View Full Version : Pathfinder The Holy Gun Archetype - A Fix (PEACH)

Hello everyone. I've been wanting to use the Holy Gun archetype for a character, but ... well, it sucks. So I decided to take a stab at rewriting it. I would like everyone's thoughts and opinions on it, if possible.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

Holy guns are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, firearms, and medium and light armor.

Divine Deed

At 1st level, the holy gun gains the Amateur Gunslinger feat, with the following caveats: the holy gun must choose the Smiting Shot deed as her gunslinger deed, and her grit points key off of charisma instead of wisdom. This deed works and interacts with grit the same way as Gunslinger deeds, but only the holy gun can use it. If the holy gun also has levels in Gunslinger, she can spend grit points from that class to use this deed. This ability replaces smite evil.

Smiting Shot (Su)

A holy gun can spend 1 grit point as a swift action to designate one foe within sight to smite. If the target is evil, the holy gun adds her Charisma bonus plus her paladin level to the damage of the firearm attack until the end of her turn. If the target of the smiting shot is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage increases to the Charisma modifier plus 2 points of damage per level the paladin possess. Regardless of the target, smiting shot automatically bypasses any DR the creature might have. This deedís cost cannot be reduced by the true grit class ability, the Signature Deed feat, or any other effect that reduces the amount of grit a deed costs.

Have Gun, Will Travel

At 1st level, the holy gun gains Gunsmithing as a bonus feat. She also gains a battered gun identical to the one gained by the Gunslinger.

Gun Training (Ex)

Starting at 4th level, a holy gun can select one specific type of firearm (such as an axe musket, blunderbuss, musket, or pistol). She gains a bonus equal to her Dexterity modifier on damage rolls when firing that type of firearm. Furthermore, when she misfires with that type of firearm, the misfire value of that firearm increases by 2 instead of 4. Every five levels thereafter (9th, 14th, and 19th), the gunslinger picks up another type of firearm, gaining these bonuses for those types as well.

This ability replaces the standard paladinís channel positive energy ability.

Holy Grit (Ex)

At 4th level, a holy gun gains a number of grit points equal to her Charisma modifier (minimum 1) and gains the use of any two Gunslinger deeds. She can select any deed that a Gunslinger of her paladin level could use. The holy gun continues to gain additional deeds as shown on table 1.2. If she already has levels in Gunslinger, she gains a bonus to the maximum amount of grit she can have each day equal to her Charisma bonus (if any), but gains no extra grit as the start of each day.

At the DM's option, the holy gun may gain deeds from other sources as well, such as deeds from other classes and feats.

This class feature replaces the paladinís spells class feature. A holy gun does not gain any spells or spellcasting abilities, does not have a caster level, and cannot use spell trigger or spell completion magic items.

Divine Bond

At 5th level, a holy gun forms a bond with her deity. If her divine bond feature takes the form of a firearm, in addition to the listed abilities, she can add the distance, reliable, or seeking special abilities to her weapon, but she cannot add the defending or disruption special abilities.

This ability otherwise functions as the standard paladinís divine bond.

Holy Slinger (Ex)

This ability functions like the holy champion paladin class feature, but the banishment occurs when she hits an evil outsider with the smiting shot deed.

Kicking in with the gunslinger deeds earlier seems essential. Our houserules allowed it in exchange for all spells, so you are more generous.
