ok so quick question for you guys when using dispel magic as a area effect and targeting a creature summoned via summon monster and the player used the spell to summon more of a lower level creature if you dispel one creature does it dispel the whole spell?

I believe that if it hits multiple creatures from the same summon spell, it's one roll to dispel the both of them (since it's one spell), but since area dispel only dispels things in it's area, any creatures from that same spell outside of the area would remain.

If you, on the other hand, specifically targeted the spell effect "Summon Monster X" or whatever, it would be one spell to dispel the whole thing.

It's kinda like how an area dispel only dispels part of a fog cloud that it overlaps with, but if you specifically target the fog cloud effect, the whole thing would go.

It says: "If an object or creature that is the effect
of an ongoing spell (such as a monster
summoned by monster summoning) is in the
area, you can make a dispel check to end
the spell that conjured that object or
creature (returning it whence it came) in
addition to attempting to dispel spells
targeting the creature or object."

So you would end the one spell that summoned all of them, which ends the duration of the spell.
