Mordheim (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27Ua2pP31yE)

Mordheim, City of the Damned. You all find yourselves just at the outskirts of this once-great city. A sickly gloom of both physical fog-like mist hangs over the whole place, giving you all the churning feeling in your stomachs that this is a place best left undisturbed.

However, you've all been hired by Lord Roland to enter this acursed place to bring some of that rumored 'Wyrdstone' back out to your Trader-contact in order to be paid and possibly invest of some that money in gear, food, etc.

You haven't met or seen any other merc-groups as of yet, but you all have that sense of dread running down your spine.... as if you're being watched ALL the time.
-----------

You've been briefed, you're all ready to enter through the southern gate.
Damned or not, It is time to enter the city of the Damned....
(this is your chance to introduce yourselves and establish some banter and what-not. you all already know eachother at least a little bit, since you've been travelling to Mordheim together.)

Hanna hums as she looks at the gate, twirling her axe one-handed almost unconsciously as she says to her companions, "City of the Damned, huh? Kinda unimpressive. I mean...The people who lived here when the meteor hit...I hope they find their ways in the afterlife. But right now? Just kinda looks like some ruined town."

Gustav had been uncharacteristically quiet as they approached the city. It had been luck, or perhaps fate, that he had left town on his fool's errand. The lively city he had left behind was now a graveyard. "You're a priest, right? You wanna say something for them? Couldn't hurt, and might be the only thing they get." Gustav looked around. They seemed alone in a sea of mist. "Might want to ask about a blessing for us, too. Bound be all sorts of scavengers lurking around. The wealth of the city lies unclaimed."

Youngest child of an elven warband captain, Burdlir Goldenhair, determined to prove his worth to himself and the world despite a disapproving father and two shinning examples of elven perfection as older siblings.
At 5'-10" and a 105 pounds Hathlir is short and slender for an elf. His head is topped with long white hair usually bound into a tail that stops between his shoulder blades. He is very well armed carrying a rough looking green hilted sword and dagger, and dangerous brown with green hand wrappings elfbow. He wears a tattered green cloak over brown leather armor and cap. On his back is a brown backpack.
New to the realms of men Hathlir tends to come off as haughty. This is more due to racial profiling than any sense of pride in Hathlir. Hathlir is actually racked with self-doubt which leads him to be social awkward. He doubts his own capabilities as he constantly compares himself to his older siblings and father. According to his father he always falls short of the standard. It was after one such deriding conversation that Hathlir decided to leave the woods and prove his worth to himself and return one day powerful enough to deserve his family legacy of Kithband Captains.
It was only a few months out of the woods before Hathlir discovered the harsh reality of greater world. Elves were not usually welcome in the smaller towns and were looked down on in several of the bigger cities. It became difficult to find his meals let alone a means of employment. So when he heard a rumor in a Reikland tavern that local noble known as Roland was contracting adventurers he knew he found a chance at least a steady supply of meals and possibly much much more. At first Roland was not thrilled to hire an elf but Hathlir put on an archery display that amazed the noble and he hired the elf immediately. Hathlir dreams of becoming a renowned warrior known throughout the Empire. These are young elvish fantasies and he is at least somewhat self-aware of the fact.

Hathlir took a deep breath as he stood before the gates of Mordheim. This is what the machinations of man will eventually lead to everywhere. The largest cities of man will ultimately follow this city's example and become a deserted place of death and decay. After a few century however that decay will lead to new life as the grass and finally the trees reclaim the land from the fleeting futile grasps of man. All these thoughts flirt quickly through Hathlir's mind as he stares into the expanse of the City of the Damned. After hearing a few of his fellow travelers speak he replies quietly consciously putting a sense of awe into his voice. It is so immense and yet still. This is very unnatural. Yes priest do say a prayer for us all. Hathlir has little use for the inventions of man's Deities but out of respect for his companions he keeps up a pretense of faith. Hathlir unlike some elven scholars did not believe the human gods were just different names for the same entities the elves worshiped. However he knew that Isha and Kurnous were watching impassively from afar and he had hopes that his actions in the days ahead would please them. Any ideas on where to begin our search?

A slow, creeping mist still holding the coldness of winter, began to roll in over the silent, haunting city in front of you all, a sort of muffled silence spread out everywhere, with every minute the misty fog began to almost congeal and condense, lowering visibility continually. For now, it's just a light mist.... for now.

The Guy that have lead you all here, your contact and Wyrdstone transportation-master for the Noble you all got hired by, turned to you all, uttering in a rather gruff voice. "Well, off you go then. Please, try to return with at least a tiny bit of that Wyrdstone, alright? The last group di-.... Never mind. Just go on and keep sight on what route you take so you can return. Should i hear no word from any of you for more than 3 days, then I'll leave and assume you all dead, as you all agreed to.... and signed acceptance of on the contract." He had said with a slightly scary smile, showing a lack of a full set of teeth in his mouth.
----------------------------------

It is time to head on in, pick a direction, For now: there's the Southern Gate House, above it is Rupert von Endon's Amphitheater, to the Right you'll find the poor quarters, and to the left is The Rock, and even from this distance 'The Rock' looks surprisingly intact and 'pure', compared to all other buildings within the city.

But, for now, you can all begin with the Southern Gatehouse area, investigate whatever you wish there, and then head some other way that you'd wish.
Everything is almost a total silence, even speech feels dull and lacking in tone, the misty fog continually congealing and condensing with every moment ticking by.

Hanna nods to the man and says, "Mmhm. I'm sure the previous group is enjoying a life of relaxation and comfort in Altdorf." She shrugs and walks towards the city.

Once inside, she looks around and says, "Hrm. You know, I was expecting to be jumped by some hideous mutant as soon as I set foot in this place." She gestures ahead to the Southern Gatehouse and says, "This seems as good a place to start as any. Anyone disagree? And have a better idea?"

Hathlir listens quietly to the man noting that they would need to get word back here within 3 days. That doesn't leave a lot of time of dallying about.
Hanna I believe that to be a most excellent choice. I will follow your lead. Know that my eyes are watching over you from the shadows.
With that Hathlir moved into the mist towards a building using the shadows to mask his movement.

Bound to be some useful information there, and if it is safe enough we could set up a base there. Not sure I want to be sleeping out in the mist when it comes time for that." The Foggy Mist clings ever closer up around you all, causing silluettes to appear everywhere, with the haunted husks of the buildings eerily staring out at you all.
The path towards the guardhouse went without much of an event, besides of the disturbing pulsing growths clinging to the buildings, slowly getting worse and worse the deeper you go. Going from light lumps here and there, to bigger collections of it growing up the sides of the empty buildings.

You have the guardhouse in sight now, it being less than 50 meters forward.
This building is a fairly intact one, although it looks just as abandoned as every other building around you all.

I would like to see a +10 Perception Skill Test for you all.
If you succeed with 2 or more Degrees (aka. rolls 62 and got a TN of 42) Then roll a +0 Willpower Test. I'll explain why if any of you need to do the roll :3

The walk up to the Gatehouse takes only a couple of more minutes in the careful tempo you're all taking.... however, the walk there isn't all that uneventful.
You all see what at first looks like a regular Guard standing watch outside the door into the gatehouse... but on closer inspection you all realize that he is VERY much dead, to the point of maggots writhing in the eyesockets and the smell of him making you all reach a near-gag level of disgust.

If that scary corpse wasn't enough, the mist around you seem to congeal into leering faces, ghostly hands reaching out as if trying to strangle you all. The surreality of it is so intense that it's literally damaging to you all.

you all gain an Insanity point from the combined event of maggot-eyes and ghostly specters.
Hathlir does not, cuz he only saw the dead Guard and his nasty eyesockets.

Reaching the Door to the gatehouse, and the actual full entrance through the missing portcullis to reach further inside into Mordheim itself, you see that the door inside the gatehouse appears to be severely damaged and not even locked, barely managing to stay closed as is.
The rest of Mordheim stretches out in foggy dimness beyond the wide access hole that once had hold that portcullis.

None of you hear anything to suggest someone else being nearby, at least not out outside.

LarsWester
2016-02-18, 10:21 AM
That was startling back there. Was that a ghost? I've never seen one before.
A quick shiver passes over Hathlir before he continues.
Let's see if we can gain entrance to the guardhouse and get to a higher point of observation. Maybe from the top we could see something besides this damned fog.

Even inside the gatehouse, the fog clings just as closely as it does outside. All over the place inside, the half-rotted, half-gnawed, half-boney corpses of months-old armoured Humanoids can be seen threwn over both floor, tables and stairs. Not a single body remained relatively intact or even close to 'fresh'.
She stench inside the guardhouse was HORRID. Like Rancid goatmilk, old cinnamon and mold-covered chops of meat. But it all had a sort of 'washed-out' oldness to it. like it's a smell that's been hanging around for years, not mere months.

Many a chair is tipped over and heavily damaged and the dust rests heavily everywhere one can see.
There's a few intact-looking dress-closets, cupboards and possible rest-places up the stairs. If there's anything valuable or even useful, this is a good a place as any to start out.

If any of you wish to search the place for usable/valuable/curious Items, then I'll first need a +20 Willpower Test in order for your character to not begin dry-heaving and needing to leave the gatehouse and loose their lunch due to both the sight of all that death, rot and the horrid smell. And you're unable to force yourself back inside at the mere thought of the smell making you all queasy and sick.
Should you succeed, then you can do a +0 Search action. Anyone who wants can Aid whomever that got the highest Search TN Value (and is still remaining inside after the WP test).

Only one test is allow safely, but more can be attempted should the first one fail... however it might not be healthy to stay in there for too long *wink*
So whomever have the highest base Search stat rolls the dice, getting +10 to the TN for each character that helps/aids him/her with the task.

Hathlir recoils at the horrendous sight before him. Even in his days with the warband he had never seen anything this gruesome. But he decided to press on to see if there were any useful clues or items to help him. He was in a guardhouse surely there were weapons or armor he could make use of as they ventured further into the city. Holding his breath Hathlir began to sift through the carnage for anything of note.

Gustav barely held his lunch in as he looked around. Gods, what an awful sight. He'd known that the city would be dead, but he'd never imagined this... Still, if the dwarf could stomach it, so could he. Perhaps he could find something useful for his investigation. Records of the final day, reports issued to the guards, that sort of thing. As well as any more useful weapons. But that thought only lasted a moment, as did his moment of calm. He burst out of the guardhouse and proceeded to retch out on the damp street, until he was spent.

Semi-detailed Map of Mordheim (pre-mushroomcloud, of course :p It's the map found in the OOC)

A Bunch of rotting food in the Larder.
Small purse with 4 sp in it.
A very ragged, but intact, piece of parchment with the name 'The Rock' on it, as well as the words 'repent'. rest is unreadable.
An Intact Waterskin (with stale, nasty water inside it)
4 Intact Backpacks, all empty.
2 dusty and unused Torches with a box of matches near them (holding about a dozen matches within it)
A slightly rusty set of manacles
1 Rusty Breastplate. It looks very unhealthy to wear.
1 Unworn Full set of Studded Leather Armour.

1 odd vial with a murky-blue liquid inside it.
3 odd-looking charms made out of wood and corded so they can be worn around the neck.

Through great effort of will Hathlir was able to make a thorough search of the guardhouse. The horrendous smell permeated the entire building. It seemed to cling to the elf churning his stomach whenever he disturbed any item. He almost lost his control when opening the larder revealed a large amount of spoiled food. His search turned up several items some usable some he left as he deemed worthless in their current state. After completing his search of the guard house he emerged to find Gustav and Hanna still retching outside.

Semi-detailed Map of Mordheim (pre-mushroomcloud, of course :p It's the map found in the OOC)
Small purse with 4 sp in it.
An Intact Waterskin (with stale, nasty water inside it)
4 Intact Backpacks, all empty. (Hathlir will grab as many backpacks as Party members I don't believe Bubba is with us anymore but just in case)

1 Unworn Full set of Studded Leather Armour. (What are the stats on this in AP is better than Leather 1 AP)
1 odd vial with a murky-blue liquid inside it. (Any check required to identify the liquid? Heal or Evaluate?)
3 odd-looking charms made out of wood and corded so they can be worn around the neck.

Once he rejoined the two humans in the fresh air Hathlir felt he could breathe normally again.
Hanna I see you are not wearing armor. I found this set of leather armor inside the guardhouse would you like to wear it. It seems prudent to have some means of armor in this damned city. I also found these backpacks and wooden charms.
Hathlir held out a wooden charm and backpack in each hand for Gustav and Hanna to take if they so chose.
I also recovered this map. I think we should move on from this place it has a foul smell. Hathlir said looking down at the pools of vomit near the two humans.

Hanna nods and says, "Unworn? Thank you. I...Urgh..." She wipes the last bit of vomit away from her mouth before continuing, "I wouldn't want to desecrate the dead, but if you found it in a closet somewhere, I'll take it." She swallows, and looks at the way forwards, saying, "Onwards, then?"

Hathlir looks at Hanna quizzically before responding The armor was not in use when I found it. I could not possible comment about it ever being used. It likely belonged to someone who is dead now. I know not why that should matter. You may take my armor if you prefer the armor of someone living and I can will wear the armor of the deceased.
The elf pauses and looks around a bit before continuing.
Yes onwards but towards where? Gustav you have been here before. Any suggestions? the tone with which Hathlir said before implied prior to the city's destruction not simply a previous visit.

No point in going to the tenement, I'm sure the landlord threw all my stuff on the street the day I left town. We should head to City Hall. The road you all took was a winding, narrow street passage leading between houses, past mind-itching growths of..... who knows? it was horrible to watch and none of you wanted to go anywhere near any of it.

On the way through the Poor Quarters, while walking down through an alley way, something suddenly flops down from ontop of a roof above you all, falling all the way down and slamming into the ricketed brickway. The body of the fallen thing hits the bricks with a nasty crunch and the snapping of wood, arrowshafts sticking out from it. From just one glance, it was clear this this... thing was not a human.. or elf, dwarf or halfling for that matter. it was all fuzzy with matted fur and rodent-like appearance.

Those of you that have heard of the stories and myths, this very much looks like a SKAVEN... those Ratpeople that mothers tell their kids about in order to keep them in line... But this was one of those things... a REAL one.

From the not-so-distant houseroofs further out, you can all hear the woops and cries of jubilation, the blasts of some sort of flintlock weaponry. Whatever the hell was going on, it seemed someone else... or someTHING else was fighting more of these rat-things... and they were all getting closer to the lot of you's position in that alley way.

THe noise it coming from the 'far' left, on the other side of a wall of houses that causes the alley way you're all in.
There's a few doors, some creaking and open, others still attached and possibly locked... a few was totally missing from their doorframe.

So it's all up to you all what you wanna do: keep going and hope you don't get spotted. take cover in one or more of the buildings, go back and find another way. head onwards towards the sound of fighiting... or something totally different. it's all up to you lot.
As of yet, no actual rolls will be needed (unless you try to do something with a chance of failure, such as knowledge tests, perception tests, etc.)

Skaven. My father told me of fights with them. Hathlir pauses. But if there are Skaven and they are fighting someone else it is possible that there are survivors here in the city. I believe we should try to see what the source of the sound is and aid if there are indeed survivors. Saying so Hathlir ducked through the doorway into the tallest house between the noise and the party.

Hathlir will attempt to get as high as possible to get a view on the source of the noise. Not sure if any checks required for this.

Hanna pulls back her lips into an almost canine snarl as she sees the Ratman and says, "Damnable monster." She frowns as she hears the blasts of gunpowder, and says, "And it sounds like something is fighting it, too." She calls up to Hathlir as she ducks into the closest door she can to the Skaven's path, "What's fighting it?"

A peek over the top of the houses shows that..... a freaking HORDE of skaven fighitng eachother, as if two big warbands had suddenly clashed and was busy killing each other. It would indeed be VERY wise to not get spotted and give the mutant-freaks a good reason to stop slaughtering each other, and instead band together to kill a couple of Human-things, Dwarf-things and Elf-Things.

Hathlir can't believe his eyes. The sheer number of Skaven is overwhelming as is the violence of the two parties clashing with one another. He quickly backs away from the edge of the buildings with a sinking feeling in his stomach. He hears Hanna call up to him and he looks down at her placing a finger over his lips before descending to meet with the other two.
There are so many of those things. I can't believe it. They are fighting each other. It's horrible. We need to stay out of sight. A warband of that size would easily destroy the three of us.

The pathway back from where you all came from would bring you all much closer to the fighting mob of Skaven. So if you'd all want to go back and find another way that would lead away from the skavens, it would be fairly dangerous. the Alley Way you're already in, leads one way forward that takes you parallel with the big infighting.... or you could all just try and path through the buildings to your right and try to navigate through them. It's not a surefire way that there'll be a way through them, but it would be a relatively safer place to go.

However, whatever path you choose is up to the lot of you.

Hathlir laughs quietly when Gustav suggests that there can't be too many of the Skaven. Gustav I didn't get an accurate count but believe me there ARE precisely TOO MANY of those beasts. I think we could be safe in the alleyway but I still prefer to get distance away from that many foes. I say we start moving down the alley and if we see a door on the opposite side that is open we move through that building. But I think it best to be moving at any rate.
After finishing speaking Hathlir begins to continue down the alleyway keeping an eye out for open doors on the one side and stray skaven on the other side of the alley.

The path through the houses is not a very relaxing one, with the thought of a sudden group of Skaven, or some other horror suddenly spotting you keeps gnawing at everyone's mind. Everywhere there's husks of the dead, the smell of decay and rot, as well as what appears to be looted remains of jewelry boxes, closets of Transport-Chests.
One could of course search it all more closely over.... but with the way it all looks so ransacked already, this would most likely just end up with it being a big waste of time and quite likely just invite trouble.

After some 10 minutes or so of painstakingly slow and methodical travel through the abandoned houses here in the Poor district ends up leading you all out towards the main road and a more open space of view.

---------------

you're all inside a house that looks like it used to be a gambling den or something alike it. The outside on the main road appears the be completely silent and even the sound of the Skaven Infighting behind you have gotten totally silent as well. As if the Smoke, Mist and general creepy-feeling of the whole city have smothered the very sounds all around you all.
If you follow to main road onwards, you'll reach the area with the Clocktower with further following of the road would lead you up towards the City Hall District when you've passed through the 'Wizard's Mansion' as your map tells you. The histories of that place though is seeped with romours of strange lights, with even the theories running that Warlocks lived there prior to the Destruction of the City, practicing their foreboding arts. But all that is truely and fully known about the place is that it's a rather big mansion that's been visited more than a few times by Witch Hunters and the like, but no solid or 'Witch Hunter Acceptable' Evidence was ever found there, so the building and it's occupants was left alone and not-dead.
Whatever exists there now is not known, but by the signs of the rest of the city, it might just be a big ruin. a Dead and soulless rubble-filled place. Or it might still stand, who knows?

Not to be left behind in this city of mist with packs of Skaven all around Hathlir runs after the two humans. He has his bow in one hand as he catches up to the slower folk. Once he reaches them he slows his pace to match their own.

The rustle on along towards the Clocktower goes quite uneventful. However, as you reach the tower itself you can all hear the scrabbling noises from within, like as if someone was searching around, or just scuffling through everything inside.
Someone is inside and it's not sounding like they care much about attracting attention.

If anyone wishes to do so, they can make a stealthy-sneak test at a basic +0 difficulty. It's quite dim in there and will require a Perception Test as well to spot whatever is inside.

With the elf being all sneaky and unheard or unseen, he manages to get right up to a nearby glassless window and peered in.
The Agitator of the group was NOT all that stealthy, but since the scrabbling and scrounching from inside doesn't halt, it would appear that the light stumble over some rubble hadn't caught anyone else's attention, with the exception of the Elf who could clearly hear the rather clumsy Agitator.

The insides of the clocktower is a relative clean mess, compared to the rest of the city's state, but much of it's innards was still dusty, broken and scattered. just a bit less so than everywhere else.
In the middle of a mess of cloth, patchy fur and grubby hands, was the human-looking corpse of what looks like someone whom might have been part of an earlier expedition-team, since his body was only partially in the decomposed state.
The 'mess of cloth, patchy fur and grubby hands' was none other than 3 wayward skaven, rummaging through the dead human's pockets, clothes, etc. a few gnaws and bites also happened and a bit less Prior-Human-Adventurer was left each time it happened.

The 3 Skavens looks relatively unarmed and unarmoured, wearing only loose bundles of cloth, hoods and messily-done footwrappings. each seemed to carry what looked like a nasty-looking club of some kind, a metal band wrapped around the thicker parts of the 'head' of those clubs. Besides that you manage to spot what looks like some sort of crudely-made (and rather unhygienic) throwing stars.

The rest of the bottom parts of this clock tower remains relatively scarce in other items of interest, with only a few skeletons here and there catching your eye, as well as what appears to be a winding staircase that would most likely lead upwards to another floor and from there, hopefully more intact stairs that would lead up to the top of the clocktower itself.

He then lithely sneaked back from the window to rejoin the others and shared what he found in a soft whisper.

Skaven. 3 of them and the corpse of someone they found. Maybe we could surprise them but from everything i read the Skaven are fierce warriors and could very easily tear us apart like the corpse inside. What do you want to do dispatch these three? My knowledge of beastmen come from tavern tales and the like I wouldn't really trust the information too much. Just as you're all about done planning how to deal with the 3 Skaven inside, you all suddenly hear a massive level of scrabbling and yelping from inside the Clocktower, as well as a few deathscreams (3 to be exact). So right now, there's no longer 3 skaven inside the clocktower, at least not from how the sounds inside made it sound like.
But none of you had seen or heard anyone else approach the tower, so either there must have been 1 or 2 more skaven above, or someone (or something) had managed to sneak inside without anyone else's notice.

Returning up to the Clocktower and peering back inside, the sneaky Elf manages to just make out the shape of 3 dead skaven and a new, 4th one standing over the dead ratmen-corpses, holding a tiny sliver of some sort of glowing green crystal-like substance (about the size of a small chip of wood). According to descriptions given before entering Mordheim, that would seem to be a tiny piece of Wyrdstone.
As to what had happened, it was clear that one of the Skaven must have found it and infighting insued, with the 4th skaven either being an outsider have have had come down from above, higer up in the clocktower to take it's chance to off the others and claim the prize for itself.

The arrow goes flying and bores right through the Skaven's left leg, it's scream echoes around the clocktower as it attempts without success to pull it free. Then came the charge from the Ulric-worshipper and the blow from her send the skaven stumbling right into the final blow to the head from Gustav made that Rat-skull explode in fragments, most of it's brains was sent flying out the other side, splattering the wall right near the window opening that Hathlir was aiming through, luckily avoiding any spare splattering of brains upon himself.

All in all, that was a really effective killing and the scream of the dying Skaven had been dulled enough by merely it being a bit clocktower in and of itself.

The tiny fragment of wyrdstone was laying there nearby the dead Skaven, glmmering creepily, as if it was liquid, gaseous and solid at the very same time.
