View Full Version : Optimization Possible? (DMG, PHB, and MM only)

I got a custom magic greataxe with the following statistics:
Whenever you kill someone with it it traps their soul and gives you a bonus of +1 to attack rolls (only stack up to your character level)
After 24 hours a soul has to make a DC 10+Level+Cha Mod save to escape. If they make it, they go to an appropriate plane and things go on as normal, otherwise they are trapped for another 24 hours. If they roll a nat. 1 on the check to escape, their soul is destroyed.
NOTE: Playing a derro with LA: 0 at ECL 3.

What is your question?

Optimizing this weapon seems pretty straight forward.
1) Increase level and cha(double check if your DM meant your level/cha, their level/cha, or the default of the weapon's level/cha). If it refers to your level then just forget about cha. Most DCs that scale with your level are 10+1/2HD+ability modifier. So 10+HD-ability penalty will quickly exceed the normal DC.

2) Slaughter your level's worth of low level victims. (At first it might sound like optimizing your victims ability to not roll a 1 would help, but the only core way is the Luck Domain which is not a net benefit)

OldTrees pretty much has it. Keep a ready supply of slaves on hand and slaughter as many as you need to keep yourself topped off, then Power Attack fully all day with no effective attack penalty.

Presuming cats count, and presuming this 3rd level level character has Cha of 10
He only loses 3*(1+11)/20=1.8 cat souls per 24 hours. So killing 2 cats per day is more than sufficient.
Nth level: N*(1+14-N)/20 = N(15-N)/20 = (15N-N2)/20 (for 0<N<14)
4th level: 4*(1+10)/20 = 2.2
5th level: 5*(1+9)/20 = 2.5
6th level: 6*(1+8)/20 = 2.7
7th level: 7*(1+7)/20 = 2.8
8th level: 8*(1+6)/20 = 2.1
9th level: 9*(1+5)/20 = 1.5
...
Nth level: N*(1+1)/20 = N/10 (for 13<N)
14th level: 14*(1+1)/20 = 1.4
20th level: 20*(1+1)/20 = 2.0
So 2-3 cats per day on average will suffice for all non epic levels.

How are you an ECL 3 Derro with 0 LA? Did your DM decide the +2 LA sane Derro have is too high and thus adjust it down? Or did your DM mistake LA - of the insane Derro for LA +0?

I am playing a group of villains for the DM and thusly am based off of CR. The Derro has 3 CR so it has an effective LA of 0 for my purposes.
