I need a recommendation for a golem:

Level 6 party, 5 members
not a flesh golem
not anything evil
a challenge that presents a real threat . . .
. . . but that won't result in a TPK

I was thinking of a stone golem, but I fear that might be too much. I'm looking for something that resembles a statue, or a suit of armor, and is activated. As always, there might be a way around it.

If you could make a recommendation and tell me where to find such a thing, that would be swell. (I'm not opposed to tweaking a stone golem or the like to more appropriately suit the party.)

EDIT: We've encountered Stained Glass Golems, so been there, done that.

The Caryatid Column (Fiend Folio, page 30, CR6) might be good for you then. It is disguised as a stone statue and is set to guard areas.

Shield Guardian (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/shieldGuardian.htm) seems just about right. If your party is good, it has a spell stored.

A basic Helmed Horror from Lost Empires of Faerun and I believe Monsters of Faerun might suffice. They're intelligent constructs with some special immunities and the ability to enchant their own weapons. It's CR 8 so it's tough for your party, but with 5 of them, it should be okay.

A 6 HD effigy should be good. Solid in combat and not overpowering.

How about the Golden Guardian (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20030901a), or The Watchers (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/mm/mm20010601a)?

why not make a living spell instead of a golem? just find a suitable spell level to challenge a 5-lvl6 party and you're good to go, my guess would be around a lvl 3 with cl 10 or a lvl 4 with cl 8, as both of those make a challenge of CR 8, perfect for a real threat, without being overkill.

Edit: just remember, don't use save-or-die as base spells, your party's gonna have a bad time with that.

So no adding living spells to "Tomb of Horrors"?

This one actually fits the theme perfectly....

It's gonna be 20k coins for each member though...

Just make it a Copper Golem instead.

Have fun enforcing weight limit rules and/or applying a time constraint.

More like 3k coins per member, unless they kill it by disenchanting the whole thing. Every HP of damage destroys 1k of gold, so the 85 hp golem drops from 100k to 15k by the time it's beaten into inert cash.

Anyone fighting a moving pile of gold would try grabbing all the gold they can from it, don't underestimate greedy players.
