What's up playground , hoping to get some help with exotic weapons. I'm playing a wood elf ranger/druid using a longbow primarily with 2 scimitars for melee. For flavor I'm wanting to ask my DM for a boomerang or boleadora , but I don't know how to stat these , has anyone used them before and how did you do it ? And are there any other cool weapons you could suggest ? Not looking for anything too strong a d4 or d6 is fine but I'd like it to fit my character , wood elf archer arctic ranger beastmaster with a native american scout feel to him. Any and all help is appreciated - Thx

Boleadora has the same role as net. You could ask to see if you could get a slightly better DC check on a net. A net deals no damage so you will either have to find another source of damage or see if you can wrangle out a spiked net (d4 piercing).

Boomerangs are a club with a thrown (20/60) property. A magical boomerang might have some sort of returning feature to mimic the trope boomerang (which is a thing, they are just for sport/fun) but a weapon boomerang is made to spin to stabilise itself so that it flies straighter for longer.

Boleadora has weighted ends , I would think at the least it should have more range than a net and I agree maybe a slightly better DC check sounds about right. I wouldn't want to get too technical on the boomerang but I'd hope for a return on misses (without magic) I mean that is the coolest part of a boomerang. And what would you suggest for range ?

30/120 matches the sling, which uses 1d4 bludgeoning ammunition. 20/60 is the most common for non-ranged weapons. Net is 5/15 but a boleadora is more specialised so maybe 20/60.

First and foremost, if I were a DM, you'd be required to have special training prior to either weapon to be used with proficiency. To gain those proficiencies, I'd make it a special downtime event of some sort.

As for stats,

Boomerang:
1d4, bludgeoning, (30/120), Returning

Returning: This weapon returns to you after being thrown (on a hit or miss). Because of the time required to catch it, you can throw it only once when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to throw it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make.

Boleadora:
Same as a sling
1d4, bludgeoning, (range of sling), Grapple

Grapple: On a hit with this weapon, you may choose to forgo the damage and instead impose a grapple attempt. The creature must then make a Dex Save against a DC of 8+proficiency+Str mod. If the creature fails, it is then grappled and falls prone. Otherwise, the creature avoids the effects of the Boleadora.

Personally I would just call the boleadora a net and leave it at that. You can make it however you like fluff wise but gameplay wise it is a net and there is no difference. Giving random stat ups for weapons might send some red flags for DMs (it will to me). Also by the RAW there are no exotic proficiency and you can't gain exotic proficiency in anyway (the Weapon master feat was errata'd to make the chosen weapons be simple or martial only).

Probably they want exotic weapons to be limited to classes only if they want exotic weapons to exist.

Boomerangs are a more odd bunch but I would just stat it as a dart that can return.

IRL A boomerang will not return if it strikes a target. Make it return only on a miss.

It really depends on the reasoning you want these weapons. If you want them for thematic reasons, refluff some existing weapons and there is nothing too much more needed (as long as you already have proficiency with the base weapon). If you want them for tactical reasons, aka the additional traits I gave, there has to be some sort of way of obtaining/being able to use them. And even then, the party dynamic comes into play making sure these weapons don't break the game (the Boleadore possibly can) or outshine someone else.

However, the OP just asked for stats, so I gave a re-fluffed stat and an ability to make them interesting and give reason for the training needed.

Boomerang d4 bludgeoning Martial Weapon, returns to thrower on a miss. Thrown 30/120

Boleadors Make it a 20/60 Ranged Martial weapon with Prone on hit until freed with Action requiring DC5 Str Check or 1 Point of Slashing Damage AC10.

Neither of those should break the game, are flavorful and fun. The Boomerage is like a javelins but trades returning on a miss for a smaller damage die. The Beleadora has longer range but trades restrained for prone with an easier escape.

I like this , the idea being the bolas are specifically to knock a target prone and the net (I think) to restrain. Yea mostly for flavor I guess I'm not trying to break the game or outshine anyone and they would only be used situationally (obviously) and sparingly but I think it just adds some cool flavor that would fit my character , and I'm sure my DM will require me to get some practice in and I'm fine with that. Appreciate all of the feedback
