What
Hero by Night by DJ Coffman is a post-post-modern superhero comic. By that I mean, it shows an awareness of the history and tropes of the genre that goes all the way past irony, over the horizon and re-emerges from the other side as neo-sincerity. I'm not happy with that explanation but it's hard to put this feeling into words, this...sophisticated yet genuine affection. The online updates just started on the third issue; apparently the print version hits stores earlier.

Pluses
The intro Diaries are fantastic. DJ manages to evoke the art style and plots of classic superhero comic books while actually being cooler than them, sort of like what Quentin Tarantino does to casual dialogue. Hero by Night has a heavy update schedule, Monday through Friday. DJ is an experienced webcomicker who knows what he's doing and it all seems very slick and professional.

Cautions
Let's see...it's a newer webcomic so you'll quickly whip through the archives and be left wanting more. Also, the current issues haven't been quite as engaging for me as the Diaries were; I hope that he does some more prequel stories later (and that I start feeling the current story more (update: both wishes were granted with wonderful speed. :smallcool:)). There are some disturbing visuals of the dismemberment/disfigurement type.

Note
I'm going to link the first page of his older webcomic here. Just so you know, there's a *NSFW* gesture right there on the first page: Yirmumah (http://yirmumah.net/archives.php?date=20031005). The choice of just which super-high-quality under-discussed webcomic to spotlight remains incredibly difficult. Also, I apologize for the late update; I work weekends and holidays (I'm back in college again) so holiday weekends are actually more work for me, not less.

Interesting take on this. I like it. It's "cool" as kids these days say.

Hero by Night also comes out in monthly issues, Which I've been picking up. The cover of each new issue is posted on the day the full comic is sold in comic stores, so I don't know if it's really a web comic as much as an archival of a plain ol' comic (well, except the diaries)
Regardless, it's still a very good read. The characters of the current stories don't really strike me, but it's got such an abundance of heart that it can't help but make you smile.
