View Full Version : Is there any way to modify the Blighter?

As we all know, the Blighter (most notably from Complete Divine) was terrible as-written. After some time searching for alternatives, I've compiled the best bits and pieces I could find. And here's what I got:

Blighter

Blighters bring desolation wherever they tread.

Requirements
Base Attack Bonus: +4
Alignment: Any nongood
Special: The character must be an ex-druid previously capable of casting 3rd-level druid spells.

Hit die
d8

Skill points
4 + Int

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Blighters gain no weapon or armor proficiencies.

Spells per Day: Since blighters are ex-druids, they lose their druid spellcasting abilities. However, they gain access to new, more destructive spells. At each level, the blighter gains new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if she had also gained a level in the druid class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, unless otherwise stated. She must choose her spells from the blighter spell list. The blighter’s caster level is equal to her blighter level plus her druid level.

To cast a blighter spell, a blighter must have a Wisdom score of at least 10 + the spell’s level, so a blighter with a Wisdom of 10 or lower cannot cast these spells. Blighter bonus spells are based on Wisdom, and saving throws against these spells have a DC of 10 + spell level + the blighter’s Wisdom modifier. When the blighter gets 0 spells per day of a given level (for instance 2nd-level spells for a 2nd-level blighter), she gains only the bonus spells she would be entitled to based on her Wisdom score for that spell level. A blighter has access to any spell on the list and can freely choose which to prepare, just as a druid. A blighter prepares and casts spells just as a druid does (though a blighter cannot spontaneously cast summon spells).

Destruction of Nature (Sp): A blighter can kill all nonsentient plant life, rust metal, dissolve rock, and destroy anything on a microbiological level within a radius of 20 feet per blighter level as a full-round action once per day. If a potentially affected plant (or other life form) is under the control of another (such as a druid’s liveoak or a dryad’s home tree), the controller can make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + blighter level + blighter’s Wis modifier) to keep it alive. Affected plants immediately cease photosynthesis, root tapping, and all other methods of sustenance (Other life forms suffer similar effects according to their substance). Like picked flowers, they appear vibrant for several hours, but within a day, they turn brown and wither. Except for plants selected by a controller, nothing can grow in a deforested area until it has a hallow spell cast upon it and it is reseeded.

Destruction of Nature enables a blighter to cast her daily allotment of spells. This ability works in any terrain that has organic life.

Woodland Stride (Ex): This ability functions like the druid’s power, though plants and any growth bends in fear to avoid the blighter, rather than bowing in reverence out of her way.

Desolate Tracks (Ex): This ability functions like the druid’s Trackless step, though instead of concealing her whereabouts, a blighter is incapable of hiding her tracks in environments where plants thrive, as she leaves a trail of blight in her wake.

Blightfire (Su): Starting at 2nd level, as a standard action, a blighter can unleash a scorching blast of fire. This effect deals 5d6 points of fire damage to all creatures within 10 feet (Reflex half; save DC is 10 + blighter’s class level + blighter’s Wis modifier) and ignites flammable objects it touches. Blighters delight in starting wildfires and often use this ability to do so.

Sustenance (Ex): At 2nd level and higher, a blighter no longer needs food or water to survive.

Blightshape (Sp): At 3rd level, the blighter gains a version of the wild shape ability. Blightshape functions like the druid’s wild shape ability, except that the blighter adds the skeleton template to the animal form he chooses to transform into (This stacks with the ex-druid's Wildshape table).

The blighter’s animal form is altered as follows:

-Type changes to Undead.
- Natural armor bonus is +0 (Tiny animal), +1 (Small), +2 (Medium or Large), or +3 (Huge).
- +2 Dexterity, no Constitution score.
- Immunity to cold.
- Damage reduction 5/bludgeoning.

Speak with Dead Animal (Sp): Starting at 4th level, a blighter can converse with dead animals. This ability functions like a speak with dead spell cast by a cleric of a level equal to the total of the character’s druid and blighter levels, except that it affects only corpses of animal creatures. It is usable once per day.

Contagious Touch (Su): At 5th level and higher, a blighter can produce an effect like that of a contagious touch spell once per day. She gains one extra use per day of this ability for every two additional blighter levels she acquires.

Animate Dead Animal (Sp): This ability, gained at 6th level, functions like an animate dead spell, except that it affects only corpses of animal creatures and requires no material component. It is usable once per day.

Unbond (Sp):[b] Beginning at 8th level, a blighter can temporarily separate a bonded animal or magical beast (such as an animal companion, familiar, or mount) from its master once per day. The target creature must be within 40 feet of both its master and the blighter. If the master fails a Will save (DC 10 + blighter level + blighter’s Wis modifier), the bond terminates as if the servitor had died, though this does not cause experience loss in the case of a familiar. Normally hostile creatures attack their masters but are otherwise unaffected. The bond returns after 1 minute per blighter level, restoring all benefits. Alternatively, the master can regain the servitor through the normal methods of acquisition.

[b]A Thousand Faces (Su): At 8th level the blighter gains the ability to change her appearance at will, as if using the Disguise Self spell, but only while in her normal form. This ability functions exactly like the druid’s ability.

Plague (Su): At 10th level and higher, a blighter can spread disease over a large area. This ability functions like the contagious touch ability, except that no attack roll is required and it affects all targets the blighter designates within a 20-foot radius. Plague is usable once per day.

The Blighter is not part of the open game license. I don't think it's wise of you to post it in full on the forums here.

The Blighter is a pretty powerful, tending to overpowered class as-is, one of the few that can outpace the Ur-priest for spell access. Albeit with a much reduced spell list.

It is only terrible for people who insist that the ex-Druid requirement absolutely must involve still having dead Druid levels and can't be satisfied by backstory.

Um, there is no Summon Undead VI-IX, for whatever reason it stops at V.

What I did was was change stuff a bit so it is no longer under copyright:
Blighter:

Prereq: 2nd level spells, +3 BAB
1st: Deforestation (1/day, must pray to regain spells after using this to cast spells, kills all non-sentient plant life except ones they choose in 20 ft radius),
Defiler (like arcane casters, see below) , spellcaster +1+ 1/ 2 class levels,
Spontaneous SNA with skeleton template: You can use SNA spontaneously like Druid ability, but they gain Skeleton template.
Blight Shape (the duration for blightshape is 1 hour per the blighter's level + his druid level (if any) , increases for uses/day but uses skeleton template on animal forms, 4th zombie forms [toughness adds temp hps], 5th large, 9th huge),
• Blight Shape: Type changes to undead
• Natural armor bonus of +0 (Tiny animal), +2 (Small), +4 (medium or Large), +6 (huge),
• +2 Dexterity, no Constitution score or Zombie: +4 Str, no Con, -2 Dex
• Immunity to cold
• Damage reduction 5/bludgeoning or Zombie: 5/slashing
• Cannot be turned or rebuked
2nd level: Blightfire: Each use can be 10 ft spread 20 ft range or 20 ft burst, 5d6 + 1/class level fire (double versus objects), Reflex ½ save, DC is 10 + blighter’s class level + blighter’s Wis modifier, every 1d4 rounds. And ignites flammable objects it touches. Sustenance: no longer needs food/water.
3rd: Speak with Dead animls: at will, speak with Dead (but only animals)
Forest Fear (Su): Starting at 3rd level, the destructive force that the blighter has accepted into himself begins to portray itself in other ways. As a blighter moves, plants bend to avoid him. He may move through any sort of undergrowth (such as natural thorns, briars, overgrown areas, and similar terrain) at his normal speed and without taking damage or suffering any other impairment. However, thorns, briars, and overgrown areas that have been magically manipulated to impede motion still affect her. In addition, plant creatures take a -4 morale penalty to attack the blighter.
4th: Spontaneous with Zombie template: When using SNA may apply Zombie template instead
Contagious Touch (Su): Starting at 4th level, a blighter may spend a move action to activate this ability. The next time the blighter takes damage from a natural melee weapon, or successfully deals damage with a natural melee weapon, the creature that attacked him or that he attacked is subject to a contagion spell (the DC of this effect is 10 + 1/2 the blighter's HD + the blighter's Wis modifier). When a blighter spends his move action, he must also choose which disease to inflict.
BlightFire enhanced: At 5th level, Blightfire sets fire to area when Blight Fire hits it. The area the ability is used stays on fire for 1d4+1 rounds, Blighters are immune to this damage. Any creature starting turn in those areas must roll a Reflex ½ DC equal to Blightfire or take 1d6 fire damage each round. Any character that takes damage is catch on fire as Catch on Fire rules in SRD.
Desolate Tracks (Ex): Starting at 4th level, a blighter begins to destroy the environment around themselves without even noticing. They wither plants and leave scorch marks in the earth (yes, extraordinary scorch marks). The survival DC for any attempts to track them is takes a -6 modifier.

If they wish, a blighter may move at half speed and increase their destruction, leaving a charred line with a width equal to their body width along the ground, called a charnel path. If a blighter makes a closed shape with a charnel path, and repeats the path once per day for a week, and then uses deforestation in the enclosed area, the whole area is subject to the deforestation effect. The blighter may only use this for one hours (600 rounds) per day.
6th: Animate Dead Animal: 1/day Animate Dead for free on animals.
7th: Meditation of Death (Su): Starting at 7th level, a blighter can choose to spend a move action in order to obtain a devastating safeguard. The next time the blighter takes damage from a natural melee weapon, or successfully deals damage with a natural melee weapon, the creature that attacked him or that he attacked is subject to a slay living spell (the DC of this effect is 10 + 1/2 the blighter's HD + the blighter's Wis modifier). When a blighter spends his move action, he can also choose to accompany Contagious Touch with this ability. In that case, the target would be subject to contagion if it succeeded on its save against slay living. He may not use this again until he has gone three consecutive turns without suffering damage, attacking, casting a spell, or being attacked.
8th: Plague: Uses contagion on all targets she chooses within a 20 ft radius, but DC of this effect is 12 + 1/2 the blighter's HD + the blighter's Wis modifier .
9th: You are the Desert: A blighter may use Desolate Tracks as much as he wants to in a day.
10th: Epidemic: By meditating for an hour, a blighter may cause the effect of Contagious Touch in a one mile radius, centered around him, and may designate one target/level within the area to be unaffected by the effect.

Basically, rewrite it. No longer requires level 3 druid spells, but 2nd level spells. Also only +3 BAB.
You can ignore the Defile ability if you want (I made him a Defiler like Dark Sun world).

Yeah, why is so much BAb required for a spellcaster?
If the entry is 4th BAb, that means 6 levels of Druid. So you can't be one till 7th character level.

Lowering to 3rd BAB means 4th level Druid. So you can't be one till 5th character level.

The class isn't bad because of things it lacks; it's bad because of things it adds.

Just ignore the part about killing a forest to regain spells, change its casting to 9/10 druid spell advancement, add the necromancy spells back to its spells known, and it's more than playable.

Maybe add a detail that meditating for spells kills nearby plant life, if you really want to keep that bit of fluff.

And takes away. You end up repeating your druid progression of... everything for a marginally faster progression off of a comparable list (or substantially worse in the case of spells).

Blightfire is pretty useless after about ECL 7. Flat 5d6 fire damage, Ref for half with a lowish DC, and it doesn't scale at all? Reserve feats are better than that.

Though wider in application, the Blighter still requires you to kill nature to cast spells. Also Desolate Tracks function nothing like Trackless Step, I'd remove the reference.

My favorite is to be an Elan:) Selling out your principles for freedom from aging is an age-old motivator...come to think of it isn't that what the Epic of Gilgamesh was about? Oldest story in the book then.

As a bonus, Elan is a good entry into Souleater, which is a good fit flavor-wise, even if it yields a somewhat unoptimized build.
