I've got one of those reversable battlemaps, but it has 1,5" squares and hexes.

which system uses that?
D&D is on 1", always as far as I can tell.

My guess would be that it was aimed at clicky base collectors for use in TTRPG's. That's a complete shot in the dark though.

I think a 1.5 inch grid is roughly the size you would use for those plastic army men, when are about 2 inches tall or so.

But really, any game that uses a square grid can use a 1.5 inch square, as the only thing it changes is the size of the miniature used.

My group regularly plays on 1.5" mat. It works fairly well for Medium and Large creatures, especially with the tokens we use to indicate conditions. Huge creatures fit a bit too easily into a 2x2 area, and can be confused with Large as a result. Otherwise, it works quite well for us.

It could be for any number of things, but it will work just fine for the vast majority of RPGs that employ grid based stuff.

Mats are usually not printed to an exact 1" scale because most mini's used have bases that are larger than 1" dia. The actual size of the grid doesn't really matter. You can just say "One square equals five feet" (or what ever scale you need) and be done with it.
