It has been pointed out that:

Lirian's gate was protected by nature and destroyed by nature (fire)

Dorukan's gate was protected by magic and destroyed by magic (rune)

Soon's gate was protected by paladins and destroyed by a(n ex-)paladin (Miko)

We have Gerard's gate next up, and we'll have to see what happens there...

I think this is an excellent theory, and to me, it seems likely that the final gate is close enough to the Temple of Odin that this was why Durkon was sent away and also why, when he returns, he will bring great destruction with him - whether or not the Snarl is released when the gate explodes (and we know it will, don't we? )

What do we think about Durkon's return and its connection to the Big Plot?

Will Durkon destroy the final gate - even unwittingly? :smalleek:

There's an interesting thought.

Though if he were to destroy the final gate, that would not bode well for the world of the stick... unless the Snarl is going to prevail in the end, something would have to seal the rifts, since it seems certain that Girard's gate will be next, and the only reason for the gang to go to Kraagor's gate is if that got destroyed as well.

Was the fire reall nature? Seeing as it was probably created by :redcloak:

The only problem is that the next gate (Girrard's) is supposedly protected by illusions, so if your progression means anything, that gate has to be DESTROYED by an illusion. Illusions have difficulty destroying things, what with being illusory and all. Not saying Rich couldn't find a way, it just seems a little unlikely on the whole.

(I think it's also a stretch calling fire "nature"--yes, sometimes forest fires and the like start spontaneously, but it's not as natural as a tree or a vine).

An illusion could make someone do something which leads to the destruction of the gate (maybe by making it look like a huge, evil monster which is just begging to be attacked by a high level wizard).

By prophecy Durkon only goes home posthumously.

OK, as a common reoccuring theme, the final gate/battle will occur in the Snowy Region, aka Kraagor's Gate.

Think about it, all the end or near-end battles happen in the snowy region. (Golden Sun, some Final Fantasys, Dragon Warrior)

Actually, he "finally" goes home posthumously. As in, for the last time. Nothing is keeping him from going home before he dies.
