[3.5] Monster Help - Chimeric Manticore

Hey all.

I was wanting to have a Manticore with the Chimeric template (MM2).

However, the resultant creature would be 9HD and CR 9. I can't help that this would be woefully underwhelming as a CR9 monster.

Any thoughts?

Why don't add other inherited templates that would increase the HD/CR of the manticore up to 8 before applying the chimeric template? For example a draconic multi headed manticore that then gains the chimeric template has the same CR and HD but is a more respectable monster. You can mix and match the templates gained before that happens so it is closer to what you intend.

Yeah, that's true. suppose I could add templates until I get to CR 8, then apply Chimeric.

You could also do some tweaks with the Mantimera from Shining South, which is pretty much a chimeric manticore, but it's only CR 8 at 9HD.
