Chronicles of the Nentir Vale
Chapter One: Of Kobolds and Kings

http://orig07.deviantart.net/5dd7/f/2015/230/3/2/european_medieval_village_by_klauspillon-d9667s2.jpg

Spring had come quickly to the Nentir Vale. The cold winds of winter have finally given way to warm breezes and the snow has melted away to reveal the vibrant new growth beneath. As always the spring rains have been heavy, leaving the roads and fields muddy and the streams and rivers swollen and rushing. The sky is a watery blue high above, with billowing clouds heavy with rain. In the mornings the sun struggles to dispell the gray haze of moisture in the air, and each evening a rolling mist settles over the land like a blanket. The silence of the winter has been replaced with the twittering songs of birds returning to the land, and everywhere the forests and fields have come alive with new life.

On the shore of Lake Nen, the sleepy village of Nenlast has begun to come alive as the early days of spring arrive. The farmers have begun the laborious tasks of cleaning and tilling their fields for the planting season, and the shepherds have once again moved their flocks of woolly sheep out onto the hills and meadows to graze. Already the first traders from Hammerfast have begun to arrive seeking smoked fish and furs in exchange for iron work and gold. With the traders come travelers. Farmers seeking new land to settle and priests on their yearly pilgrimage, offering the spring blessing of Corellon.

All those who visit Nenlast, and indeed many of the locals, eventually find themselves drawn to The Shepherd's Rest, the local tavern and the second largest building in the quiet hamlet, dwarfed only by the church of Erathis at the town's center. The Shepherd's Rest is a cozy two story building with wooden walls and a heavy thatched roof. A field stone chimney protrudes through the thick thatching to spread wood smoke to the wind, and an amber lantern hangs beside a hand painted sign above the door proclaiming the name of the establishment. The interior of the Shepherd's Rest is comfortably small, with a dozen round tables surrounded by simple wooden chairs, and low counter stretching across the wall opposite the door. The floor is covered by a carpet of hay, and the fresh smell mingles with the scent of pipe smoke, honey mead and baking bread. Behind the counter a comely young woman with dark hair and brown eyes, in a homespun dress and apron wipes copper pints with a clean rag, and she smiles at those who enter. A second girl, younger and with brilliant green eyes, moves back and forth among the tables, setting bowls of stew and plates of bread in front of the visiting traders, and occasionally disappearing through a swinging door into what must be the kitchen to retrieve more food.

Though it is still early in the afternoon, already some of the local farmers have begun to filter in to the Shepherd's Rest for drinks and to hear news from the traders on the state of the roads and the Vale beyond Nenlast. It is shaping up to be a busy evening at the Shepherd's Rest as five strangers make their appearance, unaware of the important part they are to play in the events that are about to unfold...

Journeying toward the Nentir Vale had meant travelling during winter. It was not something that Flawed enjoyed but, with a new sense of purpose, it was something she could endure. Less than a week into her travel she was fortunate enough to encounter a trader also heading north, to a town in the Vale called Nenlast. The elf being readily willing to have more company than his lone guard meant Flawed too benefited from someone to whom she could talk. She gathered that there was some familial connection between the two - daughter? niece? - but relations appeared strained.

Nonetheless, the small group made good time northwards and entered by way of Harkenwold. It transpired that the trader hoped to arrive at his destination just at the start of spring - "getting the early worm", he said, to Flawed's bemusement. By the time they reached Fiveleague House, their last comfort stop before Nenlast, the rains had started in earnest. As the road conditions deteriorated and her clothing was regularly saturated, Flawed started to miss when it had just been cold with the odd snow flurry.

Though she was uncertain about the necessity to travel so far to the north of the Vale, Flawed reasoned that it would be impolite not to see her companions to their destination. Leaving the Fiveleague, they persevered through the final leg of the journey and reached Nenlast while spring was still young and everything was damp. Bidding farewell to the man and his guard, Flawed stood in the town looking about. It seemed to be a modest fishing village. Quaint and unassuming. It might not be the greatest hub of activity but it was a starting point.

Flawed headed for the inn.

"That last job was the worst." Fara complained again. "The payment wasn't good and that fat, stupid priest brought us to this uninteresting, backwater town ..."

"You say the same about every job we take." Alegast smiled.

"Because is true." the little fairy pouted while crossing her arms, following her master silently through the air.

Alegast walked through Nenlast aimlessly, thinking about his current situation. It had been a season since they were "stuck" in the Nentir Vale, with no way to return home. Since that ill fated day he had crossed the boundaries between worlds, Alegast has been searching for a portal to the Feywild or a wizard who can create one, even if he didn't believe such an individual could exist in Nentir Vale. The vale seemed like a rather unimportant place, a forgotten region far away from all the big cities in the human world he had heard of in his years in Mithrendain. Until he was able to return home, Alegast was working as a mercenary to provide for both, he and his apathetic familiar spirit.

To succeed as a mercenary, however, one must get a name and a reputation, something that makes one more reliable to potential customers. And as he was a complete nobody in the vale, those customers were wary of hire him, making something as simple as getting a job a real challenge. Then one day, finally an opportunity arose. While he was in Mistwatch —the town in which he was living since he left the Feywild—, a priest of Corellon hired him to escort him in his pilgrimage through the vale.

"You're an eladrin!" said the priest. "Great Corellon will smile upon me if I hire you!".

That pilgrimage, two weeks long, ended when they reach Nenlast, at the other side of the valley.

Lost in thought, Alegast didn't realize in what moment he had reached the tavern.

"Well", he cheerfully said to Fara, "I'll rest before starting to look for a new job. And in a tavern you can always do both."

She was small for her age, lean and lanky just standing an inch above 4 feet. She looked like a very cute, bright blue eyed, golden haired child, the kind of image of innocence and youth that comes with being a child. Yet she was an enigma. For sometimes if one were to look more closely, looks could be deceiving. Her clothes, consisting of a light blue shirt, brown pants, a pair of black boots and a hooded green cloak which partially concealed a backpack was the first small indication. They looked and well used. Not newly bought from a tailor. Although they were not ragged so obviously she was not a street waif. The way she presented herself though was where the deceptiveness was. The girl seemed to have an air of a seasoned traveller. The way she moved, from her stride to her always seemingly alert senses indicated this. It wasn't so obvious but any thief or bandit would see right away that she was not an easy target, at least not in terms of pickpocketting or ambush. Besides, she kept her money pouch in her backpack. The 11 year old human child also seemed to be travelling alone.

It felt good to see winter finally over. Although she knew that it would still be chilly for a while so she made sure she dressed warmly anyways. Walking through the town, her destination was the Shepherd's Rest. She knew that if there was any place to learn of any interesting events happening around the area, the local tavern was the best place. Discreetly she entered, though not too discreetly to put any suspicion on her. The girl looked around and chose a table in the corner. Sitting with her back to the wall, she put her backpack between her legs and then noticed that the table was a little dirty. So with a wave of her hand over it it suddenly cleaned itself. She then waited for a server to take her order. At the same time she viewed the entire taproom, discreetly and unassuming, watching for any interesting things or curious happenings in the room.

At the edge of town a big dog slowly wanders out of the forest, sniffing at the air. It is an impressive specimen, large and athletic in appearance, with a well groomed coat of brown fur. It looks at the village of Nenlast from the top of a small hillock and swivels its ears atop its head. Tail held stiff and erect, the big dog turns its gaze to the slender ferret sitting casually in the grass beside him. He makes a series of low barks and growls, speaking to the ferret, "Human den. Smell fire, sheep, men, women, children, mud. Good food and drink. We go?" the dog asks, his voice gruff to the perked ears of the little ferret.

Ferrilyn, in the form of a ferret, gazes down at the village as a smile plays across her face, "Oh definitely. I've had nothing but berries and nuts to eat for the past three weeks and I'm dying for a good, strong drink. I was starting to think this forest went on forever," she comments, glancing over her shoulder back the way they had come. The pair had emerged roughly a month ago through a fairy gate from the Feywild into a remote part of the Winterbole Forest, and had spent the past few weeks searching for some sign of civilization. Looking down on Nenlast, Ferret could feel her excitement rising. She bounded over to Tempest and climbed swiftly up the blink dog's hind leg to settle herself on his back, and she waved one furry little foreleg in a charge motion, "Onward! To food and fun!" she giggles with delight as Tempest heads down into the village.

The pair wander through the streets for a while, taking in the sights and only drawing a few curious looks from the locals who no doubt wondered why a ferret was riding on the back of a dog. After a bit of exploration, they arrive at the Shepherd's Rest, and Ferret scrambles down from Tempest's back, "Alright. I don't think they are going to let you inside. So you wait here and I'll see if I can nick us a little something to eat," she winks and scurries through the door under the feet of a farmer. She pauses just inside the door long enough to look around, then presses herself against the wall and follows it around the room toward the kitchen. She stops, however, when she spots a human child sitting by herself, obviously much to young to be in a place like this.

Curiosity gets the better of the pixie, as it usually does, and she scampers closer to get a better look. Finding an empty chair near the girl, she climbs up and perches herself on the back to gaze at her, little ferret ears twitching and dark eyes blinking.

The bustle of the Shepherd's Rest is low and somewhat comforting. At one table a pair of farmers relax with pints of honey mead, discussing the new season's crop rotations, while nearby two tables have been pulled together to accommodate a group of traders who are telling stories of the road to a pair of local men. In one corner three men in furs, likely local hunters, are deeply involved in a game of cards, and silver coins flicker as they are passed across the table.

The green eyed serving girl spots Jessica taking a seat against the wall and she glides over gracefully to greet her, "Well hello there dear. Are you here by yourself?" she smiles kindly and sets a glass of water on the table, "My name is Annesta. Can I get you anything to eat?" the woman casually glances around, brushing her hair behind a slightly pointed ear, and then notices the ferret perched on a nearby chair, "Oh! How cute. Is this little fella yours dear?" she asks Jessica, since the ferret seemed too tame and docile to be wild.

Not far away, the brown eyed woman greets Alegast and Flawed individually as they enter and take seats at the bar, "Hello travelers. Welcome to the Shepherd's Rest. My name is Jenna. What can I get for you?" she smiles brightly at each of them in turn and waits for their orders.

Flawed took in the relaxed atmosphere of the inn and headed for a small table. The talk was casual and there was only the occasional voice raised, largely in mirth, as far as she could tell. All things considered it was welcoming and comfortable. She arranged herself carefully on a stool, making sure her tail was out of the way and her backpack completely underneath the table. Hoping she wasn't to receive much negative attention, she looked around the common room once more. She noted others who seemed nearly as out of place as she herself: a small girl and her ferret, and what seemed to be an elf traveler.

Before she could wonder too much - or, indeed, stare - a waitress approached. Flawed returned the smile with a brief one of her own. "Good day, Jenna. Perhaps some bread and cheese with a cup of ale? Something simple, at any rate." Flawed replied, her voice firm and hinting at her education. She pulled off her traveling gloves as she spoke and laid them on the table. Another thought occurred to her before the waitress could step away. "Also, I don't suppose you have any rooms available to rent?"

Jenna nods at the order and turns to fill a copper pint with foaming ale which she then sets in front of Flawed. The brew is dark and smells of hops and herbs. While Flawed samples the ale, Jenna disappears into the kitchen for a moment and returns with a wooden plate holding a half loaf of freshly baked bread and few thick slices of goat cheese. She sets the plate down and smiles, ""There you are dear. That's one gold for the meal and drink," She waits for the payment and quickly drops the coin into an iron bound box behind the bar. When Flawed asks about a room Jenna frowns, "Oh dear. I'm afraid all of our rooms are taken. With the traders in town we fill up quick. I can offer you a bit of floor space in the stables. It isn't much, but it's warm and dry," she smiles apologetically, "You could ask at the church. They sometimes let traveler's spend the night within their walls if they are willing to make an offering to Erathis," she offers helpfully.

Alegast studied the place with a glance. Farmers, traders, and a few ones that looked like hunters. And among them, a pair of individuals that were out of place: a little girl with a curious ferret; and a tiefling, maybe an adventurer like him.

Traders were the best option to get a quick job, so he chose a table near theirs.

"A mug of ale and hot soup, sweetheart." he smirked, talking in a very bad Common, winking at the waitress when she came to his table.

"Sweetheart?" Fara raised an eyebrow, talking to Alegast in the arcane language only a familiar spirit and his master can understand.

"And something to my little friend here. Maybe a crumb of bread or something very small..." added the eladrin, glancing at Fara mockingly.

Mal

Mal Oakengrass Jr. was a short halfling with thick muscles forged in the fires of combat and duty. He had been up and down most of the Nentir Vale over the many years he served in the Fallcrest Militia and in Karat's Troupe. He'd never come to this sleepy little village before. Caravans always preferred traveling to larger settlements, where there was a market for their expensive wares. Mal wanders around Nenlast taking the sights in. He makes sure to sit on the shores of Lake Nen and just watch the lake for a while. It was the largest body of water he'd ever seen and, honestly, he was a little awestruck by it. The battlemind was never a very good swimmer, he preferred the sturdiness of the earth beneath his feet to the unpredictability of water-based travel - especially swimming. He had been teased by the others in the Fallcrest Militia about not wanting to go into rivers. Mal always laughed it off by saying, "Halflings simply don't like swimming." It was a lie, Mal knew plenty of halflings that could swim, but it was a convenient false truth, one that spared him the embarrassment of drowning in front of his friends.

His shoulders ached and groaned, they were not used to the burden of carrying plate armor. The halfling decided it was time to sit down and enjoy some food, and maybe a spot of ale. The little battlemind headed over to the local tavern - the Shepherd's Rest. It was a quaint little establishment. It kind of reminded Mal of his father's tavern, only this one was designed for big folk. Most things in life were. Small people were always forced to make due in a world not sized for them.

Mal saddles up to the counter and asks, "Greetings! My belly growls and my throat aches. What do you serve that could quench my thirst and quiet my stomach?

Jessica already noticed the ferret really. And she knew that it was somewhat different. Perhaps it was a druid in disguise. She knew that druids could change to animal form. But first she decides to answer the waittress first.

Yes please I would like to have some beef stew. And maybe a room for the night if possible. If not may I sleep here?, looking at the ferret she adds, No he's not mine. I don't know where he came from.

Continued to watch the young girl until after the serving girl left, but she was proving to be less interesting than the pixie had hoped. Starting to feel bored she scrambled back down to the floor and followed after the serving girl, heading for the bar where she could smell good, strong ale. Finding an empty stool Ferret climbs up to the seat and raises herself up to place her forelegs on the bar top to look around. Her eyes come to rest on the tiefling who had just been given a pint of the nice smelling ale, and the little pixie in ferret form squeaks and climbs up on the bar, sneaking along toward the pint while the tiefling woman was speaking with the bar tender. She was just about there when a voice draws her attention. A voice with a distinct fey accent.

Turning to see the eladrin seated nearby ordering food, Ferret's heart leaps in her small chest and her eyes grow wide. She hadn't seen another fey since leaving the feywild, and she was too keen on seeing one now. She regards him with a small measure of nervous fear, wondering if he might be an agent of Clan Sable come to find her and drag her back. Her quest for ale was forgotten, and she didn't even think to hide herself now, just sitting motionless on the bar top a short distance from the tiefling woman, staring at the eladrin and trying to come up with a plan to escape if he was indeed there for her.

Grimacing faintly at Jenna's suggestion, Flawed nodded slowly. She'd had... mixed experiences with churches and temples in the past. It wasn't the specific religion itself, of course, but rather the individual clerics. Some held her blood against her in either open hostility or thinly veiled suspicion. And there had been some wonderfully welcoming ones too. As with any place, she supposed, though inns tended to be more accommodating if coin was involved.

Speaking of which... My coin will not go far if a small meal costs so much. She tried some of the cheese and found it adequate. Chewing, Flawed looked pensive. I will require some paying work...

She was slow to notice that the ferret had started making its way toward her mug. By now, it appeared frozen, perhaps aware it had been spotted. Following the animals gaze, she saw that it was staring at the elf. In turn, she studied the man. On closer inspection, she realised she had been mistaken. An eldarin. As well I corrected my misconception now rather than fumble into an apology should we converse later. Looking back at the ferret, she wondered about its behaviour. It certainly seemed less concerned with being noticed by her despite its proximity to her food. A familiar, perhaps? Or maybe I am simply reading too much into things.

Sighing slightly to herself, she plucked a small piece off her bread and placed it carefully near the animal.

Catching the movement of the tiefling woman in the corner of her eye, Ferret turned to regard her as the bit of bread is set on the bar top next to her. She blinks dark eyes, then glances back to the eladrin, who seemed to just be ordering food. The little pixie in ferret form takes a deep breath to steady herself, "Well, if he's here for me I'll just have to run or set him on fire," she thinks to herself, and turns her attention to the food she had just been offered.

She looks up at the tiefling woman and gives a little squeak, picking up the bread and nibbling on it as she settles herself next to the woman's plate. She eats ravenously, enjoying the change from the constant diet of berries and nuts she had been existing on for the past few weeks. When she finishes she thinks of Tempest waiting outside the tavern and wonders how she is going to get enough food to feed the blink dog as well. Deciding she ought to see how much she could get from the tiefling she leans in and sniffs at the cheese, then at the pint of ale before looking up at the woman and squeaking again.

She could of course reveal her true form and simply ask for food, but there was no telling how the people here would react to the sight of a pixie. Besides, fooling them was far more fun!

"Great! Now we have a rival" sighed.

"Well, you don't have to worry about that, master. You're popular as always" muttered Fara staring to the tiefling with suspicion.

Bemused, Flawed watched the ferret nibble at the bread. T'would appear I am making a new friend. Finished with the morsel, the animal started eyeing up the rest of her meal. Who is determined to see with how much of my meal I am willing to part. She took a sip of her ale and put it down a bit farther away before breaking off a piece of cheese for the ferret. "I am likely only encouraging you, am I not?" She murmured, mostly to herself, as she left the cheese on the table.

Looking up, Flawed wondered if the little girl was missing her pet - if, indeed, that was their relationship. After all, it could easily transpire that the ferret had been running the same "scam" on her...

AS food and drinks are ordered and the afternoon begins to wane and the early hours of evening steal over the village of Nenlast, many of the traders finish their meals and drift up the tavern stairs toward their rooms for the night. The local farmers linger around the tables, and more locals, shepherds, fisherman, merchants and others, begin to arrive for an evening drink. The tavern becomes a bit more lively as the locals swap gossip and stories, and one young man near the bar even produces a wooden flute whittled from a length of hard wood, and begins to play a little tune. It is a pleasant, friendly atmosphere.

Then quiet suddenly the tavern door swings open with a loud BANG!, flying wide and striking against the wall. The chatter in the room dies down, and the flute player stops abruptly, all eyes turning to regard the stout figure in the door. It is a dwarf, broad shouldered and barrel chested, with a long black beard tucked into his belt and streaked with lines of iron grey. He wears a tri-corner hat on his head and chews on the stem of an unlit wooden pipe in his mouth as he glares around at the locals. Everyone seems to make a studious examination of their drinks and the tavern floor, some seeming guilty as they avoid making eye contact with the dwarf. The surely looking dwarf grunts and stomps across the tavern, one heavy boot and one wooden peg thumping on the wooden floor. He pulls himself up onto a stool at the bar and Jenna immediately sets a full wooden flagon of dark ale in front of him. The dwarf nods his thanks, glares once more around at the locals, and grunts again, grumbling and busying himself with getting drunk.

Slowly the patrons return to their conversations, but the atmosphere in the tavern has grown noticeably sullen. The flute player puts his instrument away, and more than a few people finish their drinks and make a quick exit looking ashamed.

"Well... if you want to talk with that scary dwarf, go ahead. I'd not recommend you to follow that course of action, however... "

"Of course you wouldn't" he smirked.

And with a modest gesture, he asked for Jenna.

"What can you tell me about this dwarf, honey?" Alegast discretely asked with a smile when she comes over his table.

Seeing Alegast waving for her attention, Jenna moved from behind the bar to speak with the Eladrin. At his question she sighs softly, "Oh. That's Flint Ironwick," she explains quietly so as not to be overheard, "He came to Nenlast about two months ago with a few of his kin to scout the hills east of town for suitable mining sites. We all thought they was a bit mad to go traipsing around the hills in the snow. But they insisted. I think it was some matter of personal honor," she shakes her head a bit, "Anyway. He found himself some copper, and he got some of the local boys to help him set up a camp to start mining. But something happened out there. He came back to town injured about three weeks ago and said the mine had been taken and the others were dead," she looks at the dwarf sadly, "He tried to raise the militia to retake the mine, but those boys aren't warriors, and everyone is too scared to try."

"Oh, I see. Thanks, sweetheart" he replied. "I presume you don't have any rooms available, right?"

But as he asked, he was looking towards the dwarf with interest. With luck, he thought, this Ironwick fella has enough coin to hire some mercenaries, him included. Even if the promise of a payment wasn't certain, retaking the mine could greatly benefit him. Nenlast seemed like an isolated place, but reputation can be earned everywhere.

Mal

The halfling was sipping on his alcohol of choice when the dwarf sauntered in. Mal couldn't help but notice the cataclysmic mood change that rippled across the tavern. Clearly this dwarf was important. Clearly, he had a story. Clearly, he was someone the battlemind would desire to get to know. Mal slides over a few stools (well, slides as best a three foot tall halfling wearing plate can slide) and comes to rest a stool away from the dwarf. With his "manly voice" the diminutive battlemind asks, "I couldn't help but notice the fact that the locals seem to recognize you. Are you famous?" With his words spoken, Mal motions for the barmaiden to poor the dwarf a second mug, "This one is on me, friend."

Flawed passed the afternoon sitting quietly, feeding herself and the ferret for a time before settling back slightly to enjoy the tavern's atmosphere. More locals arrived and, with none seeming to give her much mind, she was quite content - particularly when a youth added some music to the air. An expensive afternoon, to be certain, but really very pleasant.

It did not last as a surly dwarf barging in brought the quiet merriment to a crashing halt. Flawed watched as the patrons fell silent, gazes averted, and the new arrival trounced up to the bar. She noted the eladrin waving a barmaid over and the two seemed to converse quietly. About the dwarf? I wonder what information is to be had... Making a slightly uncharacteristically impulsive decision, Flawed rose and approached the eladrin, a pleasant smile on her face.

"Might I sit, sir?"

Ferret was enjoying a second helping of cheese and twitching her ears to the flute playing when the dwarf suddenly burst in and spoiled the mood of the whole tavern. She sits back and watches as he stomps to the bar and tilts her head curiously, "Wow. That is one grumpy dwarf. Wonder what his story is," she was considering approaching the dwarf until she sees Jenna abandon the bar to speak with the eladrin, leaving the barrels of ale and mead unguarded. The little pixie in ferret form nearly squeals with joy and scrambles over the bar in excitement. With no one behind the bar to stop her, she pushes open the spigot on a keg and drinks her fill as the amber ale spills out, taking big gulps and getting her face drenched in alcohol. Feeling content, the eladrin and the dwarf no longer on her mind, Ferret sighs and hops down, making her way lazily across the floor toward the table where the tiefling and the eladrin were talking, "Guess I'll see what's going on," she thinks as she reaches the tiefling's leg and gives the woman's pants a tug to get her attention and hopefully a hand up onto the table.

"Flawed, please," she replied, taking a seat. Her trouser leg caught on something and, glancing down, she sighed softly. Given that I am reasonably certain I left a plate with cheese crumbs behind, I am becoming increasingly certain you are more than a mere ferret... Nonetheless, she reached an arm down for the ferret to climb up onto the tabletop.

Returning her attention to the eladrin with an apologetic smile, she gestured discreetly toward the dwarf. "Might I be correct in assuming that you sought information from the barmaid regarding the... recent arrival? I would be interested to know the reason behind the unwelcome change in this establishment's atmosphere, should you wish to share - depending, of course, on whether the barmaid was in a position to enlighten you."

"Then, she indeed is really an adventurer", Alegast thought. But, that was ok. If the mines problem was big enough to scaring all the people in town, the dwarf would need an adventurer band, no just a lone mercenary.

"You're very perceptive, miss Flawed. You can call me Alegast. And yeah, I was requesting information about our dwarven fella, Flint Ironwick they call him. Seems he needs some help to reclaim the mine nearby Nenlast, and I was about to offer him my sword. If you want, you can accompany us" he said.

Fara was pouting the whole time, glaring at the tiefling with crossed arms.

At the same time, the halfling tried to talk with the dwarf...

At the bar the dwarf known as Flint barely turns to regard the halfling sliding onto a stool next to him. He scowls when Mal asks if he is famous and he grumbles angrily, "No. Get yerself away from me," his words are almost a growl. He gulps down the last of the ale in his flagon and thumps it on the bar heavily, signaling for Jenna to refill it, "I don't want yer coin or yer company," he states, refusing any drink the halfling tries to offer him.

Mal

The halfling is shocked when the dwarf refuses to talk to him. Mal is not accustomed to people shoving him away. Years of work at his father's tavern had given Mal quite the silver tongue... "Dwarves," thinks the battlemind, "Always grumpy." Mal swivels around in his stool and looks out at the tavern as a whole to see if there were any other "adventurers" loitering about. Perhaps they would have better luck than the battlemind at getting the dwarf to talk - or - better yet, maybe they would have a job that required the addition of a stalwart warrior.

The halfling scans the room. Most everyone is a farmer or a villager... But there were two individuals that stood out to Mal. The first was a tiefling and the second an elf, maybe an eladrin. They did not look the type to toil in fields and they did not carry themselves like the other locals. Mal hops off his stool, barely grunting a farewell to the dwarf. The battlemind saunters over to the table where his two marks are sitting next to one another. Without asking permission, the former-mercenary takes a seat and says, "The name is Mal Oakengrass, Jr. I am betting you, like me, have taken an interest in the dwarf. I can assure you he is as grumpy and foul tempered as the rest of his race. Even the offer of free alcohol did not loosen his lips. What are you lot drinking?" Mal leans over the table to peak into their steins, "Ah." The halfling catches the eye of the barmaiden and asks for two more.

Jessica has for the most part been minding her own business. She is not one to get involved with other people's business without good reason. Such as if they truly needed help. But so far there was nothing for her to do but eat her stew and relax. The rather loud entrance by the dwarf merely raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Then she heard about the dwarf's problems. But then she sees the dwarf's rather rude reaction and frowns. So she waits and sees.

Flawed shrugged. "It seemed a reasonable induction based on seeing you converse quietly with the barmaid following the dwarf's entrance." She paused. "Though that is perhaps not the most pertinent part of your statement, Mr Alegast." Smiling apologetically, she continued. "I would be interested. It so happens that I am in the market for some employment in the area and particularly should the coin be of more than a modest amount. Not that that should suggest I am especially mercenary or overly fond of the sight of gold," she added hastily. "Rather, I have found the cost of staying here to be higher than anticipated and the coin would thus be a welcome addition to my purse." Flawed happened to glance at Fara and noted the creature's expression. "It occurs to me that perhaps I am talking to much. I trust you and your companion are not exceptionally bothered by this. As stated, I am interested in accompanying you and it would be an immense shame were we to start off on the wrong-"

At this point, a halfling unexpectedly claimed one of the unoccupied seats, interrupting her and introducing himself. Rude but seems affable. I would also not be adverse to a free beverage... He appeared to have tried talking to Ironwick himself with little success. As they waited for the barmaid to approach, Flawed considered this new data. "Perhaps Mr Ironwick is too accustomed to having his requests for aid fall on deaf ears and now rebuffs genuine interest so as not to be forced into any potentially fruitless emotional investment." She glanced over at the individual in question. "I would imagine the situation is not to improve should he continue drinking." Returning her attention to Alegast and Mal, she clasped her hands in front of her on the table, mindful of the ferret and Mal's companion. "I would be amenable to approaching him as a group, should that interest either or both of you."

Ferret scrambled up Flawed's arm when it was offered and she jumps onto the table top. Still feeling wary of the eladrin she makes a point of sitting as far from him as she can, settling herself near the arm of the tiefling woman. While the pair talk, she looks from one to the other, following the conversation with a flick of her ears, "So these are adventurers. And they are planning to hep the grumpy dwarf retake his mine in return for gold," she ponders the situation while scratching behind her ear with one hind paw, "This could be interesting, and maybe if I lend a hand I can get a share of the gold. I'll need it if I'm going to make this world my home," she shifts a little, debating whether or not she should reveal herself and make introductions.

Then quite suddenly a halfling joins the table, sitting alarmingly close to the little pixie in ferret form. Letting out a squeak she dashes up Flawed's arm to sit on the tiefling's shoulder and glare at the rude halfling man. She chatters at him in ferret tongue, running through a litany of curses that he wouldn't be able to understand, but it made her feel better.

The halfling recoils as the ferret seems to hiss at him and slither about like a wild, angry animal. Reflexively, the battlemind grips the hilt of his axe. Thankfully Flawed breaks the tension by talking to Mal in a considerate tone, "Indeed. I am in need of coin and people like that dwarf often have troubles that plague them, troubles that often require a quick mind and a heavy axe to solve, troubles that people like the dwarf pay good money to have resolved for them. Perhaps if we approached as a group, we could see what troubles have befallen him? Worse comes to worse, we get some drinks, bed down for the night, then part ways, none the worse for wear."

As Jessica finished eating her stew, she neatly set it aside with the cutlery inside the bowl. Then she reached into her backpack and pulled out a medium sized book. It had the engraving of a teddy bear on it but seemed somewhat different from most children's books. For one thing it was meticulously leather bound and somewhat larger, not to mention it had too many pages. If one were knowledgeable enough one could almost mistake it for a spellbook. The girl began leafing through its pages and began reading.

Momentarily startled by the ferret running up onto her shoulders, Flawed managed to catch herself and was able to nod in agreement with the Alegast and Mal. The halfling wasted no time in going back to Ironwick but Flawed found herself taking greater care in rising lest the ferret be dislodged and injured. Once again bemused, she regarded the animal out of the corner of her eye. "I do believe we will need to get better acquainted before this is all said and done," she said, for the ferret's ears alone. "Proper introductions should be made." She focused back on the dwarf and the task at hand. "Of course, I do hope my suspicions are correct and I am not merely speaking to myself..." she added.

Stopping at Mal's side, she mentally prepared some remarks that might aid in convincing the dwarf to employ them. The halfling was quick to speak, however, and Flawed was impressed. A solid opening gambit. If it is with this approach he failed earlier, we may be in some serious difficulty... Choosing to remain silent for the moment, she adopted a serious look that she felt spoke of her capabilities.

The newly improvised team arrived to the dwarf, and the halfling spoke with an incredibly glibness. "This guy Mal is a bag full of surprises. I was right when I saw him as a potential rival...", Alegast thought. Then, he saw Flawed talking with the ferret. It was a curious pet. Or perhaps a familiar like Fara?

Speaking of which, she followed his master, but it was more concerned about Flawed than nothing else.

Flawed considered the dwarf's question. Is a small display of magic appropriate? It seems like it would be a trifle vulgar. She pursed her lips. Like flexing one's muscles, only more colourful. Deciding against something obvious, she crossed her arms and gave a nod to support Alegast and Mal.

"I believe my companions and I are worldly travelers and, as we gather you may require some aid, would be pleased to render assistance." She relaxed her expression a little more and ventured a confident smile.

Ferret settled herself on the tiefling woman's shoulder as the small group made their way over to the dwarf, Flawed? Was that what she had called herself? These tiefling's had such strange names. The little pixie in ferret form regards her new friend when Flawed speaks to her about proper introductions, and there is a twinkle in her little black eyes, "Smarter than she looks. But then these big folk would have to be," she giggles to herself, which sounds like a soft chittering to everyone else.

She perches with one paw up on Flawed's ear as she listens to the conversation with the dwarf, her ferret ears flicking back and forth between the speakers while they work out the deal. When the little girl approaches and offers to join the group Ferret tilts her head and regards the child curiously, "What a strange girl. Why would such a young thing want to venture into danger beside this band? These tall folk are fascinating," she looks down at Flawed and the rest, waiting for their reactions.

As Mal was working out the details of the deal with Ironwick, Flawed turned to regard the newcomer. It was a child. What on earth? She glanced around briefly, wondering if the girl's parents or guardians were nearby. Nobody seemed to coming to join them, however. Looking back at the girl, she realised it was the same child she'd seen in the ferret's company earlier. It would appear the animal is not her pet, then. Though, given she claims arcane ability, I should not rule out the possibility of my newest and 'closest' companion being her familiar. The creature had been chittering to itself happily and was now resting a paw on her ear. It was a strange, though not unpleasant, sensation.

"Hello, Jessica," she said, smiling at the girl. "Nice to meet you. Am I correct in thinking that you just expressed a desire to accompany us on the work of which we are currently negotiating the details?" Glancing back, it seemed Mal, at least, was intent on engaging with the dwarf. I hope this will not be overly condescending. Though I fear it will. Flawed took a small step away, towards Jessica. "I am afraid I am not certain that the task with which we desire to assist the good dwarf is entirely appropriate for one so young as yourself. I do not doubt that you feel capable of taking on much danger but it would be remiss of me not to say that I am concerned with your eagerness."

Pausing for a moment, Flawed decided to crouch down to Jessica's level. "There are many more things for which someone of your age and abilities would better suited. Though I appreciate I am making presumptions already, I will not go so far as to make any suggestions, merely reiterate that volunteering for employment that entails unknown danger might not be in your best long-term interest." She glanced back at Mal, Alegast and Ironwick, wondering what their feelings on the matter were.

Mal has handling the dwarf like a professional. It was a good choice to work with him instead of against him, as the eladrin had thought initially. All seemed to go smoothly for a little while, when Jessica approached them. Alegast thought the girl was out of place when he first saw her, it was weird to see such a child alone, with no parents or someone who cared for her. But her claims about being an spellcaster where amusing, and troubling.

"I don't think we should let a child undertake this sort of task", said Alegast when he felt Flawed's gaze, his characteristic smirk vanished by the confusion. "I don't mind if our employer need an assistant or something, thought..."

Was three weeks back the devils set on us at night, yappin and growlin. We gave'em a fight, but me an' me kin are miners, not soldiers," Flint looks angry and he bangs his clenched fist against the bar top, "Dungar an' Yorin was killed in the fightin. Saw'em fall meself. When Jessica approaches and offers to join the group, Flint looks at the girl in disbelief, "Ye ain't nothin but a slip o' girl," he grunts, shaking his head, "Ye'd do best to run along home lass. This ain't no work fer a wee one like yerself."

Jessica was again faced with one of the problems of being a child. Overprotectiveness. Not that she did not understand why they were like this. She was a child after all. But it could be damn annoying sometimes. And she hated staying in orphanages. Not because she hated being with other children, but because she loved travelling. She had gotten so used to adventuring, albeit she was still used to travelling under the protection of her now dead father, that she could not think of any other life to lead.

Well both my parents are dead so I have no other place to go. And I do kind of need the coin.

Mal

The halfling smiled as he listened intently to the dwarf's tale. It would be a difficult first mission but one Mal though he and his new friends could reasonably complete. He looked sideways at the small girl, wondering why someone so young was so eager to risk her life. He thought of his own daughter, Sharis, and what he would do if she ever wanted to become an adventurer... No. No. No. Never. These were the words that immediately sprung to mind. Mal did not wish to sour the deal he was making with the dwarf so, rather than make a kerfuffle, he decided it was best to allow his new friends to handle the girl in their own way.

Turning back to their patron, the battlemind stated, "That is quite a tale, Master Flint. We would be happy to help rectify this problem for you. I am from Fallcrest and am thus no stranger to adventurers, or their requisite payment. I believe this quest would run about seventy five gold. I know, I know, it sounds like a lot - and it is - but you are paying for quality. I myself was a militiaman in Fallcrest and a member of Leris Karat's Troupe. I am sure you have heard of both, so you know I am highly trained soldier with years of experience. Although my new friends are, well... Hmm..." He turns around and looks over the two adults and then nods approvingly, "Yes, I believe I can whip them into fighting shape by dawn's first light. So what do you say, do we have a bargain?"

While both Alegast and Ironwick seemed to be largely in agreement with her regarding Jessica, Flawed noted that Mal was avoiding the issue. Simply focusing on his negotiation or is there, perhaps, more to his reticence...? A dislike of children? Or humans? No. Such speculation is not productive and merely serves to distract you from dealing with an issue for which, by engaging, you have taken a modicum of responsibility. Not terribly pleased with this, Flawed turned back to the young girl.

She studied her for a long moment. Attired for travel. No apparent guardians and claims her parents are deceased. Likely true. Thus, she must have arrived here more or less on her own. Does not seem malnourished; speaks clearly and with an educated tongue. Precocious. Thus, her claims of arcane ability are to be given some measure of credence. Not lacking in an ability to survive...

Taking a deep breath, Flawed met Jessica's eyes. "I am sorry to hear of your parents' passing. That cannot have been easy. Additionally, I appreciate that you feel that there are a limited number of options available to you." She ventured a sympathetic smile. "And having coin is certainly a necessity with prices as high as they are." Flawed looked away. "That said, I cannot, in good conscience agree to you accompanying us on this task. Master Ironwick here has had employees killed. It is manifestly too dangerous," she finished firmly.

However, the conversation with the child mage was a different story, and the others made Ferret tilt her head, "I think that's rather mean. Why shouldn't she be allowed to go? It's her own choice, and she seems confident in her ability to take care of herself," the pixie folds her little furry fore legs and considers the situation, "It's not like any of them are her guardians, and she needs the money just as much as any of us from the sound of it," giving a little nod as she makes a decision, Ferret leaps from Flawed's shoulder onto Jessica's head and looks back up at the tiefling woman, chittering in ferret tongue to make her disapproval of Flawed's decision clear.

Lends weight to the theory that it is intelligent. Potentially still a familiar. Not sure what it expects from me other than being overly harsh to Jessica...

The negotiations concluded between Mal and Ironwick. Noting the handshake between the two men, Flawed sighed and straightened. Adjusting her outfit to a more comfortable position, she strode back over to her table to retrieve her belongings. The mood of the tavern was still subdued and she studiously ignored any glances the other patrons sent her way. It is the right decision.

Turning back to Mal and Alegast, she saw they were attempting to converse with the girl as well. Flawed stepped up behind them, ready to go, but said nothing. Nothing about this outcome pleases me but no scenario occurs to me that would make having Jessica accompany us palatable. She grimaced briefly. No one notices the ferret slip into the kitchen through the closing door, and she finds herself in a warm room that smells of the rich scent of baking bread and drying herbs. Unlike the common room, the kitchen floor is made of stone and swept relatively clean, with only a few dropped vegetable peelings around the large table that dominates the center of the room. A large cooking hearth stands on one wall, it's fire warming a round iron pot that hangs above it, as well as providing heat to a brick oven built into the wall beside it. A variety of pots hang from hooks mounted above the main table, and bundles of fresh and dry herbs hang from the low rafters. At the back of the kitchen are two doors. One is a dutch door, it's upper half hanging open to let in the cool evening breeze while the bottom remains firmly closed. Not gone to feast while it is unattended. Given its previously friendly demeanour - something which strengthens my belief that it is more than a simple creature - it seems unlikely it is up to anything particularly malicious. Mischievous, perhaps. A brief smile touched her lips at the thought.

While awaiting the outcome of her new colleagues' ruminations, she again looked around the inn. I wonder is it likely that a musician will brave the rather tense atmosphere to supply us with some rustic melody? Certainly none seems forthcoming, though I can hardly blame the patrons. Between Mr Ironwick and ourselves, their usual evening of camaraderie and relaxation has been considerably upturned.
