View Full Version : Pathfinder I want to make a Monk/Barbarian Elf in Pathfinder.

I originally had the idea for Divinity: Original Sin, but monk sucks in that game... sounds familiar... but regardless!

Monk and Barbarian both have Unchained forms in Pathfinder. Great that fits the character concept. EDIT: Alignment restrictions are lifted.

Any tips or ideas for the build? We start at level 10. I'd prefer Unarmed damage if at all possible. Can alternate class features of the original class be applied to the unchained one? Just wondering. I don't have anything I am eyeing yet.

I especially need help with the magic items.

EDIT: Concept: Some guy from a tribal background who balances between chaotic fury and peaceful focus. Focused on unarmed strike and self-perfection. The theme kinda fit a Monk/Barb, so that's what I went with for the concept, but I can retheme anything, so I guess Brawler works fine if that's what's best.

Your biggest hurdle is going to be the alignment restrictions - one has to be lawful and the other cannot be. Urban Barbarian or VMC Barbarian can let you be lawful and still rage, but if neither of those appeal to you then you'll need another approach, possibly 3rd party.

heh...Yeah. I didn't make it obvious that alignment restrictions were lifted.

Ok, I see your edit now. Your next concerns are ki powers/qinggong powers. A lot of those are SLAs, which require concentration and thus normally can't be used while raging.

What is Monk adding to the Barbarian that you can't get some other way? (Say, Brawler, which would let you keep your armor and not make you MAD by needing Wis.)

Not the faintest clue. I take that as archetypes for previous incarnations of the class for the unchained ones?

Nope, brawler is a barbarian rage power that gives you Improved Unarmed Strike and two weapon fighting when making unarmed blows.

Is your concept just a Barbarian who punches things? Perhaps if you explained the concept a little more more help could be forthcoming

Nope, Brawler (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/hybrid-classes/brawler) is a base class. Hybrid of Fighter/Monk, found in Advanced Class Guide.

It will probably give you most of what you want from Monk levels, without the extra levels of suck.

Brawler will probably work. I added the basic goal of the character above in the OP.

Go with Brawler, lets you wear armor and dump wis, plus your will saves will be fine due to rage. Personally I would go with Brawler VMC Barbarian (Brawler gets more than enough bonus feats to offset the VMC expense), but you could go with regular multiclassing too.

If you don't use Unchained versions, a monk/barbarian has some serious grappling potential. The Raging Grappler and Animal Fury rage powers are insanely good. But you're probably better off as either a straight barbarian or mixing with Brawler over Monk, because armor spikes add sooooooooo much free damage.

There are also several archetypes that allow this multiclass; urban barbarian being the least sucky. But yes, I would recommend brawler with VMC barbarian, though an unchained monk with VMC barbarian might also work.

Nope, Bra (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/barbarian/rage-powers/paizo---rage-powers/brawler)wler (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/barbarian/rage-powers/paizo---rage-powers/brawler-greater) is a Barbarian rage power, and better if you want to focus more on the barbarian side of things while still punching.

Though if you want the 'inner focus' part, you'll still kinda need to be a Monk, what with still mind etc.

Paizo sucks at naming things, this fact is established. No need to be facetious.

I was referring to the base class in my recommendation.

Apologies, I was going for levity, not malice.
