View Full Version : The Brick Awards: The Best of the Worst Tournament #381-410

About 2 years ago, a great forumite named Porthos created an OOTS voting contest (based on a much shorter lived, but equally fantastic, previous version) which had forum goers vote on the best OOTS strips of all time. It was an impressive contest which has gone on for over 2 years (and only ended, or went on hiatus, due to running out of strips) and will undoubtedly be remembered in this forum as one of the most well-run ongoing threads on here.

This is not that contest. This is a shameless mockery of that contest.

Welcome to The Brick Awards, the Best of the Worst Tournament!

The Stick Awards were handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders. However, when voting for the Stick awards, some strips felt left out, abused, unloved. Whether they simply were a weak strip, or a decent strip surrounded by amazing strips, for whatever reason some strips just didn't get any votes. :smallfrown:

So this contest is designed to give those strips the morale boost they need and deserve! I am collecting all the strips which received zero votes in the Stick awards and presenting them in groups of ten (Or, at least close to ten, since I don't want to cut off in the middle of a group of strips). We will then vote as to which is our favorite of the worst strips so we can finally decide which the best worst strip is!

(And let's be honest, even the worst OOTS strips are still pretty good and deserve our appreciation!)

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten eleven listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting will last until Wednesday, January 20 at 10AM (MT). Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last week, we found out the main benefit of having the MitD around, when :xykon: :redcloak: #376 All Too Easy (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0376.html) was our winner!

#392 is an awesome sequence and needs more love.

Wow. I think this is the strongest set of Bricks yet. In a weaker batch, I can see myself voting for some of these in the regular Stick Awards.

I'm completely torn in choosing between #382 and #392, but I think I'll go with 382: Risk vs. Reward in the end, partly because it's arguably more important to Haley's development than nearly any other strip in OOTS, and partly because it seems more likely to be overlooked than #392.

#403 for hilarious Belkar's comment on his own hunger strike.

Some surprisingly important strips here. I'm going with 391 because I like how the crewperson in the bandana just kinda frowns at Elan's attempted flirtation.

Good batch.

...Wow. I don't think there's a single strip here I remotely dislike. I always considered the post-Cliffport arc as the moment that OOTS really came into bloom (nothing against the Cliffport arc, mind, but from Elan's prison scene on until the start of DStP was pretty much an unbroken chain of truly amazing strips), and seeing them all here again... I stand by that.

It will be a tragedy for the ages if ANY SINGLE ONE of these strips makes it to the Ultra Brick. I must implore my fellow Brick-layers to ensure that such a fate does not befall these poor strips, guilty only of being forced to run against their more popular brothers and sisters. They have suffered enough.

I'm tempted to abstain for the moment, if only to swoop in and rescue a strip later if it comes to that... but I suppose I can change my vote later if I must. #404 takes my vote for the moment, earned by the "OK, I won't tell you" wisecrack that I adopted into my personal wisecrack toolbox, and the whole "I have two tasks that I need completed" bit.

403.

I've used Belkar's comment in cell 5 in real life many times.

#404 for the same reasons Belkar stated in #405.

Here we go again, with another set of "I can't believe they didn't win their contest, let alone didn't get any vote whatsoeaver are you kidding me" strips.

I like 403, with Belkar's antics and the odd spiritual kinship between Roy and O-Chul.

I love 391, with a fantastic training scene montage.

392 is totally brilliant, with Thog's outer greenness, Captain Scoundrél's offspring, Elan using Bardic Force, The Captain wishing never to see Elan again, and the actual window crashing. Absolutely awesome.

But my pick has to be #390, as the Dashing Swordsman prestige class was a stroke of genius and one that had major, fantastic impact on the whole story. The mind really boggles seeing that it got no votes instead of 50. Make that 60.

392 Death From Above. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, as long as you look really cool doing it! (In retrospect, Julio's rival Tarquin had a rather similar perspective, now that I think about it.)

391-400 was a pretty insane batch looking at what strips we have here. I'll go with 391 - Eye of the Tiger, Baby.

wow... it's hard to believe that some of these didn't collect any vote.

That said, even if I'm tempted to say 391 or 405, I'll go for 392.

404 because of what :belkar: says in 205 and because O-Chul gets a line.

392: Death from above - for outer greenness too, and wonderful perspectives in the bottom left corner.

I found myself wondering why #384 seemed relegated to once again receiving no votes until I saw :elan:#392 Death From Above (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0392.html) . Against lesser competition, this strip seems like it could have won in the Stick Awards, instead it went up against some stiff competition and made it here, where it finally got its deserving moment of glory.

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!

#'s 384, 395, 396, and 402 all go on to the ultra brick awards! Ouch!
