The uses are are limited to what are presented in the book.

The applications are limited only by your imagination and the situation you are presented with. A few clerics with this spell set up on a beach head could funnel an entire armada to a watery grave. A circle of druids could create a moat around a sacred grove as a quick defensive fortification. I could go on but I think you get the point.
