Mustering characters for 5th edition game. Please use this thread during set-up.




1. What is the game system
D&D 5th edition Core, with expansions from the setting. No particular restrictions beyond this.

2. What is the setting
WotC Princes of the Apocalypse. The players companion is available here:

The setting is forgotten realms 1491 DR, vaguely near to Neverwinter.

3. What is the medium of play
PBP on GitP forums over 2 threads (in addition to this), an IC and an OOC. All player rolls are expected to be made in the IC thread in spoilers, supported by occasional rolls in the OOC thread. Usual stuff. Please respond with a colour to use to indicate your characters IC voice.

4. Initial state - statistics
All characters will start at level 3. Stats to be rolled in this thread are to be 4d6b3 x 6 allocated as per your choosing. Especially poor or favourable sets are likely to be modified. HP are max first level, rolled (or half, whichever is better) thereafter. Starting wealth: 1,000 GP.

5. Initial state - fluff
All characters will belong to the Emerald Enclave:
This widespread group of wilderness survivalists
preserves the natural order while rooting out unnatural
threats. Many of the Enclave's members are barbarians,
druids, and rangers. Some wander the untamed lands
while others make their homes on the outskirts of towns
and villages, where they help to protect travellers from
the dangers of the wild.
The enclave's greatest stronghold in the region
is the fortified farm and abbey to Chauntea called
Goldenfields. Abbot Ellardin Darovik is a senior agent
of the Emerald Enclave. In the High Forest to the east
lies Shadowtop Cathedral, another of the enclave's
meeting places.

Character motivations are expected to be aligned to supporting the factions objectives and methods, and back story is expected to support this affiliation. How this is achieved is up to player creativity - but I will veto anything that is really far fetched or not in keeping.

In addition, once characters have been submitted an additional caveat(s) will be made of each character in the form of a plot hook with a special in game effect once realised. A choice between several may be offered, and the player may choose to keep this secret.

A short character background is expected.

Mark I am looking to get some books in character and you tell me what I could get with cost. I am looking to spend 400 _ 500 gp. Also magic items costs are they the same as rangefinder?

Books are probably a standard item in the ph @ 25gp. Let me know if there is anything particular you want, as it's often the content that is costly.

The general 5th edition rule is that magic items aren't available for sale. However to reflect previous adventures you may select one uncommon item to begin the game with. It will be worth roughly 250-500gp depending what you pick.

If you want some minor stuff I may say yes as well, particularly if you could conceivable have made it/easily com across it.

...copy of 5th Ed dmg required for magic items. If there is something in particular you want and you can't get hold of a dmg, I can take a look for you.

I am looking to play a book worm researcher. So looking to have a good selection of thing but mainly on elementals and beasts. When I am back I will have a look and post any minor magic but likely I lot of my gp will go into the books due to character. Are we going to start at the emerald base?

Elementals are a fairly rare knowledge, so x3 cost. Beasts will be readily available.

There is a plot lead-in.

Can I confirm what people are playing? Luke, as a researcher are you rolling a wizard now?

Assuming we still have fighter / druid / druid I'm trying to decide between warlock and sorcerer. I suspect the warlock will be more offensive, but the sorcerer looks to be much more interesting. Also has "normal" spellcasting so I can play with the new options for casting at higher levels.

Frankly, at the moment a chaos sorcerer is looking more likely although I may talk myself into draconic sorcerer as I suspect it'll be more PBP friendly.

Tom I am going spell casting druid but the character is a sage. Playing her as a book worm so all amount the knowledge etc.

My placeholder is an angry wild shape Druid.. But really ill balance as required.

Herbs to heal by - 25gp. Will help you to identify her a in strange places, will require a short rest of study to identify unusual specimens.
Animal characteristics - 25gp, written by a city dwelling scientist, largely wrong.
History of the region - 25gp. Focus will be on succession of notable family lineages.
Trees - 25gp. Study of which trees are most suitable for ornamental estates and their upkeep.
How to Make traps - 25gp, but it won't give you any advantage
The price of things - 25gp, but it will be quite general.
Aberration weaknesses - 100gp. Will only help if you have time to study (i.e. For at least a short rest worth) after identifying an aberration, and that itself is not a straightforward matter.
Beasts to turn into - 25gp, it's a almanac of animal woodcuts, but it won't circumvent the wild shape rule.
The naughty naughty demons - 100gp. Similar to the aberration book.

Some of the books will be of no use to me but are there for characture flavour. Might think up some more book names :)

I haven't looked through the crafting rules as yet. The basic mention proficiency in the required tools. Will let you know more when I've looked it up.

The basic potion of healing takes 4 days to craft, costs 100gp in materials and heals 2d4+2.

..plus you need the relevant recipe for it..Which I'll let you have as it's probably the most ubiquitous magical item.

Making stuff in 5th is both easier and more difficult... There aren't any feat requirements, there is level, spell and proficiency requirements. Plus you can only make 25gp progress per day, so it takes ages!

I'm struggling with background at the moment. I'm considering some kind of bardy type (entertainer background, still sorcerer class). Goliaths are from the Frozen Hills, right? If you want we could be from the same tribe and have travelled down together. I'll pick a cold-based draconic ancestry and be some kind of skald.

Im going with the gnome arcane trickster, as i do like my small creatures and gnomes are awesome. Through my background (criminal) i get to swap out the 2nd thieves tools use for another tool and im thinking poison (anyone else thinking frostwillow 2?). I guess f im a frost gnome to tag along with the goliath and sorceror that makes a fitting route in... (ill be using forest, just moddifying it for background as required)

How does poison work as the players handbook doesnt have much details on creating using etc with poisons only that the poison kit makes this possible?

Welcome! Probably a good idea - you'll need to be able to edit your own character!

So does this mean that we no longer have a DM PC? At the moment I think the list is:

Same lineup, change of player rather than character crunch. Actually looks a pretty solid lineup!

@Matt - the rules for crafting are different, and a bit dumb for poisons if I'm honest. If you have proficiency with the kit you can craft as long as you have access to the ingredients and the kit. Can only make 25gp worth of progress each day of effort. which I means most poisons take ages to craft... If it's going to be a big part of your lineup we need to home brew.

@fallingdusk - yeah, you need to copy over so you can edit, plus you're still requiring fluff that both fits with the background and the campaign requirement.

Ok I shall bypass all the faff that poisons might entail and change background to outlander instead. seems more fitting with the ranger outdoorsy esk background we all need, and gives me a musical instrument over posions which seem more helpful tbh!
