Hi, I am new to D&D and making my second character because the first one didn't go so well. I am a Magic-blooded Aasimar Sorcerer (recommended by my Dm). And I need help selecting my spells.

Give those a read. Also, what sorts of things do you want your sorcerer to do, and what books are allowed?

My longest-running character, Quintessa of House Tzon, is a sorcerer:

So far I've been trying to focus on spells that could have a lot of utility in-and-out of battle (especially since my longest-running group wasn't much for planning, leaving me to effectively play a sorcerer like a wizard* :smalltongue:), and I've also been trying to avoid spells that require saving throws unless the spells have options that don't necessarily require them (disintegrate, grease) or otherwise have more than one use (limited wish, cone of cold [assuming she eventually obtains the archmage's "mastery of elements" and "mastery of shaping" high arcana]).

I won't (and can't) say my sorcerer is wholly optimized, especially since 99% of her spells are either core or core-based (mainly for simplicity) and some of her spells/feats/equipment are simply for flavor, but I'd suggest making sure you plan your spells well in advance, especially which ones you'll eventually retrain as time goes on (see if your DM will let you use the retraining rules in the Player's Handbook II to allow for extra spell-swapping). I keep a text file (https://www.schadenfreudestudios.com/dnd/3e%20spells%20-%20quintessa.txt) that lists which spells she knows (and will know) at each level.

I'd also like to think it'd be a good idea to put ranks in Use Magic Device to get more use out of your Charisma modifier for extra versatility (especially if you can pick up a circlet of persuasion or, even better, a scepter of obedience). Sure, you can count on the party cleric/druid to raise dead… but if he goes down, who'll raise him? :smalleek:

Hope you have fun with the class; it's my favorite.

*She's based on a character I created in the video game series, SoulCalibur (hence the images), and her voice/personality/appearance made me think of her as more Charismatic than Intelligent — not that she's an idiot, she's quite brilliant, she's just even more charismatic… but those attributes (and the ability to wield magic without spellbooks or preparation) clearly went to her head making her self-centered and giving her delusions of grandeur, though I do find it amusing that a low-Wisdom character can still have an "iron will" of sorts.

That guide really helped, I think my spell choice will be a lot easier now thank you.

Any time. Post it up and we can offer advice if you'd like.

What level are you?

By the way I would use combat spells, like those often found in guides, for high level spells. For low level spells I would use hour/level, swift and immediate action spells so that you don't burn combat actions on them. In dungeons you can also cast 10 min/level spells at the entrance. Otherwise you may not have time to cast many of your spells and they'll be wasted. Sorcerers may also use metamagic to take a low level spell known and use it as a high level spell per day, which is very handy for versatility since it effectively gives you more high level spells known. So you might put a combat spell in a lower level spell known but then metamagic it up.

My character is level 7 and I am slowly shaping him up to be a jack-of-all-trades sort of character.
