Halfling with mounted combatant riding on the shoulder of medium sized party member that in turn rides on the party moon Druids large sized animal form! By raw it should be perfectly legal right? xD

I think rules for mounts require a place to sit and one size category larger - so it ought to work.

It would work more elegantly to have both the small and medium person ride the large person.

True but would look more hilarious with the halfling on the shoulders on the bigger party member, like some weird tower of pc's. :)

Give the halfling a familiar that rides on his head.

Sounds like a legit combat strategy for sure! Imagine the fear and confusion it would cause among the enemy ranks! Add wizard giant poly riding a ancient gold dragon the party has befriended to the mix for maximum goof!

Then put a Bard who took Find Steed atop the stack, have him cast Cone of Cold and claim that he gets one Cone per mount, and it's mounts all the way down.

It's actually just as legit as the original argument was

It would have to be a 100' deep pit, otherwise the top character would still be above the top of the pit.

Reverse Gravity on the Tower O'Player Characters would be hilarious.

Your logic is sound. I concur.

Enemy 1: I attack the dragon on the bottom with this OP thingamawhatsit attack. It's the size of a barn, it probably can't make that DEX save. I deal...2796 damage!
Polymorphed Wizard: I use Mounted Combatant to shift the damage from my mount to myself!
Friendly Dragon: Thanks, wiz-bro! My DEX save is terrible.
Wild Shaped Druid: Oh no, you don't! I'm also using Mounted Combatant, so there!
Human Fighter: I'm the tank here, I'm taking the damage!
Halfling Ranger: Evasion...bitch.

Enemy 1: I attack the thing on the bottom with this OP AOE thingamawhosit. I can't really miss, it's the size of a barn. I deal...27946 damage!

This has no business being both so ridiculous, but so useful and at the same time so easy to adjudicate, but so necessary to veto...

Doesn't mounted combatant only work on attacks? As in, things that require an attack roll?

It's entirely possible. I didn't check the book before making that post. Yep. Fixed the post to make more sense.

Defense against AoEs would be a weakness of this totem-pole, as the whole thing occupies the bottom creature's space.
