View Full Version : DM Help Brainstorming Weretiger Encounters

GUARDIANS CAMPAIGN PLAYERS: STAY OUT!

Hiya, Playground. I have occasion to build 3-5 weretiger encounters, so I'm looking for cool ideas. The weretigers are warlords for an army of chiteras (see below), and by plot-tastic contrivance, the PCs (also detailed below) will have occasion to fight each of them in D&D-friendly combats. The PCs are level 6 and will probably make it up to level 7 while while these weretigers are enemies. I'm trying to create a bunch of cool encounters with these weretigers, so feel free to work in stuff like barricades, weird companion monsters, or anything that shakes up the encounter from just running into the weretiger in an alley. What can we come up with?


Warforged crusader/warblade. Lawful Good, believes he was created to fight evil. Uses reach and/or Thicket of Blades.
Human sorcerer/wild mage. Frequent user of Sculpt Spell, grease, some nauseating cloud spell, and good old blasting. Pragmatic.
Aasimar warlock/spirit shaman/eldritch disciple. Brings in nature-based battlefield control and some reliable damage. Young girl, just becoming sure of herself.


This creature looks like a cross between a spider and a beetle. It has a hard exoskeleton and six pointed legs protruding from a mottled green abdomen. Two massive, bony-looking mandibles curve outward like arms from the head, which is dotted with several round, black eyes.

Special Abilities
Tremorsense (Ex): A chitera can detect and pinpoint anything in contact with its web, regardless of distance.
Web (Ex): Chiteras can produce thick, green strands of webbing from special dispensers on their abdomens, which can be spun into sheets from 5 to 60 feet square. Creatures that make full contact with the webbing are entangled. Sheets of web have 6 hit points per 5ft. square and hardness 5. Fire burns instantly through chitera web.
Entangled victims may escape with a successful DC 13 Escape Artist check, or DC 17 Strength check. Effective against creatures of up to Large size. The DC is Constitution-based.
Cocoon (Ex): To use this ability, a chitera must succeed on a touch attack with its bite against a foe entangled in its web. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Reflex save or be completely wrapped in a cocoon of web. The victim is treated as if pinned by an opponent (the web) with a grapple check of 20. Breaking free of first the "pin" and then the "grapple" allows the victim to act freely the next round. (Most likely this means standing up from prone, but creatures that have been cocooned for some time may find themselves suspended high in the air.)
Each round that the victim struggles in the cocoon, they are pricked by the tiny, venemous barbs that protrude from the strands of web, and must succeed on a DC 12 Fortitude save or take 1d4 points of Strength damage. This damage can be avoided by staying completely still in the cocoon, effectively rendering the victim helpless.

Chitera web-spinners (another breed of the same creature) are statistically identical to hunters, but with the following changes:

Land and climb speeds are 10 ft. slower
Can make a ranged touch attack to entangle creatures with their webs (similar to monstrous spiders)
Feats are instead: Improved Initiative, Weapon Focus (ranged touch)
