This made me laugh a bit.

Backpack can carry 30 lbs of gear.

Of the preset Equipment Packs:
Explorers pack has 37 lbs of gear, not including the rope & bedroll.
Dungeoneers pack has 46-1/2 lbs, not including rope.
Burglars Back has 32-1/2, not including rope.

Notice these are the sort of things you store outside your backpack ? Sort of like a militaryrucksack frame. 30 pounds in, with plenty of loops and hooks to hold things on the outside

That's why I didn't include rope & bedroll in the weight. Waters kin would be another thing I suppose, which would drop another 5 lbs.

Edit: point taken, the backpack doesn't seem to have a strict limit on carrying capacity, only on what may be carried inside. Interesting.

I don't they mean pack as in "You get sack with these specific things in it" so much as they mean "This is a package (set) of things you own".

for sure. But you'd think they were things you'd want to take with you.

However, apparent contradiction is solved once I realized there isn't actually a limit on the backpack, just how much can be put inside it.

Also, most backgrounds don't support the idea you're a (murder)hobo (maybe except hermit, outlander and urchin), stuff in the starter pack may just be a bunch of things that belongs to you and that are handy for adventuring, not literally everything you own.
