continues.....

One cowardly dwarf started to sneak out from behind the trees and walk toward all the ruckus with no care for his well-being, fingers haunched like claws ready to rend flesh and tear at screaming kobolds so they cried for mercy.

"I am the demon of Moradin!" He growled over the fire. "I'll spill your guts from your skulls and use them as flagons of ale for my friends who have stone bones to sate their thirst for dragon scales on!" He raised his arms for effect. "And blood suckled their beards that spilled down their gore spattered bodies which where bulging with Dwarf mighty muscles and horrid killing breath so the minute little dragon's kin screamed and begged for mercy but got none unless they run!" His wild eyes and snarling lips could only help, especially when his monologue wasn't far off from how he looked.

The kobolds ignore the dwarf's foreign ravings. Anger -- unquenchable dark lust for revenge builds up in the reptilians. The outsiders injured and killed their comrades, were surviving with only injuries and, defeated their leader. "Rkksshiiyyaassss!" they cry. Let them scream as the Nine Hells! They drop their un-working crossbows, draw their spears, and charge while screaming something in Draconic.

Arinelle slices at the spear as it comes at her. Unfortunately, her hand-- soaked with sweat --lets slip her sickle, and the spear continues on with the weapon attached to its shaft. Luckily, the sickle unbalances the spear's thrust, but still the cleric's cheek, ear and nose are badly torn. She smells an overpowering scent of blood, coming from her own half-gone nose. [1 point of damage. You are unable to smell until healed. Your nose can be completely fixed only through magic healing.]
Thargol is shocked by the sudden attack. He gets into combat stance and snatches at the first oncoming spear. He misses.... The small shaft continues on through the half-orc's hand and meets his shoulder deeply. Shouting in agonizing pain, Thargol forgets the second attacker... Spliishotch, the spear stuck out through the monk's back, having begun from his chest. The kobolds remove their spears quickly, leaving Thargol to writhe in his agony. [8 points of damage, status of dying: -3 HP. Unable to use right hand without magical or longterm healing.]
Jeff's ears prick up. He jumps barely in time to avoid the kobold attacking his rear.

The fire spreads more slowly then previously.

He takes advantage of the kobold's indecisiveness and comes upon it. [roll0] [roll1]
As he jumps, the kobold swings around and hits him in the side of the head with its spear. Jeff misses, and pauses a moment to shake off the blow.
The kobold turns quickly again to try and strike Arianelle, but it was still off balance from its defence.

The cleric successfully heals Thargol. For him, the world snaps back out of the darkness that surrounded him. Stars and colours dance over his vision, the pain in his lungs surging through him like a burning disease. When the healing finished, all this went away, besides a strange tingling feeling pulsing through his body. Although the wounds through his hand and chest had been healed, blood still soaked his garment beyond recognition of its original colour.

Gauli-- his madness snapped out of him briefly --charges at the kobold between Jeff and Arianelle, axe swinging. [roll0] [roll1] (Critical Miss)
The kobold swings around again, hoping to catch the dwarf on the neck -- it misses... losing the arm that held the spear. The kobold steps back, chirping horrifically with its shock and pain. It stumbles, and continues writhe as it lies there near dead.
Gauli, his warrior instincts awoken by the kobold's blood, lifts up his axe and yells at the top of his lungs. You all know enough of dwarven to recognize it as a victory shout.

Arianelle watches with dull puzzlement as the last kobolds standing stab themselves to death. Turning away from the gruesomely removed opposition, she stoops to bind up the severed limb of the kobold Gauli just cut down. Without looking up, she remarks tonelessly "Someone should check on Gaariss." Is anyone left to look? It's by the Light's mercy...at least...that any of us are even alive.

Glazed eyes are the least of his troubles he can't even see the bodies, really. His axe was already clean. Blood wafted from his clothes. He put his gear back together and sat down quietly in the shadow of a tree.

In the distance where Gaariss was fighting the kobolds, you see the gnoll doing some odd victory dance. He lifts up a kobold corpse in smells it. After a moment's consideration he takes a bite out of its arm. Chewing and concentrating hard, he gives an expression that shows the bite was not very satisfactory. The gnoll picks up several more kobolds and walks over to where most of the party are gathered. He then brings some firewood out of his bag, brings one of the sticks over to the forest fire, ignites it on a burning bush, and walks back to where the rest of the firewood is. Placing it on the other logs, he brings out a spit, planning to put one of the kobolds on it.

With the battle over, Krey moves around the now quiet battlefield. He sighs as he sees the still-burning fire, and understanding that it'll not spread to much else, being contained in the bushes, he still quenches one of the salvageable bushes with his last waterskin. He then eats a piece of meat offered to him by Gaariss without really looking at what he's eating. He responds with a vague cough when he realizes it's kobold meat, then shrugs and has a bit more "Mustn't waste, I suppose." He mutters. He then stands up. "Hey, one of you had a spade, right? "Who knows how this scene will affect our talks with the orcs?" he muttes, almost inaudibly, to himself. He silently shuffles over to the body of the White Kobold, the obvious leader of the group.
