here is the wording for painful stare:

Painful Stare (Su): When an attack that deals damage hits the target of a mesmerist’s hypnotic stare, the mesmerist can cause the target to take an amount of additional damage......

i can read this 2 different ways....
1> when an attack that deals damage - meaning an attack that would normally do hit point damage, as opposed to an attack that does not do damage like a combat maneuvre.

2>when an attack that deals damage hits - meaning that the attack has to actually do damage. So if your damage is negated by DR for instance you dont do damage and thus wont trigger painful stare damage..

Which do you think is accurate? would this work with something that does ability damage like a poison? . and what if damage is negated by an enemies DR -would i still get the bonus damage bc the attack is a damage dealing attack and it hit?

It works similar to Sneak Attack.
- You need to do hit point damage.
- It is factored into total damage before reductions happen.
