:smallmad:Nightmare
5th level Illusion
Casting Time – 10 minutes
Range – Varies
Components – V, S
Duration – Instant

You send a hideous and unsettling phantasmal vision to a specific creature on the same plane as you that you name or otherwise specifically designate. The creature must make a Wisdom saving throw, which is modified by how well you know the creature, what physical connection you have to it and the distance between it and you.

Knowledge and Save Modifier

Secondhand = +4
Firsthand = +2
Familiar = 0

Connection and Save Modifier

Likeness or picture = -1
Possession or garment = -2
Body part, lock of hair, bit of nail or the like = -3

Range and Save Modifier

Beyond 400 miles of target= +8
400-200 miles = +4
199-100 miles = +2
99-50 miles= 0
Within 50 miles = -1
Line of Sight = - 2

On a failed Wisdom save, the creature is prevented from attaining restful sleep for 24 hours and takes 2d10 points of psychic damage. The nightmare leaves the subject with one level of fatigue and unable to regain arcane spells for the next 24 hours. If the creature succeeds on its saving throw, it is not affected, and you cannot use the spell against it for 24 hours.

If the recipient is awake when the spell begins, you can choose to cease casting, or enter a trance until the recipient goes to sleep, whereupon you become alert again and complete the casting. If you are disturbed during the trance, you must make a concentration check or the spell fails.

Creatures that trance or do not sleep are immune to this spell.

This is a conversion to 5e of the 3.5 spell Nightmare. Just need help on two things - The range of the spell, and the modifiers to the wisdom saving throw. It would be much appreciated if anyone could help me with these two aspects of the spell.

Just some ideas, would the degree of connection also help extend the range? If you have for example hair and a name, you should be able to hit them from farther away and with a higher DC then if you just have a name, or do not know much about this individual, and need them in Line of Sight.

Thanks Mith, added distance to the modifiers, hope they are okay. The modifiers were based on the ones for the Scrying spell, but changed them as the Nightmare is (IMO) more powerful and can disable a caster and leave them with one level of fatigue.

Woooow I JUST LOVE THIS. Almost perfect spell. Maybe not making it too hard to succeed so you can use this too often to just kill a target. Maybe immune for the spell 24 hours on a succes BUT make the effects worse for the target (so a stronger effect)

Edit: wait, secondhand gives +5 (I assume on the save) BUT same plane +10. So if on the same plane the target can save easier OR if you know the target well

Edit: what spell lists ?
