So... I'm see a lot of Spanish Speakers that read the comic and maybe be a good idea have a thread were we can discuss things in our language or help with English jokes or simply meet OOTS fans across Latin America an Spain.
Of course, because this is an English language Forum, everyone just can post in english as well...

... me causó mucha pena su muerte... más que nada porque aún exagerando sus defectos, no dejaba de "rolear" bien a su personaje. Espero que en algún futuro encuentre, si no la redención, al menos el entendimiento de sus crímenes..

Y sobre el comic en general... que bueno que se está poniendo!!!!

Si, estoy de acuerdo con la muerte de Miko. La mezcla de humor y tristeza me reforzó la habilidad del Gigante. Es sabe latín, no?

Pero, Miko fue una de mis carácteres favoritas. Por lo menos, ella ha muerto con honor, en una manera. Su muerte causará algunos problems con su redención, pero en un mundo lleno con magia, no puedo decir nada. Es a la voluntad del autor. Ojalá que ella encuentre un futuro bueno, porque lo desierve.

I really hate to crash your party (especially since the only spanish I know is no hablo espa��ñol), but we've been asked a couple of times not to use foreign languages on these boards because the mods won't know what's being said. It's a shame, though, because some really great conversations can come up.

Well, rest assured nothing bad/wrong was said in the first few paragraphs, just stuff about Miko and such.

I'm from the Republic of Panama and I learnt most of my english from comics, magazines and movies, so it's mostly conversational english, but I would've enjoyed posting away on a thread in my native language. My vocabulary is decent but there's lot's of stuff I feel I can explain or understand much better in spanish.

I've got the opposite: I'm a native English speaker, but I like to practice my Spanish (reading and writing) conversationally. Believe it or not, message boards are useful for that.

Maybe I just havn't been here long enough, but I don't actually remmember any other posts about this.

Also, I think this is a rather cool idea, but maybe you should handle it by making a free messageboard and asking The Giant to maybe sticky a thread about it's existance or something of the like. I personally speak french well... semi-fluently and understand exactly what your talking about when you say that it is hard to express what your trying to say in a secondary language, no matter how well you speak it there are some differences that you can't quite catch on to.

There's not much to be done about conversing in other languages, forum rules are forum rules, but concerning the joke-understanding, the "Jokes you didn't get" thread is perfect for that. There have been plenty of questions already that have been about linguistic/cultural misunderstanding of a reference.

A ver. No sé como "sneak attack" se ha traducido al español. Yo diría "ataque sorpresa." (Quizas "emboscada," pero no es exactamente lo mismo.) En quanto a "bitch". La mejor traducción sería "zorra" porque es basicamente igual. Tambien podrías decir "puta." Se usa mas que "zorra" pero es muchísimo mas fuerte.

La alternativa sería tener un moderador de habla hispana, pero en realidad sería ir un poco lejos. Y lamentablemente, muchas de las bromas son intraducibles, y sólo divierten con un dominio adecuado del inglés.

Personalmente no juego D&D, el cómic me lo presentó un amigo que sí juega mucho y he tenido que aprender bastante de las reglas para entender algunas partes xD

No, una "bitch" no es una prostituta. Una prostituta vende su cuerpo, un "bitch" es una chica o una mujer que se acuesta con cualquier persona solamente porque le gusta. En españa se dice "zorra". Eso me hace reir porque aqui en los EEUU llamar a una chica un "fox" no es un insulto, de hecho es un complimento.



But, yeah, as far as other languages go, I would gladly provide my services as a translator(-in-training) to make sure that things don't get out of line with the Spanish. :smallwink:

Damn, I'm a native spanish speaker and I've never tried tacos or burritos in my life (well... not mexican tacos, but I've tried guacamole... it's good).

Pero tienes toda la razón, hay bromas que son intraducibles (es esa una palabra?) como por ejemplo la del bote de Hinjo.

We're not asking nothing to Rich dude... we're using a little place in the forum to gather all the Spanish readers to... well.. chat and mix some "Spanish" points of view of the comic... nothing bad I think...

Agreed. The web translators aren't that good anyways and using one of them to translate a joke, story, sequence, irony, etc. is pointless because of the quality.

Even though the monologue is pretty much the same, we can identify some weird lines in there:

:nale: AUTORIZACIÓN, foco, Nale.(This is nonsense... really, it's something like "Authorization, focus (it can be mistaken for "light bulb" in spanish) Esto (actually is "Este" but it's really not that important) es él, el momento de la verdad. En un instante, Greenhilt tomará una mirada y notará todas las discrepancias... Pero usted (The way Nale talks to himself in the spanish translation is funny... it's like saying "Nale, thou have to be very caferul") ha estado practicando por semanas ahora... que usted tiene las palabras perfectas para convencerlo que usted sea Elan. Usted lo convencerá, vía willpower (an example that not all words can be translated) escarpado (this is... just wrong that word has nothing to do with the context!), de su identidad. Overall is not bad... but it's not good either and it can be misundertood.

Let's do something else here, let's translate back, Spanish translation to English.

Again, this isn't bad but you can see how the translator misses some parts.
And if the translator can miss some phrases (lost in translation hehe) in a perfectly good monologue, imagine how is it in the translation of a strip with tons of slang words, D&D keywords or english manners. That's not just bad in terms of quality, that's just plain absurd.

Sinceramente, no creo que haya problema aqui mientras podamos proveer una traducción para quienes no hablan Español.

Más en tema... OotS es un comic genial. Pero eso si, la barrera del idioma puede presentar algunos problemas. Hubo algunos chistes que no entendí ya que no conozco algunos términos de "slang" en inglés, ya que no es mi idioma natal. Ya después me explicaron esos términos, y le entendí a esos chistes. Me encantaría ver una traducción de los comics, pero desgraciadamente no sería lo mismo. :smalltongue:

More in topic... OotS is a great comic. But yeah, the language barrier can present a few problems. There were a few jokes I did not understand since I don't know some "slang" terms in English, since it's not my native language. Afterwards those terms were explained to me, and I understood those jokes. I'd love to see a translation of the comics, but sadly it wouldn't be the same. :smalltongue:
