Okay, after reading up on this item I had to try incorporating it into my next character. He is an Aarakocra monk, so he gets all the goodies like flying up and then planting the rods instead of a long climb, but how could one best use them for combat? I know there is a prestige class for it in Master of Arms (which is currently en route to my house...), but what are some combat maneuvers the community can think of?
EDIT: What about Immovable Rod nunchaku?
Knock an enemy prone, then place and activate the immoveable rod on the center of his back where he can't reach it well. :nale:

I like it, how can a monk consistently render an enemy prone? (I'm used to using rogues or casters...)
EDIT: So Open Hand monks can knock them prone with Flurry of Blows, that definitely opens up options. If I have haste, I can attack, knock them prone, and place the immovable rod in one fluid move, which is a great starting point.
I think shove can be done with standard actions, but best to consult your DM.
(mind you having a specialized feat would let you do it better.)

I will keep that in mind. I have Athletics as a specialization, but my Strength is pretty awful (20 DEX and 20 WIS at lvl 5 for an Aarakocra, but had to sacrifice at only a 10 STR).

You should really check out 3e Immovable rod optimization threads via google.
My favorite was protecting the magic item from Acid and then having a summoned creature get swallowed... Before they poof out of existence they activate the rod...

It was actually browsing through those threads that inspired me to make this one! I loved the idea of having a character whose entire shtick was messing around with them, and I think between my potentially lenient DM and my abnormal ability scores, it could work to use feats to make him an IR specialist!
