I need to spend no more than 3k gold reducing the weight of Full Plate armor. Is there a way?
(OK, I don't "need" to, because it doesn't stack, but still.)

Well, you can get a small weight reduction for pretty cheap by applying the Feycraft template (DMG II) for 500 gold. That'll drop off 10% of the weight.

It would certainly affect the AC, but you could simply discard bits and pieces.

Probably not a good solution, but a possibility of you situation is dire.

Probably would take much longer than would be useful. Especially if the armor is built to last (aka, masterwork or better).

I'm asking the DM if I can use it. This is nice.

I am wanting to personally craft it, is why I have to ask...if I was just buying...well, I'd still feel better for asking, but I think it'd be an easier sell.

From Dragon 358: Lightweight armour improvement, 200 gp for light/medium, 500 gp for heavy, reduces weight by 20%. Should stack with Feycraft.

I dont think its RAW, you you could probably get your GM to reduce the weight if you got a set of Gloryborn armor, DMGII.

hmm. Gloryborn's fluff does fit my fluff. But I don't think it'll work
Also, she banned Dragon Magazine for some reason.

Wildwood out of RotW. Weight 75%, Cost double armor+masterwork.

Unapproachable East p58: Bluewood, 50% weight for 1,200gp, no penalties.

Pretty cool. I'll check those out. Being made of wood might clash with my aesthetic though, lol. I'll see what I can do though.

Halfweight armor special ability (Underdark) - 50% less weight, and count as lighter armor category for all but protection (thus mithral full plate will be a light armor)
Price +3 bonus (+2 bonus if used on illithidwrought armor)

Illithidwrought armor gives +1 insight to AC (+2 if wearer is psionic); Price +2 bonus (+1 for non-psionic characters)

Probably not a good solution, but a possibility of you situation is dire. You are not allowed to only don parts of a full plate. You would need sectioned armor (PlH p. 70) for that.

Mithral costs 2950 if you craft it yourself. The DC is also low enough, the sources of bonuses to craft plentiful enough, that you can craft it without putting any ranks in the actual Craft skill. The real question is whether you have time to craft it.

You need to pay a third of the retail price in raw materials to build it 10500/3 gp = 3500 gp.

I assumed he already budgeted for the full plate itself. He didn't say he had 3k gold to spend on the full plate. Just 3k gold to spend on reducing its weight.

So, if you already have planned to pay the cost for masterwork full plate, mithral adds (9000-150)/3 = 2950gp onto that.

You cannot turn a masterwork steel full plate into a mithral full plate. You have to make it from scratch.

I am not suggesting otherwise.

Cast Minor Servitor on your armor, shuffle it's feat to Slender (Dragon #324) - minus 10% of weight

If you able to get 2 feats on you new Minor Servitor (Armor), then you may shuffle them to Willing Deformity and Deformity (Gaunt) - it will halve the weight (but required your armor to have Evil alignment)

If DM allow to use flaws for your Minor Servitor, Lightweight flaw (Dragon #328) will halve it's weight

In total, Slender+Gaunt+Lightweight are able to drop the weight of steel Medium-sized Full Plate down to 11,25 lb - lighter than "standard" Leather, and barely heavier than Padded armor
