View Full Version : OOTS Showdown - The Feedback round

This week, OOTS Showdown #2 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35046) has come to an end. After 49 rounds, Alarra emerged victorious, defeating Beta and evnafets in a narrow endgame. Now it shall be time to evaluate the round and look for improvements. In order to gain a maximum of information, I've devised this.

Below, I'll put in a structured feedback questionnaire with specific questions. I would like to have a large number of opinions and while I am glad about any feedback, sorting it into these categories will help me get an idea of your opinion. Also...answering the questionnaire might give you a small advantage when the characters for OOTS Showdown #3 are distributed. You don't need to write an epic or answer each and every question - but still I would like at least some words from you.

Mods: Can you please send this topic to Structured Games? I believe it is placed better there.

Oh, and you might want to take a look at The list of characters (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35644)

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2? Yes

1a) If yes, which character did you play? Demon Roaches

1b) Were you satisfied with the possibilities of your character? Frankly, no.

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already? Yes

2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones? I can't think of any specifically.

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones? I don't think so.

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why? No, they're fine.

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex? Rather simple.

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered? Xykon's phylactery ability. Also, there should be a limit on how many centipedes Pompey can have at a time.

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered? Can't think of any.

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise? I actually think you got the flavor down pretty well for most of them.

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game? Usurpation was a good one. Too bad I didn't get to use it.

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit? There should be more abilities based on alliances that the characters naturally have.

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important? Balanced power.

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why? Xykon with his phylactery as written was overpowered.

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why? Demon Roaches.

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why? None I can think of.

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed? Sabine

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how? Demon Roaches. One more active ability and one less passive ability ought to do it.

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu

5b) The character distribution process

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities

They're all good.

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions? Nope.

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round? Assuming you mean something like the RAF Hall of Fame: Best Initiative Rolls, Worst Initiative Rolls, Feuds (Between Players), Feuds (Between Characters), Allies (Between Players), Allies (Between Characters), Most Hostile, Most Passive, Most Helpful, First to Die, Most Targeted, Least Targeted.

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2?
Yes

1a) If yes, which character did you play?
Pompey

1b) Were you satisfied with the possibilities of your character?
As you know, Pompey was well down on my list of choices. He ended up doing better than I expected, mainly due to the Linear guild alliance.
In the end I was very satisfied with him.

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already?
Yes. Oh yes. And everybody's abilities.

2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones?
Possibly the one about people having to announce their actions. Nobody chose any actions that used that. I'm not sure any people ever would :-)

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones?
-

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why?
They are all quite clear to me.

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
Simple is fine. Its the combinations with other characters that grants the complexity.

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
Xykon's Phylactory - He came back too many times.
Sabine - Tactical Escape - I think the damage boundary needs to be higher.
Heal??? - 4HP of healing is quite a lot in the scheme of things. Also Hilgya can heal herself where Durkon can't.

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
Pompey: Guard Hostage There aren't that many abilities that last more than one round (A couple of lost action abilities, a couple of lasting damage). Extending it for one round doesn't do much when other actions have a direct effect. Maybe needs an enhancement?
V/Durkon/Hilgya: Dispel Magic/Remove Curse: Symbol of pain is pretty much the only long term effect worth removing.
Roy: Don the belt. Whoop de doo - Change gender. Why bother? Give some incentive to take this action - eg Change gender and all attacks from Males are at -1 damage (you hot thing you)
Samantha: Capture handsome guys. Ok, so it takes someone out for a round but it also protects them? Why would I do that?
Nale's "Bond Villain" and Durkon's "Heavy Armour". Maybe they need to be changed/enhanced? If I'm going to tell everybody exactly what I'm doing I BETTER get something good for it.

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
-
3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
Cease and Desist was annoying :-)
Samantha/Trigak's breath attacks caused mass carnage :-)

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?

-
4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
Balanced power. Flavor is good, but not at the expense of giving everyone a semi-fair chance.

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
Xykon's Phylactory - He came back too many times.
Julio - Combination of Mentorship + Trip to Azure city is too strong. Extra action, 2HP + acting first next round = overpowered in my book.
Sabine - Combination damage reduction + Tactical escape too strong? Maybe just Tactical escape too strong. Perhaps up the limit of damage a little before it gets triggered.
Windstriker - Has above average HP, good attack, a two-round disable (grapple), an extra turn granting (+1 damage) ability... Most characters only have one or at most two of those.

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?
Redcloak: He gets targeted early because of his raise dead ability.
Hilgya: Sure shes a healer, but she can't hurt anything. No good in the end-game except as a King-maker
Eugene: Also has trouble hurting people.
The Lawyers: Same reason. Sure they can annoy people, but can't actually do much damage. The sword is mightier than the pen right now :-)

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?
-
4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
-

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?
I loved the concept of the Demon Roaches.

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?
-

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?

Just that it is an awesome game, and thanks for putting it together :-)

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?
HP gained during the game.
Most damage in one action
# Actions lost
# Actions controlled?
# Bonus actions gained
Who caught Inactivity flu the most

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities

-I agree with Deckmaster here.

Thank You for your efforts.

Re: Pompeys Centipedes. Why did you think there were too many?
I think its a self balancing thing. If you make too many, people kill them. And then they kill you. I didn't really start using them until the end-game pretty much because of this.

I like the "create two on the first turn" twist.
Maybe there should be a sensible limit - perhaps 4-5 max?

I do notice that all the other generating actions had a limit of 1-3 creatures created whereas Pompey did not. But also all of their creatures were stronger (more HP/Damage) and/or the character did not depend on them so much to do damage. All in all I think it balances out.

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2?

yik-yik

Yes on the whole though some of them made me a target.

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already?
yes

2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones?
no

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones?
no

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why?

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
A nice mix would be best in my opinion

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
all always on damage reductions strike backs and tactical escape like abilities

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
most does 1 more damage/healing to a certain character, on the whole those abilities could have been replaced by one of the others and that character would have done better

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
-
3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
raise dead had a lot of potential both in its use and the promise of its use but it made me a massive target

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?
At least one 'super-ability' for each character which doesn't count as one of the 4 chosen but can only be used after a character-specific goal has been met

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
balance while preserving flavor is the only way it should be

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?

5b) The character distribution process
precedence if you have played that character last round and if you had it at the top of your list this round

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?
as much as you can before it drives you insane
seriously though any gather stats would be good

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2?
Yes.

1a) If yes, which character did you play?
The Oracle of Sunken Valley

1b) Were you satisfied with the possibilities of your character?
Yeah, though I felt he was a bit too fragile

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already?
Yup

2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones?
None that I can think of

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones?
Not that I can think of

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why?
I see no real requirements for alterations.

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
Simple is better

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
Sabine's combination of Tactical Escape and Damage Reduction. It meant that it would take an army to deal mediocre damage.

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
The ones that people chose were pretty good, though the Lawyers' attack was terrible

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
I think they fit fairly well.

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
I loved the Test of the Body
I also think Xykon's phylactery was awesome.
Finally, Usurpation had the possibility for amazing stuff.

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?
Yes. I have a new ability for the Oracle, to give him what I think is a better form of self-protection.
"Persuasion" (passive)
When the Oracle is attacked, he can choose to give his attacker the equivilant of a Benevolent Prophecy in order to negate the attack (an attack prevented by "Persuasion" still triggers Field of Memory Loss, if the Oracle has it)

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
Balance, for sure.

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
SABINE!! She had a health-replenishing move, a move-disrupting move, damage reduction, and the ability to prevent anything past a low amount of damage.

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?
The Roaches. HIGHLY ineffectual, and no good in a duel.

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?
None.

4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
The Oracle. Just because I like his style and personality.

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?
The Assassins. I just liked them.

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?
The Oracle. He was far, far too fragile. He needs some protection ability. Even with Memory Loss, it was like: *SLAUGHTER!* *pause* *SLAUGHTER!* once they began to aim at me.

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu

5b) The character distribution process

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?
Could I suggest the addition of Grand Larceny Dude, Tsukiko, and Soon Kim?
(Soon could have some paladin-like abilities, Smite Evil, and the power to generate Ghost Martyr NPCs)

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?
Best Manipulator
Biggest Alliance
and some others.

KazilDarkeye
2007-06-09, 07:57 AM
1) I participated as the Assassins (thanks Enlong by the way  )

2) I read the rules, but I can't think of any to change

3) Overpowered - Sabine (we all saw this conming)
NPC creating abilities (same)
Underpowered - I thought my Explosive Determination was pretty pointless

Non-fitting - I didn't see the Assassins as arsonists

New abilities -
Shadow jump (passive) If after a round this character has received 4 or more damage, they get a +2 bonus to the initiative roll (for assassins)
Periodic Bombardment (creating) You may create either;
a Titanium Elemental with 5hp that does 2 damage
or a Chlorine Elemental with 3hp that does 3 damage
You can only have one elemental in play at once (for Redcloak)

4) Overpowered - Sabine, Pompey, Leeky
Underpowered - Redcloak, Yikyik, Lawyers
If all had equal abilities - Xykon

5) I think choosing 4 out of 6 limits some characters, and makes them way more suceptable to Masterplan (like Belkar)

6) If you want to add new characters, Death Knight
Huecuva
Eye of Fear and Flame

OOTS Showdown Feedback Questionnaire

Remember that not all questions have to be answered

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2?
Yes
1a) If yes, which character did you play?
Thor GOD OF THUNDER
1b) Were you satisfied with the possibilities of your character?
yes

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already?
yes
2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones?
none I can think of off the top of my head
2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones?
Hmm. Nope?
2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why?
Potentially rule #4c could be changed to: Players with the same initiative act in order of their highest initiative bonuses (the way it works in DnD, and also making a high initiative bonus a little better)
3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
A mix of both
3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
Xykon's phylactery, sabine's damage reduction, thats about all i can think of
3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
Personally I thought Thor's global lightning power (that hits everyone for 1 damage) was a bit weak because it pissed off your allies.
Any lethal damage ability that gained you life was weak. Not only did someone have to die, but you also had to have perfect timing.
Haley's manyshot is really only good against summons, because otherwise you really want to focus your fire on one specific enemy.
Spartany's (Miko ability) tradeoff doesn't seem quite good enough. Maybe if it was more around +5 HP
Arch enemy required too much lucky guessing on whether someone would die quickly or not, and overall didn't give much benefit. Maybe if it had a positive tradeoff or if she got to choose a new one once the first one died.
3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
Thog Improvise doesn't seem to have any basis in the comics.
3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
Oh theres so many... Eugene's play the ghostly field and Julia's Look; Boobies abilities made for really funny situations
3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?
I had some for a flumph and a few other characters. You can look at those if you REALLY want to, but I don't care enough about them to submit them

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
balance
4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
Sabine. She's nearly impossible to kill and has a wide range of powerful attacks
4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?
roaches. Low HP and they attract tons of attention to themselves with their healing ability, which can't even get them to a particularly high HP level
4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?
None I can think of
4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
I have no idea. Flumph. No Scracth that Mindflayer all the way.
4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?
They were all good
4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?
nope

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu
no
5b) The character distribution process
no
5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities
This part of the game is great. Please keep it

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?
Great game! cant wait for the next round! (please put in a mind flayer character or flumph :smalltongue: )

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?
Nothing rewarding bad things like inactivity flu

1a) If yes, which character did you play?

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already? Yes

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones? Not to my mind.
2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Rules, no. Actions that require declaration (Bond comes to mind) need to offer a massive benefit or be re-written not to require declares. They're too much of a mega-bullseye.

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex? Closer to simple.
3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered? Xykon's phylactery ability. Sabine's power combo. Individually fine, together, ugh.
3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered? Hilgya needs an attack power.
3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise? Flavour seems dandy
3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important? Balanced power.
4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why? Repeat question. See 3a.
4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why? Either the Demon Roaches, Hilgya or possibly the lawyers.
4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why? None that I could tell.
4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best? Hmmm. Hard to say. Maybe if the drunken wizard was available.

OOTS Showdown Feedback Questionnaire

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2?
Yes

1a) If yes, which character did you play?
Shojo

1b) Were you satisfied with the possibilities of your character?

Yes. However, I felt that Feign Role was underpowered and should have another benefit attached in addition to alignment change.

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already?

I read the original rules from Showdown one and then skimmed #2 for changes

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?

I think each character should have a mix of simple and complex abilities.

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?

Sabine's abilities were a bit overpowered. I think that an HP drawback should have been added on to either Damage Reduction or Tactical Escape, if not both.

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?

Usurpation

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?

I think that flavor is more important than balance.

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?

Sabine, see above. Xykon for all of his death-undeath shenanigans

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?

Chief. He kinda got stomped early on.

4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?

Redcloak or Xykon.

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?

Redcloak.

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu
No.

5b) The character distribution process

No.

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities

No

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?

Mangled Corpse award, for whoever took the most damage in the round that they died, counting posthumous attacks.

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2? yes

1a) If yes, which character did you play? Sabine

1b) Were you satisfied with the possibilities of your character? yes

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already? yes

2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones? I will agree with disliking things that make you declare your action ahead of time. With masterplan as an ability, I can't see why anyone would use any of those.

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones? I don't think so.

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why? I'll agree with the idea that people at same initiative should go in order of their initiative bonus.

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
I prefer simple, I mean, they seem simple now, so that's pretty good at the moment.

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
Xykon's phylactary. Also, while I wouldn't say it's -overpowered- necessarily, but there should probably be a limit on the number of centipedes. Also...I think MitD's DR and vengeful strike are too high, maybe put them down to 3?

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
Hilgya needs better attack capabilities. Also, if she can heal herself, Thor should be able to also.

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
dunno

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
Personally, I love the ones that hit more than one person. Chain lightening, breath attack, etc.

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?
Nah

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
Definitely balance

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
Xykon, MitD

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?
Hilgya, roaches, probably others, but even though I looked them over, I can't think now.

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?

4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
Sabine of course. Frankly, I don't care what you do to her abilities, hell, even make her completely underpowered, I'd still want her. I've played her twice and I'll continue to keep trying to until Silkenfist doesn't let me anymore.

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?
Flavorwise? I like Xykon and Elan

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?
Limit number of centipedes
Limit number of times Xykon can return
Reduce MitD damage reduction

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu - is fine

5b) The character distribution process - is fine

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities - is fine

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?
I love this game. So much.

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?
Hmm....
Most attacked in a single round
Most healed
Most effective alliance
Most lost actions (not inactivity, lost...)
Most damage done in a single action
I'll think on some more...

And I will agree that I don't think Sabine should have the option of both tactical escape and DR. Given my preference, I would replace tactical escape with a different ability. Maybe something with a seduction flavor?

1) I played Xykon in showdown#2, and I was quite satisfied with his abilities. So much even it was really hard to pick 2 abilities I was NOT allowed to have. :P

2) I read all rules and character abilities real good before the game, and even better during the game. No need to remove, add or replace anything.

3) On the one hand making the rules too complex hurts the gameplay since people won't understand how to play their characters or what to expect from others. On the other hand making the rules too simple will cause less uniqueness amongst the abilities and make the game less interesting.

I say we need to find a good balance between the abilities being complex enough so that all abilities are unique and fun to play, but also simple enough for eveyone to understand.

4) Balance is definitely more important. Or at least the players chances of winning.

4a) Xykon and sabine are most overpowered in the sence of being able to survive, but I also think anyone with the ability to heal others can be considered overpowered in the ability to make alliances.

5) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities is awesome. Don't remove. For the inactivity flu I'd like to coin the idea that instead of taking damage, when a player hasn't send in an action, his or her action will be chosen at random against a random target. I can understand though if this is to much extra work for the GM. Or maybe the character will try to repeat its last action instead and shoot air if its last action can't be executed this round.

Here are some suggestions from my side. Use / alter / comment on them as you like.

a) Xykon's His soul-hidey place: (passive) Before the game begins, choose a character that is a part of team Xykon. This choice is only known by Xykon's player and the gamemaster and can never be re-chosen. Whenever Xykon dies, at the end of the next three rounds, if the chosen character is still alive, Xykon returns to live with half of his starting HP, rounded up.

b) Sabine's Tactical Escape: (passive) Whenever Sabine is dealt more than 2 damage in one round, prevent all further attacks against her until the end of that round. (tradeoff: You can't have the Damage Reduction ability as one of your other abilities.)

c) Anyone's Declare Followership : (passive) Once in the game, this character can declare being a follower to another target character. On every round that's divisible by four (rounds 4,8,12, etc) that character can choose your action. While that character is alive, you have Damage Reduction 2

d) Anyone's Regeneration : (passive) On every round divisible by 3 (rounds 3,6,9, etc) this character gains 2 hp.

e) Thor's Lightning speed :(passive) Every other round (rounds 2,4,6,etc) Thor's initiative modifier permanently improves by 1. If Thor's initiative modifier is higher than 10, he can permanently lower it by 5 to gain an aditional action next round.

f) Thor's Delay action : (action) Thor's initiative modifier is permanently improved by 5.

g) Thor's Victory Rage: (passive) Whenever Thor kills another character ( no NPC's) his initiative modifier permantly improves by 3.

h) Thor's Thunder Strike : (attack) Thor deals 4 damage to target character. His initiative modifier permanently decreases by 5.
(This ability can actually be anything that would normally be considered a bit overpowered, being balanced out by eating up his initiative modifier. Think stunning enemies, healing, protecting himself from damage, granting allies some bonusses, etc.)

i) The Lawyers Cease and Desist: Target character loses one non-attacking, non-generating ability of your choice permanently. Can’t be used more than once against each character. Can't be used if 4 or more living characters already have a Cease and Desist order. (Tradeoff: Initiative -3)

j) The Lawyers Scapegoat: (passive) When the lawyers HP goes below 1, their HP become 7, their name changes to Mr Jones and they lose this ability.

k) Assasins Other Poisoned Shurikens: (attack) Deals 2 damage to any target. Target's initiative modifier is permanently lowered by 3.

As I think about this game, I conclude that more players equal more fun, but also more ganging up all on one poor target that won't last through round 1. Maybe you should make 3 or 4 area's and divide the players amongst them. Players can only hit players in the same area and change area once every so many rounds for free or immediately at the cost of an action. We should also set a maximum of players per area, depending on the number of players we start with. If a char tries to change area's but his target area is already full, his move just fails. With this system you can also make alot more moves / passive abilities that interact with moving between area's and forcing other characters to move or being able to hit players in other area's despite the general rule that says you can't. This would also be a very nice flavor mechanic, using area's such as Azure City, Xykon's dungeon, that town were Nale set up the trap with Roy's sister, and The Oracle's Valley.

The last thought I wanted to share / hear opinions about, is that I'd like to see more pre-defined groupings, meaning Roy's Grab your Bizarro Twins and Nale's Inevitable Betrayal? Check. You could also add the groups Azure City and Team Evil (Xykon and such) Maybe make more abilities and passives that buff other players, but only from your own team?

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2?
Yes.

1a) If yes, which character did you play?
Windstriker.

1b) Were you satisfied with the possibilities of your character?
Yes.

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already?
Yes.

2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones?
I don't think so.

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones?
I don't think so.

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why?
No.

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
Simple, definitely.

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
Like others have said, the Sabine damage reduction/tactical escape combo.

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
They all fit pretty nicely.

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
Usurpation and Royal Command.

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?
None that I can think of right now.

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
Mix of both.

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
As others have mentioned, Sabine and Xykon.

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?
Possibly Demon Roaches and Lawyers, for lacking a substantial attack.

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?
They all fit quite nicely.

4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
None in particular, possibly Durkon, Vaarsuvius or Miko.

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu

5b) The character distribution process
I don't mind getting any character, but I think that some characters are more preferred than others. I'd say give a new players a chance to play the popular characters rather than handing them out to the same person each time. Maybe have it so that those who didn't get their top choices last round would get them this round, and vice versa.

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?

Personally, I'm against too many predefined teams (Team OOTS, Team LG, Team Azure City, Team Xykon, etc.). Half the fun is building, keeping, and discovering alliances, and with the predefined alliances none of that happens, you already know exactly who will side with whom, and you really can't forge your own alliances, much less do some of the double crossing that made this game so much fun for me.

But even more seriously, I'm not saying the teams should be ironclad together without any choice in the matter, I'd just like to see a bit more cooperation stimulation than in the last game. Plus I like the idea of a game where its to evil teams and two good teams all facing off in a big brawl.

Blah blah blah - rules are fine.

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
Simple

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
Damage Reduction. This is what makes Sabine overpowered. Take away DR and she's fine. Look at MitD. The Lawyers took DR away and changed him from one of the most powerful characters, able to take on 3 chars in end game, to one of the weakest, killable by the Roaches 1 pt attack. Anyone with DR is going to have to have SERIOUS weaknesses to make up for it.

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
Don the Belt
Target Fixation
Tasty Paper

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
Darkness, which wasn't chosen

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
Balanced power

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
Sabine, MitD, Black Dragon for DR

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?

The Lawyers. They are a spoiler. They can make other characters much worse (see MitD above), but other than that have almost no good abilities, and, because of their one good ability will almost certainly be killed first. They would be my last choice to play, and if I could remove actions, my first choice to attack.

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?

4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
Not sure what this question means... Equal as in the same? that would be boring. As in all games, I want to experience its many facets, and so would rather play a different char each time

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?
I'd say Durkon

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?

Maybe make the Cease and Desist have a condition attached. The lawyers specify an action that will re-instate the power after one round has passed. ("ie attack the Black Dragon") Unlike the control powers, this would be optional. Have it able to affect any power. If the target dies before this happens, the Cease and Desist is permanent. Same if the Lawyers die. One per character at a time, but can target the same person once their power is reinstated.

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?
no, all good

5a) Inactivity Flu

5b) The character distribution process

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities
This one is really good

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?

Unlike most of the others, I have no problem with the Phylactory. Maybe a longer delay before coming back.

1) Did you participate in OOTS Showdown 2?
No

2) Did you read the entire rules of the game already?
Yes

2a) Are there any rules that are redundant and could be removed? Which ones?
Not that I can think of

2b) Are there any rules that need to be added? Which ones?
Not that I can think of

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why?
Not that I can think of

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
More complex, though keeping with the game's basic simplicity.

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
Sabine's energy drain. 'nuff said. The ability to deal a decent amount of damage and at the same time, deny an action, was far too powerful.
Also, the lawyer's cease and desist ability effectively cripples a character for the rest of the game, which seemed a bit overpowered. Perhaps it should go away when the lawyers die?

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
Well, the worst of those were dropped in the initial getgo... the demon roach's main attack was pretty pitiful

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
Can't think of any

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
Centipedes!

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?
Dispel magic. Though I don't know if it actually has ever been used, but something that removes buffs/NPCs (if there's an OotS citation for it)
For redcloak, something to do with those elementals... can't think of a good phrasing for it though, but it's obviously a summoning ability
Sexy, Shoeless, God of War: I can't think of the content for this ability, but the name's entertaining...

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
Flavor in the name and theme of the ability, balance in the magnitude

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
Sabine. Energy drain and DR+retreating

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?
Demon roaches? I'm only parroting someone else there though...

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?
None that I can think of

4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
Belkar, though he's had bad luck so far...

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?
Sabine was built beautifully, if you mean "picked the best 4 abilities".

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?
Xykon's phylactery doesn't increases in the # of turns it takes to regrow, by 1 each time. By a few resurrections in, though he's not technically dead, he's out for the long term. Alternately, setting a limit on the # of resurrections
Lawyer's cease and desist expires when they die

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu
Shouldn't be stopped by damage reduction

5b) The character distribution process
Good. I think. I'm not spectacularly familiar with it.

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities
Good

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?
Amazingly good combat system.
Also, you should have that theif that Belkar killed and the mystic theurge (because a mystic theurge would be an interesting character and that theif was entertaining)
Also, I think DR is fine, just overdone and in Sabine's case might want to be scrapped altogether.

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?
Most damage dealt (cumulative); Success rate (of getting orders to go off successfully)... most of the others have been mentioned, I think

KazilDarkeye

1)
k) Assasins Other Poisoned Shurikens: (attack) Deals 2 damage to any target. Target's initiative modifier is permanently lowered by 3.

Well thanks, man. That gives me an idea:
Poisoned Shuriken (attack) Deals 1 damage. Before the Start of the Game choose one of the following Shuriken Poisons:

Strength: Lower the attacks of your target by 2 for 4 rounds
Dexterity: See the quote
Constitution: See the existing ability
Intelligence: The target must randomly select the target of their next action
Wisdom: The target must post their action in the thread
Charisma: Any Heal actions cast on the target have their effects halved

The assassins can change their poison by giving up their next action

Beta
2007-06-14, 03:43 AM
Those are some nice and fun to play poisens KazilDarkeye, and they seem to be balanced aswell. However, I would change the Wisdom Poisen into :

Wisdom: The target must post their action in the thread. That action can't be the target of Masterplan or benevolent prophecy.

I actually think there should be more abilities that force players to reveal their actions before taking them, together with the line " That action can't be the target of Masterplan or benevolent prophecy." to prevent exploitable mechanics. :smallwink:

2c) Are there any rules that need to be rephrased or changed? Which ones and why? Rules are fine

3) Do you want the character's abilities to be rather simple or rather complex?
Most abilities should be simple. The charatcer's signature abilties should be very complex.

3a) Which character abilities were most overpowered?
All forms of damage Reduction. They require a HUGE penalty to balance.

3b) Which character abilities were most needless/underpowered?
Because I played Belkar:
Belkar's Combat Glee. Although it granted extra action, it only caused you to die from Masterplans.
Homicidal Maniac's Init and HP bonus were too low for such a high penalty. After round 4 or 5, you will be attacking random dudes each turn, lose control of him, and die to MPs.

3c) Which character abilities did not fit flavorwise?
Kobold Hunt. It doesn't match the comic usage

3d) Which was your favorite character ability in the game?
Meat Shield

3e) Are there any new ideas for character abilities you want to submit?
Eye of Fire and Flame: (attack) Deals 1d6 damage to any target. (All versions of Belkar)
NPC Slayer: (passive) NPCs deal no damge to this character. (All versions of Belkar, Xykon, Vaarsuvius)
Screw up Plans: (passive) This cannot cannot be the target of Master Plan, damged by Set Trap, amd actions can’t be chosen by another player. (Belkar, Miko, MitD)

4) Do you think, flavor or balanced power of the characters is more important?
Balance

4a) Which characters were most overpowered? Why?
The defensive characters.

4b) Which characters were most underpowered? Why?
All Damage based Attacker character never kill anyone without dying. Belkar, the Dragon, The Hydra, The rogues.... Attacking => Jumped/Masterplan/turn loss => Death

4c) Which character did not fit its OOTS model? Why?
They all fit

4d) If all characters had equal abilities: Which one would you like to play best?
Belkar or Hinjo

4e) Which character in the current round was the best one designed?
I dunno

4f) Do you have a specific wish how to change a certain character? Which one and how?
Belkar need at least 2 damage attacks and a defensive ability to balance Combat Glee.

5) Do you think, one of the following rules should be removed or altered?

5a) Inactivity Flu No

5b) The character distribution process No

5c) Choosing 4 out of 6 abilities No

6) Are there any comments you would like to add, that didn't fit in one of the former questions?
Attackers need buffs. Turtlers need weaknesses. Action Granters and Healer need to be softer. INIT BONUS ABILITIES SHOULD BE MATTER

7) Which statistics do you want to be calculated for the past round?
Most Kills. Most total damage.

Sure you can. I mean....that was one of the best parts of the beginning of this game. I mean....yeah...Sabine's a member of the linear guild, so had that alliance....but I also had alliances with a member of the oots and one of shojo's group, which worked out marvelously.

Well like you just said, Sabine's a member of the linear guild, so had that alliance. That meant that you automatically had the alliance, without any of the diplomatic fun that not having premade groups has.

Indeed, I expect you to do the unexpected and NOT stick with your predefined team while making it seem like you ARE sticking with your team. Ofcourse, now that I openly declared that that's what I'm expecting, you'll probably do just that because you'll think that I'm trying to make you do the opposite.

What incentive is there to do that? You get benefits for being in the team... and the people your allying with (because your betraying your predefined team) have every incentive to kill you once your usefulness is up.

And the game already had TONS of cooperation stimulation. Last game was chock full of homemade alliances, because about half the characters have abilities that pretty much require they be in an alliance. If you already knew about the teams as you read the battle reports at the beginning of the game, you could clearly see that it was several teams (3, plus some minor ones) facing off in one big brawl.

Make no mistake I'm all for alliances. They are what make the game so great (for me) and I also like Roy and Nale's abilities that create their little teams, I just don't think everyone should have them, because then your alliance becomes to much of an automatic thing.

I have it! The way to fix DR

Damage Reduction: (passive) The first five damage dealt to the Monster each round are prevented. Similarly, the first five healing points each round are also prevented. (Tradeoff: -2 HP)

This gives a balanced weakness for DR, and ensures that even if the power is stolen, the weakness goes with it. It will also stop DRs like Sabine from getting disgustingly high HPs , as she did last round.

But then his other ability (Gluttony) is totally ruined.

Personally, I don't see whats so bad about Damage reduction. Yes its good, but so are other abilities. MITD's probably needs a nerf though. (Nerf=needs some balance changes against it)

Note: I wasn't playing, but I did happen to catch a lot of the end-game action. Just a few observations from my end.

Sabine's DR was fine; it wasn't nearly high enough to make it impossible for anyone do damage her one on one. However, the MitD's DR was enough so that even Masterplan (As far as I know, the most damaging ability in the game) couldn't hurt it in a one on one fight, meaning he would win every end-game confrontation. Now, ways to negate DR would be cool, like giving Miko the skill: "Power Attack: Reduces enemy's DR, if any, to 0 and does 2 damage to them." Or giving the magical abilities the add-on: "Ignores enemy's DR, if any."

Noone can take the MitD one on one. But to balance the high damage reduction he has low hitpoints. If several characters gang up on him, they can kill him quite quickly.
The MitD didn't really get a showing last game because of the lawyers removing his damage reduction and effectively killing him with that.

Where I think Sabine was overpowered was the combination of Damage reduction + The Escape ability meaning very few people could go one on one with her, but you couldn't effectively gang up on her either.

I do like the ideas of attacks that ignore DR though.

How about these new abilities for the next OOTS showdown? :

Silver weapon :(attack) deals 2 damage. Ignores DR

Nightmare : Target can't use one ability of own choice for 4 rounds. Target is allowed to choose an ability it has already lost. (prevents lockup)

Stunning fist : (attack) deals 1 damage. Target cant use one ability by attackers choice until the end of this round.

Field of memory loss : (passive) Whenever <this creature> is attacked the attacker loses one passive ability until the end of next round.

Mind blank : (passive) <this creature> can't loose his abilities no matter what.

Ki strike: (passive) When <this creature> deals damage to an evil character, it ignores DR.

Painfull attack: (attack) Deals 4 damage. If the target survives, you lose 4 HP.

Heavy finisher: (attack) Deals 5 damage. Damage can't be enhanced / buffed. If the target survives, it is healed 7 hp.( better not use it unless it kills your target)

Heavier finisher: (attack) Deals 6 damage. Damage can't be enhanced / buffed. If the target survives, it permanently gets DR 5. ( better not use it unless it kills your target)

Variable Damage Reduction : (passive) Each round, prevent the next 1d6 damage. If 5 or 6 is rolled, no damage is prevented this round.

Temporary Damage Reduction : (passive) Each round, prevent the next 3 damage. Roll 1d6. If a 1 is rolled, you loose this ability.

Self buff Damage Reduction : (passive) If the player chooses to activate this ability, it gets DR 5 for 3 rounds and looses this ability.

Buff other Damage Reduction: Target player loses 1hp and gets DR 1 until the end of this round. You get 1 hp.

Buff other Damage Reduction: Choose 3 players, at least 1 of which have attacked you earlier this game. One of them is choosen at random and gets DR 2 until the end of next round.

Damage Reduction 3/good : (passive) Each round, prevent the next 3 damage unless it was dealt to you by a player with a GOOD alignment.( Instead of GOOD, same can be done for EVIL, NEUTRAL, CHAOTIC, LAWFUL, MALE, FEMALE.

Damage Reduction X: (passive) Each round, prevent the next x damage, where x is the number of players who attacked you last round.

Expensive Damage Reduction:(passive)Each round, choose a number. You lose that amount of Hp and until the end of the round, you have twice that much DR.(pay 1 life, get DR 2 ; pay 2 life, get DR 4; etc)

Somehow intenting to make a small reply always ends up not so small.

Some good abilities Beta, though who are they for? I can see a few of them on certain characters...but the others just plain baffle me.

Also that "Attack them, do 5 damage and if they're alive heal 7 damage" thing can actually be a healing move, so if you want to make sure it isn't used for healing teammates you could make it so the boost acts only at the end of the round.

There are 6 types of defensive moves

DR
Bonus HP
Healing
Action drain
Attack prevent
Traps and Plans

All characters should have access to at least 1 or the above. No character should have access to more than 2 of the above without a major crippling weakness.

Yeah, gaining DR 5 for a mere 6 HP is a good trade.

Yeah, gaining DR 5 for a mere 6 HP is a good trade.

Well, balancing all the involved numbers is a whole different aspect that can be done afterwards. And I'll admit thats not my strong point anyhow. :smalltongue:

First, the damage for Inactivity Flu is the penalty for losing your action, not the other way round.

Also, the character choosing process was already fairly random

(I seem to be the only person who thinks discarding 2 abilities is not too good  )

Well, maybe shouldn't think about it as discarding 2 abilities, but more as CHOOSING four abilities, instead of being stuck with the four or less abilities your character is designed with, like Oots Showdown #1.

^ Looks like we have an optimist on the thread

Beta

^ I'll take that as a compliment. (as a true optimist)

I recently came up with some more abitilies for the next showdown. What do you think?

Julio's True gentleman : (passive) At the beginning of the game, every character of the opposite sex gets the "charmed" status. Characters who are charmed cannot take any harmfull actions against you except for the attack Slap acros the face, which deals 1 damage. When you take a harmfull action against a charmed character, that character looses the charmed status.

Elan's Tag, you're it : (passive) The next time you target a person, that person gets this ability and you loose this ability. All damage you deal is reduced by 1, to a minimum of 1 unless your name is Elan.

Xykon's summon vampire[\U] : (generating) Select target character with the status "dead". It's status becomes "destroyed". If you do, you can create a vampire NPC under your control. Its Hp are equal to one-third of the characters original HP. It has a [U]slam attack that deals 1 damage and the passive ability creature of the night, which prevents it from taking any actions on any round divisible by 2. If 4 vampires exist under Xykon's control, the one with the least HP is destroyed at the end of the round.

Shojo's Mark of justice : (attack) If target player (no NPC) deals damage to someone this round, this attack deals 3 damage.

Samantha's Kidnap boyfriend : Target male character gets the "Samantha's boyfriend" status unless he already has the "Samantha's ex" status. Characters who have the "Samantha's boyfriend" status cannot take any harmfull actions against her as long as they can take harmfull actions against other characters. On every round divisible by 4, Samantha can decide your action for you. If Samantha uses the Kidnap boyfriendability again or takes a harmfull action against you, you loose the "Samantha's boyfriend" status and gain the "Samantha's ex" status.

Elan's Disguise self :You gain the "Disguised : <target> " status. As long as you have the disguised status, all actions targeting you have a 50% chance of hitting the target your impersonating instead and all actions against the target have a 50% chance of hitting you instead.

Vaarsuvius's Protection from arrows : you gain DR 2 for 4 rounds and can't use this ability again for 5 rounds.

Xykon's THE bouncing ball : (attack) This round, everyone uses a random valid ability against a random valid target. You loose this ability. Nobody except Xykon can activate, gain or copy this ability

In response to the thing about different areas:
1) In order to move from 1 area to another - you can move for free at the end of a round, but you lose your first action in that area (barring passive abilities)
2) I think each area should have some ability(ies), but also here's a character ability (for Miko)

Enduring Montage Sequences (passive): You do not lose your action for transferring to another arena. If you wish you may take an extra round to reach your desired area, and if you do this then you cannot target or be targeted by another character when you move.

The Dungeon of Dorukan
Employee's Secret Exit: In every round the highest and lowest people in the initiative order must target each other. If there are multiple people that can be targeted they are all reqired to target someone.
Pit of 2nd Edition:Instead of taking an action a character may jump into the pit and remain there for 1 round. They take 1d6 damage but cannot be targeted by other characters.

Wooden Forest
Surprise! We're, um bandits and stuff: Every round a bandit attacks a random character in the area for 2 damage.
Druid's Local 303: Every round a druid heals a random character in the area for 2 HP

Azure City
Come to scenic Azure City: Characters don't lose their action if they change area to Azure City
It's probably sanctified or something: If the majority of characters in the area or Good, then they all gain 2HP and have their attacks increased by 2 for as long as they are in the majority. (Same for Evil if they are predominant)

Sunken Valley
Questguard TM: If someone arrives in Sunken Valley they must lose another action or take The Three Tests (unsure on what this would entail)
Field of Memory Loss: If someone leaves the Sunken Valley they must lose another action, but they can't be targetted by abilities during those lost rounds.

My big beef is that the abilities don't match the characters style. Like, for example, Xykon has Set Trap. Xykon? Defensive ability? Um, Hello? Xykon blows stuff up, and then his arrogance and lack of planning kills him. The bouncing ball (above) is pure Xykon.

Likewise, Elan has only one "wacky" ability, and not that wacky or good of an ability. Elan doesn't cause mayhem, which he should in this environment.

Similarly, Roy's abilities don't seem the right combo of steady beatdown and protection of others. V has little firepower, which he should have more then enough of.

I'll join the Sabine is overpowered Bandwagon, DR+Escape is to good, as is both attacks together.

Beta: Summan Vampire is too weak.
max 3 monsters with 1/2 damage per turn that can only be summoned in special instances? Weak.
Also this seams more redcloaks style.
