Just looking for a couple of helpful hints. As a precursor to everything: the character is a redeemed Vrock (demon), with determination to be as similar to the celestial who taught him as possible. He's also a bit odd as far as demons go...aside from the whole being redeemed thing.

Core beliefs regarding combat so far:
1) Never strike first.
2) Never strike a fleeing target - includes discouraging others from attacking them.
3) Offer a chance for the enemy to stop, both before the conflict starts and when they are weakened.
4) Never fight with hatred in your heart.
5) If combat is forced, finish it quickly.
6) Those who cannot defend themselves must be defended.

Background:

Like every other bud of the Abyss, Jake was but another nameless , forgettable demon that only caused suffering and pain. For time unknown, this was his only purpose. It was the only thing he could even do. Unlike the others, however, he took no joy out of the pain he caused. It only echoed a cold agony within his chest. Even when forced by the Abyss's will, he was slow to start, but quick to finish - causing as little pain as was possible by his cursed form. His victims were always in pain. No matter where they ran, he could find them. Even when he took his own eyes, he could see them. Their pain just rang more deeply in him than ever. The torments his peers cast upon him were nothing compared to his own suffering.

It was one fateful day. The flock was sent to destroy a village. He was a part of this "flock". He lagged behind the rest, as normal, but from the distance he... "felt" more than "saw" a beacon of light. In his mind sang a single word: "protect". His mind toiled over the meaning, but his body already knew before even hearing the word. With a vigor unknown to him, he picked up speed, flying with an ease he's never felt. The others of the flock were already upon this glowing figure. The mere presence of this beacon of light was causing his skin to break in to a rash, but he cared not.

Jake turned on the flock there and then. The Abyss's will had been severed from him. For hours on end, the two would fight against the oncoming demon flock, up until the most beautiful sunset he had ever seen. Many of the villagers died, Jake's wings were ripped off, and was left with deep, unhealing scars around his body. It didn't matter, for in the end, they were victorious, and several were still alive. It was unlike anything he had ever felt before. Was it Rage? Greed? Pride? No...happiness. Joy. He had "protected" others.

The... the villagers, however, still didn't want to let him rejoice, as he was still a demon like those that had slaughtered their families and friends. They closed in. The beacon of light, seeing this, took Jake's hand and flew away with him. The days they spent together were like an eternal state of bliss. He learned so much from this short time. He was given a code to live by. He was given an experience he could never forget.

But all things must come to an end. One night, a mob of people had managed to sneak up on them as they slept. Before he could awake, they were on him. In terror, he swiped with the claws of his demonic past to free himself. He heard the voice of the beacon: "Just run! It's too late. Run and remember what I've taught you. Don't seek vengeance." Jake felt yet more brand new emotions as he uttered his last words to the beacon, "But, I didn't even learn anything about you. Why is this happening?" He received no response, but was instead filled with a spark of light that caused him to run, and the demon knew that he got his new name, Jake. It was his first and only name, and he cherished it as much as the memory of the moment that they were together.

Expansion: He has had a good bit of experience with humanoids that didn't involve them wanting to kill him...at least after he hides his identity as a demon, and though he never forgets, he holds no hatred for them.
