View Full Version : What feats to take for an Incanatrix/IotSFV?

I'm having trouble when exactly I should take the prereq feats. The build I'm thinking is a Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/IotSFV 7/Incantatrix 4. I also want to be able to stick improved init in there, as well as metamagic obviously.

Do you want to go the Persistent Spell route with incantatrix? If so, metamagic-wise, you'll want Extend, Persistent, Quicken, Chain, and probably Split Ray and Empower for offense. First, you need the IotSV prereqs--you can start with SF: Abjuration, take Iron Will at 3rd, Greater SF: Abj at Wizard 5th, the Skill Focus at 6th. Then you start in on the metamagic, using IotSV bonus feats (Extend/Persistent first, most likely). You'll get your metamagic late, and you'll need to skip Imp. Init, I guess. Pick up a Flaw (i.e. Noncombatant) if you can.

If you can, specialize in Abjuration, and go into Master Specialist(Complete Mage). It requires Spell Focus(specialist school), but over 2-3 levels you get Greater spell focus and Skill focus spellcraft, both prereqes for IotSFV. That should free up some feat slots( though it might delay Incantrix, not sure about the Prereqs for that one).

That's true, much as it hurts to lose a third school with Incantatrix. Wiz 3/Master Abjurer 2 would be a good decision.

You wouldn't actually lose that much going Wiz 5/MA 3/Incantatrix 5/IotSV 7, just delay IotSV by a few levels.

What school besides Enchantment and Evoc could I drop if I went that route?

IOTSOV/Incantatrix?!

That's just cruel. Play a PS and be done with it!

Don't want to drop illus, abj, conj, or trans... but necromancy is nice...

So evil!

I'd just play a generalist and drop evocation, or a divination spec dropping evocation and enchantment.

Diviner5/Incantatrix4/IOTSOV7/Incantatrix4. Gets spontaneous metamagic 1/day, 3 metamagic bonus feats, I think all of the Incantatrix metamagic enhancers (not the cost reducer), and full IOTSOV, i.e. double wards, 4/day, purple veil, etc.

I think you need a metamagic feat for incantatrix, so you need flaws, or to be human. Grey elf would look like this:

1: SF abj
3: Iron will
5: Extend spell
6: Skill foc
6: Metamagic (bonus)
9: GSF abjuration
9: Metamagic. (bonus)
12: Metamagic
15: Metamagic
18: Metamagic
19: Metamagic. (Bonus)

Bonus feats have to be metamagic, others don't, but it's good for them to be. 6 potential metamagic feats.

A good thing to try to get is a custom spellcraft increasing item, or at the very least some way to boost spellcraft. Otherwise, you can't metamagic using incantatrix class features.

Persistant Foresight, and Shapechange, are always fun. Arcane mastery is often a pretty good feat...

Chain, reach, smiting, quicken, twin, are all pretty nice metamagics.

EDIT: Drop illusion or necromancy. Illusion would mean no manipulation, but necromancy contains many good save or loses. And Enervation.

Its a tough choice, but I would go Conjuration. What spells you might lose from dropping that, you could pick up again via the shadow spells.

And the Master Specialist is a good prc. It is worth taking.

What are the details on being a generalist?

You simply don't specialize. You don't sacrifice any schools. You are a regular PHB wizard.

Oh, I get it now. So, which would be the wiser choice?

Ye gods, what did your poor DM ever do to deserve such punishment?

Yeaaaaah.... you just told him to drop the capability to cast TELEPORT. A key spell for the wizard. Teleport is a conjuration spell that can't be simulated by shadow spells.

Yeah, you're gonna want conjuration. I'd drop necro, but that's because I don't like undead. Illusion is good times, but a lot of its combat effects seem to be mind-affecting. As such, they tend to be less useful as your enemis get better-equipped (or become vermin, constructs, or undead.

[Edit]: You can still use Shadow Walk for teleportation, but that's risky. You'll also lose Gate, Plane Shift, Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, which are all useful.

Dropping Enchantment would be ok. There are a few good spells in there, but overall save and X can be found in plenty of other schools.

Yeah, so far my wiz is a trans specialist, who dropped ench and evoc. So, the verdict seems to be necromancy if I continue specializing.

Meh. Teleport has never been a big deal for me. That's why I could stand losing it. Of course it is a spell that is situational in terms of what type of game you play in. So yes, in that instance, conjuration is a good school to keep.

Incantatrix can be found in Player's Guide to Faerun
