View Full Version : Crafts Kid Jake Presents: Clay Sculptures

Not sure if anybody has any interest in this, but a week or so ago I picked up sculpting as a hobby and I thought I might share the results to get some feedback or maybe even requests. I'll admit that I absolutely don't know what I'm doing, but I'm figuring it out as I go and it's a fun way to pass the time.

Outside of a half-assed attempt at a Golem 3-4 years ago that didn't really impress me, this is pretty much the first thing I ever actually made right around 2 weeks ago. I was playing with my niece's Play Doh and made a grizzled goblin head that I proceeded to torment her with.

Afterwards I felt kind of annoyed that I'd spent so much time on something that I could really only enjoy for a few minutes, so I picked up a block of clay and recreated it; then at the request if a friend put him in a suit because suits are awesome. The camera I'm using is extremely crappy and failed to pick up the splotchy color of his skin (which I was actually kind of proud of) and the bright pink shirt he's wearing.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0014_zps5lnresxp.jpg

The Goblin ended up taking 1 and a 1/2 blocks of clay to finish, so I had some extra leftover. An image of a snarling wolf leaped to mind and I had this finished in just a few hours. I actually made and inserted the teeth individually to make sure they were pointy and intimidating enough for my purposes.

This was also an important lesson in mixing paints, as it was SUPPOSED to be two different shades of grey; one dark and one much, much lighter...but when it dried they both looked identical.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0022_zpsykcawc1t.jpg
Took a surprisingly long time to put together. He's only about three inches tall, so most of his detail pieces were so small and thin that the heat from my hands would basically liquefy them before I could get them into place.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0050_zpsjhczfkhd.jpg

Another tiny piece that took forever to put together. I never realized how weird Vader's helmet is until I tried to duplicate it, it took me HOURS to mold his face right and the camera failed to pick up literally anything that I did to it anyway. I'm not super happy with how he turned out so I'll probably try again, most likely with an 8-12 inch figure the next time.

Of course he turned out better than my attempt at Superman because at least you can see Vader on camera, the flash turns Supes into an amorphous blue blob. :smalltongue:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0010_zpsntvxcxsj.jpg
No idea where this came from, I just thought a pair of red eyes glaring from inside a trashcan would be neat and even though it probably took me 10 minutes from start to finish it's one of my favorite pieces. Although if I redid it I'd probably try to keep the lines a little straighter.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0061_zps5t42qwho.jpg
My niece adores Michael Jackson and the Walking Dead, so I knew I'd have to put together a zombie sooner or later or she'd pester me forever. The camera didn't pick up much of its shredded face; but hopefully it's dance moves come through loud and clear.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0073_zpsqtulgc2m.jpg
Obviously based its pose on the Patterson video, also originally tried to make the stand look like a large plaster foot print. I was really happy with how it looked, but the foot collapsed during the baking process so I threw up my hands and just said screw it.

This was actually one of the more difficult sculptures I've done, since the body was fairly thick and the pose put a lot of pressure on the ankles; they snapped several times and if they look a little bulky its because I just kept rebuilding on the remains until something stuck. I was irritated with all the problems and overall unhappy with the way this one turned out, but over the past week it's kinda grown on me.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0078_zpswd4ht5mn.jpg
My favorite so far, though looking at the picture it looks like I need to go over it with some more paint. I don't notice the white spots with it sitting on my shelf, but the flash reveals quite a few of 'em and that bugs me.

The whole thing is based on an unsettling anecdote from my childhood, or rather my sister's which I always thought was cool.

My sister was about six years old when our great grandmother died, and the night she passed we were staying with our grandmother who lived directly across the street from her. We knew our great grandmother was sick, but didn't really think anything of it because it was just that time of year. My sister however sat staring out the window all night long and telling us about a tall man dressed like a cowboy in all black that kept checking a pocket watch every few seconds and pacing across our great grandmother's porch.

That's sort of disturbing, so we all glanced out with her; but didn't see anything and chalked it up to youthful imagination. She refused to leave the window however and kept insisting that the man was waiting for something. She sat there for more than an hour while the rest of us watched T.V. and then suddenly just said "He got what he came for, he's leaving now."

That was kind of creepy in itself; but no sooner were the words out of her mouth than we got a call from our aunt, who was living with our great grandmother at the time, crying and saying that she couldn't find a pulse. We'd all been extremely close to our great grandmother, so we were naturally heart broken...except for my sister; who turned white as a ghost and couldn't stop shaking with fear when it dawned on her what the 'man' had been waiting for.

To this day, she associates a black cowboy hat with Death; and as somebody who loves the Western genre anyway that strikes me as incredibly badass.

So, lemme know what'cha think and if you'd like to see something specific I'll try and get around to it when I've got the clay on hand.

So this is neat. How long does it take you to make them? How long to learn how?

Kid Jake
2016-01-24, 06:51 PM
Thankya. Some of them I can put together in a couple of hours. Though if I was a little more confident in not messing up and didn't spend 10-15 minutes baking the clay every time I hit a point I liked the way it looked it could probably be done considerably faster. Others might take 2-3 evenings to get them where I want them.

Death for example I worked on for about four days off and on. The first day I made a wire skeleton and attached the head, hands and feet. The second day I arranged the body until it was posed just the way I wanted it. The third I put on the clothes/hat/watch, and the fourth I spent painting it and hoping I wouldn't break anything.

As for how long it takes to learn...well, a week or so ago I bought a pound of clay and rolled it around in my hands until it looked like a goblin to me. :smalltongue:

My uncle's been sculpting for as long as I've known him and every time I've ever tried to ask him how to do what he does he's just responded with "Poke at it until it looks right. If you mess it up, start over and do it again." I always thought that was infuriatingly vague, but that pretty well explains the learning process so far: I turn on Netflix or some kind of music and then fiddle with a piece of clay for an hour or two until it looks like what I think it should look like, bake it and then do it again after it cools.

Everything I make usually teaches me a little something new, usually something that I should've known beforehand: Like to always make sure the clay's anchored or it'll just break off or to have an exit plan for that ball of aluminum I used to give the cape a billowing effect or I'll just have to snap it off and make another anyway.

Step one of....I'm gonna just say many, of my new project: Khorne.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/2013-01-25%2019.14.02_zpszvxfflbr.jpg

I've spent the evening making individual skulls for the Skull-Throne and I estimate I might be 1/3rd of the way through the number of skulls I'll need for what I'm going for. I've omitted the lower jaw both because it's easier that way and because I think they'll stack better when I'm done. When it's finished this'll probably wind up weighing in at somewhere around 6lbs of clay and wire, and stand at 18 inches or so. I also have a sneaking suspicion that I won't want to make skulls again for a good long while.

Having seen these, I've been inspired to make some of my own - an insultingly bad sister of battle if any sisters of battle were around to be insulted, a cloaked woman who kinda collapsed under her own weight, a Maltese Cross which looks kinda all right, a sword that's not very well made, and a box whose lid doesn't fit. I'm getting better at it, though. So thanks for being generally inspiring.

Kid Jake

Always glad to inspire. Feel free to post 'em if you like, I enjoy seeing what people are up to.

A little advice for the one that collapsed under its own weight: Work in stages. Make an outline out of an old wire coat hanger, build her basic shape over it out of clay and then bake it. After it cools down just apply the rest of the clay, then you'll be able to add all the detail you want without it falling apart on you.

If you're like me, then everytime you make something you'll have an "Oooooh, THAT'S how I'm supposed to do that." moment that you'll wish you could go back and redo the rest of your stuff knowing.

This wizard is the first model I've made that I'm happy with, and his iron-bound book is the second. I'm not so sure on the stone altar with its hand-painted golden sigils (I promise I'm just trying to describe what they are, not show off), which was supposed to be a box, until I realised that the lid didn't fit after baking.

Then again, the enigmatic creature known only as the Purple Mage with Black Hat - one of the pieces for my game Mage Wars, his hat and robes indicating that he's an evil mage specialising in debuffs - was not originally meant to be a golem! The clay I'm using is very variable; his base shrank massively while his arms blew up like balloons.

Taking your advice even before you gave it, I made the hat, head, arm, arm, body, and legs/base as six separate parts, before combining them afterwards. The book and the altar were each made as single-pieces (and as you can see in the picture, aren't connected).

Citadel paints are pretty good for this, which isn't surprising because model-painting is what they're designed for.

The webcam quality isn't great. You can't see PMwBH's glowing green eyes, or the green detail on his arms (you can see a greenish tinge on them, but where the actual detail is).

What sort of clay are you using? My uncle's sworn by Sculpey for something like 20 years now so that's what I beelined for when I decided I wanted to give it a try. It's a little more expensive than some of the other brands, but doesn't seem too finicky.

I've ran out of clay so Khorne is going to have to wait until I can get to the store, but here's what I've got so far:

The Skull Throne so far:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/2013-01-27%2016.35.34_zpskbtd9gav.jpg

The skulls I still have left to add to the throne.

I must admit that, due to being poor, I'm using homemade clay which still somehow manages to provide decent quality and I assume that most explosions are due to accidental air gaps.

Loving the ToS so far. I must admit that I kinda want one. :smalltongue:

Speaking of wanting one, my mother has requested that I make her an owl of some description. I'll see what I can do...

Heh, I know what'cha mean. I've been unemployed for...well, a while now, and this recent interest in sculpting is quickly draining my emergency funds. I'm hoping I'll be able to make a few bucks off of some of my figures either online or at our local crafts festival to at least pay for making more of them.

Glad it's looking good, it was insane making it stay together. I'm basically using paper thin splotches of clay as a grout to hold them in place and trusting in its own accumulating weight to keep them from jiggling around. Every time I thought I had it down pat half the skulls would fall off and I'd have to start again. I'm getting a little excited at what this is going to look like when it's done though; it's the kind of thing I've always thought would look cool on my shelf but was too cheap to pay retail for.

Lemme know how the owl turns out, I've got one on my giant list of 'stuff to make' too.

Next up on Jormengand Steals KJ's Spotlight, it's the Red Mage With White Hat!* This mage is good-aligned, which justifies roasting his enemies alive with lightning!

http://oi67.tinypic.com/w2bpsp.jpghttp://oi66.tinypic.com/2088qx0.jpg

That lightning bolt was actually surprisingly easy to make. In fact, the main challenge was getting the quadrilateral through arm-arm-body-lightning to join up, as they were four different pieces (The hands and lightning are one part).

*The owl is still in my mother's possession. It went well.

Heh, I changed the title of the thread to make it a little less Kid Jake-centric. :smalltongue:

I'm still out of clay (as is my local Walmart) so I haven't managed to update the Skull-Throne; though I did just remember that I never uploaded Superman.

I'm not super happy with the way he turned out, I can think of about four things I'd have done different in retrospect, but he's still on my shelf so he's worth mentioning.

Edit: The images sized kind of weird, but you can click on them for a larger view.

Alright, so Khorne has been put on the backburner because I sort of smashed the skull throne into a billion little pieces while trying to fix what I at the time believed to be a loose skull, but what was in reality a cleverly laid trap. I've managed to put it back together, even a little larger than before, but the whole thing made me realize that I'm going to need a crapload of extra clay for all the accidents I'm liable to have and since as far as I can tell there's only a single block of my chosen brand in my entire zip code I decided to turn my attention to easier projects until I can stock up.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/2013-02-02%2018.50.59_zpsctqdr4lp.jpg

I'm not super happy with the way this one turned out, but I figured I'd post him anyway for the hell of it. If I'd had more clay I'd have definitely made him bulkier all around, and his eyes seem to have lost their expression when I painted him and just look uneven now.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I was almost tempted to make Chairface Chippendale instead, but figured I'd have to explain who he is to friends/family more than the Tick himself.

Keep it up kid!

Thankya, I surely will as soon as I can get some more clay.

Welp, I've completely shattered the skull throne three more times since my last post, and rebuilt it bigger and stronger than before each time, and damned near cut my finger off assembling the base out of an old pie pan; but it's almost done. Once I've got Khorne where I'm happy with him I'll post the finished product.

Tip: If anyone ever gets the urge to do something like this....don't. The individual skulls were a terrible idea, no matter how cool they look. If I had it to do again I'd save myself a few days and tubs of glue and just carved a solid block of clay to look like individual skulls stacked high. As daunting as it sounds, I can now confirm it's the easier way of going about this.

Kid Jake
2016-02-14, 11:31 PM
Still not quite done, but it's about 90% there. I'm going to wait a day or two to paint him since it took several weeks just to make and place all those damned skulls and I want to make sure I'm satisfied with him before I start mixing colors.

Since moving a month or two back I haven't had much opportunity to actually sit down and make anything, nor do I really have anywhere to put it if I did, but a friend's son is having a birthday next weekend and I thought I'd throw together something neat with the clay I've already stockpiled. I'm not much of a Mickey Mouse fan myself, so it came as a bit of a shock when I discovered that the Disney icon doesn't actually have a neck.

I had to decapitate my original attempt and hollow out his chest/shoulder region to set the head on directly; but I'm fairly happy with the end result. I stuck him in the classic "I'm not doing anything" pose, because if the kid turns out to be anything like his dad and I was growing up it's going to be a look he models often; usually while something's on fire.

I've still not been able to finish up Khorne because without a solid place to display him I don't want to risk even moving him into the house; with a 2 and 4 year old running around and touching everything I don't envision the Blood God lasting long.

I'll probably be making more stuff in the next week or so though; because now that I've finished Mickey the itch has came back in full force. If anybody'd like to see me make something in particular just lemme know. I'm thinking about snapping pictures of my next project every step of the way.

2016-05-02, 02:31 PM
Ah, good to see you at it again. I've not had the chance to do my art either (revising for exams...) but glad to look at yours. One critique I have is that the eyeballs make him look as though he's rolling his eyes, or that he's high on something, or both. This may just be bad camera angle, of course.

Kid Jake
2016-05-03, 12:39 AM
I think/hope it's a bad angle, I'm a crappy photographer on a good day. I'll ask around though and see if anyone else gets that sense from him in person. Luckily, if it turns out it is a problem, the eyes would be pretty much no trouble at all to fix.

I'm currently working on an X-Wing just to try something non-organic for a change; though I'm not sure if I'll be finished with it anytime soon. I've smashed it flat and started over about a dozen times already.

Kid Jake
2016-05-04, 07:36 PM
Alright, so I'm done with the X-Wing now. I didn't finish it mind you, I'm just done with it.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/2013-05-05%2019.12.00_zpsbsnbgoiz.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/2013-05-05%2019.13.02_zpsdenfb604.jpg

As you can see in the second picture, I sort of caused a fracture that split the whole damned thing in two. My intention was to create a stand with a thin piece of wood to hold it up like it was flying, but when I inserted the skewer into the sculpture the weight of it tore itself apart; I fought it the best I could but I don't believe the damage is going to be repairable.

I still had some detail work (on the cockpit, guns, R2 unit, etc...) that I most likely won't be getting to now; but if something happens and I find a way to make the idea work I might finish it up later on.

I didn't bother with the step by step on this one because I wasn't really sure any of it was going to work in the first place. Overall though, even though it didn't turn out like I wanted it to it still gives me hope for future projects in the 'non-humanoid' vein.

Kid Jake
2016-05-07, 04:18 AM
I had a bit of clay left over from the X-Wing that I didn't want to go to waste, so I split it into three pieces and made the original starter Pokemon for S&G.

The only one that really took more than a couple of minutes was Charmander, and that was because his tail snapped off during the cooking process and I had to rig it up a little bulkier to keep it in place. I'm fairly happy with how they turned out, but I think I might take another swing at them at a later date anyway.

This particular project made me realize that sometimes a figure can be too simple. With the X-Wing I left out a LOT of detail but it's still pretty immediately recognizable as an X-Wing. With something like Squirtle though, his entire face consists of about two lines and if you don't make both of those lines perfect it's almost unrecognizable.

Without the paint Squirtle just sort of looked like a tootsie roll with legs and at certain angles I still see it.

I also thought of a way to salvage the X-Wing project, maybe even making it more awesome than I originally intended, and should be returning to it as soon as I've got the supplies.

Before I'd even began the Pokemon project I'd given my sister (who ended up stealing Charmander) a chunk of clay to mess around with. After a few days of trying to make the masks of Comedy and Tragedy she eventually just gave up and asked me to make them for her. The whole thing probably took me 10 minutes from beginning to end (not counting baking times), but I'm fairly happy with how they turned out.

They did have a red ribbon wrapped around them, but when I set them up to snap a picture they fell over and shattered the ridiculously thin ribbon into little shards; so I just tore the rest of it off and repainted them.

Kid Jake

I've finished up a couple of minor projects earlier today. First off we have:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0139_zpsmjy11rtw.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0140_zpswb2btdpe.jpg

I had just about a pinch of clay left after I was done with the other little piddling stuff, so my niece begged me to make her a Pikachu. I rolled the entire thing out in just a couple of minutes, but I've spent twice as long just gluing the tail back on as I did making it to begin with. She's no longer allowed to show it to people herself as I'm running out of glue.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y207/UnLegend/DSCN0155_zpswl9wpgwm.jpg

Since the X-Wing was having trouble holding itself together after the mishap with the stand, I decided to just commit to the look. I hacked off the bottom wing, the nose of the craft and a portion of its underside and stuck it into a pot to recreate the crash on Dagoba. If anything ever blooms I'll make sure to get a picture of it too.

I'm in the middle of a larger project I'll start posting on soon.

Y'know, as promising as your clay-making is... your ability to photograph things without them being blurry is terrible.

(Like, seriously. The background is sharp, but the thing you're pointing it at isn't? What do you even use to make those pictures with, and does it have manual targeting?)

Kid Jake
2016-05-13, 02:57 AM
It's a crappy old Nikon that my sister got cheap off a guy, who got it cheap off a guy, and I got for the gas it cost me to go pick it up before she threw it away. I believe it's a lack of light in here; delaying the shutter speed that causes the figures to be out of focus, and it seems like when I use the flash they're sharper, but the flash brings a whole other kind of irritation.

I've got a buddy with a new, fairly spiffy Go Pro that I've been trying to get come over and snap pictures for me; but so far he always forgets to actually bring the camera with him.

Domochevsky

I presume then that none of you have a smartphone with inbuild camera? :smallamused:
(They're surprisingly not terrible by this point.)

Kid Jake
2016-05-13, 02:17 PM
I don't, I only recently started carrying a phone again at all and it's just a cheap flip phone for emergencies. I'd assume somebody I know owns a better phone, but I've never thought to ask.

Kid Jake
2016-05-13, 04:01 PM
I'd mentioned that I was going to post every step involved in one of my projects a little while back and since nobody told me that was a stupid idea I figured I'd follow through with my threat. It could probably be more in depth, but every time I bake the clay I snap a photo to give a sense of how I'm getting to the final product.

It's still a ways from done, but I thought it might be of interest anyway. See if anybody can tell what it's going to be yet.

Starts out promising, I'd say.
Not including a wire for the head is a risky move, though. Heads are heavy and necks are thin.

On the other hand, if this fails you can always strap bombs to each hand and let it run at the player, screaming.

I'm stingy with my wire. :smalltongue:

I worked the clay around the neck area until it was fairly well supported and then cradled the head with a chunk of tin foil until it was hardened. Seems to be holding together alright at the moment, but a dab of superglue and another trip to the oven'll fix it up if I've miscalculated.

I'd considered also photographing the paint mixtures that led to the colors I used, but after about 4 pictures realized it would probably only be interesting to me and stopped.

Lacks the codpiece, but apart from that a proper "Freeze!" pose, that.

(I presume the head didn't break off as feared?)

it did, but that was because a 4 year old dropped it. Luckily I managed to patch it up, in fact the photo was taken after the fact.

I've been without internet recently because of a move, but put this together during my absence.

My original vision had his feet propped up on a table and him sitting in an old chair, but they didn't do well during the baking process so I made do.

I also put together a Jessica Rabbit, but I'm not really happy with the end result on that one.

Here's my first piece of commissioned work. A fella saw some of my stuff and wanted to know if I'd make him something for a reasonable fee. Naturally I obliged. I'm fairly happy with the way it turned out, although I'm not a fan of the way my new phone seems to only have a 'too dark' or 'too bright' setting with nothing in between. I spent a ridiculous amount of time mixing a golden color for the eyes and they don't seem to be visible at all.

I took almost a dozen pictures of this and sadly this was the clearest one. I have no idea why I couldn't hold my hands still, but I might try to reupload this at a later time.

A'ight, that ain't terrible.

(How'd you do the water, though? Just a sheet of blue clay, waved?)

I cut the bottom out of one of my disposable pie pans and then covered it in a thin layer of clay; then added in and textured clumps to represent waves.

Not sure how many people still remember my M&M journal, but here's an unfinished McCrow. Waiting to paint it until I have a few figures ready to go.

Not sure who that is, but at the very least I can appreciate the quality of your camera this time around.
