View Full Version : [5e, Lvl 6, Solo, Arena] Zman's Arena -Pau'La

Zman
2015-11-19, 12:33 PM
As you stand at the end of the small dark hallway you can see the Arena before you through the grated door. The booming voice of an announcer can be heard, "Welcome ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages! Today, Pau'La tries her mettle in the Arena!!!" A wave of cheers meets his thunderous booming voice...

A horn sounds, the gate opens, and you step foot into the Arena. It is a solid thirty paces square with an open roof, cheering fans can be seen beyond the walls, so can the armed guards that would prevent any combatant from attempting to flee the arena. In each of the cardinal directions lie elevated platforms, stairs leading up to them. Each adorned with a pair of sinister grotesque stone guardian, their palms upheld filled with fire. To the northwest lies a tall platform, to the northwest a patch of broken ground only the surest footed would dare tread, to the southwest, huge stone pillars rising towards the sky, to the southeast another stone platform rises from the ground, and in the center is a small raised platform with a pedestal in its center. You know by pressing down upon the pedestal you will summon for the first wave....

You faintly hear the booming voice wishing you farewell, "For fame and glory! Be bold champion!!"

You are up!

Pau'la strode confidently into the arena. "Pelor bless all of us! Today you will see a real battle!" She yelled to the crowd as she reached the starting pillar. "I am ready now. Are you?"

Zman
2015-11-19, 02:47 PM
Round 2, you have 10' of movement left, you are on the center platform. You still have your action.

What equipment is out? Why is your speed listed as 20'? You have the Str for Heavy armor and shouldn't be slowed down.

Estralita
2015-11-19, 02:58 PM
Oops. My mistake. Changed to 30 feet.

Pau'la turned, taking in all the gates. She pulled a javelin from her holster. Pelor, led me strength! she cried, ready for the games to begin.

Zman
2015-11-19, 04:07 PM
As Pau'La touches the pedestal four gates slam open, the smell of rotting putrid flesh is almost instantaneous and four hideous bloated corpses begin to shamble out... the are approaching from the north, south, east, and west.

[roll0][roll1][roll2][roll3]

Paula still has 10' of movement and her action. Please specify which square you will be moving to from now on, the map is updated every single turn in different tabs. Diagnol costs 5', 10', 5', 10' alternating etc. Any questions ask!

Estralita
2015-11-20, 12:51 AM
Pau'la, seeing the zombies entrance, jumped into action. "Pelor take you!" She cried, pulling out a second javelin, and letting both fly at the northern zombie.

Attacking the Northern Zombie. If allowed, pulling a second javelin to use as the second attack.
Attack 1:

Attack 2:

Zman
2015-11-20, 08:57 AM
Pau'La manages to throw both her Javelins, but it's a difficult range... But her skill and martial prowess shines, both Javelins landing with a meaty thwack...

Disadvantage due to range
[roll0]

Zman
2015-11-20, 02:21 PM
The zombies shamble onward, closing in on the paladin... the statues stare silently into nothingness...

Zombies move, map is updated. Make sure you check the tabs on the bottom, it will be updated every round.
[roll0][roll1][roll2][roll3]

Round 3!

Estralita
2015-11-21, 11:26 PM
How big are the squares? 5 ft?

Zman
2015-11-22, 12:21 AM
Yes, standard 5'

Estralita
2015-11-22, 12:27 AM
Sorry to keep asking questions, but can I draw 2 javelins at once for extra attack?

Zman
2015-11-22, 01:40 PM
Yes, I'm letting you multiattack with javelins. If you can multiattack with a bow, you should be able to with javelins.

Estralita
2015-11-22, 05:14 PM
"Enough with you!" Pau'la cried, pulling out two more javelins as she rushed towards the zombie she attacked last, launching the javelins once she felt she was close enough.

Moving to N15. I think I no longer have disadvantage. Also these things have low AC, so I think I can kill it now, (Prepare for Nat 1s)
[roll0]
[roll1]

[roll2]
[roll3]

Zman
2015-11-22, 10:09 PM
Yet again, both javelins surely find their mark... A loud crack can be heard as the zombie's spine was severed...

Undead Fortitude
[roll0] DC14
[roll1] DC10

I'll update the map and finish the turn tomorrow.

Zman

Map updated

Round 4
[roll0][roll1][roll2][roll3]

You are up!

Estralita
2015-11-24, 11:21 PM
Pau'la chuckled a little to herself. The zombies just kept crawling forwards. Perfect for her to clean up. Time to get serious. She said a quick prayer to her god, imbuing her with radiant energy, before drawing her halberd and attacking the nearest one.

Bonus action casting Divine Favor. Action attacking the zombie right next to her.

[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2] Radiant energy

Zman
2015-11-24, 11:32 PM
Don't you have two attacks?

Estralita
2015-11-24, 11:40 PM
Oh, right, I forgot that I get an extra attack in addition to my bonus action attack!
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

I think I got him.

Zman
2015-11-27, 11:53 AM
Pau'La manages two solid attacks, her weapon coursing with radiant energy striking the grotesque corpse dead... The remaining two zombies close the distance and rake at her... one Zombie puts her on the defensive while the others nasty finders rake at her neck...

While on the defensive two of the Gargoyle statues spring to life launching bolts of fire at Pau'La, one misses wildly but the other lands glancing off her armor, just barely...

[roll0][roll1][roll2]Hit
[roll3][roll4][roll5]Crit

14 Damage, ouch!

Round 5!
[roll6][roll7][roll8][roll9]
Firebolt Crit, 4 Damage!

You are up, map is updated.

Estralita
2015-11-27, 12:58 PM
Even when successfully slaying zombies in the name of her god, Pau'la remained vigilant. At the zombies cold, unclean touch, Pau'la spun around and lashed out at it as well.

This was the endgame of the round. Soon one side would fall. And it wasn't going to be her. What would she say to her God after death if she let herself fall so easily?

Polearm Master to the rescue!
Reaction attack for entering Pau'la's reach (too bad Pau'la can only make one, but them's the breaks):
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

And now for Pau'la's actual turn. I would like it so if Pau'la kills the first zombie, Pau'la could redirect the rest of the attacks to the other zombie. Is that ok? (Of course, now that I've asked, I won't even kill the first zombie this round)
[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]

[roll6]
[roll7]
[roll8]

Bonus Action attack:
[roll9]
[roll10]

[roll1]
Ten characters

Zman
2015-11-27, 01:57 PM
Pau'La manages to down another corpse and wound the fourth at a blinding pace... she is able to easily avoid the retaliation...

The statues are silent...

Damn! Wrecking shop! Radiant damage helps every turn too!

[roll0][roll1][roll2]

Round 6!
[roll3][roll4][roll5][roll6]

Estralita
2015-11-27, 02:27 PM
Pau'la smiled as yet another fell. "Pelor have mercy on you all!" she cried, as she moved to attack the last zombie. Because I won't. She added mentally.

Let's see if we can finish the round!

[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]

[roll6]
[roll7]
[roll8]

Zman
2015-11-27, 02:43 PM
Pau'La is able to finish off another of the undead... as the final one is slain the Arena feels like a more peacful place...

Nice, 36 seconds. You still have your move and free item interaction left if you so choose.

Estralita
2015-11-27, 02:47 PM
Would picking up some of the javelins count for the object interaction?

Zman
2015-11-27, 02:51 PM
Only if you are moving over the area where one was, and then only a single Javelin.

Estralita
2015-11-27, 03:03 PM
Pau'la wasted no more time, heading over to the pedestal to start the next round.

Pau'la needs no rest! Plus she's got Lay on Hands, so she can heal next round anyway.

Zman
2015-11-27, 04:21 PM
As Paula hits the button another door suddenly slams open to the east and an even more grotesque corpse begins stumbling out...

The statues spring to life but niether of the fire bolts finds its mark...

\
Which door??
[roll0]
Ogre moves

Round 7!
[roll1][roll2][roll3][roll4]

Estralita
2015-11-27, 05:52 PM
Pau'la smiled. Looked like they wanted to keep things moving. Pau'la stepped forwards, and healed her damage from the last fight.

Paula steps diagonally and uses lay on hands to heal 15 hp.

Are you going to add my time to the scoreboard?

Zman
2015-11-27, 09:33 PM
As Pau'La sidesteps and heals herself, the Ogre closes the distance...

You get your AoO, as you know he had to dash to get there, haha.

Yes, I'm going to update the table, just didn't get there yet.

Round 8
[roll0][roll1][roll2][roll3]

Estralita
2015-11-27, 10:15 PM
Pau'la waited until the time was right, then launched a flurry of attacks at the giant zombie.

I believe Divine Favor is still up, although Pau'la can lose the spell if she fails a Concentration check:
The quicker this goes, the more use I get out of it, so let's go. Reaction Attack:
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

Now Everything Else:
[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]

[roll6]
[roll7]
[roll8]

[roll9]
[roll10]
[roll11]

Zman
2015-11-27, 10:39 PM
Speaking of which, you never made your three Concentration Saves. Could have affected the combat and is still relevant.

Estralita
2015-11-27, 10:47 PM
Want me to make them now? None of the damage would give a DC greater than 10, so...
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

Zman
2015-11-27, 11:07 PM
Pau'La makes multiple massive gashes in the Ogre Zombie before it attempts to retaliate... The Zombie's attack misses... And the statues are silent...

38 Damage, Damn!

[roll0][roll1][roll2]

Round 9
[roll3][roll4][roll5][roll6]

Estralita
2015-11-27, 11:25 PM
Pau'la kept up her assault on the Ogre Zombie. The thing was slow, but looked like it would hit hard. The faster she could take it down, the better.

These zombies really have terrible AC, don't they. Which means it's probably time for Pau'la to roll a Nat 1.:smallfrown:

[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]

[roll6]
[roll7]
[roll8]

Ooh, a crit. May I Smite with that attack?

Zman
2015-11-28, 12:21 AM
As far as I know you choose to smite on a hit, so yes, I believe you can smite now. May just put it down!

Estralita
2015-11-28, 12:23 AM
Woo! Luck be a lady tonight!
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

Zman
2015-11-28, 12:37 AM
Pau'La lands two three massive blows, the Ogre Zombie is practically falling apart...

Do t you get to roll additional smite as well? That will most likely kill it!

Estralita
2015-11-28, 12:40 AM
Alrighty then
[roll0]

Well, that's a waste of a Second Level Spell slot

Zman
2015-11-28, 12:49 AM
With the might of divinity behind her swings, Pau'La tends the undead in two, radiant energy dancing at the edges of the wounds as the corpse is lifeless once more...

Actually a 1st level slot does 2d8 normally. You also forgot your additional d8 for undead target.

And the Wave is done. Damn. That was fast.

Estralita
2015-11-28, 01:06 AM
Oh, good. Did it really only need 3 hp of damage to knock it out?

Zman
2015-11-28, 08:41 AM
Actually yes, by my count it was at 3/85 haha!

Estralita
2015-11-28, 01:35 PM
"Was that supposed to be hard?!" Pau'la yelled to the crowd, and kicking the now no-longer moving corpse. I can't honor my God without a real challenge!" she cried, stepping towards the pedestal once again.

Time to make Pau'la regret those words...

Zman
2015-11-30, 12:31 PM
As she activates it two Statues spring to life and swoop towards her...
[roll0][roll1]

You activated it at the end of Round 9.

Round 10.

Zman
2015-11-30, 12:33 PM
The Gargoyles spring forward and rake at her almost immediately...

G1 Bite[roll0][roll1][roll2]
G1 Claw[roll3][roll4][roll5]
G2 Bite[roll6][roll7][roll8] Hit for 5 damage
G2 Claw[roll9][roll10][roll11]

Currently at 49/57 HP

Now it is Round 10

Estralita
2015-11-30, 12:36 PM
Does she get an opportunity attack with Polearm Master?

Zman
2015-11-30, 12:47 PM
Yes, she has her reaction when they enter reach.

Estralita
2015-11-30, 01:16 PM
First things first, Concentration check to see if she holds onto divine favor:
[roll0]

Estralita
2015-11-30, 07:02 PM
"Now that's more like it!"Pau'la shouted, reacting instinctively to the gargoyle's approach and lashing out. The three traded blows, with Pau'la managing to dodge most, if unfortunately not all.

Now, Attack! Attacking the gargoyle that hit Pau'la!
Reaction:
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

And Pau'la's turn:

[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]

[roll6]
[roll7]
[roll8]

[roll9]
[roll10]
[roll11]

Estralita
2015-11-30, 07:05 PM
Wow I'm rolling well. No Smite this time. I want to see where I stand, and don't want to wast spell slots just yet.

[roll0]
[roll1]

Zman
2015-11-30, 09:18 PM
Pau'La's manages to be quick and land some telling blows on the Gargoys, chips of stone fly off but the weapons doesn't seem to bite deep like flesh..

Total of 37pts of damage after resistances. Wow. Like seriously nasty.

Gargoyles step for advantage.

G1 Bite[roll0][roll1][roll2][roll3]
G1 Claw[roll4][roll5][roll6][roll7]
G2 Bite[roll8][roll9][roll10][roll11]
G2 Claw[roll12][roll13][roll14][roll15]

15pts of damage. Not stellar rolls, haha!

Round 11

Estralita
2015-11-30, 10:28 PM
Oww. First things first, three Concentration Checks:
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

Bye Bye, Divine Favor, Although I do have another idea. How many waves are there going to be again?

Zman
2015-11-30, 10:32 PM
Losing divine favor hurts a bit.

Five waves.

Estralita
2015-11-30, 10:35 PM
Five Waves total, or five more waves? Trying to figure out spell conservation

Zman
2015-11-30, 11:05 PM
Five waves total.

Estralita
2015-12-02, 08:39 PM
"Away with you!"Pau'la cried out, charging her weapon with energy of a different sort, before resuming her attack on the gargoyle.

Bonus Action casting Thunderous Smite, Actions are attacking the wounded Gargoyle. If the Gargoyle is knocked back after the first hit, redirect to the other one
Attacks:
[roll0]
[roll1]

[roll2]
[roll3]

If Thunderous Smite hits
[roll4]
Oh,and I forgot! Pau'la has Great Weapon Fighting, so she can reroll ones and twos on damage dice! And according to the internet, that includes the dice for smites. What do you think?

Zman
2015-12-02, 10:19 PM
One of the Gargoyles is knocked backwards by a thunderous smite, it regains its feat and tenatively moves back into melee careful to avoide deadly strikes from the Paladin...

Technically, moose are supposedly all weapon damage dice. Personally I think RAI was just the weapon, bit it's fine.

You almost killed one of the Gargoyles.
Strength Save [roll0]. If failed, the Gargoyle takes the Doge action and moves back to help Flank. If succes, it is attacking.

[roll1][roll2]

Wow, fails its strength save, is pushed back and knocked prone. Gets up and dodges in, you get your AoO at disadvantage.

Second one misses, mseriously terrible rolls! The 8 potential attack rolls and the Str save, highest roll was an 11!

Round 12!

Estralita
2015-12-02, 11:31 PM
Will the nearly dead gargoyle impose disadvantage on all attacks against it?

Zman
2015-12-03, 08:48 AM
Yes, if attacking the wounded Gargoyle you have Didadvsntage on all attacks, including that AoO it just triggered.

Estralita
2015-12-03, 04:21 PM
Pau'la kept her assault up against the wounded gargoyle. If she could just get rid of one, it would make the rest of the fight much easier.

Disadvantage or not, the fight must go on:

[roll0][roll1]
[roll2]

[roll3][roll4]
[roll5]

[roll6][roll7]
[roll8]

[roll9][roll10]
[roll11]

Zman
2015-12-03, 04:31 PM
The gargoyle is able to evade nearly all of Pau'La's strikes... nearly is the operative word, her final strike lands and manages to sever the head from the Gargoyle as its kin keeps up the assault...

G1 is dead thanks to that max damage hit!

G2 Bite[roll0][roll1][roll2] 4 Damage, down to 30/57
G2 Claw[roll3][roll4][roll5]

Round 13!

Estralita
2015-12-04, 04:10 PM
Pau'la grinned and turned to the other. "You might want to run." She said, imbuing more divine power into her halberd, before attacking with vigor.

Bonus Action Divine Favor again. And Attack:
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]

[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]

Zman
2015-12-04, 04:33 PM
Pau'La's attacks are less productive then she had hoped, but her halbers glanced off the shoulder of the Gargoyle, a mix of stoney flesh chipped away before the living statue retaliated...

You dealt 6 Damage.

G2 Bite[roll0][roll1][roll2]
G2 Claw[roll3][roll4][roll5] Hit 5 Damage

Round 14!

Estralita
2015-12-04, 04:54 PM
Pau'la winced at the bite, trying to hold her focus:

PleasePleasePleasePleasePlease:
[roll0]

Estralita
2015-12-04, 05:19 PM
Once Pau'la had a grip on herself, she attacked again, full-force.

Attack!!!

[roll3]
[roll4]
[roll5]

[roll6]
[roll7]
[roll8]

Estralita
2015-12-04, 05:20 PM
Looks Like I rolled some ones. May I reroll them?

Zman
2015-12-04, 05:25 PM
Pau'La renews her assault, slashing at the Gargoyle before following up with the haft of her Halberd...

I've got it for you. The one was on a miss, so it doesn't matter.
[roll0]

16pts of damage, nice round!

Zman
2015-12-04, 05:27 PM
The Gargoyle doesn't miss a beat as it retaliates against the vicious polearms attacks, angered as its innate resistances are of no use against her divine energies...

G2 Bite[roll0][roll1][roll2] Hit 3 Damage
G2 Claw[roll3][roll4][roll5]

Turn 15!

Estralita
2015-12-05, 10:37 PM
Pau'la grew more excited, swinging more wildly. "Face the wrath of Pelor!"

[roll0]

Zman
2015-12-06, 12:35 AM
Pau'La hammers her foes with her halter unrelentingly, mlanding telling blow after telling blow infused with divine energies...

Wow, 24 Damage!

[roll0][roll1][roll2]Almost a Crit, bus abysmal damage rolls. 3 Damage and a Con Save!

Round 16!

Estralita
2015-12-06, 12:54 AM
[roll0]
And stupid character limits!

Estralita
2015-12-06, 01:11 AM
Pau'la barely felt the scratch of the creature as she held her halberd out between them "Normally, a paladin should offer surrender to weakened opponents." She said, drawing her weapon back for a moment. She listened for the crowd's reaction for a moment, then smiled. "Unfortunately for you, I'm not that kind of Paladin." She said, before resuming her attack with extra vigor.

Hopefully I can finish it off here:

Pau'la's final blows are enough to fell the final Gargoyle, as the last blow is struck the Arena finds itself peaceful once more...

Wave 3 complete, 96'seconds.

You can heal and take a 30s breather now before Wave 4

Estralita
2015-12-06, 06:19 PM
Seeing the gargoyle fall, Pau'la let out a slow breath. That was a much better fight. She was beginning to feel the hits. Which meant-

"Time for an intermission, everybody!"

So yeah, taking that breather. Want to save Lay on Hands and the Potions for during the fights if I need them.
Spending 4 hit dice here:
[roll0]
[roll1]
[roll2]
[roll3]

Zman
2015-12-06, 06:26 PM
Ok, that's 24HP, you have the option to burn up those other two HD if you want?

Edit: also, you'll need some fluff for Pau'la in my recruitment thread, haha.

Estralita
2015-12-06, 10:15 PM
Okay, let's go for broke. Not like I don't have other healing for later.

[roll0]
[roll1]

As for the other thing, I'm on it. No need to fret.

Zman
2015-12-07, 01:55 PM
After taking some time to catch her breath, Pau'La is again standing tall, no worse for the wear ready to face the continued trials...

Fully healed. You are up with full action in Round 23! First Wave 4 combatant... what will the Arena have for you...

Estralita
2015-12-11, 05:19 PM
Pau'la had closed her eyes, listening to the sounds of the crowd, and held her arms out. Glory for her meant glory for her god. So the better equipped she was to battle, the more glory to Pelor. "Now you will see a fight worthy of Pelor!' she yelled, activating the platform for the fourth time.

Zman
2015-12-11, 10:38 PM
As Pau'la activates the pedestal two more gates slam open, to the west and south, inside each gate is eight motionless suits of armor...

[roll0][roll1]

Estralita
2015-12-11, 11:10 PM
Is the map updated?

Zman
2015-12-11, 11:55 PM
No, not yet. It's a pain on my tablet.

Zman
2015-12-14, 02:01 PM
Map is updated, there are effectively two suits of armor in each of those squares with an "A"

Estralita
2015-12-16, 01:45 PM
Pau'la bit her lip, considering her options. Then she made a break for the west, pulling her javelins and attacking.

Moves to L17 and attack two suits of armor!

Her first javeling connects with a suit of armor... toppling it... as it falls to the floor with a clang two suits within that room spring to live and close on her...

Which one did she hit
[roll0]

Now, which ones.... [roll1][roll2]

Round 24!

Estralita
2015-12-16, 02:02 PM
Since Pau'la was using her Javelins, and not her Halberd, does she still get the AoO from Polearm Master?I wouldn't think so...

Zman
2015-12-16, 02:05 PM
