Hello GITP!

It is a trope as old as D&D - a soldier that is all muscle and no brains: the Big Stupid Fighter (BSF). A big lunk with an even bigger sword, this guy dishes out and takes damage, working more like a lawn mower than a cunning warrior.

So why not a fighter archetype that uses Intelligence? Sure, we have the Eldritch Knight, which uses Int as a casting stat, but that doesn't really make them a smarter fighter mechanically. And we have the Battlemaster, who uses their tactics to control and manipulate battle... but this can be played mechanically with Int as a total dump stat, just making a BSF with extra dice.

So with that in mind, I present The Assailant, a non-caster Fighter archetype that heavily uses Intelligence. It may be a little MAD and a little unbalanced, so please let me know what everyone's feedback is.

Surgical Precision (3rd Level) - After you have confirmed a melee hit that is not a critical, you can roll a Investigation (Intelligence) check as part of your attack action. If the roll is higher than the target's AC, the hit is automatically a critical hit. You can use this ability once per short rest. At level 10, this becomes two per short rest.

Quick Thinker (Level 7) - You can now add your Intelligence modifier to your AC.

Eye for Detail (Level 10) - You gain Proficiency in Investigation. If you already have Proficiency, you now gain twice the Proficiency bonus, as the Rogue's Expertise ability.

Tactical Terror (Level 15) - If any enemy attempts to make a movement within your movement speed range, you can use your reaction to move to the nearest unoccupied free space within melee range of that enemy and make one melee attack. If the attack hits, the target's move speed is reduced to zero for one round. This can be done even if you had used your entire movement speed already in the round. You cannot use Surgical Precision with this attack. If your movement would provoke an enemy's AoO, you can ignore this as if you had taken the Disengage action, unless the enemy has the ability to make an AoO with the Disengage action, such as the Sentinel feat.

Bloody Intellect (Level 18) - You can now use Surgical Precision once per round.
