View Full Version : The Brick Awards: the Best of the Worst tournament (#141-#190)

About 2 years ago, a great forumite named Porthos created an OOTS voting contest (based on a much shorter lived, but equally fantastic, previous version) which had forum goers vote on the best OOTS strips of all time. It was an impressive contest which has gone on for over 2 years (and only ended, or went on hiatus, due to running out of strips) and will undoubtedly be remembered in this forum as one of the most well-run ongoing threads on here.

This is not that contest. This is a shameless mockery of that contest.

Welcome to The Brick Awards, the best of the worst tournament!

The Stick Awards were handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders. However, when voting for the Stick awards, some strips felt left out, abused, unloved. Whether they simply were a weak strip, or a decent strip surrounded by amazing strips, for whatever reason some strips just didn't get any votes. :smallfrown:

So this contest is designed to give those strips the morale boost they need and deserve! I am collecting all the strips which received zero votes in the Stick awards and presenting them in groups of ten (Or, at least close to ten, since I don't want to cut off in the middle of a group of strips). We will then vote as to which is our favorite of the worst strips so we can finally decide which the best worst strip is!

(And let's be honest, even the worst OOTS strips are still pretty good and deserve our appreciation!)

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten eight listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting for this week will close on Tuesday, November 24 at 10AM (MT). Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last week, we had a heart crushing tale of Haley counting every penny she owned to pay for her father's ransom. Unfortunately for her, it was beaten by a strip with hornets and angry druids.
:durkon: #138 Tomorrow's Technology Today (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0138.html) was our winner.

178. I'm sure this got zero votes only because nobody recognized the significance of Blackwing at the point where voting commenced.

Hmmm... 168 or 176? Mind you, there's a few good ones in that selection...

Although the 'Elan's head broke my fall', was funny, I'll go with 176 and the halfling rage jumping attack! Plus, heh, annis!

I'm going with 175. I liked the callback 178 got when V was being captured by Enor and Ganji, but as someone who prefers hexagonal grids in games anyways, I appreciated 175.

174 for :vaarsuvius: being :vaarsuvius: - but this time literally nobody understands them.

I'll vote for 188 because for whatever reason Roy's statement made me chuckle:

"I dream of the day when I will learn to stop asking questions to which I will regret learning the answers."

And his "typical, really" over the Starmetal.

With Belkar calling V a "pompous jackass" as an extra bonus. :smallwink:

So many good ones here. Really, the first three rounds here have shown how many good strips got completely skunked during the Stick Awards. While there's a couple weak links here I'm baffled that all of these got absolutely no love the first time around.

I love how Samantha, the powerful wizard she is, gets knocked out by a single punch by a old man, a nice spin on the whole silly "take a bullet to the face and you're fine, get tapped on the shoulder and be downed if you're at 1 HP" trope in, well, pretty much any game that has health points.

I've always thought that the hex-based strips were an underrated part of the second book. I've always liked the punchline of 175 for how simple yet elegant it was.

But, ultimately, I'm a sucker for a good perspective joke, and while I personally wasn't a fan of the whole "look what the Young Adult had in his stash *wink wink*" joke, the hilarious anticlimax of the Starmetal being so tiny tips my scales in favour of 188.

I think 188 is the best of this lot, although there are a few clever ones in the mix.

#188 has this beautiful gem:

:roy: I dream of the day when I will learn to stop asking questions to which I will regret learning the answers.

#168 always gets a laugh out of me.

Wow, there's a few of these I can't believe no one voted for... 168 is the cream of the crop... Or rather, the pseudo-cream of what was left of the crop after the cream got removed during the original vote.

178 I love V. She doesn't get the credit she deserves on here for how funny her lines are throughout the comic.

I wasn't a huge fan of the bandit arc, though if the issue that had Belkar set the tents of fire were here I would've voted for it because that is one of the funniest Belk moments in the entire comic.

I'll take 156 for an unexpected character moment from Elan.

168: Running on Empty is my favorite of the lot. Lots of fun plot action and a few good jokes, too.

I choose 156! Go Elan!

I don't like any of these very much.

I'll go with #156 for Elan preparing to do his bardic duty.

176 for halfling rage jump attacks, hexagons, and lizard wizards.

Ditto! 188.

188 for Roy's excellent comment on regret, questions, answers and the dreaming thereof (also Belkar's aside on V's bragging style).

Pretty much has to be 188.

Psst, 174 isn't in the tournament. It did too well in the Stick Awards:smallsmile:

#168 :amused:

What do you mean?

I take it back; the increasing use of Blackwing as foil to Vaarsuvius had already occurred in the Draketooth ziggurat, as well as the "You were the lizard?" remark. My vote still stands, though.

My vote goes to #156, not that it's going to affect anything.

And for the slightly tardy results (Life got in the way!)

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!

:roy: 188 A Matter of Perspective (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0188.html) is the winner this week. We had an impressive write-in campaign for #174 (apparently), but not enough to make much of a difference.

152 and 163 go on to the ultra brick awards!

I kind of sensed shortly after voting for it that 188 had some momentum behind it.
