Hello Playground, I have a rules question for Pathfinder.

If someone has temporary hit points, and they nonlethal damage, would you count the temporary hit-points when deciding if that person falls unconscious? E.g. A character has 10 hp, 10 temp hp and they have taken 15 nonlethal damage. Would they fall unconscious at that point, or would they have to take nonlethal damage greater then 20 hp before they fall unconscious?

The relevant rules are below:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat#TOC-Temporary-Hit-Points
'When your nonlethal damage exceeds your current hit points, you fall unconscious. While unconscious, you are helpless.'

'Certain effects give a character temporary hit points. These hit points are in addition to the character's current hit point total and any damage taken by the character is subtracted from these hit points first. Any damage in excess of a character's temporary hit points is applied to his current hit points as normal. If the effect that grants the temporary hit points ends or is dispelled, any remaining temporary hit points go away. The damage they sustained is not transferred to the character's current hit points.'

There isn't a specific definition for the term 'current hit points', it seems to be defined implicitly throughout the srd.

Temp HP apply, i.e. they keep you conscious longer, for as long as they last. Nonlethal can't remove them, so you simply need more of it to knock somebody with temp HP out.

Thanks for responding.

What rationale are you using for that interpretation? Is there some obscure rule that clarifies this, or that based on trying to Read them As Intended?

It's from the very quote you supplied. "These hit points are in addition to the character's current hit point total" - "In addition" means you add them. Nonlethal then says "When you take nonlethal damage, keep a running total of how much you've accumulated. Do not deduct the nonlethal damage number from your current hit points. It is not “real” damage." Since nonlethal is never deducted, it doesn't reduce your THP.

It should be noted that (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat#TOC-Nonlethal-Damage)"If a creature's nonlethal damage is equal to his total maximum hit points (not his current hit points), all further nonlethal damage is treated as lethal damage."
So, once you get to that point, your usually nonlethal attacks will start taking off the temp HP, because they're doing lethal damage now.
