I put the RP tag because I don't see a real use for this mechanically.
I'm building a Druid, and he's a young lad with a riding dog. Now, let's say he began his druidic life when he hit adulthood, and that's when he got his faithful hound, also an adult. If he's been with the dog for several years, even 3 or 4 (it was a safe community until recently), shouldn't that dog be at least middle-aged?
I'm sure there are weird corner cases where this might be beneficial, maybe an exalted companion blink dog with cleric levels or something. I've just never heard of age categories being used on anything beside humanoid PCs/NPCs.
Any old grumpy hermits out there with old grumpy dogs?
