Just a quick question, and citations would be most graciously appreciated. Once a multiclassing character gains a class skill from a class he just took, does it remain a class skill for all future classes, regardless of that particular classes class skills? Quick example

Bob is a rogue 1. Bob has 4 ranks in move silent. Bob decides he wants to get a free feat and some extra hp, so Bob takes a level of fighter after 1k xp and become a rog1/ftr1. Bob now has 3 skill points, and wants to put another rank in move silent. Is move silent still a class skill costing him 1 skill point? Or would that rank cost Bob 2 of his precious fighter skill points?

Citations please

Ummm, it's a cross-class skill by definition! Any skill that isn't a class skill is a cross-class skill? What changes is the max ranks... if you had rogue 1/fighter 19, you could still have 23 ranks in move silently... you'd just have to pay 2 skill points for every 1 rank with your fighter levels!

It costs him two skill points per rank, since Move Silently isn't a class skill for Fighter. He can, however, get up to his level+3 ranks in Move Silently, since Move Silently is a class skill for Rogue (which he has a level in). If that Rogue level was a Fighter level instead, the most ranks he could have in Move Silently is 2 (and a half).

Each skill point you spend on a class skill gets you 1 rank in that skill. Class skills are the skills found on your character’s class skill list. Each skill point you spend on a cross-class skill gets your character ½ rank in that skill. Cross-class skills are skills not found on your character’s class skill list. (Half ranks do not improve your skill check, but two ½ ranks make 1 rank.) You can’t save skill points to spend later.

The maximum rank in a class skill is the character’s level + 3. If it’s a cross-class skill, the maximum rank is half of that number (do not round up or down).

Regardless of whether a skill is purchased as a class skill or a cross-class skill, if it is a class skill for any of your classes, your maximum rank equals your total character level + 3.

the way I think of it is like this.

the maximum skill points you can put into any given skill is your total character level +3, regardless.

However, the actual rank of the skill = (skill points you put into it while the skill is a Class skill) + (skill points you put into it while it's a CC)/2

Hmmmm, i'd still allow people to take one rank per skill point in such cases. But you heard the guys, and rules are rules..

Thanks for the quick reply, that was exactly what I was looking for.

A bit late to the thread, but...
The way I usually remember it is as follows:

Class skill: 1:1, max ranks
Cross-class skill: 1:2, half ranks
Former class skill: 1:2, full ranks

The rules are written in such a way as to make the whole thing seem more complicated than it is.
