View Full Version : Is this DMPC okay?

I'm running a 3.5E campaign and know that a lot of you guys don't really like DMPCs, but I've thought about this one and thought that she was okay. Still, I want your opinions.
-Level 15 Sorcerer (with some healing magic) in a party of 8th level Fighter, Rogue, Paladin and Monk
-She is brash and impulsive, with a habit of charming, killing or polymorphing anyone who gets on her nerves. However, she is still praised by almost everyone she meets
-Ability scores 12, 15, 17, 16, 15, 32 (due to being known as the most beautiful in the world)
-Secretly the daughter of the campaign world's god of magic, and the only one capable of defeating the main villain
-I'm willing to fudge die rolls once in a while, since if she dies it will seriously wreck the campaign
-The party will meet her when she saves them from a group of monsters that they cannot defeat themselves
Also, I haven't though of a name for her yet, any ideas?

Absolutely not. This is an over-level tier one caster with a penchant for flashy magic, who isn't allowed to die. If she's on the adventure, it's hard to see how the PCs will be more than spear carriers and servants.

Are you an experienced DM with a huge degree of positive feedback and experience keeping a DMPC from stealing the show?

If not, don't. I know two humans I would trust to even attempt such a thing.

Is this intended as Satire? Because this reads like a list of just about every DMPC Red Flag in the book.

DMPC is substantially more powerful than the PC's. Nope Nope Nope.

-She is brash and impulsive, with a habit of charming, killing or polymorphing anyone who gets on her nerves. However, she is still praised by almost everyone she meets

DMPC is beloved by NPCs despite behavior that shouldn't endear her to anybody.

-Ability scores 12, 15, 17, 16, 15, 32 (due to being known as the most beautiful in the world)

Again, more powerful than the PC's and "Most Beautiful In the World"...

-Secretly the daughter of the campaign world's god of magic, and the only one capable of defeating the main villain
DMPC is more important to the plot than the PC's.

-I'm willing to fudge die rolls once in a while, since if she dies it will seriously wreck the campaign
I'm okay with the occasional bit of dice roll fudging normally, but here it seems that your intent is to say that, no matter what choices the PC's make or how the dice fall, you intend to keep this DMPC alive.

-The party will meet her when she saves them from a group of monsters that they cannot defeat themselves

And she's introduced as a deus-ex-machina in a situation intended to impress the PC's/ make the PC's feel indebted to her.

Yeah. Nothing about this DMPC is Okay.

Well, let me offer some advice. Just saying "Nope!" repeatedly really doesn't help.

I'm running a 3.5E campaign and know that a lot of you guys don't really like DMPCs, but I've thought about this one and thought that she was okay. Still, I want your opinions.

-Level 15 Sorcerer (with some healing magic) in a party of 8th level Fighter, Rogue, Paladin and Monk Make her level 1. Make her a LOT weaker, so they need to protect her. Alternatively, make her level 8, so she holds her own.

-She is brash and impulsive, with a habit of charming, killing or polymorphing anyone who gets on her nerves. However, she is still praised by almost everyone she meets That's just... Change it. Entirely. Either that or have people react appropriately-with fear and disgust.

-Ability scores 12, 15, 17, 16, 15, 32 (due to being known as the most beautiful in the world) Give her normal level 1/level 8 stats. Focus on Charisma, sure, but just have her beauty be a side trait. And more than that, remember-beauty is only skin deep.

-Secretly the daughter of the campaign world's god of magic, and the only one capable of defeating the main villain Don't have this be a secret. Make it clear who she is and why she is needed. And see if your players are okay with it.

-I'm willing to fudge die rolls once in a while, since if she dies it will seriously wreck the campaign That's just bad form.

-The party will meet her when she saves them from a group of monsters that they cannot defeat themselves Again, massively bad form.

Also, I haven't though of a name for her yet, any ideas? Mary Sue? :P

My advice is thus: Make sure the players KNOW she is vital to the plot, and make sure THEY protect HER-NOT the other way around. Treat her like a macguffin.

Or, honestly-drop her entirely. That's probably for the best.

"I know you guys don't normally like DMPCs, but this one is necessary for the campaign to progress, and is a special ****ing snowflake in every way."

Nearly twice the level of the party, healing spells on the sorcerer list, plot armor, most beautiful demigoddess of magic, you're willing to fusge whatevercs necessary to keep her alive, relevant, and in the spotlight?

My arm is not long enough for the jerking off hand gesture that lives in my soul right now.

What function does this DMPC serve? How long will she be travelling with the PCs?

In a one off adventure "escort this important person through dangerous territory" it can, but probably won't, work.

The level disparity is a big issue. What you can do as DM already overshadows anything any player can do. Add a DMPC and you get to overshadow them in the one paradigm that is under their control.

If you just want to play a PC, start training one of your players to be a DM so you can be on the other side of the screen. If you want to participate in your own world building, well...you're kinda out of luck. Unless, of course, you start writing fantasy. That is the one Venue where a DMPC really gets the respect that they deserve without angering anyone else.

Did something go down in your group that your DMPC could have effected better? Then write that short story, don't enforce your will on the group imagination collective dreamspace.

Well of course! We can't have the demigoddess princess of magic be land-poor, that would be silly. Also, was this an immaculate conception, or is her father a demon lord who will renounce his several millennia long preference for all thungs evil to join his daughter in the final fight?

If ever a snowflake fell that was so unique it changed the course of the game from ttRPG to storytime with the DM....

-Ability scores 12, 15, 17, 16, 15, 32 (due to being known as the most beautiful in the world)

Most beautiful in the world but ONLY a 17 in Constitution? 32 Charisma can certainly sell a 17 con healthy as all getup human as such, but why only a 17? If you want a peak humanoid you need at least a 20, as 18+ starts to get into superhuman levels. Plus, those extra HP means less fudging rolls to keep Marionette Sue alive. I like the 12 strength, meaning she clearly lifts, but only enough to get some muscle under all of that tone. Marie Susantoniette needs to keep her squat game strong to tone that butt and strong back/legs to carry that rack of +8 Charisma.

Mando Knight

Also, was this an immaculate conception,

Of course it was immaculate. You think that the birth of Our Lady, the Blessed Mary Sue would be anything else? Don't confuse immaculate conception with virginal conception, they're two completely separate things. Suffice to say, "immaculate conception" means that the character was more-or-less conceived in perfection.

It didn't work quite as well as I had hoped, actually. My players just rolled their eyes when she came in and saved them. The paladin swore an oath to protect her after she saved his life, but really started to roleplay it less and less. After she got bored and charmed the fighter and monk into fighting each other, with them both ending up unconscious, the paladin started to talk to her about her moral and honorary choices and ended up getting turned permanently into a pig with a stick shoved up his behind. By then, the rogue was the only party member still functional. After she explained her true identity and that she was the only one that could defeat the villain, the rogue's player told me that he had a dentist appointment and had to go. It was weird, he never mentioned it before. Better luck next session, I guess.

Clearly your DMPC's utter perfection reminded the rogue player of their own inadequacies (such as dental hygiene), and had to leave immediately to rectify the situation, so as to earn the right to bask in Our Lady's shining glory.

Yeah, I don't think she's anywhere near powerful enough, she wouldn't be able to hold her own. How about Sorcerer 20/Psion 20/Fighter 20 with the ability to cast arcane spells in armour and perform somatic components while dual-wielding katana. As the most beautiful person in the world she's obviously half-goddess half-vampire, and so she needs pale skin and dark hair. The mood ring eyes are a nice addition as well, we can't expect the saviour of the world to have something as mundane as red eyes. But don't forget the most important part, that as the most beautiful woman in the world she has an extremely thin body with giant tracts of land.

In seriousness, I want to include a character like this in a campaign now, with skill-based spellcasting and fumble rules. I'd then get a die loaded to land on a .

I ran a campaign once that started like this - the PCs were hired by the king to serve as a retinue for the crown prince, a child of prophecy and gifted warrior who was to travel to the legendary place and do the legendary thing that would prevent the apocalypse and bring prosperity and all that junk.

The prince was crushed into paste by a plot dragon about 15 minutes in and the PCs were left with the goal of completing the prophecy without Mr. MacGuffin. Hilarity ensued.

Where is she from, Elf Only Inn (http://www.elfonlyinn.net/d/20040810.html)? :smalltongue:

Also I want to subvert the trope above as the prince's parents way of getting the PCs to send the lil bugger off to school. "Oh, oh… YES!! A grand, er, quest! One that only you can complete, m'lord!"

To be honest I have had thoughts of turning my longest-running character (https://www.schadenfreudestudios.com/forum/thread.php?thread=69) into a DMPC when it comes time to retire her… one that'll rarely leave her alchemy shoppe (aside from popping up at fine dining establishments, the theaters, balls, whatever hoity-toity place the PCs end up being a noble lady and all). Basically the idea is to have a quick, easy supply of alchemical items (or poisons) and extra-strong everburning torches (via a heightened continual flame), especially if she reaches a high-enough level to pick up Augmented Alchemy/Epic Poison Crafter (seriously; how else am I going to feasibly make use of those feats?).

I mean there's only so many dangerous and exiting planes one can visit before it all becomes so… samey… and such menial tasks like saving the multiverse would be so beneath her. Now running a business? That's a real challenge!

…and if the party behaves itself, perhaps she'd led her use her second-floor bedrooms as a base of operations. Plus if she learns a permanent version of the eidolon epic spell she can start a franchise!

(Either that or combine endure elements and protection from energy with her necklace of adaptation and have her greater teleport to the various moons/planets — basically kick her off of GREYHAWK® and into SPELLJAMMER®.)

Is this some kind of "exalted goody-goody" campaign where redeeming the villain is required? Because otherwise she would make a great villain after a quick face-heel turn (and make it quick, because they will hate her fast). Just don't take too many suggests about overpowering her.

Make sure she can, like, stop time at will, but everyone can still hear her if she wants them to, so that she gets enough time to tell her dramatic backstory and intricate motivations.

And give her a great wyrm prismatic dragon to ride, who is really fearsome and listens only to her, but towards anyone else he's very aggressive. The dragon sparkles and is called Rainbow, but if anyone else calls him rainbow the dragon kills him/her.

Also, the players should get a proper sense of how strong she is, so be certain to throw a few impossible encounters at the PC's (if they roll improbably well, just ignore the dice and say they miss), then have her step in at the last moment and save them all. Of course, afterwards she should belittle the PC's for it, as they obviously should have been stronger.

From time to time, ask the players if they have any feedback on the character, but if they say anything negative point out that everyone adores this NPC and they should too. Don't let those munchkinning metagamers get to you!

This is stupid. Someone so special shouldn't be a Sorcerer, a class that any other PC can take. Clearly she needs to have a special homebrew class which the players will never have heard about, much less be able to take for their characters. I refer you to DnDWiki for many examples of balanced homebrew.

And a few legendary artifacts. I mean, of course her goddess mother left a little something to help her in her crib.

Nah, the color changes to indicate her current mood! :smallwink:Michelle Sagara actually does this with the non-human races in her Cast in Shadow books. Dragon eyes range from gold (happy) to red (really angry). Barrani eyes range from green to blue, Leontine eyes get red when they're angry, but I don't recall how the aerian's eyes change. I'm not sure if the Tha'alani eyes change either.

I was slowly trying to hint towards the SUE files. Maybe her ultimate goal is to conquer the multiverse?

The only people standing against her are the current ruler, Chief Circle Marty, and Trekkin's character Phineas T. Brick, agent of the Culture-like society Cael set up, the only person with more competence than her or Marty.
