Rules question

Hi,i have a player who has just reached 6th level in a 5th edition game i DM,he is a fighter.He wants to take the magic initiate feat,he
's chosen cleric,which gives him two cantrips etc. so far so good, then he asks me if he takes the sacred flame cantrip,does he do 1 d 8 damage or does he do 2 d 8 damage(you need to be level 5 to do the extra d 8)?I can't find anything in the PH that says he doesn't do the 2 d 8 damage,however i'm still skeptical,can anyone clarify this for me please and TY in advance.

Cantrip scaling is based on your Character level(so your total levels). For him it would be 2d8 indeed. Do note that the Spellcasting ability is based on the Spellcasting ability of the class from which the spells are.

Always nice to help people. Also when he reaches lvl 11the damage increases to 3d8 even though he took the feat at lvl 6.
