It just occurred to me, rereading 1002 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1002.html), that the priest threatening to buff the vampire is the high priest of Sunna (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0999.html), Goddess of the Sun. I'd bet Sunna's priests are traditionally charged with, among other things, hunting down undead and destroying them.* The idea of helping a vampire probably sickens him more than it would, say, the high priest of Heimdal, because normally his job is to destroy vampires.
I like the little bits of character that the Giant tosses in for the minor NPCs.
