Eight adventurers from different walks of life, all possessing unique skills and abilities, travel west along the King's Road (https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1wyIW6AzUZS6BuNSlTx8ruuVGaraY1nJOtui0gdLTBb0/edit?usp=sharing) towards the town of Winterhaven. Each has their own reasons to be making their way to the small walled town. The path winds through the hills and dales of what was, long ago, the heartlands of the empire of Nerath. It is late fall and the earth is beginning to grow hard as the leaves change from green to brilliant yellows, reds, and oranges. Rocks and boulders dot the sides of the ancient highway.

The wind blows gently over the land beneath the pale autumn sun. The king's way is smooth and level, featuring the occasional cobblestone, remnants of a time long past and indicators of decades of neglect.

Jorgen knelt down, as his foot came across one of the few remaining cobblestones. His staff planted on the ground, leaning against his shoulder, he brushed aside some of the dirt around the stone. It may not have meant much to everyone else, but it was just a reminder to him of how far everyone had fallen from the Goddess's path. That they were once civilized, masters of the world, and a road like this would be a gleaming river of such stones, polished to a shine. At least it was according to his own mental images and ancient tomes.

His eyes glanced ahead towards the stones near the road, and all the blind spots they provided. His parents would love a place like that. Cutting apart travelers like them to loot their corpses. It put a scowl on his face as he stood back up, his eyes glancing over towards Eylon. He could almost see his mother in her, readying her blade for the massacre. "Bandit territory," he told her quietly, taking up his staff in a martial grip, ready to defend himself. If there wasn't bandits around here, it was because they already massacred someone else. Or they were busy fighting over such a prime location between two or more bands.

If the young barbarian heard her travelling companion, she gave no sign, not even slowing down as she passed him down.

Usually, Elyon was of the opinion that a walk was meant to be enjoyed. Taking your time in life was never a waste, fights would manage to find you sooner or later anyway, so there was no reason to rush. Enjoy life as it came, and leave the worrying to others, she always said. Today, however, was a special case. She certainly had picked up her usual pace, feeling that any delay before Winterhaven could prove to be fatal. What a strange feeling. She was used to never be concerned about anyone, herself included. Yet the news of Douven's disappearance caused a new sensation to appear in her chest.

She didn't like this sensation.

"Hey, Jurgen, you keeping up?"

Inwardly, she knew the half orc would need a lot more to begin to slow down. Her tribe often talked of wizards as wimps, falling on their arses each time the wind blowed a bit strong. Clearly, they had never met Jurgen Windrunner. He was a little - okay, a lot - weird, but Elyon counted herself lucky to have someone like that to watch her back, despite their frequent bickerings. But right now, she was in no mood for gentle teasing, and as a result, had been unusually snappy. No, it was definitely not a good day.

At this point, I think the first thing I'll do when I find Douven is punch him in the face. Serves this bastard right.

This, perhaps, was the only comfort she could find.

Jorgen took a quick three step to catch up to Elyon, sticking to her right side and two steps behind her, better to keep his eyes out and make sure that they had different angles covered. He hated the haste that Elyon was taking himself, he would have rather had time to study things that struck his fancy, even if it was just as simple as a cobblestone. But he knew well enough that there was safety in numbers, and the bonds of duty that kept him with the tribal woman.

"The town isn't going anywhere... I hope," Jorgen added, trying to see if Elyon would consider a more sedate pace. He wasn't breathing hard, he was pretty fit, and carrying a relatively light load. His staff wasn't being used to hold himself up, and while his legs were easily capable of the pace, he saw little value in scuttling along at full speed. Haste just asked for trouble easily avoided by taking your time after all.

Korinn kept silent, and kept her eyes on the road. She was here to do her duty as a paladin and a member of the Bloodbane clan. She was not here to talk frivolously. Besides, dangerous things could come by any minute, and she needed to be ready.

A rather large, shaggy canine walked along the road on the way in. A simple job done, it then naturally congregates to a larger city. Since it's mostly just walking, it sticks to her animal shape for now, all the better to travel in.

Elyon was a bit surprised by the Dragonborn who jumped to their rescue, and was vaguely aware of other fighters coming for a piece of the action behind her.

Well, too bad. Get your own things to kill.

Taking a step to better position herself, her sword crashed against the back of one of the kobold. Without stopping, the barbarian side-steped toward the next opponent, trying to catch him in one fell swoop.

Tyrell was enjoying the sun, pale as it was, for in the Bronzehall he could often go days without seeing it. His companions, as he had started to think of them, were quiet. He enjoyed their company though.

Coming over the crest of the road he would first hear a thundering boom, rippling across the land, it was then that he saw the skirmish happening in front of him, he would approach, spear at the ready, but remain back, not sure what was happening just yet.

"... and Drugall confronts Rothgar over the right of conquest, and while the two are fighting the woman drops Rothgar's dagger hilt deep into his thigh and flees for her life. The two of them stop their battle and chase her down, beating her senseless and dragging her back to the huts, when her father," he nodded towards the young girl who walked behind him and turned back towards Tyrell continuing his story, "sees the situation, he declares that the woman has drawn the blood of his khalisar, or guardsmen, and perhaps SHE should be protecting his life rather than these two curs. His exact words!"

The tall bronzed steppes warrior slapped his meaty thigh and a guttural laugh echoed down the road. He looked quizzically at Tyrell, concerned whether the more cultured man would find his story as amusing. He still remembered the time he spoke of the bear trap and the hunter that caused Harahhi to pout for two days. The small child tugged at the warriors sword belt, "But Qotho, what did they MEAN that they could claim the woman by right of conquest? Tell me!" Qotho's laughter stopped, and he grimaced, he turned and knelt beside the young girl, his calloused hands stroking her hair, "Wars, battles, raids are dangerous and bloody affairs. Men pay for their conquests in blood, and some men will sate those same desires in a manner that even your father, Khal Lajat, could not prevent them from doing. They are no place for young ladies ...," his voice trailed off, an embarassing look of shame washing over his face under her disapproving gaze.

She looked up at their companion, "I want to hear about the Dwarves again, and Master Mor-A-Din," she very carefully enunciated the name of the Dwarven god, out of respect for Tyrell and his belief. As she looked up to him, Qotho heard the yips bandits, and the sound of a foray against a group of travellers ahead. "Perhaps another time, stay close at my side Harahhi, and keep me between yourself and the bandits. Be brave, you are the daughter of Khal'Jhaego Lajat, and you laugh at death. HA!"

He fluffed her hair again, stood and drew his wickedly curved sabers and strode towards the fray.

Having used their brethren as fodder to size up their opponents, six more kobolds emerge from hiding. These are not the spear toting chattel that lead the charge. Four of them carry wicked looking blades about the length of their forearms and shields that seem to be made from a single dragon scale. The other two whirl slings over their heads and wear a set of ceramic urns on bandoliers.

The kobolds with slings both launch urns, one at Qotho and one at Korinn before shifting back behind their boulders.

Jorgen was rocked hard by one of the strikes, and felt his blood roaring in his mind, his orcish nature screaming to the fore now that he was injured, demanding blood in turn, wanting to rip off the skulls of those Kobolds and punt them into the sun. It was only with a struggle and mentally recalling the scriptures of Erathis that he kept his cool... relatively.

He took a cautious step backwards, leveling his arm again at the two kobolds, screaming "DIE!" at them.

For a moment, Elyon had been worried. Was that it? The first wave of kobolds had fallen in the blink of an eye, not giving enough time for even a good workout. To her satisfaction, the second wave quickly made its presence known. Between them and the random warriors that kept showing up, this was turning into a rather chaotic affair. A proper battle, then.

Perfect.

A savage grin on her face, Elyon launched herself in a running charge, passing down one of the newcomers, a black haired warrior with a tanned skin and - wait, was that a kid with him? Huh.

She did not take time to ponder the fact. Right now, something else demanded her attention. Her battlecry echoed on the battlefield, as she brought down a crushing strike on her chosen target. Unfortunately, her haste made the swing go wide.

Standard action : charge using Howling Strike
[roll0] vs AC

Qotho roared a challenge at the slinger hurled the ceramic urn through the air. The kobolds aim was true, and the pot shattered, the jagged shards cutting bright lines of pain along the steppes warrior's muscular thighs. The vile concoction contained therein covered the warrior in a sticky resin almost unbalancing. As he began to lift a leg to advance on the raider, he found he was unable to move from the spot!

Frustrated, he dropped both of his heavy blades point first into the Kings Road, bent down and took the small javelin from the kobold his initial assault had slain. Taking careful aim he hurled the kobolds own weapon at the nearest slinger.

"Die beast! If you wish to meet your makers form a line, and I will be pleased to send you to your cur of a god!"

Minor action to drop my weapons, move action to Ready a javelin, within reach on the body of the dead Kobold, Standard action to use Careful Strike. No time to Quarry this round! Attacking the Kobold directly beneath my marker, luckily Javelins are thrown weapons and so I still use my strength, [roll0], and if it hits, [roll1]. Talis Flamespeaker

Talis walks down the old road, her eyes fixed resolutely upward on the gentle dance of occasional wispy cloud. Despite the loveliness of the day, she feels uneasy, and it was more than just the way the landscape folds up on itself around the edges, the trees and mountains that make her feel hemmed-in. The wind is trying to warn her of something, but its whispering voice is just past the edge of her hearing.

She probably should have been paying more attention to her feet, because she stumbles over a protruding cobblestone and nearly falls. She catches herself and becomes suddenly aware that, not only was a battle raging on the path in front of her, but she'd nearly walked into it. Breathing deeply to center herself and clear her thoughts, she surveys the scene.

Narrowly dodging the gluepot, Korinn realized she needed to get out of range of the slingers, and in range of actually hitting them with her axe. So she targeted the closest one, and swung away. It was just too bad they were so spread out, or else she could hit them with her dragonbreath.

Moving towards the Kobold attacking Jorgen.
Using Virtuous Strike, which boosts Korinn's saves by 2 on a hit. Also using Power of the Sun to inflict Radiant Vulnerability on the Kobold (again, if it hits).

Talis takes one more deep breath and holds her arms out, muttering an incantation in her native tongue. A sudden gust of wind, festooned with leaves, blows past her and briefly settles into a little whirlwind between two of the people fighting the kobolds. From there, the whirlwind--very improbably--seems to split in two, simultaneously lifting one of the fighters into prime position for an extra blow and wafting healing magic over the flaming woman a little distance from the other combatants. Finally, it settles back into whirlwind form in the spot where it was originally created.

Okay, this got a little complicated.

Free Action: Call Spirit Companion in the square between Korinn and Qotho.
Standard Action: Spirit Infusion on Korinn. Korinn, make an MBA against that adjacent kobold with a +2 bonus to attack and +3 to damage. Talis' SC disappears.

No that is not the kobold you marked earlier, he got smoked. You missed with your attack but assuming the mark doesn't need a hit I will record it.

The kobold closest to Elyon scurries backward and then the slingers chatter at each other rapidly, they appear to be arguing about something but the dragonshield snaps at them and they shut up. Each fits an urn from their bandoliers into their sling and fires it. One streaks toward Jorgen and one toward Korinn. Then drawing a small knife one scurries around a rock to flank Elyon.

Kobold shifts away as a minor. Both launch flame pots as standards [roll0] Vs Jorgen's AC; [roll1] Vs Korinn's AC. Damage: Jorgen [roll2] plus ongoing 2 fire (save ends); Korinn [roll3] plus ongoing 2 fire (save ends). Kobolds then both take move actions to flank, the one on the left takes a minor action to draw its dagger.

Jorgen Wildrunner - Fluff Post Related to above attack

Jorgen saw the pot coming in at him, and taking up his staff in a two handed swing, knocked it clear out of the air, showering sparks through the air harmlessly, and dragging the end of his staff through the dirt to smother the flames on the end of it. "No." He said flatly, looking at the kobold who dared to even try.

Talis closes her eyes and makes a small motion with her fingers. Her conjured whirlwind blows over to the red-haired woman who's surrounded by kobolds. Some of the dry leaves caught up in the wind start on fire when they come into contact with the flaming barbarian, which distracts a kobold for an instant, enough to leave it open for an attack. The whirlwind dies down, leaving a few smoldering leaves on the road, but quickly reappears back where it started.

Elyon was still in the middle of trying to hack one of the slingers in two when she heard a whisper. The voice was old, evoking images of days long forgotten, before civilization started to spread on this earth. It spoke of Life. And it spoke of War. The northern girl wasn't sure of what she was experiencing, but there was one lesson the elders of her tribe managed to teach : one does not ignore a primal spirit without consequences.

Trusting in this new presence, Elyon let her arm be guided, her sword slashing the air faster than she had thought possible.

Elyon's wounds were severe. A nasty sword strike had slashed open her shoulder, and the pain caused by the fire gradually worsened. Nonetheless, her grin never left her face.

"Come on, let's see who can kill the other first, shall we?"

The kobold didn't seem to understand, but any answer he could have come up with was cut short by a wave of ice magic. That one Elyon knew to be Jurgen's trick. Not giving time to the small creature to recover, she rushed him, her sword rising and falling once again.

Tyrell blinked, taking a second or two to process the end of hostility, his first real combat. Walking over to Qotho, he would make sure his companion and his charge were alright, before walking upwind of the combat, the smell of blood and entrails suddenly all too clear in his sense. In his mind, the image of the Kobold, holding it's own guts, was replaying over and over.

He then bent over and was noisily sick. Leaving this mornings breakfast on the grass. He winced, only just noticing the blood flowing from his scalp, where the slingstone had struck, he would begin to bandage his head, to staunch the flow. Once that was done, he would pull out his waterskin and swill his mouth, spitting a mouthful out before drinking deeply.

Elyon took a deep breath, letting the battle tension flow out.

"Eh, nice one. Jurgen, you okay?"

Somehow, one could think the question should be asked to her. While most of her wounds were healed thanks to divine magic, she was still covered in blood, her own and her ennemies, and sporting burned patchs of skin. If she had to guess, those ones were going to hurt tonight. She was still sporting a cut on her forearm, that she quickly covered with a makeshift bandage. Her attention was then on cleaning her sword, before the blood ruined its edge further. For the rest, she'd do her best, but a bath will certainly be needed in order to clean up properly.

"So, you guys wanted a piece of the action too? Not bad."

Taking notice of the cleric's troubles - the same one she suspected she had to thanks for healing most of her wounds during the battle - she came over him, patting him on the back with probably more strenght than intended.

"First battle, huh? Don't worry, it gets easier."

Jorgen Wildrunner had two cuts on him, bloodied clothing, but he seemed perfectly fine as he answered Elyon. "Just barely enough to get the blood pumping. Though we did seem to function as an effective unit. Truly an example of disparate people united in glory." He smiled, a disturbing expression to most considering his orcish features, kneeling amid the blood of Kobolds and Dragonshields, taking out the holy symbol of Erathis that he carried. He offered a short prayer while people were resting, refocusing his mind and offering this victory against ruthless brigades to the Goddess of Civilization. Today the roads were safer, and with that another incremental step on the way to uniting the world in shining light once more.

When his devotions to the goddess were finished, he stowed his holy symbol once more, keeping it close to his heart where it belonged. "We should repurpose what we can of the fallen's gear. It's only fitting that the spoils of thieves end up serving those who spread the Light," he said aloud to anyone who was close enough to seem to bother listening, already going among the bodies, poking and prodding them with his staff to see if there was anything serviceable among them.

Taking a Short Rest. Looting bodies. Let me know if you want me to throw a check for anything like Religion to devote the battle to Erathis for some reason, or to check for loot.

Tyrell would stand again, feeling a bit sheepish, but would offer his hand to the woman in front of him in friendship.

"My name is Tyrell, Of the Bronzehall, I thank you, but I'm not sure if I ever want to feel easy about taking a life, it is not the way of Moradin. People and creatures of all kinds should be able to return to the stone, beneath their ancestors, not find themselves being looted on a highway, regardless of who they were."

He sighed, remember that as his Father warned, these were not the simple corridors of the Bronzehall. Still, he felt pity for any creatures desperate enough to attack when the odds were so clearly stacked against them. He would start to move the bodies to the side, holding his breath and his guts for now. If they hadn't been searched he would dutifully leave their gear to the side but leave their dignity in tact as best he could. At last, when all the bodies were lain out, he would stop and utter a short prayer* in Dwarfish, from the Iron Book of Repentance.

"All-Father under the Mountain, may you lead these lost souls back to the hearth, may you forgive them their misdeeds, and allow them rest beneath the stone. May they be past by their ancestors high aloft, and find peace within the quiet."

Qotho stalked up behind Tyrell as he intoned a prayer in the deep bass of the Dwarven tongue, though unfamiliar to his ear, he could hear the sincerity and respect in the passage. He clapped a calloused hand on the smaller man's shoulder, "Far too kind Tyrell, my people would have lopped their skulls from their skinny little necks and left them atop their javelins as a warning to thieves and murderers."

He walked over to one of the corpses that he had impaled on his own spear, and with casual disregard planted a boot withdrawing the spear, he then walked several yards to a small log and took a seat, patting the grass beside him. Harahhi looked at him cautiously, but stayed beside Tyrell's side. He shrugged and surveyed the others as he withdrew oil, rags and a whetstone and began removing the nicks and burrs from his blades. "Qotho, warrior of the Jhaego to the south, warrior of the Howling Jackal clan. This," he lifted a bronzed arm to indicate the diminuitive young girl, "is my ward, Harahhi."

The young girl heard her name, and looked from the carnage of the battlefield to the others, perhaps seven years old, her jaw was set definatly, showing a firm control over her childish fear, "Greetings, as my champion has said, I am Harahhi, heir to the Khal'Jhaego and queen of my people." She nodded curtly, and then in a flash the defiance and the regal bearing faded, and she was a child again running towards Qotho, wrapping her arms around his massive chest as tears sprung to her eyes.

"Shhhh, you did well my queen. A fierce skirmish it was, and your first, but we are no worse off for it, and you showed strength of spirit that men twice your age would envy." He gently stroked her hair as he soothed her, keeping a wary eye on his new companions.

"Well, the name's Elyon, of the Wolves of Winter. Well, not that I'm really welcome here anymore, but hey, stuff happened. The tough guy here" she pointed at the wizard half orc, still busy looking at the corpses "is Jorgen."

She took a good look at all the newcomers. A disparate bunch, that was for sure, but she was hardly in a position to criticize. At least they seemed to be able t handle themselves. Well, maybe the cleric was a little squeamish, but at least he managed to hold it together until the end of the battle, that had to count for something. And that guy from the south and the dragonborn looked quite sturdy, she could work with that.

Taking one javelin Jorgen had salvaged, she tested its balance. The shaft, made for kobolds, was a bit small, but the weapon might prove useful. Sometimes, opponents were cowardly enough to try to keep their distance, after all.

If that's okay with everyone, Elyon will take two javelins (if we're in a combat where more are needed, something went horribly wrong). "These will do for you, my queen. At least until we reach our destination, then perhaps a bath, and some oils for your hair." He barked a deep bark, "Or soon you'll have rats nesting there!"

Quickly the young girl threw her hands to her tangled hair, her face aghast. "R-r-really?"

A wide grin fell across the southerner's face, "A jest young one, you must learn to have thicker hide than that, if you are to be my queen."

She pouted a thumped a fist into his thigh. "Ha! My queen is fiercer than these raiders ever were!" He turned to face the other's, "Well met companions, we travel to Winterhaven, and would be honored to share the road should your paths take you in the same direction."

The young woman could only shrugs at the elf's question.

"Beats me. We walked, they attacked, we killed them. They didn't care to explain themselves, and I didn't bother to ask."

Elyon had now wiped most of the blood of her. The rest would have to wait until a chance for a bath presented itself. For now, she simply hoped they could reach Winterhaven before the night.

"As for why we're all here, dunno either. Anyway, i don't intend to make a camp here, so I believe we'll be going. You guys are coming?"

With a shy look around at the assembled adventures she pulls on Qotho's hand and whispers loudly up at the warrior, "Will you teach me to use this?"

Qotho looked at the young girl, knelt beside her and turned her around, and straightened her armor, adjusting the leather thongs and buckles that secured it to her frame, "You will first become accustomed to your protection, you will wear it as we travel, it will chafe, it will cause blisters, it will be uncomfortable, but in time you will develop muscles, and endurance and it will seem as a second skin. That's where you'll start my queen."

He stood up, looked down at her slight pout, "But keep the sword, there may be time for that on the road as well. Continue your lessons with Tyrell, you have the opportunity to learn of the world beyond the steppes, do so, you have always been smarter than your champion, learn of the other roads you might walk before you choose to walk the warrior's path." He ruffled her tangled hair with affection, and turned to the fiery haired warrior, "Elyon you said? Well met, Qotho," he held fist over his chest and inclined his head slightly as to a sister in arms, "you speak wisely there is still light of day, we would be honored to share your company on the road."

Elyon nodded in response to the greeting of the tanned warrior, taking a quick glance to appraise him.

"Same. You look like the kind of guy I wouldn't mind guarding my back in a fight. Nice swordplay back there."

She half-hesitated to ask about the kid, before deciding not to. It wasn't really important right now, and there would be time for that later. Plus, given the size of the newly formed traveling group, if she asked for everyone's life stories, she'd end up forgetting it all or mixing it up. For all she knew, they'd all go on their merry way once they reached Winterhaven. Still, meeting new faces wasn't unpleasant. Jorgen was a rather good travelling companion, but their different outlooks on life usually got in the way of any long exchange.

"So, from the South, eh? Never went there. Maybe I should try it one day, people there look interesting, if you and the kid are anything to go by."

In fact, most of the present company could be described as 'colorful'.

Talis has been crouching quietly on the road, trying to get her words in order and watching the pattern of leaves fluttering in the breeze. The immediate danger has passed, but she still carries the uneasiness that has been with her since she entered this vale. Still, the way the leaves catch around the others' feet seems trustworthy. She straightens up, not bothering to shake the dust from her cloak.

"Would you be bothered if I followed along as well?" she asks, directing her question primarily towards Elyon. "I have been traveling alone for a long time, and it would be pleasant to have companions again. My name is Talis." She smiles without showing her teeth.

Though I do miss the blood oranges and the kaf! An innkeeper tried to sell me boiled grass trimmings as tea, I nearly throttled him!" He clapped a heavy hand on the woman's shoulder as he laughed at the memory.

Truth be told, she didn't know if that was his only reason to come along, and she hadn't thought to ask. It didn't really matter anyway, his help was appreciated nonetheless. The nine travelers, having divided up the spoils of their victory, continue onward towards their destination. They travel west down the King's Road for most of the day until at long last they reach the vale that holds the walled town of Winterhaven. The village itself sits atop a broad hill, its weather worn crenelations overlooking a well worn section of the ancient highway. To the north soar the Cairngorm Peaks and all around the valley are thick woods filled with the colors of the season.

The land immediately surrounding the town has been cleared and is dotted with small thatched homes, single family dwellings, each fronting a parcel of farmland. Harvest is in full swing and even as the sun sinks toward the trees every field is filled with peasants working hard to bring in their crops.

The rest of the trip ended peacefully, though Elyon had to admit, things had become more lively with all the newcomers. At least, she felt relatively sure she could name them all now, which was something. But with Winterhaven now in sight, the young woman was reminded of the reasons of her presence here. Two guards, humans holding spears and wearing cheap armors, stand on either side of a wide wooden gate flanked by high watch towers. They seems friendly enough, nodding and giving polite smiles to the cluster of adventurers.

The first building past the gate is a long two story wooden affair. One of the narrow sides sits flush with an interior wall and windows line the long side facing the gate. Hanging from the remaining narrow side is a wooden sign painted with a picture of a frothing tankard. Above the tankard in flowing script is the word Wrafton's.

Inside, the common room is large, well lit, and warmed by a roaring fire. It is still early in that there is still light outside so there are only about half a dozen townsfolk sitting on various stools and chairs. A human woman smiles and waves a towel from behind a well polished bar. "Have a seat. I'll be with you in just a minute."

While most of the others had stayed behind, Elyon had entered the inn, intending on finding answers. Following the barmaid instruction, she took a seat, keeping an eye on the rest of the patrons. She was not particularly patient by nature, but she had learned enough to know that barging in a new place and demanding answers usually was counter-productive. Her occasion came during her order. After asking for roasted lamb and hydromel, and preparing to pay, Elyon took the opportunity to ask a few questions.

Inside the Inn, the woman smiles whistles through her teeth and a girl appears from the kitchen. She takes Elyon's order and when she leaves the other lady walks over. It took Elyon all her willpower to not scowl at the use of past tense by the woman. But more than that, she felt angry at herself. She only now realized what Douven had meant to her, and only realizing you had a friend when he was in danger, perhaps already dead? It... well, it sucked.

Qotho was taken aback as the muscular smith was able to identify the lands of his birth. "Master Dwarf, I am Qotho of the Howling Jackal Tribe, and this is Khal'Jhaego Harahhi. An ill wind has befallen Khal'Jhaego Lajat so he sent me north with his daughter, so the same fate would not befall her." He bowed to, whom he could only assume was Coalstriker.

He did smile though, "If you know of my people, you know we do not barter. I have arms and armor, procured from kobold raiders a half days east of here. All I ask is a fair price Master Dwarf, and with respects, I am sure we can do further trade, for once we receive Lord Padriag's blessing, we shall be ensuring the safety of travelers along the Kings Road from these and their kin."

With that he dropped the satchel of spoils on the work bench for the Smith to examine.

As a reminder the approximate value of the spoils are 57g and some silver. But Qotho isn't going to risk insulting the locals with haggling, it just isn't his thing, Qotho will accept any offer, but anything less than 40gp he'd find insulting and probably take his business elsewhere in future.

"How wonderful," he says to Qotho. "Thair Coalstriker, at your service. Let's take a look at what you brought me." The dwarf digs through the satchel pulling out the weapons and examining each one closely.

Finishing his examination of the contents of the satchel he addresses himself to Qotho, "I'll take the swords, the spears, the javelins, and the shields and I'll give you twenty-five gold for the lot, the rest is of no use to me; however, I imagine that Bairwin," he points to the wooden building across the road, "will give you a fair deal for it."

"No matter, I am not one for stories and beer that resembles water. As for winning Padriag's favor, he is an easy man. As long as he believes that your presence will do his town more good than harm you will have no troubles with him." Turning Thair goes into his smithy and is hidden by the smoke and glow of the forge for a moment. "Catch!" he calls out and a small pouch comes sailing through the air at Qotho. Coming back out Thair looks at Qotho, "Padriag uses his own coin to fund the town, same coin that his father used, which in turn was the same coin his father used. Even human generations can go back a long ways if you have enough of them." Standing up straight and bowing deeply to Harahhi again Thair says in dwarvish, "Tak natu yenet."Traditional dwarven farewell, "Until the stones return us to each other" Harahhi returns the phrase carefully pronouncing all of the syllables. Talis, Jorgen, Kanska, and Havelock, along with a large group of peasants, wander into the tavern in the growing dark. Jorgen takes a seat next to Elyon and Korinn. Talis, Kanska, and Havelock each take separate places at the bar. Suddenly there is a commotion at the door and an old man is practically dragged in by half a dozen excited children. They lead him over to a corner and all chatter loudly at him. Throwing up his hands in mock terror he shouts over all of them "ENOUGH!" The barkeep rolls her eyes and wanders across the room. After a brief discussion all of the children pull a long bench over to the corner and pile onto it. Shortly food is brought to the old man and he begins his dinner.

As the sun sets pairs of guardsmen light the lanterns that hang from poles beside the roads. Across the road from the smithy is Bairwin's Grand Shoppe. A bright light burns inside illuminating two large multipane windows. The trio crosses the road over to the storeand Harahhi punches Qotho in the side of the leg for his renewed teasing about her hair but she says nothing. Her thin frame trembles in the fading light as the night takes on a distinct chill.

Elyon stopped her conversation when she saw the old man enter the inn. If she was a betting girl - and she definitely was - the guy was probably Eilian. Hopefully, he'd be able to point her in the right direction. It took a conscious effort to not immediately barge in and demand answers, but while the barbarian was not particularly tactfull, she still could respect the need to let someone finish a meal. In her old tribe, trying to interrupt such a time was just asking for troubles, after all.

As soon as the man had finished cleaning up his plate, Elyon made her move.

"Hey, you're Eilian? I'm a friend of Douven, heard you saw him not long ago. Do you know where he went?"

About Town

Qotho noticed Harahhi shiver in the cool night air, he knelt beside her and drew her cloak tighter about her. "You need to keep warm my Khal." He looked up to Tyrell, "Perhaps our friend can bring you to the Tavern, and find some warm food and drink for your belly while I conclude the barter of our spoils. We can then find you a warm bed, and bath."

The Smith had given him a pouch with 25 Crowns, he withdrew four of those and handed the remainder to Tyrell, "If you see the other's we met on the King's Road, three Crowns would be their share of the spoils, yourself included. I kept an extra Crown for Harahhi, and our lodging this night."

With that he shouldered his lightened load, and turned towards the double paned window, and opened the door and wandered into the interior of Bairwin's Grand Shoppe. "Ho! Merchant, if you are open, I have spoils with which to trade for both goods and coin!"

Tyrell would laugh and reassure his companion. ""It is just a Traditional farewell, the nearest translation is 'Until we meet again.' It is good, my friend, it means he respects Harrahi and her learning enough to respect her in our own tongue."

Tyrell would stop and decline the money, pressing it back into his friend's hand as Qotho carried on towards the Traders. "Qotho my friend, I am sorry, but I have some personal business to attend to this eve, and would appreciate it if I could meet you at the Inn shortly. When you enter the Inn, I would suggest inquiring after a bath for Harrahi, if we are to meet the Lord Padriag."

With that he would turn back to the Smithy, and approach the door, knocking, before calling out in the tongue he had learnt since he was a babe, his throat long since used to the Dwarven tongue, it lacked the harshness of other Men's efforts. "Vemu Samman, gajut men, Men rune men bedorn men Xoth Burm murmelings. Men Xoth sonn Khuzud. Men gajamu Rhasput ogamut Men...

The bench seat erupts in a chorus of whines and jeers. One of the oldest children, about eight says, "Hey lady, we were here first. Old man Eilian promised us a story!"
Eilian waves his hands around at the children, sputters at them, and give a mock scowl, "Where are your manners? This woman is a guest in our town now be polite!" Turning to Elyon, amid a a few sheepish apologies, and asks,"You knew Douven? I haven't actually seen him in a few weeks, been wondering what happened to him. Anyways, he had questions about the old burial site southwest of town, though there might be some dragon bones there. I told him it was just a trash heap but he wouldn't hear of it, no ma'am. So of course I gave him directions and then he disappeared and hasn't been seen since. How did you say you knew Douven?"

A very fat man, no taller than Thair but obviously human trundles out from the back of the shop. He is dressed in loud gaudy silks and wears several rings on each finger. Clean shaven with close cropped hair he smiles at Qotho with a wide toothy grin, "No merchant that deserves the title would ever turn away such an offer!" Taking a quick look up and down Qotho he says, "You know I traveled the world far and wide before settling down to serve this town as its chief merchant, but I cannot place one like you, master....?"

Since those present, all two of them, both speak dwarvish let's assume that they are doing so and type in plain english."No forgiveness is required if no offense is given Master Bronzehall," Thair says putting a strange emphasis on Tyrell's name. "I have no trouble accepting you as a dwarf. I am more open minded than most of our people. But I have no further wish to mince words. It is late and I have work to do, so unless you have business, please, leave me be."

Qotho smiled, nodded at the short merchant, "I am Qotho, a jhaego of the Howling Jackal tribe far to the south. He unslung the bundle on the counter as he began to browse the various wares of the shop, looking for scented oils, and a comb of some quality.

He looked down to Harahhi, "We'll soon return to the inn my Khal, and from there a warm bath and food for your belly! I can hear it growling like a rabid wolf from here." He looked up to the merchant, "As I told Master Thair, there is no reason to haggle over price, offer what is fair, and should we have the good fortune to come into further spoils, I will be sure to deliver them to your care in person."

This time, Elyon really did wince. Again with the past tense! Was she the only one believing the old hunter could still be alive? Nonetheless, she was grateful for the information. Now, she had a clear direction.

"Yeah, he helped me out of a bad spot a year ago. I simply hope I can return the favor."

Inwardly, she knew the odds weren't good. No news for a few weeks were cause for alarm, otherwise she wouldn't be here. Still, if someone could manage it, it was the old coot. He did teach her to survive in the wilderness, after all.

Man, if it turns out he was alright the whole time and just forgot to send word, I'm going to be mad.

It was probably too late to leave right now, meaning she'll have to spend the night here. Another few hours wasted. Taking a deep breath, she tried to offer a smiling face to the small army of kids around her.

"Sorry for borrowing your storyteller, you can have him back. Stay safe."

Jorgen Wildrunner - Still Max HP, Only Down one Healing Surge

Well now, his big, orc ears were listening sharply at what happened at the inn. A scholar of some sort, a local historian. And ruins to the south, supposedly with "Dragon Bones". An old hold of Nerath, and perhaps now infested by Kobolds he reasoned, considering the recent Kobold Attacks the town guard had spoken of, the missing hunter, and the details about the ruins.

It seemed logical enough to him.

He waved Elyon back over from the Storyteller, letting the man get on with telling the kids some random story from the distant past. He was paying rapt attention himself, legends were a part of living history after all, and many of them did tend to hold at least half truths to the past, it was worth not dismissing them entirely just because it was a children's tale.

When Elyon got back, he gave the barbarian a nod, "I'm planning an expedition to the ruins around Winterhaven myself. If you wish to consider still traveling with together, we can make that ruin our first destination, looking for your friend, while I catalogue the location. I imagine there will be more Kobolds there."

At the children's urging Eilian launches into a tale of heroes and dragons. He is clearly somewhere in the middle of it, apparently this is a nightly past time for him and the children.

An elf woman enters the tavern. She wears a heavy green cloak drawn tightly around her but with the hood down. She goes to the bar, sits alone, and orders a drink.

A few minutes later a middle aged man, powerfully built, pushes the door open. He walks in a takes a seat at an empty table. Each group of villagers he passes doff their hats and nod to him or touch their brows as a sign of respect. Once he is seated a few villages wander over and exchange small talk for a few minutes before returning to their own seats.

Bairwin sorts through the collected gear of the kobolds. He lets out a small gasp at the urn and handles it very carefully. While he does so Qotho is able to find a simple wooden hair brush, marked for a raven, that will suit Harahhi's needs. He also finds several perfumes and oils but they are quite expensive. The cheapest among them is two crowns an ounce.

After a few minutes Bairwin calls from the front of the store, "Master Qotho." When Qotho returns to the counter Bairwin smiles and waves his hands over the merchandise. "Shall we say thirty-two crowns?"

Qotho pondered for a moment, thirty-two crowns from the merchant, twenty-four crowns from the smith, split between the eight companions would amount to seven crowns each. He dropped the comb and a one ounce vial of the scented oil on the counter. "More than reasonable Master Bairwin, though I will be buying these for Khal'Harahhi. As I said, once we conclude our patrol of the area around Winterhaven for Lord Padriag we may well be concluding a more sizable transaction for your shoppe." With Harahhi assistance he was able to count out, and separate the shares of the profit, deducting the cost of comb and oil from his own. With relatively little circling back, Qotho was able to find Wrafton's. He strode in, noticed a collection of young children seated by the hearth at the knees of what appeared a story teller. He smiled at Harahhi, even as she tugged his hand, "Yes my Khal, please make yourself comfortable by the fire and listen to your elders tales. I will secure food, lodging and a bath for you."

As she scampered off in her ill fitting armor, he walked boldly to the bar that ran the length of the tavern hall, picked out his comrades from earlier he smiled. Following Salvana's directions, the temple is easy enough to find. It is a well worked stone affair with a shingled roof and sturdy wooden doors. Candle light burns in the two narrow arches that flank the main entrance. Sculpted in bas relief over the doorway are three waves, the symbol of Avandra.

The are a dozen simple wooden pews split by a center aisle leading to the stone steps topped by a dais and a pulpit. Behind these are three alcoves each with its own rack of candles in front of a small statue. Kneeling before the altar is a woman in a simple brown robe. Jorgen Wildrunner - At the Inn

Jorgen shrugged at the mention of debts owed. It was the nature of life after all, and while he didn't care that much about the accumulation of wealth and favors, he also didn't really feel like fighting the system either.

For a few moments he seemed lost in thought, contemplating the grain of the wood in the inn's floorboards, puzzling over something, his half blood tusks chewing a bit on his lip as he seemed to be considering something. Finally his hand patted at his coin pouch, hearing the clink there. Using his staff to lever himself up, he walked over towards where Qotho was talking to the innkeeper. Remaining silent, hands on his staff, waiting for his turn, he spoke up only when Qotho and Salvana were finished.

"I'd like to procure a room, and three meals ready for travel, if you please," perhaps an odd request, since most people seemed ready to sit down for the night here, but he had an odd thought in mind, and if Salvana looked like she would question it, "I wanted to bring a warm meal to the gate guards." It was that simple. A small kindness towards those that kept the city safe from the dangers of the wilds. If he was operating here long term, it would be good as well to make sure that they knew Jorgen as a cultured, and respected, civilized man, rather than some frothing mad beserker, beating things to a pulp with his crude stick. It at the very least might help him not appear to be some rowdy traveler who was going to cause trouble either.

Of course he also considered it might make him seem suspicious, currying favor. But he guessed that warm food on a cold night would counter natural suspicion of favors.

He tossed a small pouch of coin towards the Innkeep, "For the rooms, the meal and the bath for the child. With my thanks." He then turned his broad shoulders and walked towards the young warrior he had shed blood with on the Kings Road, several of the other's seemed to be gathered at her table as well, "Elyon was it?" He slid a chair out from under the table, and dropped heavily into it, he took out several small purses and tossed them to the companions from the Road. The wind blows strongly plucking at clothing and hair with icy fingers. It whistles loudly through the buildings of the town, causing the lanterns to dance wildly on their poles and their flames to flicker madly. A pair of guardsmen huddle in the arch under the gate trying desperately to stay warm using a small fire tucked away an alcove leading to a set of stairs. The gates are barred and the portcullis is down. As he drew closer, he held up the bundle, calling out to them, "Fresh food, just from the Inn minutes ago," towards them.

He makes appreciative noises as he wolfs down the pie. His companion is slightly older and a little more wary. Keeping a careful eye on Jorgen he sets his pie politely to the side and addresses himself to the wizard, "And what prompts such kindness from a traveler?" he asks.

Taking up the pie in hand, a bite missing now, he replied. "The Goddess guides me, and asks I help those who safeguard her peoples." His voice was solemn, giving a nod, before taking another bite.

He looked over to the less suspicious guard, and asked, "Do you mind if I..." and pointed to his glowing staff and waggled his fingers a bit. He showed what he was doing, his fingers making a small gesture towards his own boots. "Nice and toasty. I imagine your feet are cold, standing around out here." It was just a simple little prestidigitation, but still, small comforts, warm socks to ward off the cold. If they showed signs of wanting to heat up, he'd hit them with the cantrip as well, keeping their feet nice and toasty.

I was a young warrior, of a small clan, but given a great honor to ride with her father, Khal'Jhaego, his Khal included over ten thousand warriors, and he chose me as one of his personal warriors, of his blood." He paused, took a sip of his mead as he continued, his eyes unfocused looking to his past, "The beastmen of the steppes had raided my Khal's tents while we were at war, and taken from him that which he held most dear, his bride, and his child. He came to me, knowing that the other warriors would see his sentiment as weak, he entrusted their care to me, but he could spare no other warriors. And so it was I found their lair, and stole deep within it, only to find his bride, desecrated by their unnatural savagery, with her dying breath she begged me, a simple warrior with recovering her daughter. So I did, and in the ensuing pursuit, I earned this," he touched the scar that ran over his eye and down his cheek, "a reminder of the small good that I have done in the world."

He barked a laugh, and drained the rest of his cup, "Failure is not taken kindly by the jhaego, it is a sign of weakness. I had been tasked with returning the Khal's bride, and his daughter, and yet returned only with his daughter. So I was to be killed, my weakness culled from Khal'Jhaego. If not for her pleas to her father, I would have died that night. Instead, he came to me, told me to flee north, to protect Harahhi with my life. And so I do. THAT my friend, is the story."

"That's stupid."

Elyon's reaction to Qotho's story was blunt, to say the least.

"Way I see it, you didn't fail at all. Sometimes, bad things happen, that's just how things are. You still managed to save the kid."

Not only did those guys do nothing to save their own clansmen, they banished the one who actually gave a damn, and apparently some of them went as far as trying to kill them? Elyon could admit she was a rather selfish person, but that tale did manage to severely annoy her.

He smiled at Tyrell, eager to be done with the story, "That is true my friend, but perhaps that tale best be saved for another night?" As Elyon commented though, Qotho turned and smiled, almost sadly, "Life on the steppes is harsh, violent, and brutal. It is beautiful too, and endless sea of stars above your head, the singing of the shifting sands at night, the feel of a steed between your thighs as you fly over the rocks and the sand. I ask that you not judge them over harsh, while you may find their ways savage, their ways allow them to survive the lands of my birth."

He took another drink of mead, "These are stories left in the past, we have yet to write a new story, would you accompany me to speak with that man," he pointed at the table where a middle aged man was sipping from a flagon, "on good accounts that is Lord Padriag, and I would offer our services in clearing his roads for him. "You've encountered the kobolds that have turned the King's Road into their personal hunting grounds," he says evenly reading Qotho's response like a gambler judging an opponent. "Those beasts vex me sorely, yet the villagers refuse to recognize the seriousness of the problem. Attacks are growing more frequent and yes, it is interrupting trade, among other things. You at least, Master Qotho, seem unhurt and capable of handling yourself. If your companions are of the same caliber, I don't suppose you'd be interested in taking a commission from me? Qotho strokes his beard and considers the lord's offer. "I believe that we have found a mutual solution to our problems Lord Padriag."

"Mutual?" the noble returns raising an eyebrow.

"I am Jhego out of the south." Qotho explains. "I travel with my ward, Harahhi and we have sought out your town specifically for certain, traits it possesses. It is secluded and it is far from those who would wish us harm. If you would extend to her, as a queen in exile, the protection of your walls, my companions and I will, in return, remove your kobold problem."

Padriag leans back in his chair, studying Qotho, Harahhi, and the other adventurers. He takes a long pull on his mead before nodding to the warrior. "Aye, I will shelter you and your charge. I offer you and your companions fifty gold pieces each plus rights of salvage to the beast's warrens in exchange for your services."

Qotho extends his hand and the two men shake on their pact. Padriag tells Qotho that he believe the beasts are living somewhere on the northwest edge of the Gardbury Downs. Returning to the table Qotho share this information and the terms of the contract with his fellows. He also suggests that everybody get a good night's sleep so that they can start bright and early in the morning.

Tyrell would be up before the Cockerel, as was his way. Quietly packing his things and leaving his bunk made he went downstairs and stoked the fire back into a decent flame. There he would kneel and say his prayers to Moradin. His voice soft and almost flowing over the often guttural Dwarfish prayer.

Once his prayers were done he would stand up and sit at a nearby table either chatting to the owners, if they were up, or sitting there in quiet contemplation.

Tyrell smiles and shrugs at Salvana's response. Feeling better for the company.

"It's just my way Ma'am, in the Bronzehall you could go for days without seeing the sun. As such it has never ruled much over my timekeeping. The forge-fires offered more heat and comfort. If I may, a mug of ale and some fresh bread would be very much appreciated. If the chickens have been kind, maybe a hard boiled egg?"

Before the others came down Tyrell would shrug and answer Salvana's query.

"While I am not a Dwarf, I was raised by them, and have adopted some of their ways. In the mines water can often be stagnant and poor quality, not even suited for dunking hot metal into. Ale is a safer bet to greet the day, if you want to see the end of it. As for special, I guess so, I was found by the priests of the All-Father as a babe, and raised by them, as such pledging my life to the God that deemed me important."

By this time he had been joined by Korrin and Elyon, he would greet them as breakfast is brought to them.

"Morning both, how does this day find you?"

Having visited Winterhaven and spoken with several of its inhabitants, the party of adventurers, much reduced from the original motley band that met on the King's Road, strikes out south in search of Douven Staul, a wayward friend of one of the heroes. The party has a general set of directions to what Douven seems to believe is the site of a dragon burial mound.

Following a series of smaller roads towards their destination, the party is about an hour's walk from town when they come upon a small graveyard of sorts near a bend in the road. Revealed from behind a copse of trees, standing in the middle of the path, is a man of the southern steppes. Bronzed, like Qotho, he speaks the trade tongue with a heavy accent and a rhythmic thrum, both artifacts of his heritage. "Did you think we would not find you, Sul'Adras?" He asks laying a hand on the hilt of his sword. A biting autumn wind whistles around the bend, plucking at the man's cloak and the causing the dust of the road to swirl around his legs.

Qotho jerks his scimitars free of his belt. "Harahhi, stay close!" he barks. The small girl fumbles with her short sword, dropping it in the dirt and scrambling to pick it up. Harsh laughter out of the surrounding woods echoes off the hills, Qotho's words cut it short, "Leave now and I will forget you came here. If you do the same and you may live." Settling into a ready stance with one blade held high and back, curving downward over his head, and the other low, out in front of himself, Qotho's next words chill the blood more than the icy wind, "Stay, and I will see you all dead."

The man in the center of the road staggers from Havelock's bolt but with a feral snarl he lunges at the injured Qotho who raises his blades to protect himself. The two are a furious storm of steel, sparks, and flesh each lunging, slicing, feinting and parrying with murder in their eyes. Qotho is skilled and ferocious in defense of his princess but he is losing blood and having trouble breathing. The newcomer quickly gain the advantage when suddenly Harahhi darts around Qotho's leg and stabs his opponent in the side of his knee causing the man to cry out and lose his balance.

Kanska's chain flies out and tears into her opponent but just barely misses it's mark sinking into the man's chest rather than his throat. Kanska barely manages to dodge the blows aimed her way. The first was off by a good portion, but she barely twists out of the second. And with close for comfort being a bit to close for her liking, she resorts to the classic technique she's learned for such situations: Stab someone who isn't paying close enough attention, then run like heck. Okay so now the big question, do we:
