OOC Thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?476521-D-amp-D-3-5-OOC-Expedition-to-Arx)

Ever since you were born, you have been living under the rule of the Empire. It controls the entire world. You, and everyone, have always thought that no lands were left to explore. However, this has recently changed.

A new island has been found, out in the middle of the ocean. In that island is a tunnel that leads to an underground cave system of unknown size. The Empire has ordered a group of soldiers and craftsmen to explore this system and plant a teleportation gate into the surface.. Leading that group is a small strike force. You. You have been recruited, be it willingly or not, to be the eyes, heart and mind of this expedition. At least, they gave you time to prepare.

You were taken by boat to the island. You barely had the time to take a good look at it, having had to unload several crates into the tunnel. You sat down inside with the soldiers and craftsmen. The tunnel is roughly cylindrical, about a hundred feet high, and sloping downwards. It is dark beyond a few hundred feet into the tunnel.

The guards that escorted the group to the island are outside the cave, chatting among themselves.

As you rest, you feel the ground start to shake. With a deafening roar, the entrance to the cave starts to crumble and, among screams and curses, you are quickly sealed away from the world. With the ground still shaking, somewhere around you, you hear metal strike stone, and a candle is lit, faintly illuminating your spinning surroundings. You lie on the ground and catch your breath. As the last echoes tumble around the caves, you hear soft hissing and snapping. In the shadows, deeper into the tunnel, you see dozens of glowing red eyes. The chattering intensifies. You feel your belt for your blade. What do you do?

You have a turn to choose your actions.

Bernard looks at the many red eyes starring back at the party through the dark. Giving a small uneasy sigh Bernard says to the rest of his companions, "I suppose I traded one fate for another when I took this job." He closes his eyes for a moment, takes a deep breath, and exclaims, "Let's get started."

Bernard takes a full-round action to become Psionically Focused.

Now that I'm Psionically Focused I'm able to gain to passive ability of my Freedom Mantle: While psionically focused, you gain a
+10-foot bonus to your speed. You can expend your focus
to add your manifester level to a roll made to resist being
grappled or to escape from a grapple.

S'rah is a attractive young woman, though her skin is unnaturally pale (dem negative fort saves). She doesn't look physically strong by any stretch of the imagination. Her eyes are an ice-blue color and she has dark black hair with a single ice-clue streak. She's wearing studded leather with long brown boots, a finely craft bow is usually strapped to her back and a sword is sheathed at her side.

S'rah Song gets up from the ground with a slight cough and nods approvingly to the man who lit the candle before giving a quick annoyed look at the commander.
"Let's get started."
Turning to Bernard she speaks quietly in contrast to his exclamation, though she gets her bow out as she does so.
"While they seem to have already noticed us, I think it's best if we stay as quiet as possible in the future. It's even possible these things might not be aggressive."

S'rah will draw her bow (Move) and just ready to fire at one of the red-eyed things if they approach to attack, taking -1 to her roll for +1 DMG.

Roondar picks himself up from the ground, brushing off his basic leather armor and untangling his cloak from around his belt. Adjusting to the sudden ncrease in light, he looks for some rubble nearby to get a height advantage, saring up the tunnel trying to focus and make out any more details apart from those piercing red eyes (or at least judge the distance). Once done, he drops to one knee and silently draws his bow and draws an arrow in readiness should this turn hostile.

Guess this would be a good time for a spot check?

Amalgam, a rather strange fellow covered in thick bandages and robes. Uniformed scaled wings from his back and a tail dragging behind him. It was impossible to say what sort of dragon breed he was, as he was all of them and none of them. He growled slightly, glancing back to the cave and then towards the eyes, speaking out to them in draconic. "Spical mojka, usv confn persvek martivir!"

And just to give his appearance and even more frightful look, provided there was room for things, he mutters a spell, his size doubling.

Deep within the darkness, the eyes start moving. From what you can see, they are over 100 feet away from you. Then, you hear Commander Yorgan Ferk take charge of the troops, shouting, "To arms!", while more people light torches.

The soldiers draw their shields and weapons.

"In formation! Archers, nock arrows!"

Around twenty soldiers crouch side-to-side, raising their tower shields and swords to form a veritable wall. Behind them, the lancers stick polearms through the gaps in the shields. To their sides, soldiers wielding two-handed swords and polearms flank them. Finally, behind them, a host of archers scramble around for their bows and arrows.

One more round.

Bernard is not quite six feet tall. He boasts a rather toned physique. His shoulders are broad and his legs are powerful. He has long dirty blonde hair wrapped up in a ponytail, a long face with wide defined cheekbones, and full rounded eyes the color of which being like an acorn. Bernard wears a chain shirt with a long blue shirt underneath, long black pants that tightly hug his legs with black boots to match. Bernard sports a dagger at his side tied off to a belt around his waist.

Bernard starts to back away towards the imperial guards but comments in passing to S'rah, "Generally, things lurking in the shadows and starring you down tend to be hostile. That could just be my experience. At any rate, we should form up. Or group up rather."

Bernard moves behind the stout dwarf and says, "Alright big guy, when they come at you I'll get behind them. Whatever they are..."

Standing at 3 feet tall Roondar is barely noticed in most situations but as a ranger this suits him just fine. Dressed in all black apart from a leather chest piece, with a black cloak covering his back pack, a long bow on his back and a short sword on his hip. Concealed at the back of is belt is a dagger that is rarely used in combat.

The hissing intensifies and, before anyone notices, a volley of javelins flies through the air, aimed at the mass of armored soldiers. Fortunately, the shield wall protects them; only a few scraping blows connect.

Then comes a war cry.

The mass of gleaming eyes barrels straight towards the lit torches and candles of the group. The commander cries out several orders at once.

Finally, the charging creatures come into view. The size of a Halfling, their facial features are distorted and scarred, and their skin has a distinct greenish tint; it is scaly, flaky, and pale beyond belief, so much that you can almost see, even in this dim lighting, the muscles shifting below the skin, and the veins in their arms below the skin. This must be what life in the underground does to a person.

Then, the groups clash. In a frenzy of screams, the underground creatures smash against the shield wall and impale themselves against the waiting spears and swords. The wall retreats a few steps, seeming to fall back against the blows, only to give place to the flanking warriors, that begin shredding them to pieces. A few scatter and head towards the adventurers.

Copernicus moves closer to center and casts Bless on everyone (50' radius!). +1 attack, +1 saves against fear.

Seeing the two sides clash, Copernicus realizes it would be best to help the many, rather than focus on the few. He moves just behind the shield wall and shouts, "Pelor will help us against the darkness!" and fills the group with a little extra vigor. Casts Bless on party.

Move to heal closest dying or wounded soldier, most likely.

S'rah's arrow misses its mark, ricocheting off a wall.

Targrym charges at his target, nearly cleaving in half, while Bernard skewers one through the chest. Both fall to the ground, quickly bleeding out. Amalgam's claw slashes through another, dropping it as well.

Raith, preferring to stay out of the fray, tries to keep a low profile.

The soldiers press on, apparently trapping the enemy. Still, a few soldiers succumb to the creatures' attacks.

Copernicus' prayer seems to inspire the soldiers, increasing their morale.

Finally, the creatures realize their tactical mistake, too late. However, another wave of them surge from the darkness, surprising the soldiers from the rear. Another volley of javelins fly, this time hitting more often.

A few of them split away from the main group, spotting the more powerful expeditioneers.

Two thick rock clubs swing at Targrym, both hitting him squarely across his torso, the breastplate doing little to shield him.

Two attacks target Bernard as well, but both miss, and the same happens with Amalgam.

S'rah only draws the attention of one beast, but its club misses altogether.

The commotion behind the lines attracts the healers' attention to the wounded. They move in to tend to fallen soldiers, and one of them heals Targrym as well.

Targrym takes 9 damage and is then healed for 7. Basically, he takes 2 damage :smalltongue:

S'rah strikes true once again, dropping another creature to the ground.

Meanwhile, Targrym misses wildly, but Bernard makes up for it by slipping his dagger between the opponent's ribs, dropping it.

Unleashing a flurry of blows, Amalgam drops his opponent and two nearby creatures, finally ending the separate skirmish.

A section of the main force, noticing some of their brothers dying, lets out a war cry and splits off, once again towards the adventurers.

Several swings ricochet off the armor suits or miss altogether, but Roondar and Raith are struck.

Raith manages to put down one of them.

The healer lays her hands upon Roondar, healing him back to shape.

You've fought 11 goblins so far. Keep up the good work!

Roondar puts an arrow through the creature's shoulder, while S'rah, aided by Copernicus, strikes true, dropping another.

Clearly beginning to tire, Targrym misses, but Bernard shoves his dagger into the beast.

Amalgam misses twice and hits once, throwing another of the goblinoids into the air.

Roondar is attacked, but the swing misses spectacularly.

Raith misses with both weapons.

Finally, the creatures from the dark begin to fall back under the relentless assault from your troops. They scatter and flee, most of them being cut down on their way out. A few remain, too stubborn and stupid to flee, and are quickly put down.

The fight is over. Your side suffered very few losses, but many are injured. An archer notices Roondar struggling, and quickly puts an end to it.

A1var3z, here's a few rule explanations: normally, firing a bow in melee range gives the enemy a free attack against you. To prevent this from happening, you could take a 5-foot step (a special action where you move 5 feet without provoking attacks because you moved out of melee range) to back out of melee range before fighting. However, if you take a 5-foot step, you cannot use a move action in the same turn, and vice-versa. It's not a problem in this case, since we're doing this a bit cinematically and it doesn't really affect anything, but just so you know! :smallwink:

Also... *ahem*... each of you gets... 271 XP!

Bernard look's downwards to the dark corridor from where the goblinoids came. Pointing into the darkness he says, "I suggest that we make camp somewhere down the line. Otherwise, we'll be amoung the corpses."

Bernard turns to the goblinoid and says, "This guy might still be useful. I'd rather not kill him, he's lost and that's good enough for me, but maybe we can communicate through mannerisms? Gleam some information?"

Searching the bodies, you find only their weapons and armors, mostly consisting of stone clubs, shield and crude leather and hide armor. Some of them carry food with a smell that makes you retch, a few peculiarly-shaped stones, and not much else. Nothing you'd consider even remotely valuable.

Upon further interrogation, the goblinoid, in a way reminiscent of old mannerisms of the surface, lifts a single finger, insulting you and your family at once. It is clear that he doesn't speak common, but he is an eloquent communicator.

It would be possible to track the many attackers back to their camp, but the hard stone floor would make the task less than trivial.

The recon group is the most stealthy, both me and Raith have +7 to Move Silently. The Snipers behind us should be able to keep track of where we are, but with an extra 50ft between us the enemy would need another +5 on Listen to hear/spot them compared to the Recon group. The small army following us would get at least a +10 Listen/Spot. Traveling would be a bit slow, since we don't want the goblin with the recon group. This means the recon group would frequently have to double back to double check directions.

Is that cool with everyone?

S'rah places manacles on the goblin prisoner as she speaks.
"Do you really need that many protecting you? I was thinking me, the two scouts, and... I'm sorry what's your name again? I am S'rah Song."

With the prisoner in tow, the small team moves down the large tunnel, torches in hand. After a few hundred feet, it widens gradually into a larger cavern. Slightly phosphorescent moss in the walls of the cavern give off a dim light, just enough for you to get a sense of the enormity of this underground complex.
The ceiling is now many hundreds of feet above you. Looking further into the heart of the cave, you understand that the ceiling eventually rises beyond the range of your eyesight. It is a truly massive cavern, that will certainly take you quite a while to explore. If you don't die first.

Getting to the mouth of the tunnel, S'rah is able to tell that the few, dim footprints turn to your left. One of the soldiers insists that an exposed flame will definitely give your presence away.

Give me a spot check.

Is there enough light from the moss for humans to walk without stubbing their toes etc.? How about people with low-light vision?

BTW, even without their tower shields (assuming that extra -10 armor check doesn't apply while the shields aren't in active use) the human soldiers have a base -6 move silently. With 15 of them you can assume at least one will roll 6 or less on 2d10 (95% chance). 100' behind you that's an effective move silently check in the range 6-10.
"Ha! This is like the old stories. All we need is a dragon sitting on a pile of gold now and we're in a ballad." Targrym swaggers into the cavern.

You travel further into the massive cave complex. Even with the torchlight, it is fairly hard to avoid tripping on the many, many obstacles littering the ground beneath your feet. More than once, you almost fell into a pit.

Despite this, S'rah is able to keep following the tracks.

You just barely spot a dot of light somewhere in the middle of the darkness ahead of you. You have no idea how far away it is, and it keeps escaping your eyes, but you'd say it's pretty far away, maybe a few thousand feet.

Oko and Qailee

Not wanting to lose the tracks, S'rah signals to one of the scouts to get as close to her as possible. One he or she does, S'rah gets close enough to whisper into his ear.

"There are moving lights ahead, at least one thousand feet away. Go inform the sniper and then the group further back. Make sure they're staying far back. We will continue moving forward in the meantime."

Once the first scout departs, S'rah tries to point out the moving lights to Raith and the other scout before continuing forward.
