Hope Valley Medical Center, Kingswell City, USA

It is 10:37 AM, but the morning has been chaos at the Hope Valley Medical Center. Ambulances having mutated patients rushed to the emergency room before driving off, probably to get more.
News vans are there as well, with news reporters, cameramen, and photographers at the scene.
Even the police are there, setting a perimeter around the hospital to keep out any bystanders.

Nina

It had felt like her whole body was on fire. That comet had passed overhead, then suddenly her skin had started to crawl. Then it itched. The sight of her own flesh suddenly rippling, turning impossible colors, becoming scaly then slimy then something else all together, that was something she would never forget. Then the pain hit. There weren't words to properly describe that sort of pain. Even the most sadistic torturer had never managed to inflict that sort of agony. Trying to scream, but only gasping, she had crawled (occasionally with extra limbs, she later realized), to her bag.

911. The operator asking where she was, what was happening. No response. Blackness. Lights. Inside of an ambulance. More screaming, not hers. Blackness again.

Nina bolts upright, jerking the monitors connected to her. Wait, what? She looks around. Lots of people, lots of medical personnel running around. Ok, hospital. Probably the emergency room. She looks at her skin. Ok, not changing colors anymore. And no pain. Guess thats good. Wait, what if I'm dead? No, this would be a seriously terrible afterlife. Not going to dwell on the possibility.

Noticing that Nina was awake, one of the doctors rushed over. "Miss . . . Mayer? You're at Hope Valley Medical Center. There was an accident, we think. We're not sure what happened, but we're looking into it. We need to ask you some questions."

"Yeah, sure, go ahead." The doctor cycles through a litany of undoubtedly important questions, Nina giving perfunctory answers to each.

"Umm, one more thing. We tried to give you something for any possible pain. When I say tried, I mean it. We couldn't get a needle in."

"Seriously? You people couldn't find a vein?"

"No, I mean. . . " He holds up a bent needle. "The needles wouldn't go in."

Suzu woke up on the couch, staring up at the ceiling. He smiles. He didn't have any performances scheduled today, so today was going to be a pretty relaxed day. He walks over to the kitchen, grabs a box of Pop Tarts, and pulls out two as he flips on the TV. The local news started playing as Suzu sits on the couch to eat his nutritionally inadvisable breakfast.

"...is unknown. So far the mutations seem to have no consistent features, ranging from minor cosmetic changes to-WHOA!"

A man catching on fire suddenly interrupted the newscast. Suzu watches in shock. Was this some kind of network prank?

"What in the world?" Suzu wonders to no one in particular. He gets up, finishing off the first tart as he walks over to the kitchen and pulls a deck of cards out of his pocket. Taking out the cards and sticking the second tart in his mouth, Suzu cascades the cards from one hand to the other. A few cards drop from his hands.

"Ah mou!" Suzu exclaims, bending over to pick up the cards. Suddenly, the cards jump into his hand as he starts to reach for them. Suzu froze, staring at the cards. He looks them over, finding that there were no wires attached to them. He must not be fully awake if he couldn't remember picking up some cards! But, to satisfy that niggly curiosity in the back of his head, he drops one of the cards on the floor. Reaching towards them, the card jumps into his hand. He drops it, reaching down to grab it before it hits the ground. The card ignored gravity and went up to him. Suzu repeated this a few more times; card up, card down, card up, card down, card up. It was like a yoyo, except there was a card instead of a ball and no string to be seen. Suzu looks back at the TV.

"Did I get mutated too?" Suzu asked, "No, that can't be! All I did last night was buy some origami paper, saw this cool meteor, came here, and went straight to sleep. Where would I have been mutated?"

Suzu reaches towards the shopping bag full of origami paper, willing it to come to him. The packets of paper came whizzing towards him, abandoning their plastic container. Suzu holds out his hand in a stop sign, and the papers floats in midair. Reaching out with his left hand, Suzu grabs one of the packets, dropping his right hand to let the others fall. He takes out a sheet of paper, setting it on the counter. Reaching out with his hands, Suzu goes through the familiar motions of folding a paper crane, only this time he tries to direct it at the paper on the counter. After a while, the paper comes out as a paper crane. Not folded as well as it would be normally, but it was a start. Suzu reached out towards the crane, willing it to rise. The crane flaps it's wings, soaring into the air. The crane flies elegantly, it's various parts adjusting along with it's wings as it alights on Suzu's shoulder. It digs into Suzu's shirt with it's nubby base, looking at Suzu with curiosity.

"Okaaaaayyyyy," Suzu says, looking at the crane with equal parts wonder and fear, "I need answers. Now!"

Suzu brushes the paper crane off his shoulder, running off to grab his bag. Having secured it, he turns off the TV as he runs out the door, checking his iPhone for the fastest walking route to Hope Valley Medical Center.

Peter yawned. He still wasn't really sure what was going on. He'd woken up here this morning and they'd told him some things. Didn't really remember it, but apparently they'd found him last night and had to bring him in for treatment. He still didn't get what for - he'd been feeling great all day. Last he remembered, he'd been driving home from his local store's weekly Warmage tournament when he'd been looking at a traffic light, yelling at it to go green. It did, before he'd even finished his sentence. The thought of green lights lingered on his mind as he moved to the next intersection, where once again the light was magically green. Only, so was the light on the road perpendicular to his.

Not that he noticed. He'd driven right into the intersection when a blaring horn took his attention, forcing him to look out his window and see the oncoming wave of cars just seconds away from colliding with him. He'd screamed, instinctively pushing out a hand as if to stop them. Which he did. The fastest of the lot snapped to a stop just before touching him, as if it had crashed into some sort of invisible wall. Same for the one next to it, forcing all of the vehicles behind him to rear end each other. Foot still on the pedal and mouth still screaming, Peter drove on from this massacre before even seeing it come to fruition. In the chaos his mind started running wild, and so did the world around him. He imagined the police coming after him, and suddenly there was an innumerable platoon of squad cars behind him. He wished they weren't there, and they disappeared again. So focused was he on this phenomenal string of events that he failed to keep his eyes on the road ahead, veering off his originally planned course and into the way of something big, hard, and apparently stronger than a moving car.

That was all he remembered, and it seemed like he'd been brought straight here from there. Still had his clothes, actually. They'd taken his phone, wallet, and cards. Well, taken was a bit strong. They were all on the bedside table next to where he was lying. They hadn't shared their wi-fi password, though. That was their most heinous infraction for sure. Overrun with boredom now, he reached out from under the covers and grabbed his deck, casually shuffling it before putting it back down in an easier to reach spot. His fingers deftly separated the first four cards from the rest, a most practiced manoeuvre, before lifting them up to see. This deck was called Archmage's Spellbook - very few Reinforcements, but a whole lot of powerful Resource cards.

Inspecting what he had now, he noted the Archmage card in his hand. This would have been a good starting hand if he had an opponent. He plucked that card from the other three, laying it down on the table like he was playing it.

"I won the toss, so I'll open by Reinforcing with Arch..."

A blast of purple and blue energy exploding from the card stopped him from finishing his sentence as he rolled over in the bed, shielding himself from whatever explosive he had set off. The disturbance went for only a brief second before the room was almost eerily silent again. Cautiously opening his eyes, Peter looked back over his shoulder to see what he could possibly have done. There, hovering in the space between his bed and the door, was the Archmage. The gamer stared at his card in disbelief; dark purple robe lined with blue runes, magical quarterstaff with crystal implant on one end, flying in a cross-legged meditative position. A human-size version of the man on his card was there, in the room, staring at him.

"...Mage?" He shook his head in disbelief and looked around for some sort of 'Help' button, jabbing at it if he could find it.

"Am I hallucinating?"

"Hey, Yanni."

Sarah Rover stepped into Yannike Adagio's room with an oddly sheepish look on her face. She hung her jacket on the hook, placed the box of Heroes on the bedside table gingerly and then just stood there for a second, looking down at her sleeping friend. It was weird to see Yannie with her eyes closed, and her hair splayed out on the pillow like that. Sarah's mental image of her was always with both eyes open and gleaming, her ponytail in the wind as she sprinted down the pitch. It gave Sarah a chill to think of her like this. Still, the young footballer managed a smile for her friend as she sat down in the seat opposite her. "I'm not sure how long I'll be able to stay. I snuck in while the nurse was dealing with a reporter."

Pulling the bag off of her back, Sarah opened it with a stronger smile, withdrawing a series of envelopes. Cards for Yannike. She placed them in a slightly messy pile on the poor girl's bedside table, next to the glanced around the room. It was... strangely impersonal. A TV across from the bed, a small bag beside the bedside table. There were posters on the walls, but they must've been put there by the Hope Valley staff. Cartoon heroes, magical girls and grinning hospital mascots were the order of the day. She could make out a Galaxy Girls drawing on the far wall, and a Magical Knight Einzheart screenshot beside the TV, with the title character grinning and holding her sword high, ready to take on the world. There was a faded spread of the Guardian League, all grinning above a 'get well soon' caption: that must've been there for decades. Shouldn't Yanni have had more of her own stuff in here by now?

Guess the Adagios couldn't get past the press outside. Or had work or something. Frowning, Sarah reached into her bag a second time, taking out a battered copy of New Revolution and putting it down atop the cards. Yannie needed something in here apart from old posters and chocolate. Withdrawing her phone from her pocket, Sarah swiped the screen to bring up the series of best wishes the team'd sent for her, holding it towards the bed and scrolling down as though the sight would wake her friend up. "Everyone sends their love. You were the only one in our class who got hit by this... whatever it is. School's out for the day though. People are betting on if you've turned into a monster or a superhero."

The young Brit laughed awkwardly at that, glancing down at her backpack for just a moment. She'd packed... it for the first time when going out. She probably wouldn't need it, but she ought to play it safe, right? Just in case something bad happened with all the craziness and the comet powers and everything? The whole idea was still pretty scary though. She should've practiced more last night, should've made sure of what she could do now...

No. Don't think about that right now. Yanni's what's important.

Smiling gently at her friend, Sarah Rover just sat there for a while. She could deal with the outside world later. Now was time to be with a fallen friend, on the hope that they'd get better soon. Not many people were going to be able to get into the hospital with the place in this state. Yannike should have someone with her when she came round, so that's what Sarah was going to try and be. No matter what.

"We're gonna have to put her through a CT scan." Another doctor said, making his colleagues quickly voice in their agreements before they hurriedly carry you off on a stretcher to the CT scan.

Along the way, you see a patient in one bed with finger and toe nails growing into long claws, another patient with short horns growing out of his forehead is being carried away in a stretcher, and you can hear a man screaming at the top of his lungs with pain and agony. That is just a couple out of the many patients you pass by before making it to the CT scan.

Suzu Itaboshi

When you arrive at the Hope Valley Medical Center, you can see the police doing their best to block a mob of people from crossing the barricade the police made, some of them with their iPhones out taking pictures and videos of the patients carried into the emergency room.

Sarah Rover

Yannike Adagio gives off a gentle moan as she slightly tilts her head to the right.

Outside her room, you can hear the chaos going on out there. Medical staff dashing around, stretchers rolling around, cries and screams of pain and agony from the patients the hospital is receiving. Seems like they're too busy to check in on Yannike.

Peter

Finally finding and pushing the help button, a male nurse in blue scrubs arrives in half a minute.
"Um, sir?" The nurse says to the archmage in the room.
"You can't be in here."
Unsure of how to handle the situation by himself, he pokes his head out into the hallway.
"Can I somebody please call security?"

Victor zoomed that day. For the longest time he'd been keeping the comet's speed a secret. It wasn't too hard - he just had to be really careful. But now was the chaos. At first, no one would believe that the world had changed in an instant. But Victor knew.

Victor knew what would happen before anyone else did.

He raced through the streets, a blinding streak of light blazing it's way across the city to help those affected by the comet. After having spent all night in observations, the young man was now ready to face this Brave New World head on. He knew what was going to happen where - he'd seen the news in the past when this happened before. Back when he had thought it was a hoax - something to be ignored. Before the veil or normality was shattered forever. Laughing, the speedster blured at nigh-imaginable, barely noticed by the populace as he rushed the afflicted to the hospitals where their strange new physiologies required medical attention. The orderlies and staff bringing in these strange new mutated people were astounded to find that people were appearing in the various emergency rooms without any understanding of how they got there - merely appearing at the hospitals in a blink of an eye.

A scream from above. A man in his early thirties had fallen from a twelve story building, his arms suddenly growing to three times their normal size, tearing free of his suit. The man's entire body had begun growing coarse grey fur everywhere, and his feet had grown prehensile, bursting out of his Italian leather shoes. In shock and fear, the man let out his beastly howl while falling to certain doom.

"I gotcha..." the man heard as he fell, and light erupted in a flash in his eyes as he suddenly found himself with both feet on solid ground, half a mile away right inside a hospital emergency room, to the sudden surprise of the doctors within. But then again, people had been appearing like this for the last seven and a half minutes, and the doctors could only try and keep up.

A couple kids were in the way of an oncoming car. An elderly woman trapped under some rubble from a nearby gas explosion. A cat who had gotten stuck in a tree.

In a blur, Victor Northland saved them all, and zoomed away to deal with the crisis to the city as best he could.

Nina lays back resignedly. What the hell was happening around here? Was she going to start growing horns and claws too? She looks at her hand . . . oh ****. Her nails had morphed into hard spikes of keratin. It hadn't hurt though. When did that happen? No, no, go away!

And they did, just melding back into her body.

She catches one the nurses staring at her, eyes wide in horror. "I'm, uh, not really sure whats happening here." The nurse simply continues to gape.

Nina is wheeled into the CT scan room. "Ok ma'm, we need you to lie very still for us." Nina complies. In fact, she notices, she lies as still as she ever had in her life. She had always been told that she was too energetic, that she needed to slow down. She was almost always fidgeting, and when she wasn't, she nearly vibrated with energy. Now though, she willed herself to be still, and she was.

It takes a while, but the results come back. The same doctor from before, Dr. Brown. "Miss Mayer, I have some good news. We can't find anything wrong with you. Really, you seem to be in perfect health. Frankly, we've never seen anything like it. You have no scar tissue, no problematic fat deposits, anything. We even got your medical records. You broke your arm when you were 17. There is absolutely no evidence of it. Something is happening to people around here, but you seem to have come out of it with a remarkable gift."

Sarah blinked at Yannike's return to consciousness. She'd kinda expected her to be out for the count for a while, perhaps most of the day. But... well, Sarah hadn't fallen asleep. No reason anyone else would've fallen into a coma really. The young Brit rose from the chair, tilting her head and kneeling to try and meet her friend's gaze. "Yannie?"

There's nothing but concentration on Rover's face for a while, as she tries to look for any signs of waking from her friend. Soon enough though, her impatience gets the better of her. "It's me. Sarah. How..." The footballer glanced towards the door with a look of irritation. The doctors were too busy for her to bother at the moment. And you shouldn't leave someone alone in a hospital. They'd come in and check on Yannike soon, right? Sarah turned back to her fallen friend, trying her hardest to smile. "How are you doing?"

Suzu looks over the scene before him. It looked like total chaos, and he didn't want to get involved in that. However, he wants to know what was going on. He leans against a nearby tree, contemplating what to do. He suddenly remembers one of Mamoru-sama's signature tricks, the Kimyona Kamen Tejina. Mamoru-sama would call up a volunteer, who would choose five cards from a deck that Mamoru-sama would provide. Mamoru-sama would look away while the volunteer chose the cards for themselves. The volunteer would be told to hold the cards against their chest so the faces couldn't be seen. Then, Mamoru-sama would pull out his mysterious Kimyona Kamen, a white mask that supposedly gave him access to other people's minds. He'd use a calligraphy brush to draw on the mask and make it look like the volunteer's face. Then he'd put it on, accessing the volunteer's mind and identifying the cards they held.

The sudden flashback gives Suzu an idea. He reaches into his bag and pulls out a notebook. Tearing out pages and folding them into cranes, he soon has one dozen paper cranes. He motions them upwards, causing them to perch on his outstretched arms. They look at him with curiosity, a few of them preening their paper wings. Suzu lifts another sheet of paper to his face, molding it into the shape of a crane mask. He puts it on his face, suddenly seeing through the eyes of his cranes. He lays down against the tree as he lets the cranes fly away. They fly towards the hospital, splitting up so as to be inconspicuous. The cranes fly into the hospital through various entrances, staying away from the rushing doctors as the cranes look around and see what is going on.

You come across a traffic jam caused by a car in the center of that intersection, with its driver sweating and heavily breathing. By the looks of it, he looks like he's in a lot of pain.
However, you have a feeling that there is something to remember.

Nina

"However," Another one of the doctors, Dr. Nicholas intervenes.
"The bad news is we don't know what is happening to you. Syringes cannot go through your skin, you've been growing claws, and so far we don't have any results to explain how or why."

Peter

After a moment of waiting, two security officers arrive at the door, both having surprised looks on their faces when they see the floating archmage.
"Sir.... You cannot be in here." One of the security officers tell the archmage.
"You have to come with us now." The other said as he cautiously and slowly approached the archmage.

Sarah

Your friend doesn't answer as she lays peacefully in bed, still breathing. But for a moment, you could've sworn that Yannie gave you a small smile in response.

Suzu

Through the paper cranes you sent, you see a wide variety of things inside the hospital: medical staff carrying a ridiculously large and hairy man into an examination room. A floating wizard in a room with a guy with glasses in bed, a nurse and two security guards. A team of doctors in a CT Scan room telling a young lady about her test results. A teenage girl right by her bedridden friend, with the room decorated with posters.

"Wait, wait, chill out!" Peter yelled as his Archmage turned, unfurling his legs and standing down on the floor to face the security staff.

"He's...my card." He reached over and grabbed the Archmage card, picking it up and showing it off to the staff to compare. "My Warmage card. I put him down and he just came out of nowhere. I thought I was going crazy, that's why I called. Is he actually real?"

"I'm, uh, not quite sure what to make of it myself." She has an idea. "Grab a syringe, I think I have a solution."

Dr. Nicholas steps out of the room, coming back with what seemed like an unnecessarily large syringe. Nina holds up her hand, willing the claws back. Long hooks grew out of the end of her fingers, the doctors alternately scribbling notes and staring. Nina places a claw over the crook of her elbow and pulls. It barely even stung, but a cut opened up, bleeding as any cut would. "Ok, try it now."

Dr. Nicholas places the syringe in, but as the group watches, the cut closes. The skin sealed around the foreign object. Nicholas has to tug to get the needle out. "Fascinating."

"It'll probably take you guys a few days to analyze that, right? So, um, am I free to leave now? I'm kind of starving, and really craving some junk food."

That was when Sarah noticed the tiny origami crane flapping gently into the room. That interrupted Sarah's would be rest pretty quickly. The young footballer's gaze darted between Yanni and the Crane, eyes widening. Could... Yannike be doing that?

Finally, she rose to her feet. Sarah wasn't that tall, so she still had to look up towards the paper crane, trying to see what it was doing. Her fists were clenched on impulse, it was hard for the young football player to trust stuff this weird. Gently, she murmured "Hello?" towards the strange creature, wondering if it'd show any response.

The view of each paper crane is arranged on the inside of the crane mask like a security monitor before Suzu's eyes. The coloring is a little off; vision through the cranes had a filter that made it look like what they saw was painted on a woodblock print. Suzu guides the cranes with his thoughts; the ones that found interesting rooms perch in an out-of-the-way location to watch. The others he positions at points in the hospital where traffic was heavy, keeping themselves out of the way just like- someone saw one of them!

Taking direct control over the crane that was spotted, Suzu wondered what to do. The teenager seemed calm for someone who just saw a living paper crane, but things could get bad if he wasn't careful. He lands the crane on the TV, bowing it's head respectfully towards the teen. He couldn't speak through the crane, so he looks about the room for something to write with.

Sarah just blinks at the very polite seeming Crane, taking a step back to place herself between Yannike and the creature. Her eyes narrow a little as it lingers in the room, the young footballer studying it carefully. If it was something sinister it seemed... very flimsy, all things considered. She could probably just swat it down like a bug. Still, everything had been going crazy since the comet. Perhaps it was just the first part of a swarm though, or could breath cold fire at people or...

You're getting scared by an origami crane. Calm down.

She followed the creature's gaze as the crane shifted its long neck around the room, trying to work out what it was looking form. Sarah hummed to herself for a moment, before an idea struck her. With a grin she picked up her phone from the bedside table, swiping it back into readiness and presenting it to the paper bird. "Erm... can you use this to show me what you want? Do you understand it?" It was a long shot, but if the thing was smart enough, or controlled by a human somehow... perhaps they could use her phone to show her what they wanted.

His search for writing utensils turning up fruitless, Suzu is quite grateful for the phone being provided. Sarah followed the crane's slow attempts at typing closely, still holding onto the phone to keep it steady for the strange visitor. Once it was done though, she blinked, the implications of the situation sinking in. "You got turned into a small paper crane?"

Even for the standards of today, that seemed bizzare. Believable, but still bizzare. Leaning back in the chair, the dark haired Brit tried to meet the crane's gaze. "Everyone's saying it's the comet that passed overhead last night. Maybe the people who looked at it were affected or something?" Sarah shrugged; it seemed likely. She could remember that moment, remembered feeling different afterwards. Still, she couldn't know. The young footballer looked over to Yannike with a smile, wondering if she'd been watching the comet too, before turning back towards the door, gesturing at it for the crane's benefit. "Some of the effects are obvious, some of 'em aren't. And not everyone's bodies coped well with the change. The doctors in here are really busy, and this is just the kids ward. Which is why the police have the hospital sealed off I guess."

Sarah shook her head, smile having faded. "It's not always obvious. Some people look strange and mutated. Others just got knocked out or started thrashing about in pain. I guess you just got through it without any problems at all. You can't always tell who got changed just by looking at them."

She gestured down to Yannike, laying there on the bed. Frowning, the young footballer flicked experimentally at the papers that lay on the wall beside her friend. Just confirming the story she'd already heard. She kept speaking to the Crane as she read the report over. "Yannie fell unconscious right after the comet passed. She didn't have any sort of illness, so it's assumed she reacted to the whatever, so they brought her in to be safe. I guess." Sarah was silent for a few seconds before turning back to the Crane, still looking somber. "I'm sorry, I can't help you. I'm not a doctor. I'm just here to be with my friend. I don't think even the doctors have figured out what's going on really. They're just trying to keep calm while they work it out. Like me when I've got coursework due."

Racing through the streets, the costumed speedster rushed to the rescue, dashing in like a blur to help the people trapped in their cars by the jam. Victor could see the car that caused the jam - a man sat at the wheel, sweating profusely, huffing and puffing, appearing to be in great pain. Well, that wasn't good, the man seemed to need immediate medical attention. Whatever was going on, it felt familiar, though. It almost drew him to a pause as he tried to remember what he could about the last time he'd lived through this day. If only he'd been paying more attention!

Nevertheless, Victor raced to the rescue, knowing fully well that the jam would cause problems for rescue workers, and that a man in need of medical attention deserved his attention too.

The paper crane takes off, leaving you and Yannike alone in the room.

The nurse and the security officers take a look at your card, then at the archmage, and back to the card.
Then the nurse bravely approaches the archmage and pokes him in the shoulder.
"Well, I can honestly say that you're not crazy, and that this..... Warmage card...... is real...."

Meanwhile, the two-way radios of the security officers turn on and they answer it quickly before putting the radios away.

"There's a situation going on at one of the hospital cubicles. We need you and your..... wizard... to stay here." One of them informs you before leaving the room quickly.

Nina

"Well, we'd like to keep you here so we can observe your condition. However, we cannot force you to stay. You have your rights as a patient." Dr. Brown says as Dr. Nicholas leaves with your blood sample.
"You can help yourself to the vending machines in the ER waiting room if you'd like...."

Dr. Brown is suddenly interrupted by a loud scream of anger and pain.

Suzu

Continuing your survey through the hospital, from seeing a patient with brown fur and a pair of tusks growing out of his face, to another with flaky skin scratching himself.

Coming upon a hospital curtain, through the opening you see nurses, doctors, and security trying to keep a man down on the hospital bed, who is thrashing around, screaming on the top of his lungs in pain and rage.

"IT HURTS!!!" The patient bellows.
"MAKE IT STOP!!!"

You remember a news story about a mutant who broke loose from the Hope Valley Medical Center and went on a rampage through Kingswell city. This rogue mutant, who the media called "Berserker", killed more than a hundred people in his path. Those people included civilians, police, and members of the armed forces. Berserker's rampage ended when a parking garage collapsed on him. But his body was never found.

Berserker was identified as Brenton S. Walker, a man with a history of violent crimes, and anger management issues.

You also remember that in the news story, the time that the rampage begins is in a couple of minutes!

It's a hospital. Lots of people screaming. Of course, it isn't every night people are screaming from being mutated or whatever this is. Nina bolts up from the bed and sprints down the the hall. She feels her legs change, and suddenly she is moving down the hall faster than she ever could before. Hell, she is moving faster than any human could, she realized. She comes to the source of the commotion, skidding into a wall.

Sarah chuckles as the crane flies away, falling back into her chair at Yannike's side and waving at the departing bird. Once the stranger had gone, the young Brit muttered to her friend with a faint grin. "Crazy, huh? The things that're happening right now?"

She looks out the window. Yannike's room is a fair distance from the hospital's front entrance, but even here Sarah can make out the media circus camped out, flocking around every incoming ambulance. A gout of silver-blue flame rises into the air, and Sarah sighs, looking back to Yannie with her smile fading. "I was telling the truth. It's mad out there. Mr. Paper Crane is probably not the weirdest guy in this hospital right now. All sorts of people got powers from the comet." She brings up her phone, and started to page through news stories, image after image of people going crazy while superhuman. Even if the powers weren't being traumatic... was that going to make it better? If everyone knew what you were, that you were different, changed by some strange alien thing...

Sarah frowned down at her friend. The idea of seeing Yannike like that was heartbreaking. The young Brit muttered, half to herself and half to Yannie. "I really hope you just hit your head or something. You shouldn't have to deal with... this."

Then suddenly, they are sent flying outside the curtain, the patient revealed as a bald man in his early twenties. His eyes are glowing bright red, and his teeth are tightly gnashing.
You see him rip off his restraints and climb out of bed, his rage having just begun.

As you get close to one of the hospital curtains, where the source of the screaming is coming from, you see nurses, doctors, and security guards fly out of the curtains and onto the floor. Then, something from behind the curtains grabs onto it and tears it off the roof, revealing a furious, bald man with glowing red eyes.

Peter sat up, struggling to believe his situation. Looking over at his deck, he drew another card, staring at it intently along with the rest of his hand. He felt power pulsing from it - flowing past his fingertips and through his veins, up through his body. He'd heard about all the mutations from doctors going by his room, but now he wasn't sure - had he been empowered, or was it just these cards? Why would his cards get super powers?

"Um, okay," he said to the guards. They could do what they wanted - he certainly had bigger things to worry about. He looked back to the nurse.

As powerful as your punch felt as it hit the man in the chest, it had no effect on him. It was like punching a wall made of titanium steel.

The man doesn't look hurt, but rather a bit angry and annoyed.

"You shouldn't have done that....." The rogue mutant growled.

Then suddenly he let out a loud scream of pain and rage as the red glow in his eyes became brighter. His scream was loud enough for the whole hospital to hear.

Suzu

You watch as the girl's punch, as powerful as it may have appeared when it hit, the bald man didn't react to it at all. He simply responded by saying something to her before suddenly letting out a roar of rage, loud enough that you can hear it from outside the hospital.

The crowd outside the hospital becomes quiet at first the moment the raging roar happened. As people asked what was going on, some of the police have the people leave the area while others go inside the Hope Valley Medical Center to investigate.

Peter

"Well, I cannot force you to stay, but I'd prefer you and your..... uh, wizard to stay here for your own safety in..."

A loud roar of rage from outside the room interrupts the nurse. By the sound of it, it seems to sound really close.

Sarah

You hear a loud roar of rage from outside the hospital room. Shortly after, a nurse comes into the room. By the look on her face, she was surprised to see you in the room.

"Wha... What are you doing here miss?" The nurse asks.
"We need to get you and your friend to a safer place. There's a rogue mutant on the loose! You need to get out of here now!"

Before you can say anything, the nurse pulls you out of the room as two more nurses go in to take Yannike. As the nurse guides you through the turning hallways and doors however, the both of you come upon an emergency exit that is blocked off by a large, stone statue. By the looks of it, it looks like it used to be a patient.

"There's no way we can make it past that thing! We're gonna have to find another way out." Said the nurse.
"We're gonna have to find another way." The nurse now starts guiding you to a new path, one that seems to lead towards where the raging roar originated from......

"Sorry, but I've got to check this out."

He grabbed up his deck of cards and shoved it in his pocket, holding his hand in the other...well, hand. Getting out of the bed, he ignored the staff member and moved towards the door, signalling for his Archmage to follow him. It seemed to deliberate for a moment, as if it was unsure of the situation as he was, but in the end it seemed to decide it didn't get to choose where its loyalty lied. It casually strolled over to the doorway with Peter, never for a moment betraying its unfazed wizardly flair. They peered out of the door together, into the hallway.

Sarah mutters to herself as she follows the nurse, glancing back swiftly at Yannike and the other two attendants. She should be intervening here, going all Lionheart, but they were watching. And they'd probably remember that kid who ran off. Begrudgingly, she stuck with her nurse, at least until they reached the emergency exit. The young Brit groaned at first, the situation starting to seem more dire, but then she started to smile a little as inspiration struck her. She called back to the nurse. "Wait! Hold on."

Reaching around the statue's torso, Sarah hefts the former patient upwards, onto her back. It's a hefty weight, but camping trips have left the young Brit accustomed to carrying a lode. A few quick steps later, she turns about, swiftly plunking the calcified onlooker back upon the ground out of the way of the exit. That done, she turns back to the nurse, gesturing in the opposite direction to the screaming. "Go get more people out! I'll check the other escape routes. We need to make sure that everyone has a safe path, right?"

Ok, sorry to rules lawyer, but 'weight of a stone person' is a classic D&D question, so I looked into this. In M&M 3E a character can carry a mass rank equal to their strength rank, and that's not a rolled thing. Sarah can carry 1,600lbs worth of stuff. (she's a pretty damn strong kid. :smallwink:) Now, with her powers, she could kick something away weighing up to 25 tons, but a human statue shouldn't be that heavy. Most of the estimates I got were under half of her total carry capacity, 550 in granite for a 200lbs person, varying somewhat depending on the person's weight and the type of rock.

You specified this statue as large, so it could be significantly heavier than that. However, unless he's more than three times human height/build, Sarah should be able to lift it, right? :smallsmile; Perks of playing a character with some physical strength rather than relying on a damage power. (Also, it'd take a minimum of Str 4 to lift it, so most people would be out of luck with this)

Anyway, if this works, Sarah will take off... to find the nearest unoccupied room so she can change into her Lionheart costume. Ideally an en-suite, so she can be sure of not being observed by a passing doctor. Hopefully Speed 3 can help with that? She's worried about her secret identity, and enough people saw her in Yannike's room that there's a risk of her being traced if she stayed in her civilian clothes. Mask and costume are important here.

In a flash, Victor Northland cleared the man stuck in the middle of the massive traffic jam at the intersection. Before the man knew it, he was being carried through the streets of Kingswell City towards the nearest hospital. The man was in need of medical attention, but that wasn't exactly the foremost thing on the speedster's mind. No, it was his rather sparse memory of these next few days. Well, at least he was now ready to face them head on. The hyperventilating man had reminded Victor of the terrible things that had happened last time he lived these days.

He wasn't going to make those same mistakes twice.

A blur of lightning, the man from the traffic jam found himself in the Emergency entrance of the nearest hospital, and then Victor was gone, racing to where he remembered from the old news bulletins that the rampage had begun. If he was fast enough... maybe he could stop the "Berserker" before the mutant destroyed half the city in his fear-driven frenzy of destruction.

As he could recall, the rampage had stretched across several city blocks, killed hundreds of people, and ended when a parking garage was dropped on the man... Victor couldn't let any of that happen. Not on his watch.

A blink of an eye later, Victor was at Hope Valley Medical Center, finding his memory had come to him only just in time. Well, by just in time, it meant right when that rampage was beginning, as the speedster could see the massive brute of man, that Walker had become, and the glowing red light from the mutant's eyes. That... was certainly not good. But at the speed that Victor was going, it might be possible for the speedster to drag the man out of the city limits - possibly out over open water - before anyone got hurt. But he'd have to move quickly... Brenton Walker was a killer, and the last time Victor had lived this day, people had died because of it.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. A sudden bout of illness left me in a bad state these last few days. Still not completely recovered, but I've managed to get better enough to get back to posting. Hopefully. Again, sorry about the sudden disappearance.

Having just blasted into the room, Victor had to remember to slow down enough to actually be visible. Which wasn't of much effort, surprisingly. Acceleration had gotten easier and easier over the weeks of practice, and while deceleration was always a little harder to do in the real world, whatever powers he had gained the night of the comet appeared to compensate for that. It was like the natural laws of physics no longer applied - he could accelerated to the speed of sound in less than a millisecond, and move faster that the eye could track motion. Not as fast as light, but with a speed able to beat the reaction-time of flies, a "Berserker" couldn't really keep up.

So, Victor slowed down. Enough that he could be seen - his voice could be heard - as he blurred, body vibrating rapidly as he grinned and faced down the bald-man with a history of violence and anger management issues who had gained the powers of a monster.

"Hi-ya big boy." the speedster grinned, voice blurred by rapid motion as the man in the red costume appeared to disappear and reappear around the power-mad man, taunting him. "How would you like to dance? Slow waltz? Flamenco? Or maybe you prefer ballet?"

Wham! In the blink of an eye, Victor landed a shotgun blast of whirling fists into the man's abdomen before he could even blink, then followed up with another blazing assault upon the man's jaw, trusting in velocity and kinetic motion to carry his punches through so his fists didn't shatter against the Berserker's super-tough skin. Any knockback from the blows would push Berserker back down a hallway Victor knew would lead right outside. The speedster knew he had to draw the man's attention away from civilians, and get Brenton Walker to make a mistake in charging Victor. If Walker could follow Victor out of the hospital and away from civilians... Victor had to hope that he was fast enough to drag this monster in his wake, and take him out to sea where the man couldn't hurt anybody.

Okay, so I think I'll Move-by action to rush up to Berserker and rapid-strike him, then move so Victor is between Berserker and the way out of the hospitals (pathway hopefully assured clear of civilians because high levels of quickness and speed). That way, when Berserker tries to rush Victor, he'll be heading for the way out.

"Hey!"

While the strange blur whirs around Berserker, a new figure has finally reached the doorway. A young woman, fists clenched and clad in what could only be a superhero costume. White shirt and shorts, with the design of a golden lion taking up half her torso. She wears a white domino mask, has her dark hair tied up in a pony-tail that seems to bob in a non-existent wind, and is looking into the room with a confident grin. For the first time ever, Lionheart is on the scene and ready for a fight.

That smarmy look of hers flickers a little as the young hero's eyes dart across the wreckage of the room, but somehow she still manages a confident snort and a grin as she turns to her opponent. "Heh. Ready to try someone who can hit back?" Not waiting for a reply from the colossus, Lionheart charges towards him, darting from side to side before landing a kick squarely in Berserker's torso. Her booted foot has the power some express trains could envy, it could have knocked a speeding truck off of the road.

So, since Nina delayed, and Berserker doesn't really have anything to react to... Sarah's turn!

[roll0] Power Attack. If successful, DC 27 toughness save to resist damage, and DC 22 strength check to resist knockback. Since that's not directly damaging, that shouldn't trigger immunity to physical damage AFAICT, which could give us a clue to this guy's powerset. Sarah'd aim to knock him through an exterior wall if possible, getting him out of the hospital would be worth it. If successful she'll use her remaining movement to follow. If there's no exterior wall here, she'll go for 'knock him into the biggest thing I can see'.

If the knockback's successful... going by the GMG knockback rules, Berserker has to make a second toughness save equal to the Toughness of the wall, and the wall needs to make a Toughness save against DC 27. Failure by 6+ for the wall means it breaks and Berserker falls through. 11+ would make a larger break, though I've never been sure how that works on walls.

I've got a few plans in mind for Sarah to potentially do energy damage, but that'll in part depend on the outcome of this post. Fighting Berserker outside will leave us with different options.

"Hold it?" The man laughs as he gets up.
"You can't hold me! I'm invincible!"

Amateur! Victor couldn't believe what had just happened right there. He should have seen it coming. But then again, there wasn't anything like this in his memory. Another "masked man"? And what the hell was this woman's idea of a costume? Plain white with a golden lion on it, and a domino mask? Victor had to give her props for being prepared... but why the hell would anyone carry around a domino mask on a day like this?

And why the hell'd she just butt in?

Victor Northland had to rethink everything to account for these new variables. For one, Berserker was far tougher than he had anticipated, and far stronger too. Plus, Walker had already gotten into the sense of invincibility that Victor was thinking of calling the "power-trip". Perhaps it was merely a sense of adrenaline coursing through the man's bloodstream that made him like this - he wasn't driven by rage so much as riding the high that came with it. A possible weakness? He couldn't say for sure.

Not when he had to focus on the fact that Walker was shrugging off bullets and coming back to slam the floor, sending a shockwave through the ground. Well, damn.

In an instant, Victor was racing up and off the ground, skipping off the walls like gravity was meaningless to him while plotting a better angle to take Berserker out of here.

"It's a lot like a game of Warmage, isn't it?"

"The opponent has a huge Fortification Reinforcement on the board. We have a Rapid Reinforcement, as well as some others, but we can't penetrate its Defence score. So we need a Removal card...

He drew another piece of cardboard from his pocket, glancing at it briefly before looking back to the fight, noticing all of a sudden that the Berzerker had been grabbed still by one of the other fighters' paper chains. He grinned.

"Or a Sabotage card, which we just played. Archmage, move in for the big guy with an Overcharge attack."

The Archmage nodded and looked back to its opponent, raising a hand glowing with arcane energy. It let the power blast from its hand as it silently mouthed the incantation, pure magic blasting across the hall and towards the immobilized enemy. With a sigh and a magical crackle, he then generated and blasted a second attack, this one just as powerful as the last but demanding much more effort, like he was using all of his energy. Finished, the mage floated down onto the float before yawning and disappearing in a flash of light. Such was the penalty of an Overcharge - the Reinforcement could gain the Rapid quality for one turn but was then discarded, having overextended itself and become exhausted.

"I'm going to follow up with Wizard Blade," Peter said, continuing to speak with incredibly calm as he removed one of his cards from his hand and threw it down on the floor in front of him, where it also dissipated. He did the manoeuvre with very practised fingers, but anybody with a keen eye would notice he actually threw down two cards; one of them with its backwards face pointing upwards, concealing its nature. The second disappeared with the first, and a purple sword of arcane energy crackled into existence in the gamer's other hand. In a real game of Warmage, using an offensive Equipment card on yourself was almost always a tactical blunder. This was not a real game of Warmage, however. Peter ran in himself, seeing through fear thanks to his excitement at the unique situation and attacked, counting on the magic of the weapon to fight for him as long as he made it clear who his target was.

Peter

The archmage's first blast struck Berserker in the chest, only making him cough. But the second blast send him to the ground. Berserker lays there, with smoke coming off of him, restrained in paper chains, and left with some bruises on his arms and his face. The sword of magic energy doesn't fail you, as before Berserker has a chance to see what is going on, or say a word, the Wizard Blade's strike was powerful enough to knock him out.

Now he lays on the floor, wrapped in paper chains, and unconscious.

"...Ha."

The Wizard Blade disappeared, giving Peter a free hand to adjust his glasses while his other went to put his cards away, returning them to the deck in his pocket which he went on to shuffle. He finally took a moment to look around, nodding at the others who had been up against the Berzerker before his eyes fell on the police.

"Kind of just jumped in there. Do any of you guys know who that actually was?"

The overloud brute of a mutant falls to the ground with a satisfying thud. The stranger in the domino mask glances between the paper-master and the card-mage, grinning at both. They'd done it. She sighed, leaning against the wall for a second as she murmured to herself. "He went down. Everyone's safe." Sarah'd been a little worried abut trying this, not sure if her powers and past experience would be enough to let her fight like a superhero. But they could! And she wasn't the only one. They'd all come together, helped keep the hospital safe. All those people; the stone guy, the nurse, Yannike...

The last makes the implacable footballer shudder. Yannie! Her friend was probably outside by now, and the doctors were probably busy trying to make sure everyone was out safely. The thought of Yannike alone in the mist of a half panicked crowd, still out cold, unable to respond to anything was enough to make a chill creep over Sarah's spine. With one final glance around the group, she hastily coughed out an "Excuse me!" before turning around and sprinting down a corridor.

Quick change and then I'll go check on her. I'm not needed here anymore.

Suzu lets go of the paper chain, allowing it to coil the rest of itself around the unconscious man. Then he stretches his arms out to either side as the paper armor peels off of him, each piece turning into a paper crane that flies around him. Then they fly off around the corner, retrieving Suzu's bag and dropping it off at his feet. Suzu picks it up, opens it, and the cranes land inside the bag. He then slings the bag back onto his shoulder, a calm smile on his face. The smile drops for a second after the woman with the lion shirt runs out of the room.

"Hazukashii?" he thinks to himself. Focusing on the situation at hand, Suzu turns to the guy with the cards.

"I do not," Suzu answers, "I know he was a patient here, probably after the mutation outburst."

Uuurrrggh. Nina picks herself up off the floor, no longer seeing double. She peeks in the room, suddenly quiet except for voices that didn't sound like they were in the midst of a fight with a maddened super-tough mutant. Looked like an interesting group in there, including one in some sort of red jumpsuit.

Then Nina realized she was still naked.

She quickly re-clothes herself, turns her skin back to normal, and walks in the room. Hello, everyone. That was, ah, one hell of a brute, huh?"

Well... that was certainly surprising. Subtly vibrating to blur his features, Victor looked around the room. It appeared that some more people from the prior timeline had shown up in the hospital to do something. But why? Was it because Victor had just altered the timeline? Creating a cascade event that would alter future probabilities and outcomes?

That seemed rather likely now. Rather than several city blocks of destruction, with the deaths of thousands, not a single man nor woman had perished in the last few minutes.

Victor turned to face the others. He recognized some of them. There was a woman who had apparently been invisible for the most of this - and was picking up her clothes to save herself the embarrassment of turning visible without them. There was the Origami-Man: a mutant that had been on the news in the previous timeline as a case for non-dangerous mutation. He could control paper by the looks of things, but was mostly "harmless" in the prior timeline. The news merely mentioned that he had spent much of one day sending flying paper cranes across the sky for a while, and wouldn't explain.

Then there was the man in the glasses - the Card Wizard. That was a dangerous one. Victor could faintly remember the news bulletin of a downtown city block being leveled by a disintegration beam fired by the mutant's "spells". It had been accident, the man had proclaimed. Just testing out his powers, and he'd fired that blast without realizing it would cut through matter like a hot knife through butter.

And then there had been the girl in the white costume and mask who... just ran out. For some reason, she didn't stand out so much, so... yeah. Victor had no clue what was up with her. Just that she seemed strangely enthusiastic, and Victor would have to wonder why in the world someone would carry around a "costume and mask" with them like that. Did she know what would happen? Did she know, like Victor had known?

Unlikely.

Well, now was clean-up time. Turning to the police and to the other mutants, Victor spoke, speech slightly altered by his vibrations. "Brenton Walker. History of violence and anger management issues. He's got a record on file with the Kingswell City Police Department, and will need to be contained. He's also guilty of the murder of hundreds of civilians... but that's neither here nor there. The media'll call him Berzerker."

Victor turned to the police in the other room. "You'll want to contain this man and keep him on a constant supply of sedatives. His skin is super-dense, so you'll have to administer the sedatives orally, or underneath his fingernails. There are some scientists at Kingswell University's working on a polymer that is flexible and relatively immune to brute-force attempts to break it - ask them to use their polymer for restraints. Tell them to use all of it - the man can exert more force than a naval rail-gun, and the destructive capability of a surface-to-air missile in a single finger. I hypothesize that so long as he doesn't experience an adrenaline rush from feeling angry, he can't ride the high of a Power-Trip and use his super-strength. But it's better not to take risks..."

I'm making up details to push the story forward...

And Dudeons - don't think the Kaitou Kid references went unnoticed! "Smiles and laughter are always good, but never forget your Poker Face."

The police look baffled at first at the blurring speedster giving them orders, but after seeing what berserker has done to the place, they do what the speedster says and get to work to getting Berzerker carried off, restrained and sedated.

As the officers help the medical staff that lay unconscious on the floor, one of the officers turns to you.

"Who are you?"

Sarah

As you go outside to the crowd gathered there, you hear somebody shout "Sarah!"
The next thing you know, somebody runs up to you and gives you a hug. Its Yannike.
"Are you okay? You had me so worried!"

Inspector Valin

Sarah almost sequels in joy at the sight of Yannike alive and well, returning the hug with enthusiasm. After everything that'd happened, she doesn't want to let go, some voice whispering that her friend might fade away. Eventually though the newly changed hero takes a step back, chuckling and nodding shakily to her friend. "I'm fine, Yannie. Just... tried to help out a bit. Make sure the exits were clear"

Thank God you're safe

The young woman looks back across the crowd, towards the site of the battle with Berserker and the lingering heroes with a quiet grin. All these people were in that carzy maniac's line of fire. Those heroes had taken the mutant down and she'd helped. She'd stood up there with them, fighting and dodging and kicking the bad guys through the wall. For those few minutes, she'd really been Lionheart. The thought of that was enough to warm Sarah's heart, something she could be proud of. She'd helped people.

Sarah spends a second reflecting on what happened, before turning to Yannike with a grin. "Good to see you back with us! Typical Yannie, wherever you go things get crazy." The football captain gestures around them at the pandemonium of patients, policemen, reporters and wreckage. Sarah grins across at her friend, earlier fear and nerves fading fast. "Superpowers, mutant attacks... what'll happen next? Any ideas?"

The speedster grinned past the blurring, cocking his head to one side. "A friend." he replied simply before turning to the other meta-humans there.

"And I wouldn't draw another card, Card Wizard. Not unless you want to accidentally use that Disintegration card..." Victor warned, knowing fully well what had happened when the TCG player had done in the prior timeline when accidentally drawing Disintegration and leveling a city block with an out-of-control blast of pure destructive energy. And when the cops showed up, they were attacked by a Hellhound the Card Wizard had summoned earlier.

That gave Victor a thought, actually. The Card Wizard had actually helped, as had the Paper Man. Had Victor's interference in the timeline altered the course of events? Had his change in actions made it so the Card Wizard didn't accidentally let loose with his newfound powers, and turned the Paper Man from an ambivalent bystander to take action?

If so, then was he not responsible now? Victor had to be sure, and couldn't take that chance. So, he made his decision - it wasn't he who had brought down the Berzerker, but the Card Wizard after the Paper Man had hobbled Walker. Even with his god-like speed, Victor couldn't do everything. And their abilties were... useful. Perhaps Victor could convince them to be of help.

"Card Wizard. Origami Man..." Victor started before realizing that the news had never taken to calling them that before in this timeline. And that there was a woman there that Victor did not recognize, and the young girl with the leonine costume had rushed away (but something told Victor he would find her easily). No matter, he pressed forward with what he had to say. "All of you. Thanks for the help. But if you want answers, and a chance to help, meet me tonight at the Liberty Memorial in Sentinel Park."

Don't you hate getting shanghaied by relatives to accompany them for Black Friday shopping? Ugh. Wished I could have gotten this up earlier.

Suzu adjusts his bag as he tries to get a better look at the red figure. The blurring was disconcerting, especially since the figure's voice was still understandable in spite of... whatever he was doing.

"They're not names." the speedster said knowingly. Think it over. I'll be waiting."

An instant later, Victor was gone. There one moment, a blurring red man looking at a small group of confused mutants, and through a hole in the wall where law enforcement, medical staff, and civilians looked on in wonder. And then in the next, there was nothing but the sound of air rushing about the room as the speedster left the hospital faster than the eye could see - back on his race through the city to help in the chaos of the mutations that afflicted the populace.
