As some of you may be aware, I am currently working on a homebrew megaproject to revamp the much-maligned 5e crafting rules. It's coming along well and there's only one major section left to do, but I was wondering if I could gather some thoughts from the community. On page 129 of the DMG, there is a short section about "running a business". I want to expand on this and give the players more knobs to turn and levers to pull, without making it into a 'adventure' in its own right. My question for you is: what would you add/change?

Mostly, I just want to hear your thoughts on players owning and running a business as a background or downtime activity. An activity that requires a bit of thought from them, but doesn't take hours of micromanagement. How do I make this fun? In what way are the existing rules lacking? What sort of profit potential should this have in comparison to adventuring? Any other thoughts?
