The boat you hired drops anchor just outside a sandy cove on the south side of Crab Island. The sailors wish you luck and lower a rowboat for you to row onto land. They agree to meet you back here in two days. You eventually reach shore and beach the small boat on the white sand. A tall hill at the centre of the island looms above you, it is the only spot on the island with any trees. What looks like a wooden shack of some sort resides on a small cliff overlooking the bay. A small, twisting dirt path winds up the hill toward the shack. On the other side of the bay, a rough pathway has been worn away into the side of the mountain by years of use. Perhaps the island has more inhabitants than is commonly believed. The beach also surrounds the entire island and could, perhaps, be followed. As you climb out of the boat and look around, a strong wind picks up. The gasping of the wind sounds almost like cries for help. A seagull mournfully hops across the sand.

Beleg (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=685926) looks around, making sure the mournful noise he hears is the wind rather than cries for help. He is an unremarkable elf with even less remarkable equipment. His full name is remarkable, but not pronounceable.

"Shall we pay our respects to the locals?" He nods toward the distant shack.

Resere (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=677915) uncomfortably adjusts his armour after stepping off the boat, he flinches from the wind and it's sounds. He orientates himself and, noticing the small shack on the cliff, responds to Beleg.

"I see no reason why not. Let's hope their years on an isolated island haven't affected their hospitality too much."

Looking off to the worn pathway he adds: "It may not be as isolated as people say though."

"And if it does turn out to be deserted, that shack could very well make a good base of operations for the time we're here. We should also think about getting a look at the island from a better vantage point." Eohin (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=680949)gestures toward the path up the mountain.

Your small group makes it's way up the dirt path toward the shack. It is steeper than you had anticipated and by the time you reach the top, those with a weaker fortitude are puffing and out of breath.

Once you reach the top a flat, rocky plain is revealed to you. The only significant rise on the island is the hill near the centre and the cliff that surrounds most of the island. The path you were following continues east toward the hill once it passes the shack.

Turning your eyes to the shack, you notice it is in worse condition than you realized. The wood is rotten and cracking and the roof seems ready to collapse at any moment. Half of the door is missing and the remnants hang open by a single hinge.

"Doesn't look like we'll get any news or much of a base. Still, I don't plan on leaving any stone unturned if there might be a copper under it." Beleg peers in through the broken door, looking up as well as down and around. He unslings his 10' pole, intending to probe the floor, and the ceiling, if it looks dangerous to stand under.

The interior of the shack is in even worse condition.

A wooden stool sits on its side in the middle of the room, what looks like half a small bed rests in the corner, and there is a stone fireplace filled with wet goop of some sort. The smell of rotten food lingers in the air.

The book appears to be the diary of one Aminita Hauls, a monastic hermit of some sort. He seems that he dwelt on this island for more than a decade before leaving. The last entry, dated 9 years ago, speaks of an attack on the island by giant crabs forcing Aminita to flee.

You all follow the dirt path. It starts to gently gets steeper and steeper, until you are forced to climb up the hill using your hands. Eventually you reach the top of the hill. A small grove of gnarled, stubby trees dominates the top of the hill. A small stone platform with a wooden trapdoor has been built in the centre of the grove. Another, less steep, pathway leads down the opposite side of the hill.

Yin and Eohin survey the island. The other path down the mountain looks like it splits off into two lines that twist between the rocks. One leads back to the cove where you started and the other goes east toward the coast and eventually reaches some sort of town, they can clearly see a sailing ship moored there. The path that split off from the one you followed leads into a small gulch and they cannot see what is within. The remainder of the island seems rocky and barren with nothing of particular interest, except, perhaps, Yin swears he is able to see several creatures moving around on the other path, although it is very difficult to tell from this distance.

The trapdoor seems completely unlocked and un-trapped. It could easily be opened.

Turning to his new ally, Yin says "Show me your face and tell me your name, my friend."

"Tell me, what is it you were doing here?"

Before she can react, Lantyer's companions have taken care of the attackers.

"Thank you for the help... Beleg, was it? Allow me to look at that statue as well, I am knowledgeable in several languages, not just of men but of draconic creatures and the residents of the planes."

While the others examine the statue, Belflinn sits down to tend to his wounds. "Do any of ye have some healing for a poor wounded warrior?" he asks.

The man removes his mask. You aren't quite sure what you were expecting, but it certainly wasn't that of a handsome young man with wavy blonde hair. His eyes are glassy and unfocused, likely because of the charm spell. "My name is Lukin. I live here on Crab Island with my family. We are the guardians and servants of The Crab King. My cousin has likely gone to warn the others of your presence. I doubt he will return, for the moment."

Lantyer is able to decipher the words on the statue. It appears to be an ancient dialect of Infernal, the tongue of demons. She is not able to make it all out, but it speaks of an ancient entity that lies under Crab Island and protects the world from harm.

"We had best move on. He might not come back right away, but the others might."

On hearing Lantyer's translation, he says, "Had it been in Fey I would be more inclined to believe it, though their meaning can be subtle. Given the tongue it's written in, I doubt the benevolence of such a protector, should there be one."

Belflinn stands and carefully checks the area behind the curtain.

Belflinn snoops around behind the curtain. He finds a small chamber with a small wood table and four stools. A silver candlestick rests on the table along with a deck of playing cards.

He puts the candlestick in his backpack.

You open the west door revealing a dark hallway covered with beautiful, panoramic paintings of various landscapes. The hall continues forward for maybe 30 feet before reaching yet another locked wooden door.

Beleg (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=685926) listens at the door. No-one came forward the last time he asked for a door-opener, so if he doesn't hear anything, he'll examine the lock for traps, then try to open it.

Belflinn remains silent, for a dwarf, while Beleg listens at the door.

A thought occurs to Belflinn. "Maybe we should ask Yin's companion what is on the other side of this door and if he has a key"

Giving a slight nod to the dwarf, Yin questions the young man. "Lukin, Tell me about this place. Can you sketch a rough map? Are there any traps or locked areas? Do you have any keys?"

YossarianLives

Lukin thinks for a moment. "Only the highest ranking members of our family are allowed to possess keys to the doors, but beyond this door is a hub of sorts with staircases that lead to the major areas of our complex. We don't have any traps beside The Guardian, who is guaranteed not to harm any of us."

Beleg cannot hear anything on the other side of the door and he cannot pick the lock.

Lukin looks rather confused. "None of us have seen The Guardian, but we know it would never harm us!"

Almost immediately after this, another shriek, similar to the first comes from the room you just left.

In OD&D d20s are pretty much only used for attack rolls. Opening doors is dealt with on a roll of 1d6. For most characters, 5-6 indicates success.
Belflinn hacks mercilessly at the door with his axe and turns it to splinters. He bursts through the ruined door and finds himself in a large hexagonal chamber lit by several metal braziers placed near the wall. A spiral staircase in the middle of the room leads downward and there is an archway leading to another staircase on each side of the room, other than the one you just entered from. (hereafter referred to as staircase 1, 2, 3 and 4) The ceiling is about 7 metres from the floor and a balcony about 4 metres up hugs the wall.

A monstrous crab the size of a horse devours the corpse of a bony calf in the centre of the room. As Belflinn enters, it drops the calf and begins advancing toward you at the promise of more juicy prey. Behind the crab you can the man who fled earlier dashing down the spiral staircase.

The party won initiative. What will you do?

"Lukin, is that the Guardian?" Yin asks as he steps to the side of the doorway. "Do you know a way to calm it down so it won't attack us?"

I'm thinking the crab may be too big to move through the doorway. Yin will back up a step and move a bit to the side, hopefully to a place where the crab would not be able to attack from the other side of the open door, draw my sword, and try to take a defensive stance. Keep an eye on the hallway behind us as well.

Algondae misses completely and the crab attacks back with a mighty swing of it's claw, luckily it's claw gets caught on the door frame and Algondae is saved from a grisly fate.

The other staircases go southeast, southwest, northwest and northeast, respectively. (Sorry, I should have specified.)
